Aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) has substantial impacts on regional and global climate changes, whereas it remains one of the largest uncertainties among various climate forcing factors. The 40-year detailed clear-sky ADRFs over China from 1981 to 2020 are systematically studied based on the MERRA-2 satellite reanalysis data, which hopefully benefit for the evaluation of the performances of aerosol-climate models. The clear-sky shortwave ADRFs show diverse spatial distributions with strong top of atmosphere (TOA) and surface cooling and atmospheric heating over the Taklamakan desert, eastern China, and southern China. A high clear-sky longwave surface ADRF reaching ∼6.5 W/m2 over dust source regions is found, and continuous increase of ADRFs over the Taklamakan desert during the past four decades may indicate that dust episodes therein are becoming severe. The mean clear-sky shortwave surface, TOA and atmospheric ADRFs, and longwave surface ADRF over China during 1981–2020 are found to be −12.3, −5.1, 7.2, and 1.0 W/m2, respectively. The seasonality of clear-sky ADRFs shows strongest mean values in spring, moderate forcings in summer and fall, and weakest levels in winter. The monthly average clear-sky surface and TOA ADRFs over China vary by approximately twofold, ranging the weakest values of −7.8 and −3.9 W/m2 in December to the strongest −17.6 and −7.1 W/m2 in April, respectively. Distinctive seasonal and monthly patterns of clear-sky ADRFs are generally seen among the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Tarim Basin in China, while the monthly ADRF patterns over a typical area of these four regions are similar during four different decades. The clear-sky ADRFs over China are highly correlated with aerosol optical thickness, and dust has strong influences on clear-sky shortwave aerosol direct radiative forcing among column aerosol compositions. Abstract: Traffic congestion and air pollution were two major challenges for the planners of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. The Beijing municipal government implemented a package of temporary transportation control measures during the event. In this paper, we report the results of a recent research project that investigated the effects of these measures on urban motor vehicle emissions in Beijing. Bottom–up methodology has been used to develop grid-based emission inventories with micro-scale vehicle activities and speed-dependent emission factors. The urban traffic emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 μm or less (PM10) during the 2008 Olympics were reduced by 55.5%, 56.8%, 45.7% and 51.6%, respectively, as compared to the grid-based emission inventory before the Olympics. Emission intensity was derived from curbside air quality monitoring at the North 4th Ring Road site, located about 7 km from the National Stadium. Comparison between the emission intensity before and during the 2008 Olympics shows a reduction of 44.5% and 49.0% in daily CO and NOx emission from motor vehicles. The results suggest that reasonable traffic system improvement strategies along with vehicle technology improvements can contribute to controlling total motor vehicle emissions in Beijing after the Olympic Games. A total of 13 diesel buses and 12 diesel trucks in Macao were tested using portable emission measurement systems (PEMS) including a SEMTECH-DS for gaseous emissions and a SEMTECH-PPMD for PM 2.5 . The average emission rates of gaseous pollutants and CO 2 are developed with the operating mode defined by the instantaneous vehicle specific power (VSP) and vehicle speed. Both distance-based and fuel mass-based emission factors for gaseous pollutants (e.g., CO, THC and NO X ) are further estimated under typical driving conditions. The average distance-based NO X emission of heavy-duty buses (HDBs) is higher than 13 g km −1 . Considering the unfavorable conditions for selective reductions catalyst (SCR) systems, such as low-speed driving conditions, more effective technology options (e.g., dedicated natural gas buses and electric buses) should be considered by policy makers in Macao. We identified strong effects of the vehicle size, engine displacement and driving conditions on real-world CO 2 emission factors and fuel consumption for diesel vehicles. Therefore, detailed profiles regarding vehicle specifications can reduce the uncertainty in their fleet-average on-road fuel consumption. In addition, strong correlations between relative emission factors and driving conditions indicated by the average speed of generated micro-trips are identified based on a micro-trip method. For example, distance-based emission factors of HDBs will increase by 39% for CO, 29% for THC, 43% for NO X and 26% for CO 2 when the average speed decreases from 30 km h −1 to 20 km h −1 . The mitigation of on-road emissions from diesel buses and trucks by improving traffic conditions through effective traffic and economic management measures is therefore required.
