This paper explores the under-appreciated role of evolving temperature variability in crop production in the overall relationship between crop production and climate change. Prior studies can be characterized by two broad approaches: estimation of the impact of climate change over some observed period and forecasting crop production levels under feasible climate scenarios. A standard method for predicting crop production under climate change involves regressing logged crop production on quadratic weather variables and region-level fixed effects (Lobell and Burke, I Agricultural and Forest Meteorology i , 2010).
