Due to budget and sensor technology constraints, a single sensor cannot simultaneously provide observational images with both a high spatial and temporal resolution. To solve the above problem, the spatiotemporal fusion (STF) method was proposed and proved to be an indispensable tool for monitoring land surface dynamics. There are relatively few systematic reviews of the STF method. Bibliometrics is a valuable method for analyzing the scientific literature, but it has not yet been applied to the comprehensive analysis of the STF method. Therefore, in this paper, we use bibliometrics and scientific mapping to analyze the 2967 citation data from the Web of Science from 1991 to 2023 in a metrological manner, covering the themes of STF, data fusion, multi-temporal analysis, and spatial analysis. The results of the literature analysis reveal that the number of articles displays a slow to rapid increase during the study period, but decreases significantly in 2023. Research institutions in China (1059 papers) and the United States (432 papers) are the top two contributors in the field. The keywords "Sentinel", "deep learning" (DL), and "LSTM" (Long Short-Term Memory) appeared most frequently in the past three years. In the future, remote sensing spatiotemporal fusion research can address more of the limitations of heterogeneous landscapes and climatic conditions to improve fused images' accuracy. Most Penman-Monteith-Leuning (PML) evapotranspiration (ET) modeling studies are dominated by consideration of meteorological, energy, and land use information, etc., but the dynamic coupling of soil moisture content (SM), especially in terms of improving accuracy through assimilation, lacks sufficient attention. This paper proposes a research framework for the dynamic coupling simulation of PML model and SM based on data assimilation, i.e., the remote sensing monitored SM is combined with soil evaporation of PML to obtain high-precision time-continuous SM data through data assimilation; simultaneously, dynamical soil evaporation coefficients are generated based on the assimilated SM to improve the simulation accuracy of the PML model. The new scheme was validated at a typical irrigation zone in north China and showed obvious improvements in both SM and ET simulations. Moreover, the effect of the assimilation of SM on the simulation accuracy of ET for different crop growth periods is further analyzed. Air-quality monitoring and forecasting are crucial for atmosphere pollution control and management. We propose an innovative data-driven framework for air quality index (AQI) prediction by integrating GNSS radio occultation (GNSS-RO) observation and weather modeling. Empowered by the state-of-the-art machine learning approach, our method can effectively predict regional AQI with a comparable accuracy much more quickly than the traditional numerical modeling and simulation approach. In a real case study using a representative region of China, our data-driven approach achieves a 2000 times speedup; meanwhile, the prediction error measured by rRMSE is only 2.4%. We investigate further the effects of different models, hyperparameters, and meteorological factors on the performance of our AQI prediction framework, and reveal that wind field and atmospheric boundary-layer height are important influencing factors of AQI. This paper showcases a direct application of GNSS-RO observation in assisting in forecasting regional AQI. From a machine learning point of view, it provides a new way to leverage the unique merits of GNSS atmospheric remote sensing technology with the help of the more traditional weather forecasting modeling approach. Through analyzing the triggering factors and activity characteristics of avalanches in Aerxiangou in the Western Tianshan Mountains, the formation and disaster-causing process of avalanches were studied to provide theoretical support and a scientific basis for avalanche disaster prevention. In this paper, based on remote sensing interpretation and field investigation, a spatial distribution map of avalanches was established, and the induced and triggering factors in disaster-prone environments were analyzed using the certainty factor model. The degree of influence (E) of the disaster-causing factors on avalanche triggering was quantified, and the main control conditions conducive to avalanche occurrence in different periods were obtained. The RAMMS-avalanche model was used to analyze the activity characteristics at points where multiple avalanches occurred. Research results: (1) The E values of the average temperature, average snowfall, and surface roughness in February were significantly higher than those of other hazard-causing factors, reaching 1.83 and 1.71, respectively, indicating strong control. The E values of the surface cutting degree, average temperature, and average snow depth in March were all higher than 1.8, indicating that these control factors were more prominent than the other factors. In contrast, there were four hazard-causing factors with E values higher than 1.5 in April: the mean temperature, slope, surface roughness, and mean wind speed, with clear control. (2) Under the influence of the different hazard-causing factors, the types of avalanches from February–April mainly included new full-layer avalanches, surface avalanches, and full-layer wet avalanches. (3) In the RAMMS-avalanche simulation test, considering the deposition effect, compared to the previous avalanche movement path, the secondary avalanche flow accumulation area impact range changes were slight, while the movement area within the avalanche path changes was large, as were the different categories of avalanches and their different movement characteristic values. Overall, wet snow avalanches are more hazardous, and the impact force is larger. The new snow avalanches start in a short period, the sliding rate is fast, and the avalanche sliding surface (full-snow surface and face-snow) of the difference is mainly manifested in the differences in the value of the flow height. PM2.5 is the key reason for the frequent occurrence of smog; therefore, identifying its key driving factors has far-reaching significance for the prevention and control of air pollution. Based on long-term remote sensing inversion of PM2.5 data, 21 driving factors in the fields of nature and humanities were selected, and the random forest model was applied to study the influencing factors of PM2.5 concentration in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei urban agglomeration (BTH) from 2000 to 2016. The results indicate: (1) The main factors affecting PM2.5 concentration not only include natural factors such as sunshine hours (SSH), relative humidity (RHU), elevation (ELE), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), wind speed (WIN), average temperature (TEM), daily temperature range (TEMR), and precipitation (PRE), but also human factors such as urbanization rate (URB), total investment in fixed assets (INV), and the number of employees in the secondary industry (INDU); (2) The concentration of PM2.5 changed into an inverted S-shape with the increase in SSH and WIN, and into an S-shape with the increase in RHU, NDVI, TEM, PRS, URB and INV. As for ELE and TEMR, it fluctuated and decreased with the increase in ELE, while it increased and then decreased with the increase in TEMR. However, its change was less pronounced with the increase in PRE and INDU; (3) The influence of natural factors is higher than that of human factors, but the role of human factors has been continuously strengthened in recent years. Amidst global climate change and unsustainable human exploitation of water resources, water has emerged as a critical factor constraining global agricultural food production and ecological environments. Particularly in agricultural powerhouses like China, irrigation water accounts for a significant portion of freshwater resource utilization. However, the inefficiency of irrigation water usage has become a weak link in water resource management. To better assess irrigation water efficiency, an accurate estimation of regional irrigated areas is urgently needed. This study proposes a method for identifying actual irrigated areas based on remote sensing-derived evapotranspiration (ET) to address the challenge of accurately interpreting irrigated areas in tropical regions. Using Yunnan Province's Yuanmou irrigation district as a case study, this research combined ground monitoring data and remote sensing data to identify actual irrigated areas through ET inversion and downscaling methods using the Penman–Monteith–Leuning (PML) model. In 2023, the total irrigated area interpreted from remote sensing in the study area was approximately 15,000 hm2, with a comparison against validation points revealing an extraction error of 16%. The small error indicates that this method can effectively enhance the reliability of monitoring actual irrigated areas, thus providing valuable data support for agricultural irrigation water management. Poyang Lake is the largest freshwater lake in China and forms an essential component of the hydrological, nutrient, and carbon cycles, providing various ecosystem services to the local environment. Since changes in Poyang Lake's water temperature can significantly affect the surrounding environment and social development, continuous monitoring of lake temperature changes is required. Traditional water monitoring methods are resource intensive and cannot simultaneously conduct extensive water monitoring. Remote sensing of temperature inversion has the advantages of all-weather, efficient, and large-scale real-time monitoring. Six Landsat 8 images from August to October in 2020 and 2021 were utilized to extract lake surface temperature (LST), and the variations in LST over the two years were analyzed to determine the impact of global climate anomalies on inland lakes. The results indicate that the LST in August and October 2021 was significantly higher than that in the same periods of the previous year, and the temperature difference in October reached 8 °C. In contrast to the overall normal distribution pattern of the water temperature in 2020, 2021 exhibited a relatively concentrated, unimodal distribution pattern. A trend analysis of the driving factors suggests that the LST of Poyang Lake is influenced by the global climate, and the artificial heat sources around the lake clearly alter the distribution characteristics of the LST simultaneously. This paper reveals a study on air pollution process over North China, applying remote sensing technology, using satellite observation and in situ measurements during the twenty-first Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, which was held in Beijing between 6 and 12 November when the clear weather was called "APEC-Blue". In the meantime, pollutants concentrations including PM2.5 and PM10 in Beijing were lower than 100 μg/m3 owing to the effective government measures and policies, as well as meteorological conditions. High aerosol loading (AOD > 1) was observed over south of Beijing and vertical observations showed that the pollutants were prominent near the land surface. Different from the meeting period, high pollutants concentrations with explosive growth (the values of PM2.5 and PM10 peaking at 291 μg/m3 and 360 μg/m3 respectively) appeared over Beijing after the meeting period, accompanied by strong temperature inversion and high Relative Humidity (RH) values. The pollution particles transferred from Beijing area to south part of North China. Otherwise, fine-mode particles with strong absorption characteristic (UVAI > 1.5, AOD > 1) covered the Beijing sky in the meantime, indicating the existence of black carbon aerosols. In recent years, the concentration of surface ozone (O3) has increased in China. The formation regime of ozone is closely related to the ratio of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to nitrogen oxides (NOx). To explain this increase in ozone, we determined the sensitivity of ozone generation by determining the regional threshold of the ratio of formaldehyde to nitrogen dioxide (HCHO/NO2) in the satellite troposphere. The different FNR(HCHO/NO2) ratio ranges indicate three formation regimes: VOC limited, transitional, and NOx limited. Polynomial fitting models were used to determine the threshold range for the transitional regime in the BTH region (2.0, 3.1). The ozone formation regime in the BTH (Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei) region mainly exhibited a transitional and NOx-limited regime. VOC-limited regimes are mainly distributed in urban agglomeration areas, transitional regimes are mainly concentrated in urban expansion areas, and non-urban areas are mainly controlled by NOx. The concentrations of HCHO and NO2 in the BTH region showed a trend of urban agglomeration areas > urban expansion areas > non-urban areas in different land types from 2019 to 2022, whereas the FNR showed an opposite trend. Using the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science (WoS) databases, 487 articles that used remote sensing methods to study the intensity of surface urban heat islands (SUHIs) over the past 20 years were obtained using keyword searches. A multidimensional analysis was conducted on these articles from the perspectives of the research methods used, spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the research area, research development trends, and main challenges. The research found that (1) the growth trend of the various SUHI research methods over the years was similar to the overall trend in the number of publications, which has rapidly increased since 2009. (2) Among the SUHI research methods, temperature dichotomy is the most widely used worldwide; however, defining urban and rural areas is a main challenge. The Gaussian surface and local climate zoning methods have gradually emerged in recent years; however, owing to the limitations of the different urban development levels and scales, these methods require further improvement. With the rapid urbanization and industrialization of the past few decades, environmental issues have become increasingly prominent, and air pollution in the form of PM2.5 has become a major concern in China. The Chinese government has recognized the severity of these environmental challenges and has placed great emphasis on protecting the environment while promoting economic growth. This study utilizes remote sensing technology to analyze the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of the decoupling between land-use intensity and PM2.5 in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) using 2000–2021 series of PM2.5 and land-use-change data, with the Mean Center Change analysis and the Tapio Decoupling Model. This study attempts to analyze the causes of change from the perspectives of economic development stage and policy execution. The study found that the average PM2.5 level decreased by 11.77 μg/m3 during this period, with high levels concentrated in urban areas and low levels found in less developed regions. The central trajectory of the land-use intensity shifted southeast, indicating a consistent trend in urbanization and industrialization in that direction. Meanwhile, the average land-use intensity value increased by 0.19, with the highest values concentrated in urban areas. A total of 71.12% of the regions in the YREB exhibited strong negative decoupling or negative decoupling between land-use intensity and PM2.5 levels, suggesting rapid urbanization and industrialization with a decrease in PM2.5 levels. A directional polarimetric camera (DPC) is a key payload on board China's Gaofen 5B (hereafter denoted as GF-5B) satellite, a hyperspectral observation instrument for monitoring aerosols. On the basis of the dark dense vegetation (DDV) algorithm, this study applied DDV algorithm to DPC measurements. First, the reflectance of vegetation in three channels (0.443, 0.49, and 0.675 μm) was analyzed, and inversion channels were identified. Subsequently, the decrease in normalized difference vegetation index associated with various view angles was simulated, and the optimal view angle for extracting dark pixels was determined. Finally, the top-of-atmosphere reflectance at different view angles was simulated to determine the optimal view angle for aerosol inversion. The inversion experiments were conducted by using DPC data collected over North China from November 2021 to January 2022. The results revealed that DDV algorithm could monitor pollution from 30 December 2021 to 4 January 2022, and the inversion results were strongly correlated with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol product and AERONET station data (R > 0.85). Dust storms are of great importance to climate change, air quality, and human health. In this study, a complete application frame of integrating hybrid methods based on multi-source data is proposed for remote sensing monitoring and process analysis of dust storms. In the frame, horizontal spatial distribution of dust intensity can be mapped by optical remote sensing products such as aerosol optical depth (AOD) from MODIS; the vertical spatial distribution of dust intensity by LIDAR satellite remote sensing products such as AOD profile from CALIPSO; geostationary satellite remote sensing products such as Chinese Fengyun or Japanese Himawari can achieve high-frequency temporal distribution information of dust storms. More detailed process analysis of dust storms includes air quality analysis supported by particulate matter (PM) data from ground stations and the dust emission trace and transport pathways from HYSPLIT back trajectory driven by meteorological data from the Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS). The dust storm outbreak condition of the source location can be proved by precipitation data from the WMO and soil moisture data from remote sensing products, which can be used to verify the deduced emission trace from HYSPLIT. The proposed application frame of integrating hybrid methods was applied to monitor and analyze a very heavy dust storm that occurred in northern China from 14–18 March 2021, which was one of the most severe dust storms in recent decades. Results showed that the dust storm event could be well monitored and analyzed dynamically. It was found that the dust originated in western Mongolia and northwestern China and was then transmitted along the northwest–southeast direction, consequently affected the air quality of most cities of northern China. Rapid urbanization and industrialization lead to severe air pollution in China, threatening public health. However, it is challenging to understand the pollutants' spatial distributions by relying on a network of ground-based monitoring instruments, considering the incomplete dataset. To predict the spatial distribution of fine-mode particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution near the surface, we established models based on the back propagation (BP) neural network for PM2.5 mass concentration in North China using remote sensing products. According to our predictions, PM2.5 mass concentrations are affected by changes in surface reflectance and the dominant particle size for different seasons. The PM2.5 mass concentration predicted by the seasonal model shows a similar spatial pattern (high in the east but low in the west) influenced by the terrain, but shows high value in winter and low in summer. Compared to the ground-based data, our predictions agree with the spatial distribution of PM2.5 mass concentrations, with a mean bias of +17% in the North China Plain in 2017. Furthermore, the correlation coefficients (R) of the four seasons' instantaneous measurements are always above 0.7, indicating that the seasonal models primarily improve the PM2.5 mass concentration prediction. Featuring unique tropical land–sea contrast and mesoscale terrain, Hainan Island in China is endowed with active mesoscale convections of special regional characteristics. Persistent extreme precipitation events (PEPs) during the post-flood season, triggered by multi-scale interactions among mid-latitude and tropical weather systems, exhibit notable mesoscale features, long duration and high rainfall rates with low forecasting performance. This study is motivated by a failure to forecast a PEP in two stages with distinct characteristics and predictabilities, in the post-flood season over Hainan Island on 16–18 October 2020. Based on multiple sources of remote sensing and high-resolution rain gauge records, detailed observational analyses were conducted using a flow decomposition method. Water vapor divergence (WVD) and its three components were used to investigate the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of two stages with distinct characteristics and predictabilities during this PEP. Decomposed moisture components can be used to determine how and to what extent large- and sub-synoptic scale moisture convergence contributes to PEPs in the tropics, under similar synoptic backgrounds. Joint applications of multiple sources of remote sensing data and flow decomposed WVD are proposed to further assist predicting PEPs in terms of rainfall location and evolution. As the second most abundant greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide (CO2), methane not only plays an important role in global and regional photochemical reactions, but also has an important impact on energy balance and climate change. To explore the long-term trends and spatiotemporal variation of methane concentration over China, we verified the accuracy of the column-averaged, dry air-mixing ratio of CH4 (abbreviated as XCH4 hereafter) merged by SCIAMACHY and GOSAT products, utilizing the data of six surface observation stations in China and the surrounding areas. The root mean square error (RMSE) was mostly less than 2.5%, and the correlation coefficients (r) were 0.77, 0.84, 0.66, 0.42, 0.62 and 0.75. Furthermore, we analyzed the temporal and spatial variation patterns of the XCH4 concentration over China from 2003 to 2020. The results showed that the XCH4 concentration had an increasing trend over China from 2003 to 2020; the average growth rate was 6.64 ppb·a−1, and the value range of the increase rate was from 4.66 ppb·a−1 to 8.46 ppb·a−1. The lowest XCH4 concentration was located over Tibet (1764.03 ppb), and the high values were located in the Sichuan Basin, Central China (Hunan, Hubei, and Henan) and East China (Anhui and Jiangxi) (1825–1845 ppb). The XCH4 concentration was higher in autumn and summer, low in winter and spring, and had obvious seasonal variations. The concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) has increased rapidly worldwide, aggravating the global greenhouse effect, and coal-fired power plants are one of the biggest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions in China. However, efficient methods that can quantify CO2 emissions from individual coal-fired power plants with high accuracy are needed. In this study, we estimated the CO2 emissions of large-scale coal-fired power plants using Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) satellite data based on remote sensing inversions and bottom-up methods. First, we mapped the distribution of coal-fired power plants, displaying the total installed capacity, and identified two appropriate targets, the Waigaoqiao and Qinbei power plants in Shanghai and Henan, respectively. Then, an improved Gaussian plume model method was applied for CO2 emission estimations, with input parameters including the geographic coordinates of point sources, wind vectors from the atmospheric reanalysis of the global climate, and OCO-2 observations. The application of the Gaussian model was improved by using wind data with higher temporal and spatial resolutions, employing the physically based unit conversion method, and interpolating OCO-2 observations into different resolutions. Consequently, CO2 emissions were estimated to be 23.06 ± 2.82 (95% CI) Mt/yr using the Gaussian model and 16.28 Mt/yr using the bottom-up method for the Waigaoqiao Power Plant, and 14.58 ± 3.37 (95% CI) and 14.08 Mt/yr for the Qinbei Power Plant, respectively. These estimates were compared with three standard databases for validation: the Carbon Monitoring for Action database, the China coal-fired Power Plant Emissions Database, and the Carbon Brief database. The comparison found that previous emission inventories spanning different time frames might have overestimated the CO2 emissions of one of two Chinese power plants on the two days that the measurements were made. Our study contributes to quantifying CO2 emissions from point sources and helps in advancing satellite-based monitoring techniques of emission sources in the future; this helps in reducing errors due to human intervention in bottom-up statistical methods. Measurements of the atmospheric concentration of polluting atomic mercury were performed using the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) technique in the Lintong district, about 35 km northeast of Xi'an, the capital of the Shaanxi province, China. Concentrations ranging from 2 to 13 ng/m3 were observed. As uniquely enabled by the lidar technique, representative average concentrations, integrated over a considerable volume, were recorded and put in relation to weather conditions, and vertical concentration profiles were measured. The estimation of cropland evapotranspiration (ET) is essential for agriculture water management, drought monitoring, and yield forecast. Remote sensing-based multi-source ET models have been widely applied and validated in the semi-arid region of China. However, careful investigation of the models' performances for different crop types (winter wheat and summer maize) over the semi-humid region is still necessary. This study used remote sensing data (Landsat 8 and ASTER) and compared three mainstream multi-source ET models: (i) the two-source energy balance model, i.e., TSEB; (ii) the Penman-Monteith based four-source model, i.e., 4s-PM; (iii) the Priestley Taylor-Jet Propulsion Laboratory ET algorithm, i.e., PT-JPL. The measurements of the eddy-covariance (EC) flux tower located in Guantao county of North China were used to validate the models. The results showed that the TSEB model performed the best in estimating latent heat flux (LE) of maize, with an RMSE of 75.0 W/m2 and an R2 of 0.9, and the 4s-PM model had the highest accuracy of LE estimation for wheat, with an RMSE of 61.0 W/m2 and an R2 of 0.91. The LE spatial distribution comparison indicated that the PT-JPL model had more capacity to exhibit crop ET heterogeneity. The major environmental factors affecting ET varied with crop types and crop growth stages. Without taking soil moisture into account, the 4s-PM and TSEB models overestimated LE under water deficit in the maturation stage of wheat. The plant moisture stress based on vegetation index in the PT-JPL model underestimated the evaporation in the maturation stage while the cropland was still wet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, Aqua-Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Collection (C6) and C6.1 Dark Target aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals at 3 km (DT3K) and 10 km (DT10K), Deep Blue AOD retrievals at 10 km (DB10K), and combined DT and DB (DTB) AOD retrievals at 10 km resolutions were validated from 2002 to 2014 against ground-based sunphotometer AOD measurements obtained from the Chinese aerosol remote sensing network (CARSNET). The CARSNET AOD data were obtained for sites at Mt. Waliguan (MW), Lanzhou (LZ), Ulate (UL), and Zhengzhou (ZZ) located in the Yellow River basin (YERB) region, China. Errors and agreement between satellite and ground data were reported using Pearson's correlation (R) and relative mean bias (RMB). Results showed that the DT3K C6.1 highest quality flag (QF = 3) AOD retrievals were well correlated with the sunphotometer AOD data, with an R of 0.82 and an RMB of 1.01. Overestimation and underestimation in DT AOD retrievals were observed for AOD > 1.1 and AOD < 1.1, respectively. A significant underestimation of 37% in DB10K AOD retrievals was observed across all the sites except ZZ, which was indicated by a low-value RMB (0.63). Spatial distribution maps showed high AOD values (>0.8) over the lower part of the YERB and low AOD values (<0.4) across the upstream part of the YERB. This might be due to a large number of aerosol emissions over the lower developed areas and a scarcity of aerosols over the upstream mountain areas. Overall, this study supports the use of DT10K C6.1 AOD retrievals over the western semi-arid and arid regions of the YERB and DTB10K AOD retrievals over the north-central water system and eastern plain regions of the YERB.
