FRB 190608 was detected by ASKAP and localized to a spiral galaxy at$z_{host}=0.11778$ in the SDSS footprint. The burst has a large dispersionmeasure ($DM_{FRB}=339.8$ $pc/cm^3$) compared to the expected cosmic average atits redshift. It also has a large rotation measure ($RM_{FRB}=353$ $rad/m^2$)and scattering timescale ($\tau=3.3$ $ms$ at $1.28$ $GHz$). Chittidi et al(2020) perform a detailed analysis of the ultraviolet and optical emission ofthe host galaxy and estimate the host DM contribution to be $110\pm 37$$pc/cm^3$. This work complements theirs and reports the analysis of the opticaldata of galaxies in the foreground of FRB 190608 to explore their contributionsto the FRB signal. Together, the two manuscripts delineate an observationallydriven, end-to-end study of matter distribution along an FRB sightline; thefirst study of its kind. Combining KCWI observations and public SDSS data, weestimate the expected cosmic dispersion measure $DM_{cosmic}$ along thesightline to FRB 190608. We first estimate the contribution of hot, ionized gasin intervening virialized halos ($DM_{halos} \approx 7-28$ $pc/cm^3$). Then,using the Monte Carlo Physarum Machine (MCPM) methodology, we produce a 3D mapof ionized gas in cosmic web filaments and compute the DM contribution frommatter outside halos ($DM_{IGM} \approx 91-126$ $pc/cm^3$). This implies agreater fraction of ionized gas along this sightline is extant outsidevirialized halos. We also investigate whether the intervening halos can accountfor the large FRB rotation measure and pulse width and conclude that it isimplausible. Both the pulse broadening and the large Faraday rotation likelyarise from the progenitor environment or the host galaxy.

We seek to understand the composition and variability of fast solar wind (FSW) and slow Alfvénic solar wind emerging from coronal holes (CHs). We leverage an opportune conjunction between Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe (PSP) during PSP Encounter 11 to include compositional diagnostics from the Solar Orbiter Heavy Ion Sensor as these variations provide crucial insights into the origin and nature of the solar wind. We use potential field source surface and magnetohydrodynamic models to connect the observed plasma at PSP and Solar Orbiter to its origin footpoint in the photosphere and compare these results with the in situ measurements. A very clear signature of a heliospheric current sheet crossing as evidenced by enhancements in low first ionization potential (FIP) elements, ion charge state ratios, proton density, low Alfvénicity, and polarity estimates validates the combination of modeling, data, and mapping. We identify two FSW streams emerging from small equatorial CHs with low ion charge state ratios, low FIP bias, high Alfvénicity, and low footpoint brightness, yet anomalously low alpha particle abundance for both streams. We identify high-Alfvénicity slow solar wind emerging from the overexpanded boundary of a CH having intermediate alpha abundance, high Alfvénicity, and dips in ion charge state ratios corresponding to CH boundaries. WR 137 (HD 192641) is a binary system consisting of a carbon-rich Wolf–Rayet (W-R) star and an Oe companion star in a 13 yr orbit. Near periastron, the winds of the two stars collide and form carbonaceous dust. We obtained three mid-infrared grism spectra of the system with SOFIA and FORCAST during the last year of SOFIA's operations in 2021 July, 2021 February, and 2022 May (Cycle 9). Within these spectra, we have identified several wind lines from He i, He ii, C iii, and C iv that are emitted from the W-R wind as well as a weak emission feature around 6.3–6.4 μ m that may have shifted its peak flux from 6.29 to 6.41 μ m through this time period. The weak feature grew as the continuum dust emission grew while the W-R emission appeared to decline due to lower contrast with the continuum. Furthermore, we observe that the peak of the feature shifts to redder wavelengths during the observations. We compare this feature to the unidentified infrared feature and other emission lines identified in dusty carbon-rich W-R (WC) binaries. For WR 137, we speculate that mixing of the winds in the system with the Oe star's disk is important for starting the dust formation and that it is less important as dust formation continues. The recent observation of a common red-noise process in pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) suggests that the detection of nanohertz gravitational waves might be around the corner. However, in order to confidently attribute this red process to gravitational waves, one must observe the Hellings–Downs curve—the telltale angular correlation function associated with a gravitational-wave background. This effort is complicated by the complex modeling of pulsar noise. Without proper care, misspecified noise models can lead to false-positive detections. Background estimation using "quasi-resampling" methods such as sky scrambles and phase shifts, which use the data to characterize the noise, are therefore important tools for assessing significance. We investigate the ability of current PTA experiments to estimate their background with "quasi-independent" scrambles—characterized by a statistical "match" below the fiducial value: ∣ M ∣ < 0.1. We show that sky scrambling is affected by "saturation" after  (10) quasi-independent realizations; subsequent scrambles are no longer quasi-independent. We show that phase scrambling saturates after  (100) quasi-independent realizations. With so few independent scrambles, it is difficult to make reliable statements about the ≳5 σ tail of the null distribution of the detection statistic. We sketch out various methods by which one may increase the number of independent scrambles. We also consider an alternative approach, wherein one reframes the background estimation problem so that the significance is calculated using statistically dependent scrambles. In 2018 an ultra–wide-bandwidth low-frequency (UWL) receiver was installed on the 64 m Parkes Radio Telescope, enabling observations with an instantaneous frequency coverage from 704 to 4032 MHz. Here we present the analysis of a 3 yr data set of 35 ms pulsars observed with the UWL by the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array, using wide-band timing methods. The two key differences compared to typical narrowband methods are (1) generation of two-dimensional templates accounting for pulse shape evolution with frequency and (2) simultaneous measurements of the pulse time of arrival (TOA) and dispersion measure (DM). This is the first time that wide-band timing has been applied to a uniform data set collected with a single large fractional bandwidth receiver, for which such techniques were originally developed. As a result of our study, we present a set of profile evolution models and new timing solutions, including initial noise analysis. Precision of our TOA and DM measurements is in the range of 0.005–2.08 μ s and (0.043–14.24) × 10−4 cm−3 pc, respectively, with 94% of the pulsars achieving a median TOA uncertainty of less than 1 μ s. We present the discovery and multiwavelength characterization of SRGA J181414.6-225604, a Galactic hard X-ray transient discovered during the ongoing SRG/ART-XC sky survey. Using data from the Palomar Gattini-IR survey, we identify a spatially and temporally coincident variable infrared (IR) source, IRAS 18111-2257, and classify it as a very-late-type (M7â€"M8), long-period (1502 ± 24 days), and luminous (M K ≈ âˆ'9.9 ± 0.2) O-rich Mira donor star located at a distance of ≈14.6+2.9âˆ'2.3 kpc. Combining multicolor photometric data over the last ≈25 yr, we show that the IR counterpart underwent a recent (starting ≈800 days before the X-ray flare) enhanced mass-loss (reaching ≈2.1 Ă— 10âˆ'5 M ⊙ yrâˆ'1) episode, resulting in an expanding dust shell obscuring the underlying star. Multi-epoch follow-up observations from Swift, NICER, and NuSTAR reveal a ≈200 day long X-ray outburst reaching a peak luminosity of L X ≈ 2.5 Ă— 1036 erg sâˆ'1, characterized by a heavily absorbed (N H ≈ 6 Ă— 1022 cmâˆ'2) X-ray spectrum consistent with an optically thick Comptonized plasma. The X-ray spectral and timing behavior suggest the presence of clumpy wind accretion, together with a dense ionized nebula overabundant in silicate material surrounding the compact object. Together, we show that SRGA J181414.6-225604 is a new symbiotic X-ray binary in outburst, triggered by an intense dust-formation episode of a highly evolved donor. Our results offer the first direct confirmation for the speculated connection between enhanced late-stage donor mass loss and the active lifetimes of symbiotic X-ray binaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the independent discovery of PSR J0026-1955 with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) in the ongoing Southern-sky MWA Rapid Two-metre pulsar survey. J0026-1955 has a period of ∼1.306 s, a dispersion measure of ∼20.869 pc cmâˆ'3, and a nulling fraction of ∼77%. This pulsar highlights the advantages of the survey's long dwell times (∼80 minutes), which, when fully searched, will be sensitive to the expected population of similarly bright, intermittent pulsars with long nulls. A single-pulse analysis in the MWA's 140â€"170 MHz band also reveals a complex subpulse drifting behavior, including both rapid changes of the drift rate characteristic of mode switching pulsars, as well as a slow, consistent evolution of the drift rate within modes. In some longer drift sequences, interruptions in the otherwise smooth drift rate evolution occur preferentially at a particular phase, typically lasting a few pulses. These properties make this pulsar an ideal test bed for prevailing models of drifting behavior such as the carousel model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present optical and infrared (IR) light curves of NaSt1, also known as Wolfâ€"Rayet 122, with observations from Palomar Gattini-IR (PGIR), the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), the Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope, the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, and the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN). We identify a P = 309.7 ± 0.7 day photometric period from the optical and IR light curves that reveal periodic, sinusoidal variability between 2014 July and 2021 July. We also present historical IR light curves taken between 1983 July and 1989 May, which show variability consistent with the period of the present-day light curves. In the past, NaSt1 was brighter in the J band with larger variability amplitudes than the present-day PGIR values, suggesting that NaSt1 exhibits variability on longer (≳decade) timescales. Sinusoidal fits to the recent optical and IR light curves show that the amplitude of NaSt1's variability differs at various wavelengths and also reveal significant phase offsets of 17.0 ± 2.5 day between the ZTF r and PGIR J light curves. We interpret the 310 day photometric period from NaSt1 as the orbital period of an enshrouded massive binary. We suggest that the photometric variability of NaSt1 may arise from variations in the line-of-sight optical depth toward circumstellar optical/IR-emitting regions throughout its orbit due to colliding-wind dust formation. We speculate that past mass transfer in NaSt1 may have been triggered by Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) during an eruptive phase of an Ofpe/WN9 star. We present Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet and infrared observations of eight fast radio burst (FRB) host galaxies with subarcsecond localizations, including the hosts of three known repeating FRBs. We quantify their spatial distributions and locations with respect to their host galaxy light distributions, finding that they occur at moderate host-normalized offsets of 1.4re ([0.6, 2.1]re; 68% interval) and on fainter regions of their hosts in terms of IR light but overall trace the radial distribution of IR light in their galaxies. The FRBs in our tested distribution do not clearly trace the distributions of any other transient population with known progenitors and are statistically distinct from the locations of LGRBs, H-poor SLSNe, SGRBs, and Ca-rich transients. We further find that most FRBs are not in regions of elevated local star formation rates and stellar mass surface densities in comparison to the mean global values of their hosts. We also place upper limits on the IR flux at the FRB positions of mIR ≳ 24.8–27.6 AB mag, constraining both satellite and background galaxies to luminosities well below the host luminosity of FRB 121102. We find that 5/8 FRB hosts exhibit clear spiral arm features in IR light, and that the positions of all well-localized FRBs located in such hosts are consistent with their spiral arms, although not on their brightest regions. Our results do not strongly support the primary progenitor channel of FRBs being connected with either the most massive (stripped-envelope) stars or events that require kicks and long delay times (neutron star mergers). Recent astronomical observations and planetary missions have found that complex organics are prevalent throughout the universe, from the solar system to distant galaxies. However, the detailed chemical composition and the synthesis pathway of these organics are still unclear. Circumstellar envelopes represent excellent laboratories to study the abiological synthesis of extraterrestrial organics. Novae, having very short dynamical lifetimes, can put severe constraints on the chemical pathway of organic synthesis. Here, we report a laboratory simulation of carbonaceous dust with inclusion of Nitrogen in the form of Quenched Nitrogen-included Carbonaceous Composite (QNCC). QNCC is produced by the quenched condensation of plasma gas generated from the nitrogen gas, and aromatic and/or aliphatic hydrocarbon solids by applying microwave discharge (2.45 GHz, 300 W). We have shown that the spectra of QNCC have a close resemblance to the observed infrared spectra of novae. The results of the infrared and X-ray analyses suggest that the nitrogen inclusion in the form of amine plays an important role in the origin of the broad 8 μm feature of dusty novae. We conclude that QNCC is at present the best laboratory analog of organic dust formed in the circumstellar medium of dusty classical novae, which carries the unidentified infrared bands in novae via thermal emission process. The nova rate in the Milky Way remains largely uncertain, despite its vital importance in constraining models of Galactic chemical evolution as well as understanding progenitor channels for Type Ia supernovae. The rate has been previously estimated to be in the range of ≈10–300 yr−1, either based on extrapolations from a handful of very bright optical novae or the nova rates in nearby galaxies; both methods are subject to debatable assumptions. The total discovery rate of optical novae remains much smaller (≈5–10 yr−1) than these estimates, even with the advent of all-sky optical time-domain surveys. Here, we present a systematic sample of 12 spectroscopically confirmed Galactic novae detected in the first 17 months of Palomar Gattini-IR (PGIR), a wide-field near-infrared time-domain survey. Operating in the J band (≈1.2 μm), which is significantly less affected by dust extinction compared to optical bands, the extinction distribution of the PGIR sample is highly skewed to a large extinction values (>50% of events obscured by AV ≳ 5 mag). Using recent estimates for the distribution of Galactic mass and dust, we show that the extinction distribution of the PGIR sample is commensurate with dust models. The PGIR extinction distribution is inconsistent with that reported in previous optical searches (null-hypothesis probability <0.01%), suggesting that a large population of highly obscured novae have been systematically missed in previous optical searches. We perform the first quantitative simulation of a 3π time-domain survey to estimate the Galactic nova rate using PGIR, and derive a rate of yr−1. We are undertaking the first systematic infrared (IR) census of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars in the Milky Way, beginning with IR light curves from the Palomar Gattini IR (PGIR) survey. The PGIR is a 30 cm J-band telescope with a 25 deg2 camera that is surveying 18,000 deg2 of the northern sky (δ > −28°) at a cadence of 2 days. We present PGIR light curves for 922 RCB candidates selected from a mid-IR color-based catalog. Of these 922, 149 are promising RCB candidates, as they show pulsations or declines similar to RCB stars. The majority of the candidates that are not RCB stars are either long-period variables (LPVs) or RV Tauri stars. We identify IR color-based criteria to better distinguish between RCB stars and LPVs. As part of a pilot spectroscopic run, we obtain NIR spectra for 26 of the 149 promising candidates and spectroscopically confirm 11 new RCB stars. We detect strong He i λ10830 features in the spectra of all RCB stars, likely originating within high-velocity (200–400 km s−1) winds in their atmospheres. Nine of these RCB stars show 12C16O and 12C18O molecular absorption features, suggesting that they are formed through a white dwarf merger. We detect quasiperiodic pulsations in the light curves of five RCB stars. The periods range between 30 and 125 days and likely originate from the strange-mode instability in these stars. We present a spectroscopic analysis of 7774 Å O i triplet abundances, 8498–8662 Å Ca ii triplet chromospheric activity, and rotation in the Pleiades open cluster, with the objective of thoroughly examining the O triplet overabundance trends observed in cool open cluster dwarfs, and to thereby make clear the cause of that trend. High-dispersion, contemporaneous spectra of the O i triplet, Ca ii triplet, and Hα spectral regions in 41 Pleiades dwarfs were acquired using Hydra on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. Our Ca ii emission equivalent-width data exhibit a strong positive correlation with decreasing Teff, with the rapidly rotating stars enhanced by up to 50% above the slowly rotating stars. Our triplet [O/H] values exhibit a statistically significant positive correlation with total Ca ii triplet emission, and similarly, significant correlations have been found by every study to date that used contemporaneous O triplet abundance and chromospheric activity data, which is strong evidence that chromospheric activity is the cause of the observed overabundance trends. Based on the slowly rotating, low Ca ii emission stars in the near-solar range 5450 K < Teff < 6100 K, we find a cluster mean [O/H] = + 0.143 ± 0.061, consistent with the substantial super-solar [O/H] values exhibited by most young (< 1 Gyr) open clusters. Intensity scintillations of radio pulsars are known to originate from interference between waves scattered by the electron density irregularities of interstellar plasma, often leading to parabolic arcs in the two-dimensional power spectrum of the recorded dynamic spectrum. The degree of arc curvature depends on the distance to the scattering plasma and its transverse velocity with respect to the line of sight. We report the observation of annual and orbital variations in the curvature of scintillation arcs over a period of 16 yr for the bright millisecond pulsar, PSR J0437−4715. These variations are the signature of the relative transverse motions of Earth, the pulsar, and the scattering medium, which we model to obtain precise measurements of parameters of the pulsar's binary orbit and the scattering medium itself. We observe two clear scintillation arcs in most of our >5000 observations, and we show that they originate from scattering by thin screens located at distances D1 = 89.8 ± 0.4 pc and D2 = 124 ± 3 pc from Earth. The best-fit scattering model we derive for the brightest arc yields the pulsar's orbital inclination angle, i = 137.°1 ± 0.°3, and longitude of ascending node, Ω = 206.°3 ± 0.°4. Using scintillation arcs for precise astrometry and orbital dynamics can be superior to modeling variations in the diffractive scintillation timescale, because the arc curvature is independent of variations in the level of turbulence of interstellar plasma. This technique can be used in combination with pulsar timing to determine the full three-dimensional orbital geometries of binary pulsars and provides parameters essential for testing theories of gravity and constraining neutron star masses. We present observations and detailed characterizations of five new host galaxies of fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and localized to ≲1″. Combining these galaxies with FRB hosts from the literature, we introduce criteria based on the probability of chance coincidence to define a subsample of 10 highly confident associations (at z = 0.03–0.52), 3 of which correspond to known repeating FRBs. Overall, the FRB-host galaxies exhibit a broad, continuous range of color (Mu − Mr = 0.9–2.0), stellar mass (M⋆ = 108 − 6 × 1010M⊙), and star formation rate (SFR = 0.05–10 M⊙ yr−1) spanning the full parameter space occupied by z < 0.5 galaxies. However, they do not track the color–magnitude, SFR–M⋆, nor BPT diagrams of field galaxies surveyed at similar redshifts. There is an excess of "green valley" galaxies and an excess of emission-line ratios indicative of a harder radiation field than that generated by star formation alone. From the observed stellar mass distribution, we rule out the hypothesis that FRBs strictly track stellar mass in galaxies (>99% c.l.). We measure a median offset of 3.3 kpc from the FRB to the estimated center of the host galaxies and compare the host-burst offset distribution and other properties with the distributions of long- and short-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs and SGRBs), core-collapse supernovae (CC-SNe), and SNe Ia. This analysis rules out galaxies hosting LGRBs (faint, star-forming galaxies) as common hosts for FRBs (>95% c.l.). Other transient channels (SGRBs, CC-, and SNe Ia) have host-galaxy properties and offsets consistent with the FRB distributions. WR 112 is a dust-forming carbon-rich Wolf–Rayet (WC) binary with a dusty circumstellar nebula that exhibits a complex asymmetric morphology, which traces the orbital motion and dust formation in the colliding winds of the central binary. Unraveling the complicated circumstellar dust emission around WR 112 therefore provides an opportunity to understand the dust formation process in colliding-wind WC binaries. In this work, we present a multi-epoch analysis of the circumstellar dust around WR 112 using seven high spatial resolution (FWHM ∼ 0.″3–0.″4) N-band (λ ∼ 12 μm) imaging observations spanning almost 20 yr and that includes images obtained from Subaru/COMICS in 2019 October. In contrast to previous interpretations of a face-on spiral morphology, we observe clear evidence of proper motion of the circumstellar dust around WR 112 consistent with a nearly edge-on spiral with a θs = 55° half-opening angle and a ∼20 yr period. The revised near edge-on geometry of WR 112 reconciles previous observations of highly variable nonthermal radio emission that was inconsistent with a face-on geometry. We estimate a revised distance to WR 112 of kpc based on the observed dust expansion rate and a spectroscopically derived WC terminal wind velocity of km s−1. With the newly derived WR 112 parameters, we fit optically thin dust spectral energy distribution models and determine a dust production rate of M⊙ yr−1, which demonstrates that WR 112 is one of the most prolific dust-making WC systems known. Despite existing constraints, it remains possible that up to 35% of all dark matter is comprised of compact objects, such as the black holes in the 10–100 M⊙ range whose existence has been confirmed by LIGO. The strong gravitational lensing of transients such as fast radio bursts (FRBs) and gamma-ray bursts has been suggested as a more sensitive probe for compact dark matter than intensity fluctuations observed in microlensing experiments. Recently the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder has reported burst substructure down to 15 μs timescales in FRBs in the redshift range 0.3–0.5. We investigate here the implications of this for the detectability of compact dark matter by FRBs. We find that a sample size of ∼130 FRBs would be required to constrain compact dark matter to less than the existing 35% limit with 95% confidence, if it were distributed along ≳1 Gpc-long FRB sightlines through the cosmic web. Conversely, existing constraints on the fraction of compact dark matter permit as many as 1 in ≈40 of all z ≲ 0.4 FRBs to exhibit microlensed burst structure. Approximately 170 FRBs intercepting halos within ∼50 kpc would be required to exclude the fraction of compact dark matter in each intercepted halo to a similar level. Furthermore, we consider the cumulative effects of lensing of the FRB signal by a macroscopic dark matter distribution. We conclude that lensing from a uniform distribution of compact objects is likely not observable, but suggest that FRBs may set meaningful limits on power-law distributions of dark matter. We present a dust spectral energy distribution (SED) and binary stellar population analysis revisiting the dust production rates (DPRs) in the winds of carbon-rich Wolf–Rayet (WC) binaries and their impact on galactic dust budgets. DustEM SED models of 19 Galactic WC "dustars" reveal DPRs of M⊙ yr−1 and carbon dust condensation fractions, χC, between 0.002% and 40%. A large (0.1–1.0 μm) dust grain size composition is favored for efficient dustars where χC ≳ 1%. Results for dustars with known orbital periods verify a power-law relation between χC, orbital period, WC mass-loss rate, and wind velocity consistent with predictions from theoretical models of dust formation in colliding-wind binaries. We incorporated dust production into Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis (BPASS) models to analyze dust production rates from WC dustars, asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs), red supergiants (RSGs), and core-collapse supernovae (SNe). BPASS models assuming constant star formation (SF) and a coeval 106M⊙ stellar population were performed at low, Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)–like, and solar metallicities (Z = 0.001, 0.008, and 0.020). Both constant SF and coeval models indicate that SNe are net dust destroyers at all metallicities. Constant SF models at LMC-like metallicities show that AGB stars slightly outproduce WC binaries and RSGs by factors of 2–3, whereas at solar metallicities WC binaries are the dominant source of dust for ∼60 Myr until the onset of AGBs, which match the dust input of WC binaries. The Galactic Center contains some of the most extreme conditions for star formation in our Galaxy, as well as many other phenomena that are unique to this region. Given our relative proximity to the Galactic Center, we are able to study details of physical processes to a level that is simply not yet possible for more distant galaxies, yielding an otherwise inaccessible view of the nuclear region of a galaxy. We recently carried out a targeted imaging survey of mid-infrared bright portions of the Galactic Center at 25 and 37 μm using the FORCAST instrument on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). This survey was one of the inaugural Legacy Programs from SOFIA cycle 7, observing a total area of 403 arcmin2 (2180 pc2), including the Sgr A, B, and C complexes. Here we present an overview of the survey strategy, observations, and data reduction as an accompaniment to the initial public release of the survey data. We discuss interesting regions and features within the data, including extended features near the circumnuclear disk, structures in the Arched Filaments and Sickle H ii regions, and signs of embedded star formation in Sgr B2 and Sgr C. We also feature a handful of less well studied mid-infrared sources located between Sgr A and Sgr C that could be sites of relatively isolated star formation activity. We present a systematic study of the most luminous (MIR [Vega magnitudes] brighter than −14) infrared (IR) transients discovered by the SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) between 2014 and 2018 in nearby galaxies (D < 35 Mpc). The sample consists of nine events that span peak IR luminosities of M[4.5],peak between −14 and −18.2, show IR colors between 0.2 < ([3.6]–[4.5]) < 3.0, and fade on timescales between 55 days < tfade < 480 days. The two reddest events (AV > 12) show multiple, luminous IR outbursts over several years and have directly detected, massive progenitors in archival imaging. With analyses of extensive, multiwavelength follow-up, we suggest the following possible classifications: five obscured core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), two erupting massive stars, one luminous red nova, and one intermediate-luminosity red transient. We define a control sample of all optically discovered transients recovered in SPIRITS galaxies and satisfying the same selection criteria. The control sample consists of eight CCSNe and one Type Iax SN. We find that 7 of the 13 CCSNe in the SPIRITS sample have lower bounds on their extinction of 2 < AV < 8. We estimate a nominal fraction of CCSNe in nearby galaxies that are missed by optical surveys as high as (90% confidence). This study suggests that a significant fraction of CCSNe may be heavily obscured by dust and therefore undercounted in the census of nearby CCSNe from optical searches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We measure the proper motion of the pulsar PSR J1745-2900 relative to the Galactic center massive black hole, Sgr A*, using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The pulsar has a transverse velocity of 236 ± 11 km s-1 at position angle 22 ± 2 deg east of north at a projected separation of 0.097 pc from Sgr A*. Given the unknown radial velocity, this transverse velocity measurement does not conclusively prove that the pulsar is bound to Sgr A*; however, the probability of chance alignment is very small. We do show that the velocity and position are consistent with a bound orbit originating in the clockwise disk of massive stars orbiting Sgr A* and a natal velocity kick of 500 km s-1. An origin among the isotropic stellar cluster is possible but less probable. If the pulsar remains radio-bright, multiyear astrometry of PSR J1745-2900 can detect its acceleration and determine the full three-dimensional orbit. We also demonstrate that PSR J1745-2900 exhibits the same angular broadening as Sgr A* over a wavelength range of 3.6 cm to 0.7 cm, further confirming that the two sources share the same interstellar scattering properties. Finally, we place the first limits on the presence of a wavelength-dependent shift in the position of Sgr A*, i.e., the core shift, one of the expected properties of optically thick jet emission. Our results for PSR J1745-2900 support the hypothesis that Galactic center pulsars will originate from the stellar disk and deepen the mystery regarding the small number of detected Galactic center pulsars. Supernova (SN) 2014C is unique: a seemingly typical hydrogen-poor SN that started to interact with a dense, hydrogen-rich circumstellar medium (CSM) ∼100 days post-explosion. The delayed interaction suggests a detached CSM shell, unlike in a typical SN IIn where the CSM is much closer and the interaction commences earlier post-explosion, indicating a different mass-loss history. We present infrared observations of SN 2014C 1–5 yr post-explosion, including uncommon 9.7 μm imaging with COMICS on the Subaru telescope. Spectroscopy shows the intermediate-width He I 1.083 μm emission from the interacting region up to the latest epoch 1639 days post-explosion. The last Spitzer/IRAC photometry at 1920 days confirms ongoing CSM interaction. The 1–10 μm spectral energy distributions (SEDs) can be explained by a dust model with a mixture of 62% carbonaceous and 38% silicate dust, pointing to a chemically inhomogeneous CSM. The inference of silicate dust is the first among interacting SNe. An SED model with purely carbonaceous CSM dust, while possible, requires more than 0.22 M⊙ of dust, an order of magnitude larger than what has been observed in any SNe at this epoch. The light curve beyond 500 days is well fit by an interaction model with a wind-driven CSM and a mass-loss rate of ∼10−3M⊙ yr−1, which presents an additional CSM density component exterior to the constant-density shell reported previously in the literature. SN 2014C could originate in a binary system, similar to RY Scuti, which would explain the observed chemical and density profile inhomogeneity in the CSM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of the first transient survey from the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array (OVRO–LWA) using 31 hr of data, in which we place the most constraining limits on the instantaneous transient surface density at timescales of 13 s to a few minutes and at frequencies below 100 MHz. The OVRO–LWA is a dipole array that images the entire viewable hemisphere with 58 MHz of bandwidth from 27 to 84 MHz at 13 s cadence. No transients are detected above a 6.5σ flux density limit of 10.5 Jy, implying an upper limit to the transient surface density of 2.5 × 10−8 deg−2 at the shortest timescales probed, which is orders of magnitude deeper than has been achieved at sub-100 MHz frequencies and comparable flux densities to date. The nondetection of transients in the OVRO–LWA survey, particularly at minutes-long timescales, allows us to place further constraints on the rate of the potential population of transients uncovered by Stewart et al. From their transient rate, we expect a detection of events, and the probability of our null detection is , ruling out a transient rate >1.4 × 10−4 days−1 deg−2 with 95% confidence at a flux density limit of 18.1 Jy, under the assumption of a flat spectrum and wide bandwidth. We discuss the implications of our nondetection for this population and further constraints that can be made on the source spectral index, intrinsic emission bandwidth, and resulting luminosity distribution. We present a mid-infrared (IR) sample study of nearby ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) using multiepoch observations with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Spitzer/IRAC observations taken after 2014 were obtained as part of the Spitzer Infrared Intensive Transients Survey. Our sample includes 96 ULXs located within 10 Mpc. Of the 96 ULXs, 12 have candidate counterparts consistent with absolute mid-IR magnitudes of supergiants, and 16 counterparts exceeded the mid-IR brightness of single supergiants and are thus more consistent with star clusters or non-ULX background active galactic nuclei. The supergiant candidate counterparts exhibit a bimodal color distribution in a Spitzer/IRAC color–magnitude diagram, where “red” and “‘blue” ULXs fall in IRAC colors [3.6] – [4.5] ∼ 0.7 and [3.6] – [4.5] ∼ 0.0, respectively. The mid-IR colors and absolute magnitudes of four “red” and five “blue” ULXs are consistent with those of supergiant B[e] (sgB[e]) and red supergiant (RSG) stars, respectively. Although “blue,” RSG-like mid-IR ULX counterparts likely host RSG mass donors; we propose that “red” counterparts are ULXs exhibiting the “B[e] phenomenon” rather than hosts of sgB[e] mass donors. We show that the mid-IR excess from the “red” ULXs is likely due to thermal emission from circumstellar or circumbinary dust. Using dust as a probe for total mass, we estimate mass-loss rates of yr−1 in dust-forming outflows of red ULXs. Based on the transient mid-IR behavior and its relatively flat spectral index, α = −0.19 ± 0.1, we suggest that the mid-IR emission from Holmberg IX X-1 originates from a variable jet. We have conducted the most sensitive low-frequency (below 100 MHz) search to date for prompt, low-frequency radio emission associated with short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA). The OVRO-LWA’s nearly full-hemisphere field of view (∼20,000 square degrees) allows us to search for low-frequency (sub-100 MHz) counterparts for a large sample of the subset of GRB events for which prompt radio emission has been predicted. Following the detection of short GRB 170112A by Swift, we used all-sky OVRO-LWA images spanning one hour prior to and two hours following the GRB event to search for a transient source coincident with the position of GRB 170112A. We detect no transient source to within a 3σ flux density limit of 4.5 Jy at 13 s timescales for frequencies spanning 27–84 MHz. We place constraints on a number of models predicting prompt, low-frequency radio emission accompanying short GRBs and their potential binary neutron star merger progenitors, and place an upper limit of Lradio/ Lγ ≲ 3.5 × 10−6 on the fraction of energy released in the prompt radio emission, under the assumptions of negligible scattering of the radio pulse and beaming of emission along the line of sight. These observations serve as a pilot effort for a program targeting a wider sample of both short and long GRBs with the OVRO-LWA, including bursts with confirmed redshift measurements that are critical to placing constraining limits on prompt radio emission models, as well as a program for the follow-up of gravitational wave compact binary coalescence events detected by advanced LIGO and Virgo. We present the discovery by the SPitzer InfraRed Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS) of a likely supernova (SN) in NGC 3556 (M108) at only 8.8 Mpc that was not detected by optical searches. A luminous infrared (IR) transient at M[4.5] = −16.7 mag (Vega), SPIRITS 16tn is coincident with a dust lane in the inclined, star-forming disk of the host. Using observations in the IR, optical, and radio, we attempt to determine the nature of this event. We estimate AV ≈ 8–9 mag of extinction, placing it among the three most highly obscured IR-discovered SNe. The [4.5] light curve declined at a rate of 0.013 mag day−1, and the [3.6]–[4.5] color increased from 0.7 to ≳1.0 mag by 184.7 days post discovery. Optical/IR spectroscopy shows a red continuum but no clearly discernible features, preventing a definitive spectroscopic classification. Radio observations constrain the radio luminosity of SPIRITS 16tn to Lν ≲ 1024 erg s−1 Hz−1 between 3 and 15 GHz, excluding many varieties of core-collapse SNe. An SN Ia is ruled out by the observed IR color and lack of spectroscopic features from Fe-peak elements. SPIRITS 16tn was fainter at [4.5] than typical stripped-envelope SNe by ≈1 mag. Comparison of the spectral energy distribution to SNe II suggests that SPIRITS 16tn was both highly obscured and intrinsically dim, possibly akin to the low-luminosity SN 2005cs. We infer the presence of an IR dust echo powered by an initial peak luminosity of the transient of 5 × 1040 erg s−1 ≲ Lpeak ≲ 4 × 1043 erg s−1, consistent with the observed range for SNe II. This discovery illustrates the power of IR surveys to overcome the compounding effects of visible extinction and optically subluminous events in completing the inventory of nearby SNe. We present an optical and infrared (IR) study of IC 10 X-2, a high-mass X-ray binary in the galaxy IC 10. Previous optical and X-ray studies suggest that X-2 is a Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient: a large-amplitude (factor of ∼100), short-duration (hours to weeks) X-ray outburst on 2010 May 21. We analyze R- and g-band light curves of X-2 from the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory taken between 2013 July 15 and 2017 February 14 that show high-amplitude (≳1 mag), short-duration (≲8 days) flares and dips (≳0.5 mag). Near-IR spectroscopy of X-2 from Palomar/TripleSpec show He i, Paschen-γ, and Paschen-β emission lines with similar shapes and amplitudes as those of luminous blue variables (LBVs) and LBV candidates (LBVc). Mid-IR colors and magnitudes from Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera photometry of X-2 resemble those of known LBV/LBVcs. We suggest that the stellar companion in X-2 is an LBV/LBVc and discuss possible origins of the optical flares. Dips in the optical light curve are indicative of eclipses from optically thick clumps formed in the winds of the stellar counterpart. Given the constraints on the flare duration (0.02–0.8 days) and the time between flares (15.1 ± 7.8 days), we estimate the clump volume filling factor in the stellar winds, fV, to be , which overlaps with values measured from massive star winds. In X-2, we interpret the origin of the optical flares as the accretion of clumps formed in the winds of an LBV/LBVc onto the compact object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present multi-epoch mid-infrared (IR) photometry and the optical discovery observations of the “impostor” supernova (SN) 2010da in NGC 300 using new and archival SpitzerSpace Telescope images and ground-based observatories. The mid-infrared counterpart of SN 2010da was detected as Spitzer Infrared Intensive Transient Survey (SPIRITS) 14bme in the SPIRITS, an ongoing systematic search for IR transients. Before erupting on 2010 May 24, the SN 2010da progenitor exhibited a constant mid-IR flux at 3.6 and only a slight ∼10% decrease at 4.5 μm between 2003 November and 2007 December. A sharp increase in the 3.6 μm flux followed by a rapid decrease measured ∼150 days before and ∼80 days after the initial outburst, respectively, reveal a mid-IR counterpart to the coincident optical and high luminosity X-ray outbursts. At late times, after the outburst (∼2000 days), the 3.6 and 4.5 μm emission increased to over a factor of two times the progenitor flux and is currently observed (as of 2016 Feb) to be fading, but still above the progenitor flux. We attribute the re-brightening mid-IR emission to continued dust production and increasing luminosity of the surviving system associated with SN 2010da. We analyze the evolution of the dust temperature (Td ∼ 700–1000 K), mass (Md ∼ 0.5–3.8 × 10−7M⊙), luminosity (LIR ∼ 1.3–3.5 × 104L⊙), and the equilibrium temperature radius (Req ∼ 6.4–12.2 au) in order to resolve the nature of SN 2010da. We address the leading interpretation of SN 2010da as an eruption from a luminous blue variable high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) system. We propose that SN 2010da is instead a supergiant (sg)B[e]-HMXB based on similar luminosities and dust masses exhibited by two other known sgB[e]-HMXB systems. Additionally, the SN 2010da progenitor occupies a similar region on a mid-IR color–magnitude diagram (CMD) with known sgB[e] stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The lower limit estimated for the orbital eccentricity of the sgB[e]-HMXB (e > 0.82) from X-ray luminosity measurements is high compared to known sgHMXBs and supports the claim that SN 2010da may be associated with a newly formed HMXB system. Heartbeat stars (HB stars) are a class of eccentric binary stars with close periastron passages. The characteristic photometric HB signal evident in their light curves is produced by a combination of tidal distortion, heating, and Doppler boosting near orbital periastron. Many HB stars continue to oscillate after periastron and along the entire orbit, indicative of the tidal excitation of oscillation modes within one or both stars. These systems are among the most eccentric binaries known, and they constitute astrophysical laboratories for the study of tidal effects. We have undertaken a radial velocity (RV) monitoring campaign of Kepler HB stars in order to measure their orbits. We present our first results here, including a sample of 22 Kepler HB systems, where for 19 of them we obtained the Keplerian orbit and for 3 other systems we did not detect a statistically significant RV variability. Results presented here are based on 218 spectra obtained with the Keck/HIRES spectrograph during the 2015 Kepler observing season, and they have allowed us to obtain the largest sample of HB stars with orbits measured using a single instrument, which roughly doubles the number of HB stars with an RV measured orbit. The 19 systems measured here have orbital periods from 7 to 90 days and eccentricities from 0.2 to 0.9. We show that HB stars draw the upper envelope of the eccentricity–period distribution. Therefore, HB stars likely represent a population of stars currently undergoing high eccentricity migration via tidal orbital circularization, and they will allow for new tests of high eccentricity migration theories. A correction to the article "The Proper Motion of the Galactic Center Pulsar Relative to Sagittarius A*," by Geoffrey C. Bower and colleagues in a 2015 issue, is presented.

Most millisecond pulsars, like essentially all other radio pulsars, show timing errors well in excess of what is expected from additive radiometer noise alone. We show that changes in amplitude, shape, and pulse phase for the millisecond pulsar J1713+0747 cause this excess error. These changes appear to be uncorrelated from one pulse period to the next. The resulting time of arrival (TOA) variations are correlated across a wide frequency range and is observed with different backend processors on different days, confirming that they are intrinsic in origin and not an instrumental effect or caused by strongly frequency-dependent interstellar scattering. Centroids of single pulses show an rms phase variation ≈40 μs, which dominates the timing error and is the same phase jitter phenomenon long known in slower spinning, canonical pulsars. We show that the amplitude modulations of single pulses are modestly correlated with their arrival time fluctuations. We also demonstrate that single-pulse variations are completely consistent with arrival time variations of pulse profiles obtained by integrating N pulses such that the arrival-time error decreases proportional to . We investigate methods for correcting TOAs for these pulse-shape changes, including multi-component TOA fitting and principal component analysis. These techniques are not found to improve the timing precision of the observations. We conclude that when pulse-shape changes dominate timing errors, the timing precision of PSR J1713+0747 can be only improved by averaging over a larger number of pulses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We perform a suite of cosmological simulations in the ΛCDM paradigm of the formation of the first structures in the universe prior to astrophysical reheating and reionization (15 ≲ z < 200). These are the first simulations initialized in a manner that self-consistently accounts for the impact of pressure on the rate of growth of modes, temperature fluctuations in the gas, and the dark matter-baryon supersonic velocity difference. Even with these improvements, these are still difficult times to simulate accurately as the Jeans length of the cold intergalactic gas must be resolved while also capturing a representative sample of the universe. We explore the box size and resolution requirements to meet these competing objectives. Our simulations support the finding of recent studies that the dark matter-baryon velocity difference has a surprisingly large impact on the accretion of gas onto the first star-forming minihalos (which have masses of ∼106M☼). In fact, the halo gas is often significantly downwind of such halos and with lower densities in the simulations in which the baryons have a bulk flow with respect to the dark matter, modulating the formation of the first stars by the local value of this velocity difference. We also show that dynamical friction plays an important role in the nonlinear evolution of the dark matter-baryon differential velocity, acting to erase this velocity difference quickly in overdense gas, as well as sourcing visually apparent bow shocks and Mach cones throughout the universe. We use simulations with both the GADGET and Enzo cosmological codes to test the robustness of these conclusions. The comparison of these codes' simulations also provides a relatively controlled test of these codes themselves, allowing us to quantify some of the tradeoffs between the algorithms. For example, we find that particle coupling in GADGET between the gas and dark matter particles results in spurious growth that mimics nonlinear growth in the matter power spectrum for standard initial setups. This coupling is alleviated by using adaptive gravitational softening for the gas. In a companion paper, we use the simulations presented here to make detailed estimates for the impact of the dark matter-baryon velocity differential on redshifted 21 cm radiation. Recently, Tseliakhovich & Hirata showed that during the cosmic Dark Ages the baryons were typically moving supersonically with respect to the dark matter with a spatially variable Mach number. Such supersonic motion may source shocks that inhomogeneously heat the universe. This motion may also suppress star formation in the first halos. Even a small amount of coupling of the 21 cm signal to this motion has the potential to vastly enhance the 21 cm brightness temperature fluctuations at 15 ≲ z ≲ 40, as well as to imprint distinctive acoustic oscillations in this signal. We present estimates for the size of this coupling, which we calibrate with a suite of cosmological simulations of the high-redshift universe using the GADGET and Enzo codes. Our simulations, discussed in detail in a companion paper, are initialized to self-consistently account for gas pressure and the dark matter-baryon relative velocity, vbc (in contrast to prior simulations). We find that the supersonic velocity difference dramatically suppresses structure formation on 10-100 comoving kpc scales, it sources shocks throughout the universe, and it impacts the accretion of gas onto the first star-forming minihalos (even for halo masses as large as 107M☼). However, prior to reheating by astrophysical sources, we find that the vbc-sourced temperature fluctuations can contribute only as much as ≈10% of the fluctuations in the 21 cm signal. We do find that vbc in certain scenarios could source an component in the power spectrum of the 21 cm background on observable scales via the X-ray (but not ultraviolet) backgrounds produced once the first stars formed. In a scenario in which ∼106M☼ minihalos reheated the universe via their X-ray backgrounds, we find that the pre-reionization 21 cm signal would be larger than previously anticipated and exhibit more significant acoustic features. Such features would be a direct probe of the first stars and black holes. In addition, we show that structure formation shocks are unable to heat the universe sufficiently to erase a strong 21 cm absorption trough at z ∼ 20 that is found in most models of the sky-averaged 21 cm intensity.
