The iron and steel industry is an important foundation of the national economy. It is the inevitable choice, to achieve high-quality development in the new era of the iron and steel industry, to speed up the green development of the iron and steel industry. This paper studies the effect of steel industry agglomeration on regional economic growth and air pollution. Through the analysis of the characteristics of iron and steel industry agglomeration, and the empirical analysis of the relationship between iron and steel industry agglomeration, regional economic growth, and air pollution, it is found that: (1) Iron and steel industry agglomeration helps to promote economic growth; (2) Iron and steel industry agglomeration has an obvious spatial correlation effect and obviously drives the development of surrounding areas; (3) Iron and steel industry agglomeration will cause air pollution. The marginal effect of air pollution will decline rapidly with the development of iron and steel industry agglomeration. (4) The impact of green process innovation investment on air pollution presents an inverted U-shaped effect, which has a positive effect on air recovery after exceeding the critical point. (5) The air self-purification capacity represented by precipitation, helps to reduce air pollution. Based on the above conclusions, this paper puts forward some policy suggestions, such as making a scientific development plan for the iron and steel industry, accelerating green process innovation, effectively improving regional precipitation and precipitation times, vigorously promoting high-quality development of the regional economy, and comprehensively promoting coordinated development of the iron and steel industry, so as to cope with the dilemma of the coordinated development of the iron and steel industry, regional economic growth, and smog pollution, and strive for international development in the future. This paper proposes a new post-processing method for model data in order to improve typhoon track and rainfall forecasts. The model data used in the article include low-resolution ensemble forecasts and high-resolution forecasts. The entire improvement method contains the following three steps. The first step is to correct the typhoon track forecast: three ensemble member optimization methods are applied to the low-resolution ensemble forecasts, and then the best optimization method is selected with the principle of the smallest average distance error. The results of rainfall forecasts show that the corrected rainfall forecast performs better than the original forecasts. The second step is to derive the high-resolution probability rainfall forecast: the neighborhood method is applied to the deterministic high-resolution rainfall forecast. The last step is to correct the typhoon rainfall forecast: the low- and high-resolution forecasts are blended using the probability-matching method with two different schemes. The results show that the forecasts of the two schemes perform better than the original forecast under all rainfall thresholds and all forecast lead times. In terms of bias score, a rain forecast from one scheme corrects the rainfall deviation from observation better for light and moderate rainfall, whereas a rain forecast from another scheme corrects the rainfall deviation better for heavy and torrential rainfall. The serious and frequent typhoon activities can easily cause extreme precipitation weather in the eastern coastal area of China, which is affected by land and sea differences. To explore the temporal and spatial characteristics of Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) and rainfall during the typhoon period, the data of the conspicuous case named 'Meihua' in 2022 is adopted in analysis. In this paper, firstly, the accuracy of the PWV retrieved by ERA5 was evaluated, which met the experimental analysis requirements, compared with the conference value of the Radiosonde (RS). Secondly, the correlation between PWV, rainfall and the typhoon path were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, using 16 meteorological stations in the typhoon path. The results indicated that PWV reached its peak value 2–6 h than rainfall, which was an important reference for rainfall forecasting. Then, the 'Pearson correlation coefficient' method was used for the quantitative evaluation of the correlation between PWV and the distance of the 'weather station-typhoon'. The results showed that PWV had an obvious upward trend, with a decrease in the distance between the 'weather station-typhoon'. The variation in PWV is intense at a reduced distance, and can reach its peak 16 h before the arrival of the typhoon. A strong negative correlation was demonstrated, with an average value of −0.73 for the Pearson correlation coefficient. Analyzing the temporal and spatial changes of the typhoon track, PWV and rainfall, the results show that before the typhoon passes through the region, both the PWV and rainfall certainly reach their maximum. The variation trends of PWV and rainfall in the period of the typhoon are significantly consistent. Drought has a direct impact on regional agricultural production, ecological environment, and economic development. The northwest region of China is an important agricultural production area, but it is also one of the most serious areas of water shortage due to drought and little rain. It is of great significance to make full use of agricultural resources to clarify the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the drought regime in Northwest China. Based on the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), this paper used the methods of Mann–Kendall non-parameter trend, mutation test, and Morlet wavelet analysis to explore the drought characteristics in Northwest China from 1961 to 2017. The results showed that the spatial distribution of SPEI on annual and seasonal scales differed slightly in different regions, but from northwest to southeast, the distribution was generally wetter to drier. The drought intensity (Sij) had a step-like distribution with a range of 1.14–1.98. Based on Sij analysis, the frequency of drought in Northwest China was moderate, followed by extreme drought, severe drought, and light drought. The inter-annual drought station proportion (Pj) ranged from 7.4% to 84.1%. A total of 25, 18, 7, and 5 years of pan-regional drought, regional drought, partial region drought, and local drought occurred, respectively, based on Pj analysis. Moreover, from the whole study period, the regional drought changes tended to cause humidification to different degrees. The results of Morlet wavelet analysis showed that there were multiple time scales of 33–52, 11–19, and 4–7 years of SPEI in the entire time domain, and dry and wet trends occurred. The results of the present research can provide a reference for the efficient utilization of water resources, drought monitoring and early warning, drought prevention, and drought relief in Northwest China. Typhoon Haikui (2012) occurred in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, and landfall on the east coast of China brought heavy rainfall with strong winds. Because of Typhoon Haikui, sea surface temperature (SST) cooling of 3 °C occurred on the right side of the track, mainly due to Ekman transport and upwelling. SST cooling on the left side was lower than on the right side, mainly due to the rainfall. Heavy precipitation occurred on both sides of the typhoon track; however, rainfall was higher on the left side of the typhoon track. This paper explains the dynamic process between atmospheric and oceanographic parameters and verifies the variations in chlorophyll and sea surface height data before, during, and after the typhoon. Groundwater is a primary freshwater resource for human consumption and an essential source for industry and agriculture. Therefore, understanding its spatial and temporal trends and drivers is crucial for governments to take appropriate measures to manage water resources. This paper uses Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data and the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) to derive groundwater storage anomalies (GWSAs) and to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of GWSA in different regions of China (Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, North China Plain, South China, and Northeast China). It used groundwater-level observation data to verify the accuracy of GWSA estimates and analyzed the drivers of regional GWSA changes. The results showed that: (1) GWSA in South China increased at a rate of 4.79 mm/a from 2003 to 2016, and GWSA in other regions in China showed a decreasing trend. Among them, the decline rates of GWSA in Xinjiang, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, North China Plain, and Northeast China were −6.24 mm/a, −3.33 mm/a, −3.17 mm/a, −7.35 mm/a, and −0.75 mm/a, respectively. (2) The accuracy of the annual-scale GWSA estimates was improved after deducting gravity losses due to raw coal quality, and the correlation coefficient between GWSA and groundwater levels monitored by observation wells increased. (3) In Xinjiang, the annual water consumed by raw coal mining, industrial, and agricultural activities had a greater impact on GWSA than rainfall and temperature, so these human activities might be the main drivers of the continued GWSA decline in Xinjiang. Water consumption by raw coal mining and industry might be the main drivers of the continued decline in GWSA in Inner Mongolia and the North China Plain. Precipitation data from ground-based observatories in the Dongting Lake basin are often missing, resulting in large errors in surface precipitation data obtained by interpolation, which affects the accuracy of hydro-meteorological studies. Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) is the main high-resolution precipitation product, which is available to supplement measured missing data. To evaluate the applicability of this product in the Dongting Lake basin at multiple spatial and temporal scales, this paper analyzes daily, monthly, seasonal, annual, and extreme precipitation events of the three latest IMERG precipitation products (IPPs) (IMERG-F, IMERG-E, and IMERG-L) using eight statistical evaluation metrics. We find that the spatial and temporal performance of IMERG precipitation products varies over different time scales and topographic conditions. However, all three metrics (CC, RMSE, and RB) of the IMERG-F precipitation products outperform the IMERG-E and IMERG-L precipitation products for the same period. In the comparison of IMERG and TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) precipitation products on monthly and seasonal scales, IMERG-F performed the best. IPPs can capture precipitation more accurately on seasonal scales and perform better in winter, indicating good detection of trace precipitation. Both high and low altitudes are not favorable for the satellite detection of extreme precipitation in both general and extreme precipitation events. Overall, the accuracy of IMERG-F with correction delay is slightly better than that of IMERG-E and IMERG-L without correction under near-real-time conditions, which is applicable in the Dongting Lake basin. This study investigates the characteristics of the raindrop size distribution (DSD) for five typhoons that made landfall or passed by Zhejiang on the eastern coast of China, from 2019 to 2022. Additionally, it examines the raindrop shape–slope (µ-Λ) relationship, as well as the local Z-R relationship for these typhoons. The DSD datasets were collected by the DSG1 disdrometer located in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. Based on rainfall rate (R), the DSD can be categorized into convective and stratiform rainfall types. Some rainfall parameters can also be derived from the DSDs to further analyze the specific characteristics of rainfall. The histograms of the generalized intercept parameter (log10Nw) exhibit negative skewness in both convective and stratiform rainfall, whereas the histograms of the mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm) of raindrops display positive skewness. During typhoon periods on the eastern coast of China, the DSD characteristic was composed of a lower number concentration of small and midsize raindrops (3.42 for log10Nw, 1.43 mm for Dm in the whole dataset) as compared to Jiangsu in eastern China, Tokyo, in Japan, Miryang, in South Korea, and Thiruvananthapuram in south India, respectively. At the same time, the scatter plots of Dm and log10Nw indicate that the convective rain during typhoon periods exhibits characteristics that are intermediate between "maritime-like" and "continental-like" clusters. Additionally, the raindrop spectra of convective rainfall and midsize raindrops in stratiform rainfall are well-represented by a three-parameter gamma distribution. The µ-Λ relation in this region is similar to Taiwan and Fujian, located along the southeastern coast of China. The Z-R relationship for eastern coastal China during typhoons based on filtered disdrometer data is Z = 175.04R1.53. These results could offer deeper insights into the microphysical characteristics of different rainfall types along the eastern coast of China and potentially improve the accuracy of precipitation estimates from weather radar observations. An X-band dual-polarization radar (XPRAD) was deployed in Guangdong province as part of the Southern China Monsoon Rainfall Experiment (SCMREX) during the storm season in 2016. This paper presents a comprehensive assessment of XPRAD observations during SCMREX with emphasis on data processing and rainfall products. The differential phase-based attenuation correction and radar calibration using self-consistency of dual-polarization observables are presented. It is found that the standard deviation of the Zdr bias is less than 0.2 dB based on 'light rain at low angle' and 'dry aggregate snow' observations. Cross-comparison with two standard S-band China New Generation Weather Radars (CINRAD) shows that the bias of Zh has a mean value less than 1.5 dBZ and a standard deviation less than 0.5 dBZ. In addition, fifteen rainfall events that occurred during the intensive observing period (IOP) are analyzed to demonstrate the rainfall estimation performance of XPRAD. In particular, rainfall accumulations at 1-, 2- and 3-h scales derived using R(Kdp) and R(Zh, Zdr) relations are evaluated using national level rain gauge data and CINRAD-based rainfall estimation. The results show that both R(Kdp)- and R(Zh, Zdr)-based products agree well with the rain gauge observations and CINRAD estimation. On 31 July 2021, Ningbo, an eastern coast city in China, experienced a severe convective rainstorm, characterized by intense short-duration precipitation extremes with a maximum rainfall rate of 130 mm h−1. In this research, we first analyzed this rainstorm using Doppler radar and precipitation observation and then conducted high-resolution simulation for it. A three-dimensional precipitation diagnostic equation is introduced to quantitatively analyze the microphysical processes during the rainstorm. It is shown that this rainstorm was triggered and developed locally in central Ningbo under favorable large-scale quasi-geostrophic conditions and local conditions. In the early stage, the precipitation increase is mainly driven by the strong convergence of water vapor, and a noticeable increase in both the intensity and spatial extent of uplift promotes the upward transportation of water vapor. As the water vapor flux and associated convergence weaken in the later stage, the precipitation reduces accordingly. Cloud microphysical processes are also important in the entire precipitation process. The early stage updraft supports the escalations in raindrops, with the notable fluctuations in raindrop concentrations directly linked to variations in ground precipitation intensity. The behavior of graupel particles is intricately connected to their melting as they fall below the zero-degree layer. Although cloud water and snow exhibit changes during this period, the magnitudes of these adjustments are considerably less pronounced than those in raindrops and graupels, highlighting the differentiated response of various condensates to the convective dynamics. In this study, we investigate the seasonal and diurnal variations in cloud occurrence frequency, as well as cloud vertical structure (CVS) characteristics under different seasons and precipitation intensities over the Guangzhou region in South China, based on the analysis of millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR) and ground automatic weather station rainfall observations from May 2019 to August 2021. The results showed that the occurrence frequency of clouds exhibits a bimodal distribution throughout the year, with peaks in March to June and October, reaching its highest occurrence in May at approximately 80% and its lowest from December to February at around 40%. Additionally, there are distinct diurnal variations in occurrence frequency, with the lowest rates occurring around 0005 LST, rapidly increasing after 0006 LST, and peaking during the afternoon to evening hours. Cloud top height (CTH) shows bimodal distributions during the pre-flood and post-flood seasons. The most frequently occurring range of CTH during the pre-flood season is below 3 km, accounting for approximately 43%, while during the post-flood season, it ranges from 11 to 14 km, constituting about 37%. For precipitation clouds, CTH can extend beyond 12 km, with the radar reflectivity decreasing gradually with increasing height. The highest frequencies of radar echoes are observed below 2 km and between 4 and 7 km, exhibiting clear diurnal variations, with echoes mainly below 2 km and between 4 to 6 km during the early morning, intensifying and shifting to higher altitudes during the day and reaching their maximum below 4 km during the afternoon to nighttime hours, while both the frequency and intensity increase in the height range of 4 to 12 km. Vertical profiles of radar reflectivity and cloud ice/liquid water content (IWC/LWC) exhibit similar trends under different precipitation intensities. The main differences are observed below 4 km, where both radar reflectivity and IWC/LWC generally increase with increasing precipitation intensity. These findings contribute to a better understanding of cloud characteristics in the South China region, enhance the accuracy of model simulations, and provide a scientific basis for accurate forecasting and warning of meteorological disasters. This study focuses on the real-time precipitation forecast products of the GRAPES_MESO regional ensemble forecast model, which is developed by the Numerical Weather Prediction Center of the China Meteorological Administration and is initialized 1–3 days in advance at 12:00 UTC. Using a national-level homogenized precipitation grid dataset from surface meteorological stations as observational data, a frequency matching method (FMM) is employed to correct precipitation forecasts for different precipitation intensity levels, including light rain, moderate rain, heavy rain, and torrential rain. Case studies and statistical tests (TS scores) are conducted to compare the forecast performance before and after correction. The results indicate that the model's Cumulative Distribution Function (CDF) curves deviate from observations, and the longer the lead time, the more significant the error. The correction coefficients (CCs) show an increasing trend with the growth of precipitation intensity, indicating that for larger precipitation amounts and longer lead times, larger CCs are needed, highlighting the necessity of correction. Analyzing two precipitation events in South China in July 2019, the FMM results in an increase in precipitation intensity and a widening of the range of heavy precipitation. The corrected precipitation magnitudes are closer to the observations. The statistical tests using TS scores reveal that the FMM has a certain correction effect on the overall precipitation forecast in the South China region, especially for longer lead times and higher precipitation intensities, where the correction effect is more significant. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) is an important economic region in China. Heavy winter rainfall may pose serious threats to city operations. To ensure the safe operation of the city, meteorological departments need to provide forecast results for the Spring Festival travel rush weather service. Therefore, the extended-range forecast of winter rainfall is of considerable importance. To solve this problem, based on the analysis of low-frequency rainfall and the intra-seasonal oscillation of atmospheric circulation, an extended-range forecast model for winter rainfall is developed using spatiotemporal projection methods and is applied to a case study from 2020. The results show that: (1) The precipitation in the YRD during the winter has a significant intra-seasonal oscillation (ISO) with a periodicity of 10–30 d. (2) The atmospheric circulations associated with winter rainfall in the YRD have a significant characteristic of low-frequency oscillation. From a 30-day to a 0-day lead, large modifications appear in the low-frequency atmospheric circulations at low, mid, and high latitudes. At low latitudes, strong wet convective activity characterized by a negative OLR combined with a positive RH700 correlation coefficient moves northwestward and covers the entire YRD. Meanwhile, the Western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) characterized by a positive Z500 anomaly enhances and lifts northward. At mid and high latitudes, the signal of negatively correlated Z500 northwest of Lake Balkhash propagates southeastward, indicating the cold is air moving southward. Multiple circulation factors combine together and lead to the precipitation process in the YRD. (3) Taking the intra-seasonal dynamical evolution process of the atmospheric circulation as the prediction factor, the spatiotemporal method is used to build the model for winter mean extended-range precipitation anomaly tendency in the YRD. The hindcast for the recent 10 years shows that the ensemble model has a higher skill that can reach up to 20 days. In particular, the skill of the eastern part of the YRD can reach 25 days. This paper evaluated the latest version 6.0 Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) and version 6.0 Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) products during 2018 Typhoon Mangkhut in China. The reference data is the rain gauge datasets from Gauge-Calibrated Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) Morphing Technique (CMORPHGC). The products for comparison include the GSMaP near-real-time, Microwave-IR merged, and gauge-calibrated (GSMaP_NRT, GSMaP_MVK, and GSMaP_Gauge) and the IMERG Early, Final, and Final gauge-calibrated (IMERG_ERUncal, IMERG_FRUncal, and IMERG_FRCal) products. The results show that (1) both GSMaP_Gauge and IMERG_FRCal considerably reduced the bias of their satellite-only products. GSMaP_Gauge outperforms IMERG_FRCal with higher Correlation Coefficient (CC) values of about 0.85, 0.78, and 0.50; lower Fractional Standard Error (FSE) values of about 18.00, 18.85, and 29.30; and Root-Mean-Squared Error (RMSE) values of about 12.12, 33.35, and 32.99 mm in the rainfall centers over mainland China, southern China, and eastern China, respectively. (2) GSMaP products perform better than IMERG products, with higher Probability of Detection (POD) and Critical Success Index (CSI) and lower False Alarm Ratio (FAR) in detecting rainfall occurrence, especially for high rainfall rates. (3) For area-mean rainfall, IMERG performs worse than GSMaP in the rainfall centers over mainland China and southern China but shows better performance in the rainfall center over eastern China. GSMaP_Gauge and IMERG_FRCal perform well in the three regions with a high CC (0.79 vs. 0.94, 0.81 vs. 0.96, and 0.95 vs. 0.97) and a low RMSE (0.04 vs. 0.06, 0.40 vs. 0.59, and 0.19 vs. 0.34 mm). The Dongting Lake basin, located in the middle Yangtze River region, has long been under the threat of climate change. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive analysis and research on the long-term trends and interactions among hydrometeorological factors within the region. To address this gap, this study collected data from 31 meteorological stations in the region and employed statistical analysis methods, including the non-parametric Mann–Kendall test, Sen's slope test, and cross-wavelet analysis. The results revealed significant increases in temperatures, especially in the spring season, while summer, winter, and annual rainfall also exhibited a significant increase. However, spring and autumn rainfall showed a non-significant decrease, and there was a clear decreasing trend in annual streamflow. Interestingly, evaporation demonstrated a significant increasing trend. The annual average temperature and annual runoff exhibited approximately negative correlations in the 6–10-year resonance period and positive correlations in the 4–6-year resonance period. There are significant positive resonance periods in the relationship between annual precipitation and annual runoff within the range of 0–12 years, indicating that precipitation has a substantial impact and serves as the primary source of runoff. Furthermore, there was a transition between "abundance" and "dry" periods in the annual runoff around 4 a, occurring before and after 1973 and 2005. Heavy rainfall and flood disasters are frequent in mountainous watersheds in southwest China, and forecasting runoff floods in some mountainous watersheds is difficult. In this study, a typical watershed in the southwest mountainous region, the Qingyi River (13,000 km2), was selected for the lack of precipitation observation data in the watershed, and the BTOPMC (block-wise use of the topographic-based hydrologic model (TOPMODEL)) was used, using CMPA-Hourly (China Hourly Merged Precipitation Analysis combining observations from automatic weather stations, meteorological satellite, and weather radar at 0.05° × 0.05° grid) to improve the accuracy of flood forecasting. The results show that the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) of the flood forecast for the verification period in the Jiajiang section of the Qingyi River using CMPA-Hourly improved from 0.66 to 0.78, the flood error reduced from 18% to 9%, and the overall accuracy reached grade B or above. The results indicate that CMPA-Hourly, which integrates ground observation–radar–satellite precipitation, effectively combined the advantages of different sources of data to improve the resolution and accuracy of precipitation data, and then CMPA-Hourly can be used to improve the accuracy of runoff and flood forecasting. On 17 July 2019, an unusually intense rainfall occurred in the central-eastern part of Jiangsu Province in China, resulting in a record-breaking daily precipitation of 286.4 mm at the Rugao station, not seen since 1961. A comprehensive analysis was conducted on various multiscale characteristics of the initial rain event, such as the large-scale surroundings, moisture transport, triggering and maintenance mechanisms, and microphysical characteristics. Multi-sources of data were utilized, such as reanalysis data, automatic weather stations, wind-profiling radar, laser-optical Particle Size Velocity instruments, soundings, S-band dual-polarization radar, and a Lagrangian model. The findings suggest that the intense precipitation in Rugao resulted from the convergence of the warm and moist airflow from Typhoon Danas and the cold air moving southward from the north, along with the ample moisture and energy provided by the circulation of Typhoon Danas. Convection, which showed good consistency with the intense precipitation process, was initiated by mesoscale temperature gradients and wind field convergence. This was associated with the intrusion of a near-surface cold pool and the maintenance of a ground convergence line in the Rugao area. This convection exemplified a standard system of warm clouds with high precipitation efficacy. It had a high concentration of raindrops, especially large ones, resulting in record-breaking precipitation in a short amount of time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Practical application has shown that the blown-up theory has great predictive ability for predicting transitional weather systems, especially catastrophic weather systems. This study applies the blown-up theory to analyze and predict a rainstorm case in Jiangsu Province of East China to explore the applicability of the blown-up theory. At the same time, a numerical simulation experiment is conducted using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) v4.2. The numerical results are compared with the European Center for Medium Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) data and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) products. It is found that there is a deviation in the simulation for the precipitation center, and further analysis indicates that it is likely related to the position of the simulated low-level shear line. On the other hand, the blown-up analyses are consistent with the actual situation and provide additional information besides the numerical simulation results. These results indicate that the blown-up charts and V-3θ diagrams are able to predict the weather system transformation, the rainfall area, and the evolution of the rainstorm, which confirms the applicability of the blown-up theory to rainstorm forecasts. To improve understanding of the characteristics of extreme summer rainfall and its water vapor transport in the eastern part of southwestern China (ESWC), this study analyzed data on daily precipitation from 118 meteorological stations in the ESWC from 1979 to 2020, as well as daily reanalysis data from ERA5 and daily reanalysis data from NCEP/NCAR. The study employed polynomial fitting, correlation, regression, clustering, and mixed single-particle Lagrangian trajectory (HYSPLITv5.0) modeling methods to simulate extreme summer precipitation and its water vapor transport characteristics in the ESWC and its possible formation mechanism. The results show that: (1) The contribution rate of extreme precipitation in the ESWC from 1979 to 2020 varied significantly on the interannual time scale. When the number of extreme precipitation days is high (low), the contribution rate of extreme precipitation is also high (low), while the contribution rate of general precipitation (the percentage of the sum of general precipitation to the total summer precipitation of that year) is often low (high). (2) When extreme precipitation occurs in the ESWC, compared with general precipitation, the high-level potential vortices are stronger, and the cold air from higher latitude is more likely to move southward. Meanwhile, the amount of water vapor input to the region is significantly larger than that of general precipitation. (3) There are four channels of water vapor sources in the ESWC during the period of extreme precipitation: the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, the western Pacific, and the northwest. The contribution of water vapor from the Bay of Bengal is the highest. The number of extreme summer precipitation days in the ESWC is significantly negatively correlated with the water vapor budget of the eastern boundary and positively correlated with Indian Ocean Basin-Wide (IOBW) index in the previous winter. (4) When the winter SST is high in the IOBW mode, it can cause the western Pacific subtropical high and the South Asian high to be stronger and shifted southward in summer, resulting in an increase in the number of extreme precipitation days in the ESWC. This study investigates the main climatological features of extreme precipitation (TCER) induced by tropical cyclones (TCs) affecting Guangxi (GX), South China using multiple datasets and a 99th percentile threshold during 1981–2020, with an emphasis on the rainfall diversities of different high-impact TC groups and their associated mechanisms. Results show that there are large regional differences and a seasonal imbalance in the climatological features of TCER in GX. In summer (fall), TCs with TCER events primarily move northward or eastward (northwestward or westward), namely, S-NWTCs and S-ETCs (F-WTCs and F-NWTCs). The rainfall centers exhibit asymmetrical features with S-NWTCs and F-NWTCs located in the northeast quadrant, but S-ETCs and F-WTCs in the southwest and northeast quadrants, respectively. Comparisons of atmospheric circulations and environmental factors indicate that the intense rainfall of F-WTCs is mainly attributed to the trough–TC interaction, which is accompanied by stronger upper-level westerly jet and cold air intrusion, thus increasing baroclinic energy and uplifting for the strongest rainfall among these four groups. This interaction is absent for other groups due to a greater South Asian high and western North Pacific subtropical high. Instead, the increased rainfall in S-NWTCs and F-NWTCs can mainly be attributed to the stronger low-level southwesterly jet, which, in combination with low-level warm advection and convergence induced by land–sea friction, promotes the release of latent heat through moisture condensation. Assimilation of high-resolution geostationary satellite data is of great value for precise precipitation prediction in regional basins. The operational geostationary satellite imager carried by the Himawari-8 satellite, Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), has two additional water vapor channels and four other channels compared with its predecessor, MTSAT-2. However, due to the uncertainty in surface parameters, AHI surface-sensitive channels are usually not assimilated over land, except for the three water vapor channels. Previous research showed that the brightness temperature of AHI channel 16 is much more sensitive to the lower-tropospheric temperature than to surface emissivity, which is similar to the three water vapor channels 8–10. As a follow-up work, this paper evaluates the effectiveness of assimilating brightness temperature observations over land from both the three AHI water vapor channels and channel 16 to improve watershed precipitation forecasting through both case analysis (in the Haihe River basin, China) and batch tests. It is found that assimilating AHI channel 16 can improve the upstream near-surface atmospheric temperature forecast, which in turn affects the development of downstream weather systems. The precipitation forecasting test results indicate that adding the terrestrial observations of channel 16 to the assimilation of AHI data can improve short-term precipitation forecasting in the basin. Our previous study revealed the link between Barents–Kara sea ice and rainfall in eastern China. This study continues evaluating the performance of multiple models from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) in simulating this linkage. Most CMIP6 models can simulate Arctic sea ice coverage in the present climate system, although the sea ice extent in the edge areas show some biases. Only a few models can roughly reproduce the observed rainfall dipole pattern associated with Arctic sea ice variability. The linkage between Arctic sea ice variability in winter and eastern China rainfall in early summer is performed through a long memory of the sea ice, the stratospheric variability as the mediator, and downward propagation of stratospheric signals. Very few CMIP6 models can exhibit a realistic interannual relationship between the Arctic sea ice and China rainfall. The selected high-skill models with a more realistic linkage between sea ice and China rainfall present a clear downward impact of the stratospheric circulation anomalies associated with sea ice variability. The reversal of the Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode (NAM) from the negative phase in early winter to the positive phase in spring in the high-skill models and observations denotes the important role of the stratosphere as a mediator to bridge the Arctic sea ice and China rainfall. Polarimetric radar data are an important tool for quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE), which is essential for monitoring and forecasting precipitation. Previous studies have shown that the drop size distribution (DSD) and polarimetric radar parameters of typhoon-induced precipitation differ significantly from those of other types of rainfall. South China is a region that frequently experiences typhoons and heavy rainfall, which can cause serious disasters. Therefore, it is critical to develop a QPE algorithm that is suitable for typhoon precipitation over South China. In this study, we constructed four simple QPE estimators, R(ZH), R(ZH, ZDR), R(KDP) and R(KDP, ZDR) based on two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) DSD observations of typhoon-induced precipitation over South China in 2017–2018. We analyzed the DSD characteristics and the estimation accuracy of these four QPE estimators in the reflectivity–differential reflectivity (ZH–ZDR) space, as well as the S-band polarimetric radar (S-POL) data of seven typhoon-induced precipitation events that affected South China in 2017–2019. We used these data to quantitatively determine the optimal ranges of the estimators and establish a typhoon precipitation QPE algorithm for typhoon-induced precipitation over South China (2DVD-Typhoon). The evaluation results showed that: (1) compared to R(ZH) and R(KDP), R(ZH, ZDR) and R(KDP, ZDR) had lower performance in estimating typhoon-induced rainfall after incorporating the polarimetric parameter ZDR, as strong crosswind of the typhoon caused some bias in the raindrop-induced ZDR; (2) the 2DVD-Typhoon algorithm utilizes the respective advantages of the individual estimators to generate the best QPE results; (3) the QPE performance of 2DVD-Typhoon and the Colorado State University–Hydrometeor Identification Rainfall Optimization (CSU-HIDRO) is used as a comparison for hourly rainfall, cumulative rainfall and different rainfall intensity. The comparison shows that 2DVD-Typhoon gives a better normalized error (NE), root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (CC), indicating its strength in rainfall estimation for typhoons over South China. Multisource meteorological precipitation products are an important way to make up for a lack of observation sites or a lack of precipitation data in areas with a complex topography. They have important value for local industrial, agricultural, and ecological water use calculations, as well as for water resource evaluation and management. The Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau is located in southwest China and has a relatively backward economy and few meteorological stations. At the same time, the terrain is dominated by mountain valleys, precipitation is greatly affected by the terrain, and meteorological data are lacking, making the calculation of local water resources difficult. In this study, the applicability of the 3-hourly merged high-quality/IR estimates (3B42) of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD), and China Meteorological Assimilation Driving Datasets (CMADS) in the Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau was analyzed using multiple evaluation indicators of different temporal scales and precipitation intensity levels as well as the spatial distribution of the indicators based on measured daily precipitation data from 59 national meteorological basic stations in the study area in 2008–2018. The results showed that (1) the three products had performed well and could be applied to the calculation of local water resources with CMFD performing the best; (2) the performance of precipitation products was slightly worse on the daily scale, and the overall performance of the yearly, quarterly, and monthly scales was better; (3) good results were achieved in most regions, but there were also some regions with prominent overestimation and underestimation; (4) the three precipitation products had the highest probabilities of detection and the lowest false alarm rates for no rain and light rain, and the probability of detection gradually decreased with an increase in the precipitation intensity; and (5) the mean absolute error of precipitation products in rainy months is large, so the accuracy of products in the calculation of heavy rain and flood will be limited. Meiyu-front rainstorm is one of the main disastrous weather events in summer in East China. In this study, seven assimilation experiments of multi-type observation data such as wind profile data, microwave radiometer data and radiosonde sounding data are designed to forecast the Meiyu-front rainstorm on 15 June 2020. The results show that the seven experiments can basically simulate the orientation of rain belt. The comprehensive experiment which assimilates all types of observations performs the best in simulating the location of heavy rainstorm and shows good performance in simulating the precipitation above moderate rain. For the comprehensive experiment, the forecast deviation of rainstorm and heavy rainstorm is small, and the equitable threat score has also been greatly improved compared with other experiments. It is found that the convective available potential energy is enhanced after the assimilation of surface observation data. In addition, the wind convergence and water vapor transportation are modified after assimilating wind profile data. Accordingly, the precipitation efficiency is improved in the comprehensive experiment. The profiles of pseudo-equivalent potential temperature, vorticity and divergence show that, the assimilation of new-types observation data from wind profiler radar and microwave radiometer increases the instability of atmospheric stratification and enhances the ascending motion in the heavy precipitation center. The above results show that the introduction of various some new-type data before the numerical simulation can reduce the forecast deviation. In addition, the combined assimilation of microwave radiometer and sounding data presents better performance than single data assimilation, which indicates that data mutual complementation is essential to improving forecast accuracy. The Qinling Mountains (QMs) are considered to be the division in geology, geochemistry, and physical geography between northern China and southern China. They have crucial effects on regional climate, especially on rainfall and temperature, and have shown great scientific relevance to climate change research in China. Using the observational daily and monthly rainfall and temperature data derived from meteorological and regional automatic stations—as well as the methods of correlation analysis, climate trend analysis, and Mann–Kendal and t tests—we revealed the spatiotemporal change characteristics of temperature and rainfall and their correlation with elevation, longitude, and latitude. The results show that the annual mean temperature (AMT) underwent a significant increasing trend in the QMs. The maximum AMT increase occurred in spring, and the minimum occurred in summer. Positive anomalies of annual mean rainfall amount (AMRA) occurred in the 1960s, 1980s, and 2010s, and negative anomalies occurred in the 1970s, 1990s, and 2000s. In the QMs, the amount of moderate rainfall (MR) occupied the maximum proportion and accounted for 27.9% of the AMRA, whereas the torrential rainfall (TR) occupied the minimum proportion and accounted for 12.8%. The AMRA amount significantly decreased by 130.1 mm from the 1980s to the 1990s and accounted for 13.5% of the measure in the 1980s. The AMT and AMRA showed consistent change trends with increases in elevation and latitude and showed the opposite trend as the longitude increased. The results offer a further understanding of the meteorological background of the QMs, helping us in further investigating the potential physical mechanisms that influence the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of temperature and rainfall in the QMs. This study will provide a scientific basis for rainfall and temperature forecasts, with relevance to local ecosystems, agriculture, soil erosion, and the prevention and mitigation of floods in the future. We investigated the relative humidity (RH) vertical distribution characteristics before precipitation using microwave radiometer measurements over southeast China in 2021. The superposed epoch method is used to analyze the profile and vertical statistical characteristics and evolution of RH during precipitation events. There is a shallow, high-humidity area on the ground, with a thickness of about 0.1–0.2 Km, from 12 to 8 h before precipitation. An obvious dry layer appears in the lower layer near the ground 8–0 h before precipitation, with a thickness of about 1 km and humidity of less than 80%, which continues until the appearance of precipitation. The water vapor content in the air begins to accumulate and the humidity increases before the occurrence of LRs, MRs, and HRs, classified by total rainfall. The SDPs, MDPs, and LDPs, which are classified by precipitation duration, showed more obvious and significant characteristics of humidity increase. The statistical analysis of the 44 precipitation cases shows that the relative humidity on the ground and in the air increases significantly before precipitation, and the vertical distribution of the relative humidity and the increase in the water vapor content in the air have a more direct and obvious impact on the precipitation duration. The deep and high-humidity area of 2–4 km is conducive to maintaining the precipitation process for a long time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A field campaign in Liupan Mountains was carried out by the Weather Modification Center of the China Meteorological Administration to study the impact of terrain on precipitation in Northwest China. The vertical structures and microphysical characteristics of a mixed cloud and precipitation process, which means stratiform clouds with embedded convection, over three topographic positions of the Liupan Mountains, namely, the Longde (LD, located on the windward slope), Liupan (LP, located on the mountain top), and Dawan sites (DW, located on the leeward slope), are compared using measurements from ground-based cloud radar (CR), micro rain radar (MRR), and disdrometer (OTT). The 17 h process is classified into cumulus mixed (1149 min), shallow (528 min), and stratiform (570 min) cloud and precipitation stages. Among them, the vertical structures over the three sites are relatively similar in the third stage, while the differences, mainly in cloud-top heights (CTHs) and rain rates (Rs), are significant in the second stage due to the strong instability. Overall, the characteristics of higher concentrations and smaller diameters of raindrops are found in this study, especially at the LP site. Topographic forcing makes the microphysical and dynamic processes of mountaintop clouds and precipitation more intense. The updrafts are the strongest at the LP, caused by orographic uplifting, and the DW is dominated by the downdrafts due to the topography impact on the dynamic structure. Meanwhile, particle falling velocities (Vts) and downdrafts rapidly increase within 0.6 km near the ground over the LP, forming positive feedback, and the collision–coalescence process is dominant. How to predict and study persistent extreme precipitation events (PEPEs) with a prediction period of 1–2 weeks is an important scientific problem faced by the meteorological circles at home and abroad. Based on the accurate description of the flood range caused by 14-day PEPEs, the comprehensive analysis method was used to obtain the weather characteristics related to 14-day PEPEs (including abnormal trough/ridge, westerly jet, atmospheric river (AR) activity, teleconnections, etc.). First, we selected three regions in China, North China (NC), the Yangtze River valley (YRV), and South China (SC), analyzed their 14-day PEPEs in summer (June to August), and composited them into an average circulation (500 hPa geopotential height field) to compare the weather patterns related to PEPEs in these regions. Then, several variables are composited to understand the evolution of the atmospheric state before and during the occurrence of PEPEs. Finally, potential applications of several teleconnection types and composites in advance prediction are studied. The main findings include: the common weather signals during the occurrence of PEPEs are characterized by obvious and continuous a high-low-high saddle field circulation configuration (conducive to the formation of frequent heavy rainfall), active westerly jet (westerly jet is the controlling factor of precipitation), and enhanced water vapor transport (significantly increased atmospheric river activity). In this study, some key characteristics and development of PEPEs were identified, the formation mechanism of China's 14-day PEPEs was revealed, the role of ARs in PEPEs was recognized, and the PEPEs precursor signal was extracted. The timing of the cessation of Meiyu is closely connected to the amount of Meiyu rainfall and the commencement of the rainy season in North China. Accurately forecasting the Meiyu withdrawal date (MWD) over the Yangtze–Huaihe River basin (YHRB) has significant implications for the prevention and mitigation of flooding in eastern China. This study observed an intimate out-of-phase relationship between MWD variations and early spring (March and April) Arctic Sea ice area (SIA) anomalies to the north of the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, as well as SIA anomalies to the north of the Queen Elizabeth Islands (75° N–82° N, 170° E–130° W and 82° N–86° N, 130° W–80° W, respectively) on the interannual timescale. As such, these can be considered key Arctic Sea ice domains connected to Meiyu cessation in the YHRB. The Arctic SIA anomalies in the key domains persist from early spring to early summer (May and June), thus exerting a lag modulation effect on year-to-year changes in Meiyu cessation, which can be demonstrated through observational analysis and results from the Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble Numerical Simulation (CESM-LENS) project. Specifically, the preceding negative SIA anomalies in the key domains are linked to a planetary-scale Rossby wave-like pattern emanating over areas to the northwest of the Chukchi Sea. This tele-connected wave-like pattern is conducive to the generation and maintenance of a quasi-barotropic "north-low–south-high" meridional see-saw pattern over the East Asian–Western North Pacific sector in July, which is a pivotal circulation pattern responsible for delayed Meiyu termination. Furthermore, the situation is the opposite in response to increased sea ice in these key domains within the Arctic. This study proposes a significant cryospheric forcing indicator for Meiyu cessation over the YHRB, which may provide helpful information for operational forecasting of the withdrawal timing of the Meiyu over the YHRB. Based on hourly precipitation data from 2413 national ground observation stations in China and ERA5 (0.25° × 0.25°), this study analyzes the characteristics and causes of extreme rainfall and snow in northeast China from 17–19 November 2020. The results show that extreme precipitation is mainly attributed to the abnormally strong large-scale low vortex and ground cyclone. The significant high-level and low-level coupling in areas with strong rain and snow is conducive to the continuous upward motion, which provides favorable dynamic conditions for the generation and development of extreme precipitation. The frontogenesis effect below the 850 hPa level is obvious, and the extreme precipitation period corresponds to the meeting of the north and south front areas. The symmetrical unstable atmosphere of 925 hPa~700 hPa is forced by the frontogenesis, which strengthens the oblique rising of the low layer and increases the instability, leading to the strengthened development of precipitation. For heavy rainfall and snow in early winter in China, water vapor transport is crucial. The extremely strong low-level jet also provides extremely strong water vapor conditions for the occurrence of heavy rain and snow. The analysis of the extreme rain and snow characteristics and formation mechanism of this weather process can deepen the understanding of extreme weather processes, and provide a useful reference for the research and prediction of extreme precipitation processes. The Huaihe River basin (HRB) is an important economically developed and grain production region in China, which is severely affected by rainfall anomalies, especially extreme rainfall events (EREs). It is crucial to the features of interdecadal change in EREs and the contribution of EREs to summer-mean total rainfall amount (TRA) over the HRB. Using the observational 24-h ac-cumulated rainfall and the reanalysis products from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF), as well as the methods of composite analysis and Mann–Kendal and running t tests, we revealed that the EREs experienced a significant interdecadal increase from the period 1990–1999 to the period 2000–2009. The EREs, particularly long persistent extreme rainfall events (LPEREs), occurred more frequently over the HRB during the latter period and dominated the interdecadal increase in the summer mean TRA. An anomalous high-pressure ridge and associated anomalous anticyclone appeared around Lake Baikal during the latter period, which led to anomalous northeasterlies along the eastern flank of the anomalous anticyclone, inducing the southward intrusion of cold air flow from higher latitudes and associated anomalous ascent and more active convection over the HRB. As such, more EREs and LPEREs occurred during the latter period. The higher pseudo-equivalent temperatures also support more active convective ascent and relevant more EREs. The results may shed light on further understanding the effect of large-scale atmospheric circulation on the interdecadal variability of EREs over the HRB, helping mitigate the disastrous impacts of EREs on local ecosystems, agriculture, soil erosion, and societies. Extreme typhoon rainfall can lead to damaging floods near the coastal region in mainland China. In the present study, we calibrate the parameters for a parametric hurricane rain model by using the precipitation radar (PR) data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) (i.e., PR-TRMM) and the TRMM microwave imager (TMI) data (i.e., TMI-TRMM). To show the applicability of the model for the tropical cyclone (TC) rain hazard assessment, we combine the developed rainfall intensity model with historical and synthetic TC tracks to estimate the T-year return period value of the accumulated rainfall in 24 h, QA24-T. We map QA24-100 for part of the coastal region in mainland China, showing that the spatial variation of QA24-100 is relatively smooth. It was found that the estimated QA24-100 using the model developed, based on the snapshots from PR-TRMM, is about 60% of that obtained using the model developed based on the snapshots from TMI-TRMM. This reflects the differences in the rainfall intensities reported in TMI-TRMM and PR-TRMM. As part of verification, we compare the estimated return period value to that obtained by using the record from surface meteorological stations at a few locations. The comparison indicates that, on average, QA24-100 based on gauge data is about 1.4 and 2.3 times that obtained using the model developed based on the snapshots from PR-TRMM and TRM-TRMM, respectively. This suggests that, for TC rain hazard estimation, one may consider the empirical scaling factor of 1.4 and 2.4 for the rainfall intensity models developed based on snapshots from PR-TRMM and TMI-TRMM, respectively. Highly convection-related short-duration heavy rainfall (SDHR), defined as rainfall greater than 20 mm h−1 of a whole hour, causes severe damage every year in China. An objective forecasting method is developed to provide guidance products for the short-term probability of SDHR. Representative parameters of environmental moisture content, instability, and dynamical forcing are selected as predictors based on the ingredients-based methodology. The predictors are selected by comparing their ability to discriminate between SDHR and both no rainfall and ordinary rainfall with hourly rainfall records and the NCEP reanalysis dataset during the warm seasons of 2002 and 2009. A fuzzy logic approach is obtained for the calculation of SDHR probability. Intervals of intensities are obtained based on specific percentiles and various weight settings examined. The probabilistic SDHR forecasts during the 2015 warm seasons with the NCEP GFS dataset are obtained, and forecasts are evaluated by using an operational used spatial verification method. Results show that the reference operational SDHR forecasts are surpassed by the 00–12 h period objective SDHR forecasts measured with the maximum critical success index (CSI), and even the average CSI (CSIave) for the top groups is better than the reference. The guidance SDHR products are skillful within 60 h. Although the weights vary significantly, the short-term patterns of the SDHR probability are mainly determined by the environmental conditions. The objective forecasting method is ingredients-based but is combined with fuzzy logic algorithms. The new approach provides a feasible exploration of the convective weather phenomenon. Based on rainfall data for the period of 1960–2018 from 382 stations in southwest China and multiple reanalysis datasets, interannual variation of rainfall in late spring over Southwest China and associated sea surface temperature and atmospheric circulation anomalies are examined. The first leading mode of late-spring rainfall anomalies displays a uniform-distribution pattern. The second leading mode shows a zonal dipole pattern. The leading mode is related to an atmospheric wave train over mid-high latitudes of Eurasia, with a center of action of atmospheric anomaly over Southwest China. The atmospheric anomalies over Southwest China modulate late-spring rainfall there via modulating vertical motion and water vapor transport. In addition, the leading mode of late-spring rainfall anomalies has a close relation with sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. SSTA in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific impacts late-spring rainfall anomalies over Southwest China via modulation of the tropical Walker and Hadley circulation. The second leading mode of late-spring rainfall variation over Southwest China is closely associated with SSTA in the tropical western Pacific and a mid-high latitude wave train. SSTA in the tropical western Pacific and the mid-high latitudes wave train together leads to out-of-phase variation of meridional wind anomalies between western and eastern parts of Southwest China, which further results in a zonal dipole rainfall anomaly over Southwest China. The icing environment is an important threat to aircraft flight safety. In this work, the icing index is calculated using linear interpolation and based on temperature and relative humidity (RH) curves obtained from radiosonde observations in China. The results show that: (1) there are obvious differences in icing index distribution in parameter over various climatic regions of China. The differences are reflected in duration, main altitude, and ice intensity. The reason for the differences is related to the temperature and humidity environment. (2) Before and after the summer rainfall process, there are obvious changes in the ice accretion index in the 4–6 km altitude area of Northeast China, and the areas with serious ice accretion are coincident with areas with large rainfall estimates. (3) In the process of snowfall in winter, the ground snow has an impact on the ice accumulation index in the east of China. When it is snowing, ice accumulation in low altitudes is serious. Coastal mangroves are increasingly recognized as valuable natural resources and important sites of water and carbon exchange. In this study, we examine atmospheric water cycling in the boundary layer above a coastal mangrove forest in southern China. We collected site observations of isotopic ratios in water vapor and precipitation along with core meteorological variables during July 2017. Our evaluation of these data highlights the influences of large-scale atmospheric transport and rain-vapor exchange in the boundary layer water budget. Rain-vapor exchange takes different forms for different types of rainfall events. The evolution of isotopic ratios in water vapor suggests that substantial rain recycling occurs during the passage of large-scale organized convective systems, but that this process is much weaker during rainfall associated with less organized events of local origin. We further examine the influences of large-scale transport during the observation period using a Lagrangian trajectory-based moisture source analysis. More than half (63%) of the boundary layer moisture during the study period traced back to the South China Sea, consistent with prevailing southerly to southwesterly flow. Other important moisture sources included mainland Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, local land areas (e.g., Hainan Island and the Leizhou Peninsula), and the Pacific Ocean. Together, these five regions contributed more than 90% of the water vapor. The most pronounced changes in isotopic content due to large-scale transport during the study period were related to the passage of Tropical Storm Talas. The outer rain bands of this tropical cyclone passed over the measurement site on 15-17 July, causing a sharp reduction in the heavy isotopic content of boundary layer water vapor and a substantial increase in deuterium excess. These changes are consistent with extensive isotopic distillation and rain-vapor exchange in downdrafts associated with the intense convective systems produced by this storm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the boreal summer from June to August, rainfall in Southwestern China shows substantial interdecadal variabilities on timescales longer than 10 years. Based on observational analyses and numerical modeling, we investigated the characteristics of interdecadal Southwestern China summer rainfall (SWCSR) and its dynamic drivers. We find that the SWCSR is markedly impacted by the interdecadal Indian Ocean basin mode (ID-IOBM) of the sea surface temperature (SST), which may induce anomalous inter-hemispheric vertical circulation. During the cold phase of the ID-IOBM, an enhanced lower-level divergence and upper-level convergence exist over the tropical Indian Ocean. The simultaneous lower-level outflow anomalies further converge over the Indo-China peninsula, resulting in an anomalous ascending motion and a lower-level cyclone that contribute to strengthening the eastward moisture transport from the Bay of Bengal to Southwestern China. The joint effects of the anomalous ascending motion and the above-normal moisture transport play a key role in increasing the SWCSR. In summers during the warm phase of the ID-IOBM, the situation is approximately the same, but with opposite polarity. After the beginning of the 1970s, the impacts of interdecadal Indian Ocean dipole (ID-IOD) on SWCSR is strengthening. The anomalous vertical circulation associated with the positive (negative) phase of ID-IOD is in favor of decreased (increased) rainfall in SWC. However, the impacts of ID-IOD on SWCSR is relatively weak before the 1970s, indicating that the ID-IOD is the secondary driver of the interdecadal variability of SWCSR. The impact of Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) upon extreme rainfall in southern China was studied using the Real-time Multivariate MJO (RMM) index and daily precipitation data from high-resolution stations in China. The probability-distribution function (PDF) of November-March rainfall in southern China was found to be skewed toward larger (smaller) values in phases 2-3 (6-7) of MJO, during which the probability of extreme rainfall events increased (reduced) by 30-50% (20-40%) relative to all days in the same season. Physical analysis indicated that the favorable conditions for generating extreme rainfall are associated with southwesterly moisture convergence and vertical moisture advection over southern China, while the direct contributions from horizontal moisture advection are insignificant. Based on the above results, the model-based predictability for extreme rainfall in winter was examined using hindcasts from the Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) of NOAA. It is shown that the modulations of MJO on extreme rainfall are captured and forecasted well by CFSv2, despite the existence of a relatively small bias. Droughts and floods have frequently occurred in Southwest China (SWC) during the past several decades. Yet, the understanding of the mechanism of precipitation in SWC is still a challenge, since the East Asian monsoon and Indian monsoon potentially influence the rainfall in this region. Thus, the prediction of precipitation in SWC has become a difficult and critical topic in climatology. We develop a novel multi-variable network-based method to delineate the relations between the global sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) and the precipitation anomalies (PA) in SWC. Our results show that the out-degree patterns in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Ocean significantly influence the PA in SWC. In particular, we find that such patterns dominated by extreme precipitation change with the seasons. Furthermore, we uncover that the teleconnections between the global SSTA and rainfall can be described by the in-degree patterns, which dominated by several vital nodes within SWC. Based on the characteristics of these nodes, we find that the key SSTA areas affect the pattern of the nodes in SWC with some specific time delays that could be helpful to improve the long-term prediction of precipitation in SWC. The characteristics of the synoptic situation and the evolution of the organized warm-sector rainfalls (OWSRs) in the coastal region of South China in the pre-summer rainy season were investigated, using a period (2011–2016) of high-resolution observational data and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis Interim (ERA-Interim) data. The results show that a strong southwesterly low-level jet (LLJ) ahead of a trough over southwestern China with a marked boundary-layer jet (BLJ) over the northern South China Sea (synoptic situation SWLLJ) or a prominent, low-level anticyclone over the Yangtze River Basin (synoptic situation ACR) is present when the OWSRs occur in the coastal region of South China. The OWSRs are prone to initiate on the windward side of the coastal mountains, owing to the convergence enhanced by the colliding of the BLJ with the mountains and the coupling of double LLJs near the coast (for SWLLJ), or due to the convergence between northerly and southeasterly winds near the coastal mountains (for ACR). The OWSRs present a long extension when the LLJ axis is nearby. The translation of the LLJ itself also promotes the long extension of the OWSRs. In contrast, the OWSRs show a short extension when the LLJ axis is farther away or ACR occurs. Meanwhile, the OWSRs are directed northeastward in Guangxi Province and more eastward in Guangdong Province, probably owing to the orientation difference of the LLJ in these two provinces. The rainfall systems in the ACR situation tend to move eastward, whereas those in the SWLLJ situation are prone to move eastward when equivalently strong or much-stronger upper-level winds overlay the LLJ, but move northeastward when much weaker upper-level winds couple with the LLJ. This study evaluates 32 climate models from CMIP5 compared with a daily gridded observation dataset of extreme precipitation indices including total extreme precipitation (R95p), maximum consecutive five days of precipitation (RX5day) and wet days larger than 10 mm of precipitation (R10mm) over Northern China during the historical period (1986–2005). Results show the majority models have good performance on spatial distribution but overestimate the amplitude of precipitation over Northern China. Most models can also capture interannual variation of R95p and RX5d, but with poor simulations on R10mm. Considering both spatial and temporal factors, the best multi-model ensemble (Group 1) has been selected and improved by 42%, 34%, and 37% for R95p, RX5d, and R10mm, respectively. Projection of extreme precipitation indicates that the fastest-rising region is in Northwest China due to the enhanced rainfall intensity. However, the uncertainty analysis shows the increase of extreme rainfall over Northwest China has a low confidence level. The projection of increasing extreme rainfall over Northeast China from Group 1 due to the longer extreme rainfall days is more credible. The weak subtropical high and southwest winds from Arabian Sea lead to the low wet biases from Group 1 and the cyclonic anomalies over Northeast China, which result in more extreme precipitation. We use a case study to show that a continuous heavy rainfall process in southern China was closely related to tropical cyclone activity in the Bay of Bengal. The continuous heavy rainfall that occurred in southern China on 11–13 May 2002 can be considered as two different processes. The first process, referred to as a predecessor rain event, occurred over southwestern China before landfall of the tropical cyclone. The second process occurred after dissipation of the tropical cyclone when its remnant caused heavy rainfall that expanded from southwestern China to the middle to lower reaches of the Yangtze–Huaihe river basin. Both of the heavy rainfall processes were closely related to the transport of warm, moist air associated with a tropical cyclone originating over the Bay of Bengal, but the mechanisms in the two processes were quite different. Low-level orographic forcing was the main contributor to the predecessor rain event, whereas baroclinic frontogenesis induced by thermal advection was the main contributor to the tropical cyclone remnant event. Excessive rainfall was observed over Southwest China in July 2018, leading to floods in several major tributaries of the Yangtze River and landslide and debris flow in the neighboring provinces. The rainfall during 7–11 July was unusually heavy and broke the record that can be traced back to 1961. The occurrence of the excessive rain can be attributed to the anomalous convection over the western North Pacific and the presence of a mid-latitude Rossby wave train. On one hand, the convection over the western North Pacific was anomalously strong in July 2018, and it could have excited the negative phase of the Pacific–Japan pattern and led to a northwestward shift of the western Pacific subtropical high. Hence, the water vapor transport toward inland China including Southwest China was enhanced, providing a favorable moisture environment for precipitation. On the other hand, a mid-latitude Rossby wave train was observed to propagate from Northern Europe towards East Asia, which was conducive to anomalous ascending motion over Southwest China via warm advection and differential vorticity advection, creating a favorable dynamical condition for precipitation.
