Introduction: Culturally safe and meaningful cognitive assessment methods for use with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are scarce. Concerns are raised regarding the efficacy of existing methods in cross‐cultural contexts. The Perceive, Recall, Plan and Perform (PRPP) Assessment offers a person‐centred alternative whereby cognitive strategy application is examined during performance of culturally relevant everyday tasks. This paper explores its use with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Methods: A critical case study design was applied to examine the effectiveness and relevance of the PRPP Assessment with two Aboriginal Australian people in the Northern Territory of Australia. 'Ivan' and 'Jean' were each receiving occupational therapy through a rehabilitation service over a 6‐month period following acquired brain injuries. Ivan and Jean were assessed performing everyday tasks of interest and importance to them as part of routine care. A partnership approach was adopted throughout the process, and both consented to their stories being told. Results: The PRPP Assessment was able to measure changes in Ivan's and Jean's cognitive strategy use and its impact on performance of meaningful tasks. Ivan demonstrated a 46% increase in performance mastery and a 29% increase in cognitive strategy use with most improvements identified in his ability to sense information, initiate action, and continue performance. Jean demonstrated a 71% increase in performance mastery and a 32% increase in cognitive strategy use. Her greatest improvements were in the ability to recall schemes, self‐evaluate, and initiate action. Conclusion: The two critical case stories shared in this study suggest that the PRPP Assessment has emerging evidence of clinical utility when used with Aboriginal people with acquired brain impairment. The information gained revealed strengths in performance; it was effective in measuring change in cognitive strategy use, was able to inform the goal setting process, and guided intervention to support cognitive strategy use during task performance. Objectives: Providing optimal support for carers of people with advanced cancer is critical to facilitating discharge home from hospital. Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool–Intervention (CSNAT‐I) has shown promise in supporting carers' needs in this context. This study aimed to explore patient and carers experiences with and views on the acceptability of the CSNAT‐I delivered by occupational therapists in an acute oncology setting. Methods: People with advanced cancer and their carers who had previously received the CSNAT‐I as part of usual care while admitted to an Australian specialist cancer centre or acute hospital were invited to participate in interviews exploring their perceptions of the intervention. Data were analysed thematically. Results: Two patients and 10 carers participated in semi‐structured interviews. Three themes were constructed from the data: Carers viewed the CSNAT‐I as comprehensive process that (1) 'covered everything' related to discharge planning; (2) generated an 'increased awareness of needs' for themselves, patients, and clinicians; and (3) triggered an emotional response of feeling 'wrapped up in care' that was maintained as they moved from hospital to home. Conclusion: This study has demonstrated that the CSNAT‐I was highly acceptable to carers as part of existing discharge processes supporting them through the transition from hospital to home and can be delivered by occupational therapists and other clinicians with a natural synergy to discharge planning. Introduction: Many children in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Australia experience complex trauma and its developmental impacts. Internationally, occupational therapists work with complex trauma and use sensory‐based, integrative, and functional approaches. The practices of occupational therapists in Aotearoa and Australia with children experiencing complex trauma have not previously been described. Methods: This article reports the quantitative results of a mixed‐methods study which profiled occupational therapists' practice in Aotearoa and Australia with children aged 0 to 12 years old who experienced complex trauma. Twenty‐five participants completed the survey. The average age of participants was 43 years (SD = 10.65), all were female (n = 25), and most identified as New Zealand European (n = 11) or Australian European (n = 9). A survey was distributed via Occupational Therapy New Zealand – Whakaora Ngangahau Aotearoa and Occupational Therapy Australia. Results: The majority of participants had a bachelor's degree (64%) and worked in community settings (76%). Fourteen participants (56%) used sensory approaches. The most common assessments used were those of sensory processing (n = 12, 48%) and observation (n = 12, 48%). The Sensory Profile was the most popular standardised assessment (n = 8, 32%). The most common interventions used with children experiencing complex trauma were sensory (n = 13, 52%) and play based (n = 13, 52%). Most participants reported not adapting their practices for Māori or Aboriginal children. Most participants felt somewhat prepared (n = 15) for working with complex trauma, with most reporting a lack of experience in this area (n = 10). Supervision was suggested by 92% (n = 23) of the participants. Conclusion: Sensory‐based practices were most common among occupational therapists in Aotearoa and Australia who worked with children experiencing complex trauma. The participants suggested supervision, social support, and practical training when working with complex trauma. Advocacy and research are required within this subspecialty, and further professional engagement in the application of culturally safe practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Two parallel versions (A and B) of the Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS) were developed in the United Kingdom (UK) as a stroke‐specific screen of five key cognitive domains commonly affected post‐stroke. We aimed to develop the Australian versions A and B (OCS‐AU), including Australian cut‐scores indicative of impairment. We hypothesised there to be no difference in performance between the UK and Australian normative data cohorts. Methods: Our multidisciplinary expert panel used the UK pre‐defined process to develop the OCS‐AU versions A and B. We then conducted a cross‐sectional normative study. We purposively recruited community‐dwelling, Australian‐born, and educated adults; with no known cognitive impairment; representative of age, sex, education level, and living location; at seven sites (four metropolitan, three regional) across four Australian states. Participants completed one or both OCS‐AU versions in a randomised order. Australian cohorts were compared with the corresponding UK cohorts for demographics using Pearson's chi‐squared test for sex and education, and Welch two‐sample t test for age. For the cut‐scores indicating cognitive impairment, the fifth (95th) percentiles and group mean performance score for each scored item were compared using Welch two‐sample t tests. The pre‐defined criteria for retaining OCS cut‐scores had no statistically significant difference in either percentile or group mean scores for each scored item. Results: Participants (n = 83) were recruited: fifty‐eight completed version A [age (years) mean = 61,SD = 15; 62% female], 60 completed version B [age (years) mean = 62,SD = 13, 53% female], and 35 completed both [age (years) mean = 64,SD = 11, 54% female]. Education was different between the cohorts for version B (12 years, p = 0.002). Cut‐scores for all 16 scored items for the OCS‐AU version B and 15/16 for version A met our pre‐defined criteria for retaining the OCS cut scores. Conclusions: The OCS‐AU provides clinicians with an Australian‐specific, first‐line cognitive screening tool for people after stroke. Early screening can guide treatment and management.
