The gas dissipation from a protoplanetary disk is one of the key processes affecting planet formation, and it is widely accepted that it happens on timescales of a few million years for disks around single stars. In recent years, several protoplanetary disks have been discovered in multiple-star systems, and despite the complex environment in which they find themselves, some of them seem to be quite old, a situation that may favor planet formation. A clear example of this is the disk around HD 98800 B, a binary in a hierarchical quadruple stellar system, which at an ∼10 Myr age seems to still be holding significant amounts of gas. Here we present a 1D+1D model to compute the vertical structure and gas evolution of circumbinary disks in hierarchical triple-star systems considering different stellar and disk parameters. We show that tidal torques due to the inner binary, together with the truncation of the disk due to the external companion, strongly reduce the viscous accretion and expansion of the disk. Even allowing viscous accretion by tidal streams, disks in these kind of environments can survive for more than 10 Myr, depending on their properties, with photoevaporation being the main gas dissipation mechanism. We particularly apply our model to the circumbinary disk around HD 98800 B and confirm that its longevity, along with the current nonexistence of a disk around the companion binary HD 98800 A, can be explained with our model and by this mechanism. We describe a revised procedure for the numerical simulation of planetary nebulae luminosity functions (PNLFs), improving on previous work. The procedure is now based on new H-burning post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) evolutionary tracks. For a given stellar mass, the new central stars are more luminous and evolve faster. We have slightly changed the distribution of the [O iii] 5007 intensities relative to those of and the generation of absorbing factors, while still basing their numerical modeling on empirical information extracted from studies of galactic planetary nebulae (PNs) and their central stars. We argue that the assumption of PNs being completely optically thick to H-ionizing photons leads to conflicts with observations and show that to account for optically thin PNs is necessary. We then use the new simulations to estimate a maximum final mass, clarifying its meaning, and discuss the effect of internal dust extinction as a possible way of explaining the persistent discrepancy between PNLFs and surface brightness fluctuation distances. By adjusting the range of minimum to maximum final mass, it is also possible to explain the observed variety of PNLF shapes at intermediate magnitudes. We present a flux-resolved X-ray analysis of the dwarf Seyfert 1.8 galaxy NGC 4395, based on three archival XMM-Newton and one archival NuSTAR observations. The source is known to harbor a low-mass black hole () and shows strong variability in the full X-ray range during these observations. We model the flux-resolved spectra of the source assuming three absorbing layers: neutral, mildly ionized, and highly ionized (, , and 3.8 × 1022 cm−2, respectively). The source also shows intrinsic variability by a factor of ∼3 on short timescales, which is due to changes in the nuclear flux, assumed to be a power law (Γ = 1.6–1.67). Our results show a positive correlation between the intrinsic flux and the absorbers’ ionization parameter. The covering fraction of the neutral absorber varies during the first XMM-Newton observation, which could explain the pronounced soft X-ray variability. However, the source remains fully covered by this layer during the other two observations, largely suppressing the soft X-ray variability. This suggests an inhomogeneous and layered structure in the broad-line region. We also find a difference in the characteristic timescale of the power spectra between different energy ranges and observations. We finally show simulated spectra with XRISM, eXTP, and Athena, which will allow us to characterize the different absorbers, study their dynamics, and will help us identify their locations and sizes. We present an analysis of the time-averaged spectrum of the Seyfert-2 active galaxy NGC 4388, obtained by NICER. The intrinsic strength of the reflection spectrum in NGC 4388, the large collecting area and favorable passband of NICER, and a net exposure of 105.6 ks yielded an exceptionally sensitive spectrum. Using two independent families of models, the intrinsic spectrum from the central engine is found to be highly obscured but not Compton-thick. Enforcing physical self-consistency within each model, the independent treatments give formally consistent results: or . Past measurements made with Suzaku and XMM-Newton are in broad agreement with these column density values. A more recent measurement with NuSTAR (in late 2013) recorded a column density about twice as large; the robustness of this variability is reinforced by the use of consistent models and procedures. The neutral Fe Kα line in the NICER spectrum is nominally resolved and consistent with an origin in the optical broad-line region). The data also require ionized absorption in the Fe K band, similar to the “warm absorbers” detected in Seyfert-1 active galactic nuclei. The low-energy spectrum is consistent with a set of ionized plasma components. NGC 4151 is the brightest Seyfert 1 nucleus in X-rays. It was the first object to show short time delays in the Fe K band, which were attributed to relativistic reverberation, providing a new tool for probing regions at the black hole scale. Here we report the results of a large XMM-Newton campaign in 2015 to study these short delays further. Analyzing high-quality data that span timescales between hours and decades, we find that neutral and ionized absorption contributes significantly to the spectral shape. Accounting for their effects, we find no evidence for a relativistic reflection component, contrary to early work. Energy-dependent lags are significantly measured in the new data, but with an energy profile that does not resemble a broad iron line, in contrast to the old data. The complex lag-energy spectra, along with the lack of strong evidence for a relativistic spectral component, suggest that the energy-dependent lags are produced by absorption effects. The long-term spectral variations provide new details on the variability of the narrow Fe Kα line. We find that its variations are correlated with, and delayed with respect to, the primary X-ray continuum. We measure a delay of days, implying an origin in the inner broad-line region (BLR). The delay is half the Hβ line delay, suggesting a geometry that differs slightly from the optical BLR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report on X-ray and radio observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 1543−624 taken in August 2017 during an enhanced accretion episode. We obtained Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) monitoring of the source over a ∼10 day period during which target-of-opportunity observations were also conducted with Swift, INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Emission lines were measured in the NICER X-ray spectrum at ∼0.64 keV and ∼6.4 keV that correspond to O and Fe, respectively. By modeling these line components, we are able to track changes in the accretion disk throughout this period. The innermost accretion flow appears to move inwards from hundreds of gravitational radii (Rg = GM/c2) at the beginning of the outburst to <8.7 Rg at peak intensity. We do not detect the source in radio, but are able to place a 3σ upper limit on the flux density at 27 μJy beam−1. Comparing the radio and X-ray luminosities, we find that the source lies significantly away from the range typical of black holes in the – plane, suggesting a neutron star primary. This adds to the evidence that neutron stars (NSs) do not follow a single track in the – plane, limiting its use in distinguishing between different classes of NSs based on radio and X-ray observations alone. We present Gemini-South observations of nine faint and extended planetary nebulae (PNe). Using direct images taken with the spectrograph Gemini-South multi-object spectrograph (GMOS), we built the versus diagrams of the stars in the observed areas which allowed us to consider their geometrical positions and identify the probable central stars of the nebulae. Our stellar spectra of seven stars, also taken with GMOS, indicate that four (and probably two more) objects are white dwarfs of the DAO subtype. Moreover, the white dwarf status of the four stars is confirmed by the parameters Teff and log g derived with the help of theoretical stellar spectra. Given this evidence, we propose that these hot stars are the central ionizing sources of the nebulae. With this work we hope to help improve the current scarce statistics on central white dwarfs in PNe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NGC 4051 is one of the most variable and X-ray bright Seyfert galaxies. During 2009, NGC 4051 was caught at its lowest state ever observed by XMM-Newton. The low source continuum emission allows a clear measurement of the He-like emission lines of and O+6. The exceptionally high intercombination line flux is a direct measurement of either a high density or a UV irradiated photoionized plasma. Either way, this provides an unambiguous distance diagnostic. We find that the line emitting region has a density of ∼3 × 1010 cm−3 and a distance of a few 1015 cm from the continuum source, placing it within the UV-optical broad line region of NGC 4051. Both N+5 and O+6 independently result in similar measurements for density and distance. In addition, we find the kinematics of the broad O+7 Lyα match those of the He+1λ4686 Å line, which is associated with the NGC 4051 broad line region. We report results from joint Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, Swift, and XMM-Newton observations of the newly discovered black hole X-ray binary candidate Swift J1658.2–4242 in the intermediate state. We observe a peculiar event in this source, with its X-ray flux rapidly decreasing by ∼45% in ∼40 s, accompanied by only subtle changes in the shape of the broadband X-ray spectrum. In addition, we find a sudden turn-on of a transient quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) with a frequency of 6–7 Hz around the time of the flux change, and the total fractional rms amplitude of the power spectrum increases from ∼2% to ∼10%. The X-ray spectral and timing analyses indicate that the flux decrease is driven by intrinsic changes in the accretion flow around the black hole, rather than intervening material along the line of sight. In addition, we do not significantly detect any relativistic disk reflection component, indicating it is much weaker than previously observed while the source was in the bright hard state. We propose accretion disk instabilities triggered at a large disk radius as the origin of the fast transition in spectral and timing properties, and discuss possible causes of the unusual properties observed in Swift J1658.2–4242. The prompt flux variation detected along with the emergence of a QPO makes the event an interesting case for investigating QPO mechanisms in black hole X-ray binaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Current measurements show that the observed fraction of Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGN) is smaller than the expected values needed to explain the cosmic X-ray background. Prior fits to the X-ray spectrum of the nearby Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 5347 (z = 0.00792, D = 35.5 Mpc ) have alternately suggested a CT and Compton-thin source. Combining archival data from Suzaku, Chandra, and—most importantly—new data from NuSTAR, and using three distinct families of models, we show that NGC 5347 is an obscured CTAGN (NH > 2.23 × 1024 cm−2). Its 2–30 keV spectrum is dominated by reprocessed emission from distant material, characterized by a strong Fe Kα line and a Compton hump. We found a large equivalent width of the Fe Kα line (EW = 2.3 ± 0.3 keV) and a high intrinsic-to-observed flux ratio (∼100). All of these observations are typical for bona fide CTAGN. We estimate a bolometric luminosity of Lbol ≃ 0.014 ± 0.005 LEdd.. The Chandra image of NGC 5347 reveals the presence of extended emission dominating the soft X-ray spectrum (E < 2 keV), which coincides with the [O iii] emission detected in Hubble Space Telescope images. Comparison to other CTAGN suggests that NGC 5347 is broadly consistent with the average properties of this source class. We simulated XRISM and Athena/X-IFU spectra of the source, showing the potential of these future missions in identifying CTAGN in the soft X-rays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atoll sources are accreting neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries. We present a spectral analysis of four persistent atoll sources (GX 3+1, 4U 1702−429, 4U 0614+091, and 4U 1746−371) observed for ∼20 ks each with NuSTAR to determine the extent of the inner accretion disk. These sources range from an apparent luminosity of 0.006–0.11 of the Eddington limit (assuming the empirical limit of 3.8 × 1038 erg s−1). Broad Fe emission features shaped by Doppler and relativistic effects close to the NS were firmly detected in three of these sources. The position of the disk appears to be close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) in each case. For GX 3+1, we determine (90% confidence level) and an inclination of 27°–31°. For 4U 1702−429, we find a and inclination of 53°–64°. For 4U 0614+091, the disk has a position of and inclination of 50°–62°. If the disk does not extend to the innermost stable circular orbit, we can place conservative limits on the magnetic field strength in these systems in the event that the disk is truncated at the Alfvén radius. This provides the limit at the poles of B ≤ 6.7 × 108 G, 3.3 × 108 G, and 14.5 × 108 G for GX 3+1, 4U 1702−429, and 4U 0614+091, respectively. For 4U 1746−371, we argue that the most plausible explanation for the lack of reflection features is a combination of source geometry and strong Comptonization. We present an analysis of the fundamental plane of black hole accretion, an empirical correlation of the mass of a black hole (M), its 5 GHz radio continuum luminosity (νLν), and its 2–10 keV X-ray power-law continuum luminosity (LX). We compile a sample of black holes with primary, direct black hole-mass measurements that also have sensitive, high-spatial-resolution radio and X-ray data. Taking into account a number of systematic sources of uncertainty and their correlations with the measurements, we use Markov chain Monte Carlo methods to fit a mass-predictor function of the form + . Our best-fit results are μ0 = 0.55 ± 0.22, ξμR = 1.09 ± 0.10, and with the natural logarithm of the Gaussian intrinsic scatter in the log-mass direction . This result is a significant improvement over our earlier mass scaling result because of the increase in active galactic nuclei sample size (from 18 to 30), improvement in our X-ray binary sample selection, better identification of Seyferts, and improvements in our analysis that takes into account systematic uncertainties and correlated uncertainties. Because of these significant improvements, we are able to consider potential influences on our sample by including all sources with compact radio and X-ray emission but ultimately conclude that the fundamental plane can empirically describe all such sources. We report the results of long-term simultaneous X-ray and UV monitoring of the nearby (z = 0.03145) Seyfert 1.5 galaxy Mrk 817 using the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory XRT and UVOT. Prior work has revealed that the X-ray flux from Mrk 817 has increased by a factor of 40 over the last 40 yr, whereas the UV emission has changed by a factor of 2.3. The X-ray emission of Mrk 817 now compares to some of the brightest Seyferts, but it has been poorly studied in comparison. We find that the X-ray (0.3–10.0 keV) and the UVM2 (roughly 2000–2500 Å) fluxes have fractional variability amplitudes of 0.35 and 0.18, respectively, over the entire monitoring period (2017 January 2 to 2018 April 20). A cross-correlation analysis is performed on the X-ray (0.3–10.0 keV) and UVM2 light curves over the entire monitoring period, a period of less frequent monitoring (2017 January 2–December 11), and a period of more frequent monitoring (2018 January 12–April 20). The analysis reveals no significant correlation between the two at any given lag for all monitoring periods. Especially given that reverberation studies have found significant lags between optical/UV continuum bands and broad optical lines in Mrk 817, the lack of a significant X-ray–UV correlation may point to additional complexities in the inner or intermediate disk. Mechanical (e.g., a funnel in the inner disk) and/or relativistic beaming of the X-ray emission could potentially explain the lack of a correlation. Alternatively, scattering in an equatorial wind could also diminish the ability of more isotropic X-ray emission to heat the disk itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the most luminous class of neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries, known as Z sources, have been well studied, their behavior is not fully understood. In particular, what causes these sources to trace out the characteristic Z-shaped pattern on color–color or hardness–intensity diagrams (HIDs) is not well known. By studying the physical properties of the different spectral states of these sources, we may better understand such variability. With that goal in mind, we present a recent NuSTAR observation of the Z source GX 349+2, which spans approximately 2 days and covers all its spectral states. By creating an HID we were able to extract five spectra and trace the change in spectral parameters throughout the Z-track. GX 349+2 shows a strong, broad Fe Kα line in all states, regardless of the continuum model used. Through modeling of the reflection spectrum and Fe Kα line we find that in most states the inner disk radius is consistent with remaining unchanged at an average radius of 17.5 Rg or 36.4 km for a canonical 1.4 M⊙ NS. During the brightest flaring branch, however, the inner disk radius from reflection is not well constrained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an analysis of the narrow Fe Kα line in Chandra/HETGS observations of the Seyfert active galactic nucleus (AGN) NGC 4151. The sensitivity and resolution afforded by the gratings reveal asymmetry in this line. Models including weak Doppler boosting, gravitational redshifts, and scattering are generally preferred over Gaussians at the 5σ level of confidence, and generally measure radii consistent with . Separate fits to “high/unobscured” and “low/obscured” phases reveal that the line originates at smaller radii in high-flux states; model-independent tests indicate that this effect is significant at the 4–5σ level. Some models and Δt ≃ 2 × 104 s variations in line flux suggest that the narrow Fe Kα line may originate at radii as small as in high-flux states. These results indicate that the narrow Fe Kα line in NGC 4151 is primarily excited in the innermost part of the optical broad line region (BLR), or X-ray BLR. Alternatively, a warp could provide the solid angle needed to enhance Fe Kα line emission from intermediate radii, and might resolve an apparent discrepancy in the inclination of the innermost and outer disk in NGC 4151. Both warps and the BLR may originate through radiation pressure, so these explanations may be linked. We discuss our results in detail, and consider the potential for future observations with Chandra, XARM, and ATHENA to measure black hole masses and to study the intermediate disk in AGNs using narrow Fe Kα emission lines. We present a spectral and timing analysis of the newly reported Galactic X-ray transient Swift J1658.2–4242 observed by Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Swift. The broadband X-ray continuum is typical of a black hole binary in the bright hard state, with a photon index of Γ = 1.63 ± 0.02 and a low coronal temperature of kTe = 22 ± 1 keV, corresponding to a low spectral cutoff well constrained by NuSTAR. Spectral modeling of the relativistic disk reflection features, consisting of a broad Fe Kα line and the Compton reflection hump, reveals that the black hole is rapidly spinning with the spin parameter of a* > 0.96, and the inner accretion disk is viewed at a high inclination angle of (statistical errors, 90% confidence). The high inclination is independently confirmed by dips in the light curves, which can be explained by absorbing material located near the disk plane temporarily obscuring the central region. In addition, we detect an absorption line in the NuSTAR spectra centered at keV. If associated with ionized Fe K absorption lines, this provides evidence for the presence of outflowing material in the low/hard state of a black hole binary candidate. A timing analysis shows the presence of a type-C quasi-periodic oscillation in the power spectrum, with the frequency increasing from ∼0.14 to ∼0.21 Hz during the single NuSTAR exposure. Our analysis reveals that Swift J1658.2–4242 displays characteristics typical for a black hole binary that is viewed at a high inclination angle, making it a good system for studying the accretion geometry in black hole binaries. We report the discovery with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) of mHz X-ray brightness oscillations from the “clocked burster” GS 1826−238. NICER observed the source in the periods 2017 June 20–29, July 11–13, and September 9–15, for a total useful exposure of 34 ks. Two consecutive dwells obtained on 2017 September 9 revealed highly significant oscillations at a frequency of 8 mHz. The fractional, sinusoidal modulation amplitude increases from 0.7% at 1 keV to ≈2% at 6 keV. Similar oscillations were also detected at lower significance in three additional dwells. The oscillation frequency and amplitude are consistent with those of mHz QPOs reported in other accreting neutron star systems. A thermonuclear X-ray burst was also observed on 2017 June 22. The burst properties and X-ray colors are both consistent with GS 1826 being in a soft spectral state during these observations, findings that are confirmed by ongoing monitoring with MAXI and SWIFT-BAT. Assuming that the mHz oscillations are associated with blackbody emission from the neutron star surface, modeling of the phase-resolved spectra shows that the oscillation is consistent with being produced by modulation of the temperature component of this emission. In this interpretation, the blackbody normalization, proportional to the emitting surface area, is consistent with being constant through the oscillation cycle. We place the observations in the context of the current theory of marginally stable burning and briefly discuss the potential for constraining neutron star properties using mHz oscillations. Here we study a 1–200 keV energy spectrum of the black hole binary Cygnus X-1 taken with NuSTAR and Suzaku. This is the first report of a NuSTAR observation of Cyg X-1 in the intermediate state, and the observation was taken during the part of the binary orbit where absorption due to the companion’s stellar wind is minimal. The spectrum includes a multi-temperature thermal disk component, a cutoff power-law component, and relativistic and nonrelativistic reflection components. Our initial fits with publicly available constant density reflection models (relxill and reflionx) lead to extremely high iron abundances (>9.96 and times solar, respectively). Although supersolar iron abundances have been reported previously for Cyg X-1, our measurements are much higher and such variability is almost certainly unphysical. Using a new version of reflionx that we modified to make the electron density a free parameter, we obtain better fits to the spectrum even with solar iron abundances. We report on how the higher density ( cm−3) impacts other parameters such as the inner radius and inclination of the disk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present NuSTAR observations of the luminous neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB) and Z source GX 5−1. During our three observations made with separations of roughly two days, the source traced out an almost complete Z track. We extract spectra from the various branches and fit them with a continuum model that has been successfully applied to other Z sources. Surprisingly, and unlike most of the (luminous) NS-LMXBs observed with NuSTAR, we do not find evidence for reflection features in any of the spectra of GX 5−1. We discuss several possible explanations for the absence of reflection features. Based on a comparison with other accreting neutron star systems, and given the high luminosity of GX 5−1 (∼1.6–2.3 times the Eddington luminosity, for a distance of 9 kpc), we consider a highly ionized disk the most likely explanation for the absence of reflection features in GX 5−1. We report deep spectroscopy of 10 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) using the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). Our targets reside in different regions of M31, including halo streams and the dwarf satellite M32, and kinematically deviate from the extended disk. The temperature-sensitive [O iii] λ4363 line is observed in all PNe. For four PNe, the GTC spectra extend beyond 1 μm, enabling the explicit detection of the [S iii] λ6312 and λλ9069, 9531 lines and thus determination of the [S iii] temperature. Abundance ratios are derived and generally consistent with AGB model predictions. Our PNe probably all evolved from low-mass (<2 M☉) stars, as analyzed with the most up-to-date post-AGB evolutionary models, and their main-sequence ages are mostly ∼2–5 Gyr. Compared to the underlying, smooth, metal-poor halo of M31, our targets are uniformly metal rich ([O/H] ≳ −0.4), and seem to resemble the younger population in the stream. We thus speculate that our halo PNe formed in the Giant Stream’s progenitor through extended star formation. Alternatively, they might have formed from the same metal-rich gas as did the outer-disk PNe but were displaced into their present locations as a result of galactic interactions. These interpretations are, although speculative, qualitatively in line with the current picture, as inferred from previous wide-field photometric surveys, that M31's halo is the result of complex interactions and merger processes. The behavior of the N/O of the combined sample of the outer-disk and our halo/substructure PNe signifies that hot bottom burning might actually occur at <3 M☉ but careful assessment is needed. We present a spectral and timing study of the NuSTAR and Swift observations of the black hole candidate IGR J17091–3624 in the hard state during its outburst in 2016. Disk reflection is detected in each of the NuSTAR spectra taken in three epochs. Fitting with relativistic reflection models reveals that the accretion disk is truncated during all epochs with , with the data favoring a low disk inclination of ∼30°–40°. The steepening of the continuum spectra between epochs is accompanied by a decrease in the high energy cutoff: the electron temperature drops from ∼64 to ∼26 keV, changing systematically with the source flux. We detect type-C QPOs in the power spectra with frequency varying between 0.131 and 0.327 Hz. In addition, a secondary peak is found in the power spectra centered at about 2.3 times the QPO frequency during all three epochs. The nature of this secondary frequency is uncertain; however, a non-harmonic origin is favored. We investigate the evolution of the timing and spectral properties during the rising phase of the outburst and discuss their physical implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We perform a reflection study on a new observation of the neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary Aquila X-1 taken with NuSTAR during the 2016 August outburst and compare with the 2014 July outburst. The source was captured at ∼32% LEdd, which is over four times more luminous than the previous observation during the 2014 outburst. Both observations exhibit a broadened Fe line profile. Through reflection modeling, we determine that the inner disk is truncated (where Rg = GM/c2) and (errors quoted at the 90% confidence level). Fiducial NS parameters (MNS = 1.4 M⊙, RNS = 10 km) give a stellar radius of RNS = 4.85 Rg; our measurements rule out a disk extending to that radius at more than the 6σ level of confidence. We are able to place an upper limit on the magnetic field strength of B ≤ 3.0–4.5 × 109 G at the magnetic poles, assuming that the disk is truncated at the magnetospheric radius in each case. This is consistent with previous estimates of the magnetic field strength for Aquila X-1. However, if the magnetosphere is not responsible for truncating the disk prior to the NS surface, we estimate a boundary layer with a maximum extent of and . Additionally, we compare the magnetic field strength inferred from the Fe line profile of Aquila X-1 and other NS low-mass X-ray binaries to known accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars. We present first results from a series of NuSTAR observations of the black hole X-ray binary V404 Cyg obtained during its summer 2015 outburst, primarily focusing on observations during the height of this outburst activity. The NuSTAR data show extreme variability in both the flux and spectral properties of the source. This is partly driven by strong and variable line-of-sight absorption, similar to previous outbursts. The latter stages of this observation are dominated by strong flares, reaching luminosities close to Eddington. During these flares, the central source appears to be relatively unobscured and the data show clear evidence for a strong contribution from relativistic reflection, providing a means to probe the geometry of the innermost accretion flow. Based on the flare properties, analogies with other Galactic black hole binaries, and also the simultaneous onset of radio activity, we argue that this intense X-ray flaring is related to transient jet activity during which the ejected plasma is the primary source of illumination for the accretion disk. If this is the case, then our reflection modeling implies that these jets are launched in close proximity to the black hole (as close as a few gravitational radii), consistent with expectations for jet launching models that tap either the spin of the central black hole, or the very innermost accretion disk. Our analysis also allows us to place the first constraints on the black hole spin for this source, which we find to be (99% statistical uncertainty, based on an idealized lamp-post geometry). We present results from four new broadband X-ray observations of the extreme ultraluminous X-ray source Holmberg IX X-1 ( erg s−1), performed by Suzaku and NuSTAR in coordination. Combined with the archival data, we now have broadband observations of this remarkable source from six separate epochs. Two of these new observations probe lower fluxes than seen previously, allowing us to extend our knowledge of the broadband spectral variability exhibited. The spectra are well fit by two thermal blackbody components that dominate the emission below 10 keV, as well as a steep () power-law tail that dominates above ∼15 keV. Remarkably, while the 0.3–10.0 keV flux varies by a factor of ∼3 between all these epochs, the 15–40 keV flux varies by only ∼20%. Although the spectral variability is strongest in the ∼1–10 keV band, both of the thermal components are required to vary when all epochs are considered. We also revisit the search for iron absorption features by leveraging the high-energy NuSTAR data to improve our sensitivity to extreme velocity outflows in light of the ultra-fast outflow recently detected in NGC 1313 X-1. Iron absorption from a similar outflow along our line of sight can be ruled out in this case. We discuss these results in the context of super-Eddington accretion models that invoke a funnel-like geometry for the inner flow, and propose a scenario in which we have an almost face-on view of a funnel that expands to larger radii with increasing flux, resulting in an increasing degree of geometrical collimation for the emission from intermediate-temperature regions. We perform the first reflection study of the soft X-ray transient and Type 1 burst source XTE J1709-267 using NuSTAR observations during its 2016 June outburst. There was an increase in flux near the end of the observations, which corresponds to an increase from ∼0.04 LEdd to ∼0.06 LEdd assuming a distance of 8.5 kpc. We have separately examined spectra from the low- and high-flux intervals, which are soft and show evidence of a broad Fe K line. Fits to these intervals with relativistic disk reflection models have revealed an inner-disk radius of (where ) for the low-flux spectrum and for the high-flux spectrum at the 90% confidence level. The disk is likely truncated by a boundary layer surrounding the neutron star (NS) or the magnetosphere. Based on the measured luminosity and the accretion efficiency for a disk around an NS, we estimate that the theoretically expected size for the boundary layer would be from the NS’s surface, which can be increased by spin or viscosity effects. Another plausible scenario is that the disk could be truncated by the magnetosphere. We place a conservative upper limit on the strength of the magnetic field at the poles (assuming and ) of G, though X-ray pulsations have not been detected from this source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present NuSTAR observations of neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries: 4U 1636-53, GX 17+2, and 4U 1705-44. We observed 4U 1636-53 in the hard state, with an Eddington fraction, , of 0.01; GX 17+2 and 4U 1705-44 were in the soft state with fractions of 0.57 and 0.10, respectively. Each spectrum shows evidence for a relativistically broadened Fe Kα line. Through accretion disk reflection modeling, we constrain the radius of the inner disk in 4U 1636-53 to be ISCO (innermost stable circular orbit), assuming a dimensionless spin parameter , and ISCO for (errors quoted at 1σ). This value proves to be model independent. For and , for example, 1.08 ± 0.06 ISCO translates to a physical radius of km, and the NS would have to be smaller than this radius (other outcomes are possible for allowed spin parameters and masses). For GX 17+2, ISCO for and ISCO for . For and , ISCO translates to km. The inner accretion disk in 4U 1705-44 may be truncated just above the stellar surface, perhaps by a boundary layer or magnetosphere; reflection models give a radius of 1.46–1.64 ISCO for and 1.69–1.93 ISCO for . We discuss the implications our results may have on the equation of state of ultradense, cold matter and our understanding of the innermost accretion flow onto NSs with low surface magnetic fields, and systematic errors related to the reflection models and spacetime metric around less idealized NSs. MCG-5-23-16 was targeted in early 2015 with a half mega-second observing campaign using NuSTAR. Here we present the spectral analysis of these data sets along with an earlier observation and study the relativistic reflection and the primary coronal source. The data show strong reflection features in the form of both narrow and broad iron lines plus a Compton reflection hump. A cutoff energy is significantly detected in all exposures. The shape of the reflection spectrum does not change in the two years spanned by the observations, suggesting a stable geometry. A strong positive correlation is found between the cutoff energy and both the hard X-ray flux and spectral index. The measurements imply that the coronal plasma is not at the runaway electron–positron pair limit, and instead contains mostly electrons. The observed variability in the coronal properties is driven by a variable optical depth. A constant heating-to-cooling ratio is measured, implying that there is a feedback mechanism in which a significant fraction of the photons cooling the corona are due to reprocessed hard X-rays. Disk and wind signatures are seen in the soft state of Galactic black holes, while the jet is seen in the hard state. Here we study the disk–wind connection in the ρ class of variability in GRS 1915+105 using a joint NuSTAR–Chandra observation. The source shows 50 s limit cycle oscillations. By including new information provided by the reflection spectrum and using phase-resolved spectroscopy, we find that the change in the inner disk inferred from the blackbody emission is not matched by reflection measurements. The latter is almost constant, independent of the continuum model. The two radii are comparable only if the disk temperature color correction factor changes, an effect that could be due to the changing opacity of the disk caused by changes in metal abundances. The disk inclination is similar to that inferred from the jet axis, and oscillates by ∼10°. The simultaneous Chandra data show the presence of two wind components with velocities between 500 and 5000 km s−1, and possibly two more with velocities reaching 20,000 km s−1 (∼0.06 c). The column densities are ∼5 × 1022 cm−2. An upper limit to the wind response time of 2 s is measured, implying a launch radius of <6 × 1010 cm. The changes in wind velocity and absorbed flux require the geometry of the wind to change during the oscillations, constraining the wind to be launched from a distance of 290–1300 rg from the black hole. Crustal cooling of accretion-heated neutron stars provides insight into the stellar interior of neutron stars. The neutron star X-ray transient, KS 1731−260, was in outburst for 12.5 years before returning to quiescence in 2001. We have monitored the cooling of this source since then through Chandra and XMM-Newton observations. Here we present a 150 ks Chandra observation of KS 1731−260 taken in 2015 August, about 14.5 years into quiescence and 6 years after the previous observation. We find that the neutron star surface temperature is consistent with the previous observation, suggesting that crustal cooling has likely stopped and the crust has reached thermal equilibrium with the core. Using a theoretical crust thermal evolution code, we fit the observed cooling curves and constrain the core temperature (Tc = 9.35 ± 0.25 × 107 K), composition (Q ), and level of extra shallow heating required (Qsh = 1.36 ± 0.18 MeV/nucleon). We find that the presence of a low thermal conductivity layer, as expected from nuclear pasta, is not required to fit the cooling curve well, but cannot be excluded either. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a detailed spectral analysis of XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the accreting transient black hole GRS 1739−278 during a very faint low hard state at ∼0.02% of the Eddington luminosity (for a distance of 8.5 kpc and a mass of 10 ). The broadband X-ray spectrum between 0.5 and 60 keV can be well-described by a power-law continuum with an exponential cutoff. The continuum is unusually hard for such a low luminosity, with a photon index of Γ = 1.39 ± 0.04. We find evidence for an additional reflection component from an optically thick accretion disk at the 98% likelihood level. The reflection fraction is low, with . In combination with measurements of the spin and inclination parameters made with NuSTAR during a brighter hard state by Miller et al., we seek to constrain the accretion disk geometry. Depending on the assumed emissivity profile of the accretion disk, we find a truncation radius of 15–35 (5–12 ) at the 90% confidence limit. We analyze the latest Suzaku observation of the bright neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binary Serpens X-1 taken in 2013 October and 2014 April. The observation was taken using the burst mode and only suffered mild pile-up effects. A broad iron line is clearly detected in the X-ray spectrum. We test different models and find that the iron line is asymmetric and best interpreted by relativistic reflection. The relativistically broadened iron line is generally believed to originate from the innermost regions of the accretion disk, where strong gravity causes a series of special and general relativistic effects. The iron line profile indicates an inner radius of ∼8 RG, which gives an upper limit on the size of the NS. The asymmetric iron line has been observed in a number of previous observations, which gives several inner radius measurements at different flux states. We find that the inner radius of Serpens X-1 does not evolve significantly over the range of L/LEdd ∼ 0.4–0.6, and the lack of flux dependence of the inner radius implies that the accretion disk may be truncated outside of the innermost stable circular orbit by the boundary layer, rather than the stellar magnetic field. M82 X-1 is one of the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) known, which, assuming Eddington-limited accretion and other considerations, makes it one of the best intermediate-mass black-hole (IMBH) candidates. However, the ULX may still be explained by super-Eddington accretion onto a stellar remnant black hole. We present simultaneous NuSTAR, Chandra, and Swift/XRT observations during the peak of a flaring episode with the aim of modeling the emission of M82 X-1 and yielding insights into its nature. We find that thin accretion disk models all require accretion rates at or above the Eddington limit in order to reproduce the spectral shape, given a range of black-hole masses and spins. Since at these high Eddington ratios the thin-disk model breaks down due to radial advection in the disk, we discard the results of the thin-disk models as unphysical. We find that the temperature profile as a function of disk radius () is significantly flatter () than expected for a standard thin disk (p = 0.75). A flatter profile is instead characteristic of a slim disk, which is highly suggestive of super-Eddington accretion. Furthermore, radiation hydrodynamical simulations of super-Eddington accretion have shown that the predicted spectra of these systems are very similar to what we observe for M82 X-1. We therefore conclude that M82 X-1 is a super-Eddington accretor. Our mass estimates inferred from the inner disk radius imply a stellar remnant black hole ( = M⊙) when assuming zero spin and face-on inclination, or an IMBH for maximal spin and a highly inclined disk. We report on a simultaneous NuSTAR and Swift observation of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1728-34. We identified and removed four Type I X-ray bursts during the observation in order to study the persistent emission. The continuum spectrum is hard and described well by a blackbody with kT = 1.5 keV and a cutoff power law with Γ = 1.5, and a cutoff temperature of 25 keV. Residuals between 6 and 8 keV provide strong evidence of a broad Fe Kα line. By modeling the spectrum with a relativistically blurred reflection model, we find an upper limit for the inner disk radius of . Consequently, we find that RNS ≤ 23 km, assuming M = 1.4 M⊙ and a = 0.15. We also find an upper limit on the magnetic field of B ≤ 2 × 108 G. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a multi-epoch hard X-ray analysis of Cygnus X-1 in its soft state based on four observations with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). Despite the basic similarity of the observed spectra, there is clear spectral variability between epochs. To investigate this variability, we construct a model incorporating both the standard disk-corona continuum and relativistic reflection from the accretion disk, based on prior work on Cygnus X-1, and apply this model to each epoch independently. We find excellent consistency for the black hole spin and the iron abundance of the accretion disk, which are expected to remain constant on observational timescales. In particular, we confirm that Cygnus X-1 hosts a rapidly rotating black hole, , in broad agreement with the majority of prior studies of the relativistic disk reflection and constraints on the spin obtained through studies of the thermal accretion disk continuum. Our work also confirms the apparent misalignment between the inner disk and the orbital plane of the binary system reported previously, finding the magnitude of this warp to be ∼10°–15°. This level of misalignment does not significantly change (and may even improve) the agreement between our reflection results and the thermal continuum results regarding the black hole spin. The spectral variability observed by NuSTAR is dominated by the primary continuum, implying variability in the temperature of the scattering electron plasma. Finally, we consistently observe absorption from ionized iron at ∼6.7 keV, which varies in strength as a function of orbital phase in a manner consistent with the absorbing material being an ionized phase of the focused stellar wind from the supergiant companion star. We report on observations of the neutron star (NS) residing in the low-mass X-ray binary 1RXS J180408.9-34205 taken 2015 March by NuSTAR and XMM-Newton while the source was in the hard spectral state. We find multiple reflection features (Fe detected with NuSTAR; N vii, O vii, and O viii detected in the RGS) from different ionization zones. Through joint fits using the self-consistent relativistic reflection model relxill, we determine the inner radius to be ≤11.1 Rg. For a 1.4 NS with a spin of , this is an inner disk radius of km. We find the inclination of the system to be between 18° and 29°. If the disk is truncated at a radius greater than the NS radius, it could be truncated by a boundary layer on the NS surface. It is also possible that the disk is truncated at the magnetospheric radius; conservative estimates would then imply G at the magnetic poles, though coherent pulsations have not been detected and the source is not identified as a pulsar.
