As reported by Finley (1969), this condition is frequently seen in Australia. It is easily diagnosed, rather difficult to treat and its aetiology and pathogenesis awaits elucidation. It is a dermatosis which affects mainly women with its highest incidence between 30 and 45 years of age. Besides the usual typical examples of perioral dermatitis, during the last year we have seen three rather exceptional examples affecting males. From our general experience and an appreciation of the literature on this worldwide disease, we have been prompted to prepare this report and to speculate on the aetiology and pathogenesis of perioral dermatitis. Stucco keratosis is one form of the numerous papular papillomatous keratoses. It is a condition diagnosed with ease if its essential clinical and histological characteristics are considered together. However, the clinical features taken alone or the histological features taken alone are not diagnostic. Clinically similar lesions are seen over the ankle region of some patients with ichthyosis vulgaris or acquired ichthyosis. The histology in these cases does not show papillomatosis, but ichthyosiform atrophy of the epidermis. The histology of the skin of the ankle region of elderly male patients in Australia shows a high proportion of ichthyosis-like features. The papillomatous keratoses should be distinguished from papillomatous seborrhoeic keratoses by the lack of horn cysts and lack of basaloid cells. This distinction is Important because the papillomatous keratoses may be of precancerous nature, while seborrhoeic keratoses are not.
