Airborne particles containing pathogens such as bacteria (e.g., M. tuberculosis) or virions (e.g., influenza or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)) can cause infections. It has been speculated that the outflow from indoor air purifiers with a directional outlet could entrain and spread pathogen-containing aerosol particles. To date, only the case of indoor air purifiers with a directional outflow has been considered, and here we investigate an indoor air purifier with a circumferential outflow diffuser—an alternative design solution that is already commercially available. We measured the airflow velocity at two different angles to the surface of the circumferential outflow diffuser and two blower speeds. We visualized in scattered light the deflection of a vertical mist spray cone from a sneeze-simulating nebulizer parallel to the side of the air purifier. We found a significant difference in airflow velocities for different angles to the circumferential outflow diffuser: 0.01–0.02 m/s for 0° vs. 0.01–0.65 m/s for 45° at 1 m distance. We observed no significant deflection of the sneeze-simulating spray cone at the minimum blower speed and a 5 cm deflection at the maximum speed. The deflection of the sneeze-simulating spray mist particles by the tested indoor air purifier with the circumferential outflow, under the experimental conditions, is low relative to the recommended safer distances between people in indoor spaces. We conclude that indoor air purifiers with circumferential outflow diffusers have a lower potential to spread infectious aerosols in indoor spaces compared to devices with unidirectional outflow.

Chlorine atoms play a key role in the oxidative potential of the atmosphere and biogeochemical cycling of selected elements. This study provides a decadal analysis (2010−2019) of chloride ions in PM2.5 particles in the city of Montreal, where these are most concentrated systematically in the winter (up to 1.6 µg/m3). We also herein present the measurement of photolabile chlorine, which includes chlorine-containing compounds (e.g., Cl2, HOCl, ClNO2, ClNO3, and BrCl) that release chlorine atoms upon interaction with radiation, in urban Montreal, Canada using Cl2-RPGE (Cl2 Reactive Phase Gas Extraction) tubes and quantifying the chlorinated product by GC-MS. Photolabile chlorine in urban Montreal was measured during a discontinuous period primarily in summer 2018 and winter 2019 with a time resolution of 30 min, with concentrations ranging from 3 to 545 ng/m3 expressed as Cl2. The reported values are considered lower limits, as compounds such as HOCl and ClNO2 can only be partially converted in the current setup. The largest peak of gaseous photolabile chlorine occurred in the winter, when significant sources of anthropogenic salt are used in snow removal in the city. This coincides with observed chloride ion measurements in airborne particles, implying that anthropogenic salt addition produces photoactive chlorine. The maximum chlorine signal was consistently obtained during the daytime, which is in accordance with the tropospheric radiation profile. Complementary photochemistry laboratory experiments indicated that upon tropospheric radiation (340 ≤ λ ≤ 400 nm; UVA), an increase (20–100%) was observed, confirming the formation of Cl atoms from photolabile chlorine compounds. Thus, this portable technique is adequate for Cl atoms and photolabile chlorine-containing compounds upon photolysis using UVA lamps. High-resolution S/TEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to evaluate collected particle morphology and composition. The behavior of complementary pollutants (O3, CO, PM2.5, and NOx) was also briefly discussed. We herein discuss the measurement of photolabile halogens within a northern urban metropolitan environment and the impact of anthropogenic sources on chlorine concentrations.

Mercury is one of the most toxic metals and has global importance due to the biomagnification and bioaccumulation of organomercury via the aquatic food web. The physical and chemical transformations of various mercury species in the atmosphere strongly influence their composition, phase, transport characteristics and deposition rate back to the ground. Modeling efforts to assess global cycling of mercury require an accurate understanding of atmospheric mercury chemistry. Yet, there are several key uncertainties precluding accurate modeling of physical and chemical transformations. We focus this article on recent studies (since 2015) on improving our understanding of the atmospheric chemistry of mercury. We discuss recent advances in determining the dominant atmospheric oxidant of elemental mercury (Hg0) and understanding the oxidation reactions of Hg0 by halogen atoms and by nitrate radical (NO3)—in the aqueous reduction of oxidized mercury compounds (HgII) as well as in the heterogeneous reactions of Hg on atmospheric-relevant surfaces. The need for future research to improve understanding of the fate and transformation of mercury in the atmosphere is also discussed.
