Objectives: To describe the prevalence of solarium use among representative samples of Australian adolescents (12-17 years) and adults (18-69 years). Methods: In national surveys conducted in 2003/04 and 2006/07 using equivalent methods, n=11,509 Australian adolescents and adults self-reported their use of solaria. Results: In 2006/07 10.6% of adults had 'ever' used a solarium, and use was most prevalent among women aged 18 to 24 (17.1%) and 25 to 44 (20.7%). Few adolescents (2.5%) had ever used a solarium. The prevalence of past year use was much lower (0.6% of adolescents, 1.5% of adults) and there was a significant reduction among adults between surveys (OR=0.69, 95% CI=0.52-0.94). Adults' attitudes related to past year solarium use were preference for a suntan (OR=4.68, 95% CI=2.48-8.85); perceived protan attitudes of peers (OR=2.10, 95% CI=1.17-3.77), belief that a suntan looks healthy (OR=1.92, 95% CI=1.09-3.39); and perceiving they have some risk of getting skin cancer (OR=1.69, 95% CI=1.03-2.78). Conclusions and implications: Although solarium use in Australia is relatively low, it is highest among young adult women. These data show encouraging downward trends in use, and provide a foundation for monitoring the impact of forthcoming regulatory changes to the solarium industry. Objective: To assess community attitudes and practices in relation to fake tanning lotions. Methods: 1,509 New South Wales residents aged 15 years and over, selected at random, completed a computer-assisted telephone survey. Results: Thirty-three per cent of respondents thought fake tanning lotions were unsafe. In relation to The Cancer Council marketing fake tanning lotions, more than three-fifths thought The Cancer Council would be promoting tans, although 62% thought it would be a good thing as fake tans are safer than tanning in the sun. Nine per cent of respondents had used fake tanning lotions in the past 12 months. Almost half (48%) of female current users used fake tanning lotions occasionally or only for special occasions during the past summer. In particular settings, the sunscreen and hat-wearing practices of female users and non-users of fake tanning lotions differed significantly. Conclusion: There appears to be no consistent data to suggest that fake tanning lotions may be used as a safer alternative to sun tanning. However, there is a responsibility to at least disseminate accurate information on these products.

Objective: To explore the information received by NRT users; whether patterns of NRT use are in accordance with recommendations; and to identify the characteristics of those using NRT products. Methods: A cross-sectional, omnibus telephone survey of 1,509 community members was conducted in New South Wales, Australia in 2000. The survey identified 215 current and former smokers who completed additional questions regarding their most recent quit attempt. Results: Of the 215 current and former smokers, 67 (31.2%) had used NRT on their most recent quit attempt. The majority of NRT use (61%) lasted for less than two weeks. More than 40% of NRT users reported receiving no instructions from a doctor or pharmacist on how to use the product. Approximately one-third of NRT use was associated with concomitant smoking, with 10% of NRT use being associated with little or no reduction in reported daily cigarette consumption. Only 41.8% of NRT users reported a doctor had recommended using the product. Conclusions: Despite the small size of the sample, the data suggest a level of inappropriate use of NRT products in the community. Implications: Wider use and effective provision of support and advice to NRT users in the community must be addressed if this product is to achieve its optimal potential in aiding smoking cessation.

Objective: To assess the prevalence and predictors of perceived unmet needs among women diagnosed with breast cancer, with a particular focus on the impact of location (rural/urban). Method: A random sample of women in NSW diagnosed with breast cancer was surveyed during 1995-96. The Breast Cancer Patients' Needs Questionnaire (BR-CPNQ) explores patients' perceived needs across five domains: psychological, health information, physical/daily living, patient care/support and interpersonal communication. Items assessing breast cancer specific needs and access to services and resources were included. Of 235 eligible rural women, 134 (57%) consented to participate and 129 (55%) returned completed surveys. Of 196 eligible urban women, 102 (52%) consented to participate and 100 (51%) returned completed surveys. Results: For 12 of the 52 items, at least one-third of the sample reported ever having a moderate/high need for help. Of the 15 highest moderate or high unmet needs, 10 related to health information and three to psychological needs. There were few differences in the prevalence of needs reported by rural and urban women. Only in the physical/daily living domain were rural women more likely than urban women to report some need for help (OR=2.59, 95% CI 1.21-5.52). Conclusions: Unmet needs, particularly in the information and psycho-social domains, are reported by both rural and urban women with breast cancer, with sub-groups experiencing different types of needs. Implications: There is a need to develop and trial targeted and innovative strategies to meet the health information and psychological needs of women with breast cancer, and the physical/daily living needs of rural women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Results of a study suggest a growing inequity exists in Australia in the spending on anti-smoking activities vs revenues from cigarette sales to minors. The research was to determine whether changes in government revenue from sale of cigarettes to minors and the proportion of the revenue spent in an effort to prevent adolescents from taking up the habit, 1990-93. One who starts smoking at 14 or before is five times as likely to die of lung cancer as one who starts at 24 or later and 15 times as likely to die of lung cancer as never-smokers.

A study was conducted to assess the needs of rural women who travel to the city for breast cancer treatment. Researchers gathered 80 women aged between 34 and 80 living in rural NSW and South Australia. These women completed a telephone survey on their needs. The study's results revealed that more than 90% of these women travelled because of the lack of treatment centers in their area and on average spent about 6.79 weeks away from their families. It also showed that 89% has social and practical probelms, 39% received financial assistance, and 19% had trouble claiming money they were elegible.
