Partial pyloric obstruction causing gastric retention is described in 2 young female horses. Gastric retention was confirmed by contrast radiography of the upper gastrointestinal tract. In both horses a large mass was palpated in the wall of the pyloric antrum at exploratory laparotomy. Post-mortem examination of the first case confirmed that this mass was associated with chronic gastric ulceration. Gastric ulceration was not confirmed in the second case but this horse recovered after the pylorus and duodenum were bypassed by gastro-jejunostomy.

Two male Angora goats presented with ataxia and weakness of the hind limbs. Both tired easily when exercised and often stumbled and fell. In both cases, post-mortem examination revealed focal areas of gliosis and diffuse Wallerian degeneration in the spinal cord at the level of the atlanto-axial joint. There were also two areas of myelomalacia in one of the goats. In the other, the caudal articular surfaces of the atlas were unusually convex and the odontoid process of the axis was laterally compressed. It is suggested that these vertebral anomalies resulted in excessive mobility of the joint leading to the development of a compressive myelopathy.

Electroacupuncture was used as the sole analgesic for standing laparotomies on 2 Friesian cows. Needles placed in the lumbosacral space, and second lumbar interspinous space and high in the lumbar fossa were stimulated with an AC current at 15 to 28 Hz. The analgesia produced was similar to that of a paralumbar nerve block.

Left displacement of the abomasum was diagnosed radiographically in an 8-week-old female Friesian calf. At surgery, a 4 cm ulcer was repaired and an abomasopexy performed during closure of the abdomen. Recovery from surgery was slow, and regurgitation of rumen contents occurred. Despite medical treatment, the calf died 4 days later. Left abomasal displacement is a well documented disease of dairy cattle (Robertson 1968; Coppock 1974; Martin et al 1978a; Poulsen 1976), but in young calves the condition is rare (Dirksen 1981). This report describes a case of left abomasal displacement with ulceration in an 8-week-old female Friesian calf.

A survey of the concentrations of cortisol in blood and urine samples taken from thoroughbred and standardbred horses after racing is presented. Statistical analysis showed the only significant difference between thoroughbred and standardbred horses was a higher cortisol concentration in thoroughbred urine. Urine volume and pH had no significant influence on the urinary cortisol concentration, however 9.5% of the urinary cortisol variation could be explained due to the influence of plasma cortisol concentration. The results of cortisol and ACTH administrations are also shown and compared with the survey results.
