In recent decades, glaciers in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (SETP) have been rapidly melting and showing a large scale of glacier mass loss. Due to the lack of large-scale, high-resolution, and high-precision observations, knowledge on the spatial distribution of the glacier mass balance and the response to climate change is limited in this region. We propose a TanDEM-X bi-static InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) algorithm with a non-local mean filter method and difference strategy, to improve the precision of glacier surface elevation change detection. Moreover, we improved the glacier mass balance estimation algorithm with a correction method for multi-source system errors and an uncertainty evaluation method based on error propagation theory to reduce the uncertainty of estimations. We used 13 pairs of TanDEM-X bi-static InSAR images to obtain the glacier mass balance data for the entire SETP. The total area of glaciers monitored was 5821 km2 and the total number of glaciers monitored was 2321; the glacier surface elevation change rate was −0.505 ± 0.005 m/yr, and the glacier mass balance estimation was −454.5 ± 13.1 mm w.eq. during 2000–2014. Additionally, we analyzed the spatial distribution of the glacier mass balance within the SETP using the sub-watershed analysis method. The results showed that the mass loss rate had a decreasing trend from the southeast to the northwest. Furthermore, the temperature change and the glacier mass loss rate showed a positive correlation from the southeast to the northwest in this region. This study greatly advances our understanding of the regularities of glacier dynamics in this region, and can provide scientific support for major national goals such as the rational utilization of surrounding water resources and construction of important transportation projects. The impact of unique terrain on the microphysics of nighttime precipitation on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has not been fully appreciated, due to a lack of observation. In this study, we used three raindrop spectrometers deployed in the northeastern TP to analyze the characteristics of the raindrop spectrum during two types of summer precipitation. These two types are classified according to their occurrence times: one starting in the daytime and lasting into the night (DP), while the other started at night and continuing into the daytime (NP). The results show that precipitation with a rain rate ranging from 1.0 to 5.0 mm h−1 contributes the most to the total precipitation, with this contribution rate being higher in the NP than in the DP. All the raindrop spectra follow a single-peak distribution pattern, and the logarithm of the generalized intercept parameter (lgNw) rises with the rain rate. The spectral widths of the DP-n (the nighttime part of the DP) are broader than those of the DP-d (the daytime part of the DP). Moreover, the average l g N w and mass-weighted mean diameter ( D m ) over the northeastern TP were 2.65 mm−1 mm−3 and 1.04 mm, respectively, both of which are smaller than their equivalents in the plains. In addition, the gamma distribution can better fit the raindrop size distributions of the two types of precipitation. It is found that precipitation is more likely to occur over the TP at night. The characteristics of NP are reflected in two aspects. First, the sample size of the precipitation at the rain rate of 1.0–5.0 mm h−1 is higher in the NP-n (the nighttime part of the NP), and the precipitation at this rain rate contributes the most to the total precipitation. Based on the data from the Chinese national ground-based (LFEDA: Low-frequency E-field Detection Array) and satellite-based lightning-detection systems (LMI: Lightning Mapping Imager), the spatial and temporal distribution statistical properties of all types of lightning over the Tibetan Plateau in the summer of 2022 and 2023 are analyzed, and were compared with those in Hainan, which are under quite different geographical conditions. The discrepancy between ground-based and space-borne lightning detection was also discussed. The main results show the following: (1) the characteristics of lightning activities over the Tibetan Plateau based on multi-source data: Most of the high-value lightning areas were located in the transition zone between lower and higher terrain; the diurnal variation of lightning activity was significant, and the most active period concentrated around 15:00 LST (Local Standard Time, the same below). In addition, lightning activities were significantly increased at 21:00 and 0:00, which was related to the unique topography and night rain phenomenon of the plateau. In terms of lightning types, the number of IC (Intra-Cloud) lightning was more than that of CG (Cloud-to-Ground). The study of IC changes is of great significance to the early warning of the plateau DCSs. The spatial distribution of IC at different altitudes was quite different. (2) Comparison of lightning activities between the Tibetan Plateau and Hainan: The hourly variation of lightning activities in Nagqu showed a single peak, while that in Hainan was characterized by a primary peak and a secondary peak, affected by the enhancement of the boundary stream in the low latitude and altitude area of China. At the peak of convection, the lightning activities in Nagqu were less than 1/3 of that in Hainan. However, the duration of high-frequency lightning activities in Nagqu (15–19:00) was about 2 h longer than that in Hainan (15–17:00), which may be related to the fact that the Tibetan Plateau is located in the west of China, where the sunset is later, and solar radiation and convective activities last longer. (3) Analysis of features of LMI: LMI has more advantages in IC detection; LMI has higher detection efficiency for the lightning in the range of 4–6 KM altitude, which is partly related to the stronger convective process and the higher proportion of IC. This work will provide deeper understanding of the characteristics of all types of lightning over the Tibetan Plateau, to reveal the indication significance of lightning for DCSs, and help to promote the development of Chinese satellite-based lightning-detection technology, the optimization of subsequent instruments and the fusion application of ground-based and satellite-based lightning data. Due to the scarcity of meteorological stations on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), owing to the high altitude and harsh climate, studies often resort to satellite, reanalysis, and merged multi-source precipitation data. This necessitates an evaluation of TP precipitation data applicability. Here, we assess the following three high-resolution gridded precipitation datasets: the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD), the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis V5-Land (ERA5-Land), and Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) during TP summers. Using observations from the original 133 China Meteorological Administration stations on the TP as a reference, the evaluation yielded the following conclusions: (1) In summer, from 2000 to 2018, discrepancies among the datasets were largest in the western TP. The CMFD showed the smallest deviation from the observations, and the annual summer precipitation was only overestimated by 12.3 mm. ERA5-Land had the closest trend (0.41 mm/y) to the annual mean summer precipitation, whereas it overestimated the highest precipitation (>150 mm). (2) The reliability of the three datasets at annual and monthly scales was in the following order: CMFD, ERA5-Land, and IMERG. The daily scales exhibited a lower accuracy than the monthly scales (correlation coefficient CC of 0.51, 0.38, and 0.26, respectively). (3) The CMFD assessments, referencing the 114 new stations post-2016, had a notably lower accuracy and precipitation capture capability at the daily scale (CC and critical success index (CSI) decreased by 0.18 and 0.1, respectively). High-resolution precipitation products have been crucial for hydrology, meteorology, and environmental ecosystems over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). However, these products are usually subject to systematic errors, which may vary with time and topographic conditions. The study evaluated the suitability of four satellite-derived products (GPM IMERG, GSMaP, CMORPH, and PERSIANN-CDR) and four fusion precipitation products (ERA5-Land, CHIRPS, CMFD, and TPHiPr) by comparing with 22 rain gauges at a daily scale from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2018 over the hinterland of the TP. The main findings are as follows: (1) TPHiPr and CMFD are better than the satellite-derived products, while the performance of CHIRPS is worse; (2) among the satellite-derived products, the quality of GPM IMERG is the highest on different time scales, and PERSIANN-CDR is better in the months of June to October, while GSMaP and CMORPH have poor performance; (3) the eight precipitation products have weaker detection capability for heavy precipitation events, and the quality of each product decreases with the increase in the precipitation threshold, while the rate of descent of fusion precipitation products is slower than that of satellite-derived products. This study demonstrates the performance of eight precipitation products over the hinterland of the TP, which is expected to provide valuable information for hydrometeorology applications.
