To evaluate the impact of different momentum control variable (CV) schemes (CV5, the momentum control variable option with ψχ and CV7, the momentum control variable option with UV) on radar data assimilation (DA) in weather research and forecasting model data-assimilation (WRFDA) systems, a heavy snowfall in central and eastern regions of China, which started on 6 February 2022, was taken as a case in this study. The results of the wind-field increments from the single observation tests indicated that the wind-field increments had a larger range of influence when stream function and velocity potential (ψχ) were used as momentum control variables in CV5. Some spurious increments were also generated in the wind-field analysis, since CV5 tended to maintain the integrated value of the wind field. When U-wind and V-wind were used as control variables in CV7, the wind-field increments had a smaller impact range, and there was less dependence among different locations on the wind increments. For the heavy snow case, the CV7 schemes displayed some improvements in simulating the composite reflectivity compared to the other two experiments, since the composite reflectivity in the CV5 and control experiments were overestimated to some level. It was also found that the RMSEs were lower in the CV7 compared to those in the CV5 in the short-term forecasts during the data-assimilation cycles. Results also indicated that the CV7 had a more significant effect on the 6 h accumulated precipitation forecasts. Meanwhile, the experiment Exp_CV7 achieved the best ETS and FSS scores among the three groups of experiments, while Exp_CV5 appeared to be generally superior to the CTRL. In summary, the precipitation of Exp_CV7 yielded the rainfall intensity and location most close to the observation compared to those from both the CTRL and Exp_CV5 experiments. Precipitation forecasting is an immensely significant aspect of meteorological prediction. Accurate weather predictions facilitate services in sectors such as transportation, agriculture, and tourism. In recent years, deep learning-based radar echo extrapolation techniques have found effective applications in precipitation forecasting. However, the ability of existing methods to extract and characterize complex spatiotemporal features from radar echo images remains insufficient, resulting in suboptimal forecasting accuracy. This paper proposes a novel extrapolation algorithm based on a dual-branch encoder–decoder and spatiotemporal Gated Recurrent Unit. In this model, the dual-branch encoder–decoder structure independently encodes radar echo images in the temporal and spatial domains, thereby avoiding interference between spatiotemporal information. Additionally, we introduce a Multi-Scale Channel Attention Module (MSCAM) to learn global and local feature information from each encoder layer, thereby enhancing focus on radar image details. Furthermore, we propose a Spatiotemporal Attention Gated Recurrent Unit (STAGRU) that integrates attention mechanisms to handle temporal evolution and spatial relationships within radar data, enabling the extraction of spatiotemporal information from a broader receptive field. Experimental results demonstrate the model's ability to accurately predict morphological changes and motion trajectories of radar images on real radar datasets, exhibiting superior performance compared to existing models in terms of various evaluation metrics. This study effectively improves the accuracy of precipitation forecasting in radar echo images, provides technical support for the short-range forecasting of precipitation, and has good application prospects. In order to explore the improvement of radar radial velocity data assimilation on the initial and forecast fields of typhoons, this study assimilates the quality-controlled radial velocity data in the case of Typhoon Linfa (2015) using the three-dimensional variational data assimilation system of the weather research and forecasting model (WRF-3DVAR), and then conducts several sensitivity experiments with different horizontal length scale factors. The results show that reducing the horizontal length scale factor of the background error covariance can effectively assimilate the micro- and meso-scale information from radar data and improve the forecasting effect of Linfa. Following the optimization of the horizontal length scale factor, the radial velocity data assimilation can improve the typhoon wind field structure, produce reasonable cyclonic wind field increments, and further improve the dynamic and thermal structure of the inner core area of the typhoon. The study is based on the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) and the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system. Based on two different control variables, the effects of radar radial velocity assimilation in forecasting of the tropical cyclone (TC) Kompasu were evaluated. The single observation experiment showed that DA_ψχ produces cyclonic increments, while DA_UV only produces increments in the same direction as the observation. DA_ψχ significantly enhances the wind field at 850 hPa with a large number of unphysical cyclonic increments. On the other hand, DA_UV produces reasonable cyclonic increments to enhance the TC. The assimilation of DA_UV makes the surface wind enhanced and the sea level pressure at the TC center reduced. The circular structure of the DA_ψχ wind field is not clear and neither is the large wind area concentrated. In addition, the DA_ψχ shows spurious convection at the high altitude of the vertical cross section, while the DA_UV presents enhanced large wind area at the bottom. The RMSE of the radial velocity is smaller during the circular assimilation in DA_UV. DA_ψχ does not improve the track forecast of Kompasu, while DA_UV shows a significant improvement by the track forecast. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of radar and surface data assimilation on the forecast of a nocturnal squall line initiated above the stable boundary layer in the Yangtze–Huaihe River is investigated by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and its three-dimensional variational assimilation system (WRFDA 3DVar). Results show that the assimilation of radar and surface data can improve the prediction of the convection initiation time, height and vertical ascending motion during the early stage of the squall line formation by adjusting the thermodynamic structure, circulation patterns, water vapor conditions and hydrometeor mixing ratios. Although the radar and surface data assimilation can improve the forecast of the location of the squall line to a certain extent, the squall line is stronger in the radar data assimilation than that in the surface data assimilation, leading to stronger radar reflectivity and heavier precipitation. The assimilation of both radar and surface data has a more positive impact on the forecast skill than the assimilation of either type of data. Moreover, during the mature stage of the squall line, radar and surface data assimilation can enhance the intensity of the surface cold pool. Specifically, radar data assimilation or assimilating the two data simultaneously can produce a stronger cold pool than only assimilating surface data, which is more conducive to the maintenance and development of the squall line. In this study, a polarimetric radar forward model operator was developed for the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model that was based on a scattering algorithm using the T-matrix methodology. Three microphysics schemes—Thompson, Morrison 2-moment, and Milbrandt-Yau 2-moment—were supported in the operator. This radar forward operator used the microphysics, thermodynamic, and wind fields from WRF model forecasts to compute horizontal reflectivity, radial velocity, and polarimetric variables including differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) for S-band radar. A case study with severe convective storms was used to examine the accuracy of the radar operator. Output from the radar operator was compared to real radar observations from the Weather Surveillance Radar–1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radar. The results showed that the radar forward operator generated realistic polarimetric signatures. The distribution of polarimetric variables agreed well with the hydrometer properties produced by different microphysics schemes. Similar to the observed polarimetric signatures, radar operator output showed ZDR and KDP columns from low-to-mid troposphere, reflecting the large amount of rain within strong updrafts. The Typhoon Nakri passed the Jeju Island in Korea (1-3 August 2014) and recorded one-day rainfall of 1182 mm atWitse-Oreum (a place name where a small volcanic cone is) of the Hallasan Mountain, Korea. This one-day rainfall amount was the highest rainfall that was ever recorded in Korea. As the altitude of Witse-Oreum is 1673 m, it was believed that the orographic effect enhanced the rainfall depth significantly. It was also argued that the maximum rainfall could be recorded in some other locations in the Hallasan Mountain. In this study, the rainfall event due to the Typhoon Nakri in the Jeju Island was analyzed using the radar and rain gauge data that were collected during this rainfall event. Fortunately, two radars are available on the eastern and western side of the Jeju Island. The entire Hallasan Mountain is covered by these two radars. A total of 23 rain gauges are also available in the Jeju Island. As a first step, independent ground-level Z-R relations were derived for every 250 m interval from the sea-level. Each Z-R relation was then applied to the corresponding-altitude radar reflectivity data to generate the rain rate field over the Jeju Island. Finally, the generated radar rain rate data were examined fully to evaluate the orographic effect in the Hallasan Mountain, also to locate the point where the maximum rain rate was recorded. This result shows that the maximum one-day rainfall amount could be up to 1500 mm, which was about 30% higher than the rain gauge measurement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several types of non-precipitation echoes appear in radar images and disrupt the weather forecasting process. An anomalous propagation echo is an unwanted observation result similar to a precipitation echo. It occurs through radar-beam ducting because of the temperature, humidity distribution, and other complicated atmospheric conditions. Anomalous propagation echoes should be removed because they make weather forecasting difficult. In this paper, we suggest an ensemble classification method based on an artificial neural network and a clustering-based subset-selection method. This method allows us to implement an efficient classification method when a feature space has complicated distributions. By separating the input data into atomic and non-atomic clusters, each derived cluster will receive its own base classifier. In the experiments, we compared our method with a standalone artificial neural network classifier. The suggested ensemble classifier showed 84.14% performance, which was about 2% higher than that of the k-means clustering-based ensemble classifier and about 4% higher than the standalone artificial neural network classifier. Precipitation nowcasting has been gaining importance in the operational weather forecast, being essential for economic and social development. Conventional methods of precipitation nowcasting are mainly focused on the task of radar echo extrapolation. In recent years, deep learning methods have been used in this task. Nevertheless, raising the accuracy and extending the lead time of prediction remains as a challenging problem. To address the problem, we proposed a Multi-Scale Criss-Cross Attention Context Sensing Long Short-Term Memory (MCCS-LSTM). In this model, Context Sensing framework (CS framework) focuses on contextual correlations, and Multi-Scale Spatiotemporal block (MS block) with criss-cross attention is designed to extract multi-scale spatiotemporal feature and full-image dependency. To validate the effectiveness of our model, we conduct experiments on CIKM AnalytiCup 2017 data sets and Guangdong Province of China radar data sets. By comparing with existing deep learning models, the results demonstrate that the MCCS-LSTM has the best prediction performance, especially for predicting accuracy with longer lead times. The impact of assimilating radar radial velocity and reflectivity on the analyses and forecast of Hurricane IKE is investigated within the framework of the WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model and its three-dimensional variational (3DVar) data assimilation system, including the hydrometeor control variables. Hurricane IKE in the year 2008 was chosen as the study case. It was found that assimilating radar data is able to effectively improve the small-scale information of the hurricane vortex area in the model background. Radar data assimilation experiments yield significant cyclonic wind increments in the inner-core area of the hurricane, enhancing the intensity of the hurricane in the model background. On the other hand, by extending the traditional control variables to include the hydrometeor control variables, the assimilation of radar reflectivity can effectively adjust the water vapor and hydrometeors of the background, further improving the track and intensity forecast of the hurricane. Nowcasting is an important technique for weather forecasting because sudden weather changes significantly affect human life. The encoding-forecasting model, which is a state-of-the-art architecture in the field of data-driven radar extrapolation, does not particularly focus on the latest data when forecasting natural phenomena. This paper proposes a weighted broadcasting method that emphasizes the latest data of the time step to improve the nowcasting performance. This weighted broadcasting method allows the most recent rainfall patterns to have a greater impact on the forecasting network by extending the architecture of the existing encoding-forecasting model. Experimental results show that the proposed model is 1.74% and 2.20% better than the existing encoding-forecasting model in terms of mean absolute error and critical success index, respectively. In the case of heavy rainfall with an intensity of 30 mm/h or higher, the proposed model was more than 30% superior to the existing encoding-forecasting model. Therefore, applying the weighted broadcasting method, which explicitly places a high emphasis on the latest information, to the encoding-forecasting model is considered as an improvement that is applicable to the state-of-the-art implementation of data-driven radar-based precipitation nowcasting. Understanding and forecasting hurricanes remains a challenge for the operational and research communities. To accurately predict the Tropical Cyclone (TC) evolution requires properly reflecting the storm's inner core dynamics by using: (i) high-resolution models; (ii) realistic physical parameterizations. The microphysical processes and their representation in cloud-permitting models are of crucial importance. In particular, the assumed Particle Size Distribution (PSD) functions affect nearly all formulated microphysical processes and are among the most fundamental assumptions in the bulk microphysics schemes. This paper analyzes the impact of the PSD assumptions on simulated hurricanes and their synthetic radiometric signatures. It determines the most realistic, among the available set of assumptions, based on comparison to multi-parameter satellite observations. Here we simulated 2005′s category-5 Hurricane Rita using the cloud-permitting community Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) with two different microphysical schemes and with seven different modifications of the parametrized hydrometeor properties within one of the two schemes. We then used instrument simulators to produce satellite-like observations. The study consisted in evaluating the structure of the different simulated storms by comparing, for each storm, the calculated microwave signatures with actual satellite observations made by (a) the passive microwave radiometer that was carried by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite—the TRMM microwave imager TMI, (b) TRMM's precipitation radar (PR) and (c) the ocean-wind-vector scatterometer carried by the QuikSCAT satellite. The analysis reveals that the different choices of microphysical parameters do produce significantly different microwave signatures, allowing an objective determination of a "best" parameter combination whose resulting signatures are collectively most consistent with the wind and precipitation observations obtained from the satellites. Ground-based remote sensing equipment have the potential to be used for the nowcasting of the tephra hazard from volcanic eruptions. To do so raw data from the equipment first need to be accurately transformed to tephra-related physical quantities. In order to establish these relations for Sakurajima volcano, Japan, we propose a methodology based on high-resolution simulations. An eruption that occurred at Sakurajima on 16 July 2018 is used as the basis of a pilot study. The westwards dispersal of the tephra cloud was ideal for the observation network that has been installed near the volcano. In total, the plume and subsequent tephra cloud were recorded by 2 XMP radars, 1 lidar and 3 optical disdrometers, providing insight on all phases of the eruption, from plume generation to tephra transport away from the volcano. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and FALL3D models were used to reconstruct the transport and deposition patterns. Simulated airborne tephra concentration and accumulated load were linked, respectively, to lidar backscatter intensity and radar reflectivity. Overall, results highlight the possibility of using such a high-resolution modelling-based methodology as a reliable complementary strategy to common approaches for retrieving tephra-related quantities from remote sensing data. Cloud and precipitation radar mounted on a polar orbiting satellite opens up a new opportunity for global wind observation to improve numerical weather forecasting and prevent weather disasters. However, no related works have been done to retrieve the wind field for spaceborne cloud and precipitation radar. This is mainly because the high-speed motion of satellites makes wind field retrieval complex. This paper developed the first spaceborne version of the velocity–azimuth display (VAD) technique for wind field retrieval, which was originally created for ground-based radar. After derivation of VAD for spaceborne radar, we found that the product of the azimuth of the radar beam and its first harmonic was introduced into the Fourier series of radar radial velocity due to the motion of the satellites. The wind retrieval equations were developed by considering the effects of satellite motion and conical scanning strategy of radar. Numerical simulations of the spaceborne radar showed that the proposed VAD method provided a mean vertical profile of the horizontal wind with high vertical resolution over a large observation swath. Validations on airborne radar data with the same conical scan strategy as the spaceborne radar were carried out to capture the average wind structure in one hurricane event. The real data results demonstrated that the wind-retrieved results by the proposed method were consistent with the ground truth data, indicating the potential use of our proposal for spaceborne radar. An improved approach to derive pseudo water vapor mass mixing ratio and in- cloud potential temperature was developed in this paper to better initialize numerical weather prediction (NWP) and build convective-scale predictions of severe weather events. The process included several steps. The first was to identify areas of deep moist convection, utilizing Vertically Integrated Liquid water (VIL) derived from a mosaicked 3D radar reflectivity field. Then, pseudo- water vapor and pseudo- in- cloud potential temperature observations were derived based on the VIL. For potential temperature, the latent heat initialization for stratiform cloud and moist adiabatic initialization for deep moist convection were used based on a cloud analysis method. The third step was to assimilate the derived pseudo- water vapor and potential temperature observations, together with radar radial velocity and reflectivity into a convective-scale NWP model during data assimilation cycles spanning several hours. Finally, 3-h forecasts were launched each hour during the data assimilation period. The effects of radar data and pseudo- observation assimilation on the prediction of rainfall associated with convective systems surrounding the Meiyu front in 2018 were explored using two real cases. Two sets of experiments, each including several experiments in each real case, were designed to compare the effects of assimilation radar and pseudo- observations on the ensuing forecasts. Relative to the control experiment without data assimilation and radar experiment, the analyses and forecasts of convections were found to be improved for the two Meiyu front cases after pseudo- water vapor and potential temperature information was assimilated. Weather radar echo plays an important role in early warning and timely forecasting of severe weather. However, the radar echo may not be accurate enough to predict or analyze small-scale weather phenomenon due to the degradation of the observed radar. In order to solve this problem, some radar echo super-resolution reconstruction algorithms have been proposed, but the algorithm may result in an excessively smooth edge and detail in a local region. To reconstruct radar echo with better edges and finer details, a novel nonlocal self-similarity sparse representation (NSSR) model is proposed. The NSSR model is based on the sparse representation of weather radar echoes to better reconstruct the echo edge and detail information. We exploit the radar echo nonlocal self-similarity to recover more realistic details based on the NSSR model. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed NSSR outperforms current general-purpose radar echo super-resolution approaches on both visual effects and objective radar echo quality. This study investigated precipitation distribution patterns in association with atmospheric rivers (ARs). The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was employed to simulate two strong atmospheric river events. The precipitation forecasts were highly sensitive to cloud microphysics parameterization schemes. Thus, radar observed and simulated Z H and Z D R were evaluated to provide information about the drop-size distribution (DSD). Four microphysics schemes (WSM-5, WSM-6, Thompson, and WDM-6) with nested simulations (3 km, 1 km, and 1/3 km) were conducted. One of the events mostly contained bright-band (BB) rainfall and lasted less than 24 h, while the other contained both BB and non-bright-band (NBB) rainfall, and lasted about 27 h. For each event, there was no clear improvement in the 1/3 km model, over the 1 km model. Overall, the WDM-6 microphysics scheme best represented the rainfall and the DSD. It appears that this scheme performed well, due to its relative simplicity in ice and mixed-phase microphysics, while providing double-moment predictions of warm rain microphysics (i.e., cloud and rain mixing ratio and number concentration). The other schemes tested either provided single-moment predictions of all classes or double-moment predictions of ice and rain (Thompson). Considering the shallow nature of precipitation in atmospheric rivers and the high-frequency of the orographic effect enhancing the warm rain process, these assumptions appear to be applicable over the southern San Francisco Bay Area.
