We estimate the mass of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the kinematics of 30 LMC globular clusters (GCs). We combine proper motions measured with the Hubble Space Telescope, Gaia, or a combination of the two, from a recent study by Bennet et al. with literature line-of-sight velocities (LOSVs) to give three components of motion. With these, we derive a 3D velocity dispersion anisotropy β = − 0.72 − 1.07 + 0.62 , consistent with the GCs forming a flattened system with significant azimuthal motion. We then apply a tracer mass estimator and measure an enclosed mass M (< 13.2 kpc) = 2.66 − 0.36 + 0.42 × 10 10 M ⊙. This is broadly consistent with results from previous studies of the LOSVs of GCs and other luminous tracers. Assuming a cosmologically constrained Navarro–Frenk–White distribution for the dark matter, this implies a virial mass M virial = 1.80 − 0.54 + 1.05 × 10 11 M ⊙. Despite being an extrapolation by almost an order of magnitude in radius, this result is consistent with published estimates from other methods that are directly sensitive to the LMC's total mass. Luminous quasars are powerful targets to investigate the role of feedback from supermassive black holes (BHs) in regulating the growth phases of BHs themselves and of their host galaxies, up to the highest redshifts. Here we investigate the cosmic evolution of the occurrence and kinematics of BH-driven outflows, as traced by broad absorption line (BAL) features, due to the C iv ionic transition. We exploit a sample of 1935 quasars at z = 2.1–6.6 with bolometric luminosity log(L bol/erg s−1) ≳ 46.5, drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and from the X-Shooter legacy survey of Quasars at the Reionization Epoch (XQR-30). We consider rest-frame optical bright quasars to minimize observational biases due to quasar selection criteria. We apply a homogeneous BAL-identification analysis, based on employing composite template spectra to estimate the quasar intrinsic emission. We find a BAL quasar fraction close to 20% at z ∼ 2–4, while it increases to almost 50% at z ∼ 6. The velocity and width of the BAL features also increase at z ≳ 4.5. We exclude the possibility that the redshift evolution of the BAL properties is due to differences in terms of quasar luminosity and accretion rate. These results suggest significant BH feedback occurring in the 1 Gyr old universe, likely affecting the growth of BHs and, possibly, of their host galaxies, as supported by models of early BH and galaxy evolution. We explore the properties of stellar kinematics and ionized gas in a sample of 1106 local (U)LIRGs from the AKARI telescope. We combine data from Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 13 to fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of each source to constrain the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the total IR luminosity and estimate physical parameters such as stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR). We split our sample into AGNs and weak/non-AGNs. We find that our sample is considerably above the main sequence. The highest SFRs and stellar masses are associated with ULIRGs. We also fit the H β and H α regions to characterize the outflows. We find that the incidence of ionized gas outflows in AGN (U)LIRGs (∼72%) is much higher than that in weak/non-AGN ones (∼39%). The AGN ULIRGs have extreme outflow velocities (up to ∼2300 km s−1) and high mass-outflow rates (up to ∼60 M ⊙ yr−1). Our results suggest that starbursts are insufficient to produce such powerful outflows. We explore the correlations of SFR and specific SFR (sSFR) with ionized gas outflows. We find that AGN hosts with the highest SFRs exhibit a negative correlation between outflow velocity and sSFR. Dwarf galaxies located in extremely underdense cosmic voids are excellent test beds for disentangling the effects of large-scale environments on galaxy formation and evolution. We present the first results of the Dwarfs in Void Environments Survey, which has obtained integral field spectroscopy for low-mass galaxies (M ⋆ = 107–109 M ⊙) located inside (N = 21) and outside (N = 9) cosmic voids using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. Using measurements of stellar line-of-sight rotational velocity v rot and velocity dispersion σ ⋆, we test the tidal stirring hypothesis, which posits that dwarf spheroidal galaxies are formed through tidal interactions with more massive host galaxies. We measure low values of v rot/ σ ⋆ ≲ 2 for our sample of isolated dwarf galaxies, and we find no trend between v rot/ σ ⋆ and the distance from a massive galaxy d L ⋆ out to d L ⋆ ∼ 10 Mpc. These suggest that dwarf galaxies can become dispersion-supported, "puffy" systems even in the absence of environmental effects like tidal interactions. We also find indications of an upward trend between v rot/ σ ⋆ and galaxy stellar mass, perhaps implying that stellar disk formation depends on mass rather than environment. Although some of our conclusions may be slightly modified by systematic effects, our main result still holds: that isolated low-mass galaxies may form and remain as puffy systems rather than the dynamically cold disks predicted by classical galaxy formation theory. Cluster galaxies are subject to the ram pressure exerted by the intracluster medium, which can perturb or even strip away their gas while leaving the stars undisturbed. We model the distribution and kinematics of the stars and the molecular gas in four late-type cluster galaxies (JO201, JO204, JO206, and JW100), which show tails of atomic and ionized gas indicative of ongoing ram pressure stripping. We analyze MUSE@VLT data and CO data from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array searching for signatures of radial gas flows, ram pressure stripping, and other perturbations. We find that all galaxies, with the possible exception of JW100, host stellar bars. Signatures of ram pressure are found in JO201 and JO206, which also shows clear indications of ongoing stripping in the molecular disk outskirts. The stripping affects the whole molecular gas disk of JW100. The molecular gas kinematics in JO204 is instead dominated by rotation rather than ram pressure. We also find indications of enhanced turbulence of the molecular gas compared to field galaxies. Large-scale radial flows of molecular gas are present in JO204 and JW100, but more uncertain in JO201 and JO206. We show that our sample follows the molecular gas mass–size relation, confirming that it is essentially independent of environment even for the most extreme cases of stripping. Our findings are consistent with the molecular gas being affected by the ram pressure on different timescales and less severely than the atomic and ionized gas phases, likely because the molecular gas is denser and more gravitationally bound to the galaxy. We present results on the properties of extreme gas outflows in massive (M * ∼ 1011 M ⊙), compact, starburst (star formation rate, SFR∼ 200 M ⊙ yr−1) galaxies at z = 0.4–0.7 with very high star formation surface densities (ΣSFR ∼ 2000 M ⊙ yr−1 kpc−2). Using optical Keck/HIRES spectroscopy of 14 HizEA starburst galaxies, we identify outflows with maximum velocities of 820–2860 km s−1. High-resolution spectroscopy allows us to measure precise column densities and covering fractions as a function of outflow velocity and characterize the kinematics and structure of the cool gas outflow phase (T ∼ 104 K). We find substantial variation in the absorption profiles, which likely reflects the complex morphology of inhomogeneously distributed, clumpy gas and the intricacy of the turbulent mixing layers between the cold and hot outflow phases. There is not a straightforward correlation between the bursts in the galaxies' star formation histories and their wind absorption line profiles, as might naively be expected for starburst-driven winds. The lack of strong Mg ii absorption at the systemic velocity is likely an orientation effect, where the observations are down the axis of a blowout. We infer high mass outflow rates of ∼50–2200 M ⊙ yr−1, assuming a fiducial outflow size of 5 kpc, and mass loading factors of η ∼ 5 for most of the sample. While these values have high uncertainties, they suggest that starburst galaxies are capable of ejecting very large amounts of cool gas that will substantially impact their future evolution. We report a measurement of the trigonometric parallax of 22 GHz water masers in the massive star-forming region G034.43+0.24 as part of the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy Survey using the Very Long Baseline Array. The parallax is 0.330 ± 0.018 mas, corresponding to a distance of 3.03 − 0.16 + 0.17 kpc. This locates G034.43+0.24 near the inner edge of the Sagittarius spiral arm and at one end of a linear distribution of massive young stars that cross nearly the full width of the arm. The measured three-dimensional motion of G034.43+0.24 indicates a near-circular Galactic orbit. In this work, we study the phase-space and chemical properties of the Sagittarius (Sgr) stream, the tidal tails produced by the ongoing destruction of the Sgr dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, focusing on its very metal-poor (VMP; [Fe/H] < −2) content. We combine spectroscopic and astrometric information from SEGUE and Gaia EDR3, respectively, with data products from a new large-scale run of the StarHorse spectrophotometric code. Our selection criteria yield ∼1600 stream members, including >200 VMP stars. We find the leading arm (b > 0°) of the Sgr stream to be more metal-poor, by ∼0.2 dex, than the trailing one (b < 0°). With a subsample of turnoff and subgiant stars, we estimate this substructure's stellar population to be ∼1 Gyr older than the thick disk's. With the aid of an N -body model of the Sgr system, we verify that simulated particles stripped earlier (>2 Gyr ago) have present-day phase-space properties similar to lower metallicity stream stars. Conversely, those stripped more recently (<2 Gyr) are preferentially akin to metal-rich ([Fe/H] > −1) members of the stream. Such correlation between kinematics and chemistry can be explained by the existence of a dynamically hotter, less centrally concentrated, and more metal-poor population in Sgr dSph prior to its disruption, implying that this galaxy was able to develop a metallicity gradient before its accretion. Finally, we identified several carbon-enhanced metal-poor ([C/Fe] > +0.7 and [Fe/H] ≤ −1.5) stars in the Sgr stream, which might be in tension with current observations of its remaining core where such objects are not found. The heart of the Large Magellanic Cloud, 30 Doradus, is a complex region with a clear core-halo structure. Feedback from the stellar cluster R136 has been shown to be the main source of energy creating multiple parsec-scale expanding-shells in the outer region, and carving a nebula core in the proximity of the ionization source. We present the morphology and strength of the magnetic fields (B -fields) of 30 Doradus inferred from the far-infrared polarimetric observations by SOFIA/HAWC+ at 89, 154, and 214 μ m. The B -field morphology is complex, showing bending structures around R136. In addition, we use high spectral and angular resolution [C ii ] observations from SOFIA/GREAT and CO(2-1) from APEX. The kinematic structure of the region correlates with the B -field morphology and shows evidence of multiple expanding-shells. Our B -field strength maps, estimated using the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi method and structure-function, show variations across the cloud within a maximum of 600, 450, and 350 μ G at 89, 154, and 214 μ m, respectively. We estimated that the majority of the 30 Doradus clouds are subcritical and sub-Alfvénic. The probability distribution function of the gas density shows that the turbulence is mainly compressively driven, while the plasma beta parameter indicates supersonic turbulence. We show that the B -field is sufficient to hold the cloud structure integrity under feedback from R136. We suggest that supersonic compressive turbulence enables the local gravitational collapse and triggers a new generation of stars to form. We present a study on the detailed elemental abundances of newly identified, bright, very metal-poor stars with the detection of lithium, initially observed as part of the SDSS/MARVELS pre-survey. These stars were selected for high-resolution spectroscopic follow-up as part of the HESP-GOMPA survey. In this work, we discuss the Li abundances detected for several stars in the survey, which include main-sequence stars, subgiants, and red giants. Different classes of stars are found to exhibit very similar distributions of Li, which points toward a common origin. We derive a scaling relation for the depletion of Li as a function of temperature for giants and main-sequence stars; the majority of the samples from the literature were found to fall within 1 σ (0.19 and 0.12 dex Kâˆ'1 for giants and dwarfs, respectively) of this relationship. We also report the existence of a slope of the Li abundance as a function of distance from the Galactic plane, indicating mixed stellar populations. Most Li-rich stars are found to be in or close to the Galactic plane. Along with Li, we have derived detailed abundances for C, odd- Z, α -, Fe-peak, and neutron-capture elements for each star. We have also used astrometric parameters from Gaia-EDR3 to complement our study, and derived kinematics to differentiate between the motions of the starsâ€"those formed in situ and those accreted. The stellar population of the Spite plateau, including additional stars from the literature, is found to have significant contributions from stars formed in situ and through accretion. High-mass star formation theories make distinct predictions on the properties of the prestellar seeds of high-mass stars. Observations of the early stages of high-mass star formation can provide crucial constraints, but they are challenging and scarce. We investigate the properties of the prestellar core population embedded in the high-mass clump AGAL014.492-00.139, and we study the kinematics at the clump and clump-to-core scales. We have analyzed an extensive data set acquired with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array interferometer. Applying a dendrogram analysis to the Band 7 o‐H2D+ data, we identified 22 cores. We fitted their average spectra in local thermodinamic equilibrium conditions, and we analyzed their continuum emission at 0.8 mm. The cores have transonic to mildly supersonic turbulence levels and appear to be mostly low-mass, with M core < 30 M ⊙ . Furthermore, we have analyzed Band 3 observations of the N2H+ (1â€"0) transition, which traces the large-scale gas kinematics. Using a friend-of-friend algorithm, we identify four main velocity coherent structures, all of which are associated with prestellar and protostellar cores. One of them presents a filament-like structure, and our observations could be consistent with mass accretion toward one of the protostars. In this case, we estimate a mass accretion rate of M ̇ acc ≈ 2 Ă— 10 âˆ' 4 M ⊙ yr âˆ' 1 . Our results support a clump-fed accretion scenario in the target source. The cores in the prestellar stage are essentially low-mass, and they appear to be subvirial and gravitationally bound, unless further support is available, for instance, due to magnetic fields. We use medium-resolution Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectroscopy of bright quasars to study cool gas traced by Ca ii λλ 3934, 3969 and Na i λλ 5891, 5897 absorption in the interstellar/circumgalactic media of 21 foreground star-forming galaxies at redshifts 0.03 < z < 0.20 with stellar masses 7.4 ≤ log M */ M ⊙ ≤ 10.6. The quasarâ€"galaxy pairs were drawn from a unique sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra with intervening nebular emission, and thus have exceptionally close impact parameters (R ⊥ < 13 kpc). The strength of this line emission implies that the galaxies’ star formation rates (SFRs) span a broad range, with several lying well above the star-forming sequence. We use Voigt profile modeling to derive column densities and component velocities for each absorber, finding that column densities N (Ca ii) > 1012.5 cmâˆ'2 (N (Na i) > 1012.0 cmâˆ'2) occur with an incidence f C(Ca ii) = 0.63+0.10âˆ'0.11 (f C(Na i) = 0.57+0.10âˆ'0.11). We find no evidence for a dependence of f C or the rest-frame equivalent widths W r (Ca ii K) or W r (Na i 5891) on R ⊥ or M *. Instead, W r (Ca ii K) is correlated with local SFR at >3 σ significance, suggesting that Ca ii traces star formation-driven outflows. While most of the absorbers have velocities within ±50 km sâˆ'1 of the host redshift, their velocity widths (characterized by Î" v 90) are universally 30â€"177 km sâˆ'1 larger than that implied by tilted-ring modeling of the velocities of interstellar material. These kinematics must trace galactic fountain flows and demonstrate that they persist at R ⊥ > 5 kpc. Finally, we assess the relationship between dust reddening and W r (Ca ii K) (W r (Na i 5891)), finding that 33% (24%) of the absorbers are inconsistent with the best-fit Milky Way E (B âˆ'V)- W r relations at >3 σ significance. We present ALMA observations of CO J = 2 âˆ' 1 and CS J = 5 âˆ' 4 emission from the disk around TW Hydrae. Both molecules trace a predominantly Keplerian velocity structure, although a slowing of the rotation velocity is detected at the outer edge of the disk beyond ≈140 au in CO emission. This was attributed to the enhanced pressure support from the gas density taper near the outer edge of the disk. Subtraction of an azimuthally symmetric background velocity structure reveals localized deviations in the gas kinematics traced by each of the molecules. Both CO and CS exhibit a “Doppler flip” feature, centered nearly along the minor axis of the disk (PA ∼ 60°) at a radius of 1.″35, coinciding with the large gap observed in scattered light and mm continuum. In addition, the CO emission, both through changes in intensity and its kinematics, traces a tightly wound spiral, previously seen with higher-frequency CO J = 3 âˆ' 2 observations. Through comparison with linear models of the spiral wakes generated by embedded planets, we interpret these features in the context of interactions with a Saturn-mass planet within the gap at a position angle of PA = 60°, consistent with the theoretical predictions of Mentiplay et al. The lack of a corresponding spiral in the CS emission is attributed to the strong vertical dependence on the buoyancy spirals, which are believed to only grow in the atmospheric of the disk, rather than those traced by CS emission. We investigate the internal kinematics of the young star-forming region NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We used two epochs of deep F555W and F814W Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys observations with an 11 yr baseline to determine proper motions and study the kinematics of different populations, as identified by their colorâ€"magnitude diagram and spatial distribution characteristics. The proper motion field of the young stars shows a complex structure with spatially coherent patterns. NGC 346’s upper main sequence and pre-main sequence stars follow very similar motion patterns, with the outer parts of the cluster being characterized both by outflows and inflows. The proper motion field in the inner ∼10 pc shows a combination of rotation and inflow, indicative of inspiraling motion. The rotation velocity in this regions peaks at ∼3 km sâˆ'1, whereas the inflow velocity peaks at ∼1 km sâˆ'1. Subclusters and massive young stellar objects in NGC 346 are found at the interface of significant changes in the coherence of the proper motion field. This suggests that turbulence is the main star formation driver in this region. Similar kinematics observed in the metal-poor NGC 346 and in the Milky Way’s star-forming regions suggest that the differences in the cooling conditions due to different amounts of metallicity and dust density between the SMC and our galaxy are too small to alter significantly the process of star cluster assembly and growth. We present the stellar radial velocity analysis of the central 1 ′ Ă— 1 ′ of the young massive Small Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 346. Using VLT/MUSE integral field spectroscopy in combination with Hubble Space Telescope photometry, we extract 103 spectra of cluster member stars suited to measure accurate line-of-sight kinematics. The cluster member stars show two distinct velocity groups at v 1 = âˆ' 3.3 âˆ' 0.2 + 0.3 km s âˆ' 1 and v 2 = 2.6 âˆ' 0.1 + 0.1 km s âˆ' 1 , relative to the systemic velocity of (165.5 ± 0.2) km sâˆ'1, and hint at a third group at v 3 = 9.4 âˆ' 0.1 + 0.1 km s âˆ' 1 . We show that there is neither a correlation between the velocity groups and the spatial location of the stars, nor their locus on optical colorâ€"magnitude diagrams, which makes the stellar velocity a key parameter to separate individual stellar components in such a young star cluster. Velocity group 2 shows clear rotation with Ω2 =(âˆ'0.4 ± 0.1) Myrâˆ'1, corresponding to (âˆ'4.9 ± 0.7) km sâˆ'1 at radial distance of 10 pc from the center, a possible remnant of the formation process of NGC 346 through the hierarchical collapse of the giant molecular cloud. The ionizing gas has lost any natal kinematic imprint and shows clear expansion, driven by far-ultraviolet fluxes and stellar winds of the numerous OB stars in the cluster center. The size of this expanding bubble and its expansion velocity of 7.9 km sâˆ'1 are in excellent agreement with the estimate that the latest star formation episode occurred about two million years ago. Changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC 4151, which has attracted a lot of attention, is undergoing the second dramatic outburst stage in its evolutionary history. To investigate the geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR), and measure the mass of supermassive black hole in NGC 4151, we perform a 7 month photometric and spectroscopic monitoring program in 2020â€"2021, using the 2.4 m telescope at Lijiang Observatory. We successfully measure the time lags of the responses from broad H α, H β, H Îł, He i, and He ii emission lines to continuum variation, which are 7.63 âˆ' 2.62 + 1.85 , 6.21 âˆ' 1.13 + 1.41 , 5.67 âˆ' 1.94 + 1.65 , 1.59 âˆ' 1.11 + 0.86 , and 0.46 âˆ' 1.06 + 1.22 days, respectively, following radial stratification. The ratios of time lags among these lines are 1.23: 1.00: 0.91: 0.26: 0.07. We find that the continuum lag between the ultraviolet and optical bands can significantly affect the lag measurements of He i and He ii. Virial and infalling gas motions coexist in this campaign, which is different from previous results, implying the evolutionary kinematics of BLR. Based on our measurements and previous ones in the literature, we confirm that the BLR of NGC 4151 is basically virialized. Finally, we compute the black hole mass through multiple lines, and the measurement from H β to be 3.94 âˆ' 0.72 + 0.90 Ă— 10 7 M ⊙ , which is consistent with previous results. We present a detailed study of the massive star-forming region G35.2-0.74N with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.3 mm multi-configuration observations. At 0.″2 (440 au) resolution, the continuum emission reveals several dense cores along a filamentary structure, consistent with previous ALMA 0.85 mm observations. At 0.″03 (66 au) resolution, we detect 22 compact sources, most of which are associated with the filament. Four of the sources are associated with compact centimeter continuum emission, and two of these are associated with H30 α recombination line emission. The H30 α line kinematics shows the ordered motion of the ionized gas, consistent with disk rotation and/or outflow expansion. We construct models of photoionized regions to simultaneously fit the multiwavelength freeâ€"free fluxes and the H30 α total fluxes. The derived properties suggest the presence of at least three massive young stars with nascent hypercompact H ii regions. Two of these ionized regions are surrounded by a large rotating structure that feeds two individual disks, revealed by dense gas tracers, such as SO2, H2CO, and CH3OH. In particular, the SO2 emission highlights two spiral structures in one of the disks and probes the faster-rotating inner disks. The 12CO emission from the general region reveals a complex outflow structure, with at least four outflows identified. The remaining 18 compact sources are expected to be associated with lower-mass protostars forming in the vicinity of the massive stars. We find potential evidence for disk disruption due to dynamic interactions in the inner region of this protocluster. The spatial distribution of the sources suggests a smooth overall radial density gradient without subclustering, but with tentative evidence of primordial mass segregation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an analysis of the kinematics of the Radcliffe Wave, a 2.7 kpc long sinusoidal band of molecular clouds in the solar neighborhood recently detected via 3D dust mapping. With Gaia DR2 astrometry and spectroscopy, we analyze the 3D space velocities of ∼1500 young stars along the Radcliffe Wave in action-angle space, using the motion of the wave’s newly born stars as a proxy for its gas motion. We find that the vertical angle of young starsâ€"corresponding to their orbital phase perpendicular to the Galactic planeâ€"varies significantly as a function of position along the structure, in a pattern potentially consistent with a wavelike oscillation. This kind of oscillation is not seen in a control sample of older stars from Gaia occupying the same volume, disfavoring formation channels caused by long-lived physical processes. We use a “wavy midplane” model to try to account for the trend in vertical angles seen in young stars, and find that while the best-fit parameters for the wave’s spatial period and amplitude are qualitatively consistent with the existing morphology defined by 3D dust, there is no evidence for additional velocity structure. These results support more recent and/or transitory processes in the formation of the Radcliffe Wave, which would primarily affect the motion of the wave’s gaseous material. Comparisons of our results with new and upcoming simulations, in conjunction with new stellar radial velocity measurements in Gaia DR3, should allow us to further discriminate between various competing hypotheses. We use hydrodynamical simulations of two Milky Wayâ€"mass galaxies to demonstrate the impact of cosmic-ray pressure on the kinematics of cool and warm circumgalactic gas. Consistent with previous studies, we find that cosmic-ray pressure can dominate over thermal pressure in the inner 50 kpc of the circumgalactic medium (CGM), creating an overall cooler CGM than that of similar galaxy simulations run without cosmic rays. We generate synthetic sight lines of the simulated galaxies’ CGM and use Voigt profile-fitting methods to extract ion column densities, Doppler- b parameters, and velocity centroids of individual absorbers. We directly compare these synthetic spectral line fits with HST/COS CGM absorption-line data analyses, which tend to show that metallic species with a wide range of ionization potential energies are often kinematically aligned. Compared to the Milky Way simulation run without cosmic rays, the presence of cosmic-ray pressure in the inner CGM creates narrower O vi absorption features and broader Si iii absorption features, a quality that is more consistent with observational data. Additionally, because the cool gas is buoyant due to nonthermal cosmic-ray pressure support, the velocity centroids of both cool and warm gas tend to align in the simulated Milky Way with feedback from cosmic rays. Our study demonstrates that detailed, direct comparisons between simulations and observations, focused on gas kinematics, have the potential to reveal the dominant physical mechanisms that shape the CGM. We report high-resolution (2″ ∼ 200 pc) mappings of the central region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 in the CO(1â€"0) and CO(2â€"1) emission lines. The 2â€"1/1â€"0 ratio of integrated intensities shows a large scatter (0.15) with a median value of 0.67. We also calculate the ratio of velocity dispersions and peak temperatures and find that in most cases the velocity dispersion ratio is close to unity and thus the peak temperature ratio is comparable to the integrated intensity ratio. This result indicates that both CO(1â€"0) and CO(2â€"1) lines trace similar components of molecular gas, with their integrated intensity (or peak temperature) ratios reflecting the gas density and/or temperature. Similar to recent kiloparsec-scale studies, these ratios show a positive correlation with a star formation rate indicator (here we use an extinction-corrected H α map), suggesting that molecular gas associated with recent star formation is denser and/or warmer. We also find that some CO spectra show two peaks owing to complicated kinematics, and such two components likely trace molecular gas at different conditions. We present the Waves in Nearby Disk galaxies Survey (WiNDS) consisting of 40 nearby low-inclination disk galaxies observed through H α high-resolution Fabryâ€"Perot interferometry. WiNDS consists of 12 new galaxy observations and 28 data archived observations obtained from different galaxy surveys. We derive two-dimensional line-of-sight velocity fields that are analyzed to identify the possible presence of vertical velocity flows in the galactic disks of these low-inclination late-type galaxies using velocity residual maps, derived from the subtraction of an axisymmetric rotation model from a rotational velocity map. Large and globally coherent flows in the line-of-sight velocity of nearly face-on galaxies can be associated with large vertical displacement of the disk with respect to its midplane. Our goal is to characterize how frequent vertical perturbations, such as those observed in the Milky Way, arise in the local universe. Our currently available data have allowed us to identify 20% of WiNDS galaxies with strong velocity perturbations that are consistent with vertically perturbed galactic disks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A number of studies based on the data collected by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) GO-13297 program “HST Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters: Shedding UV Light on Their Populations and Formation” have investigated the photometric properties of a large sample of Galactic globular clusters and revolutionized our understanding of their stellar populations. In this paper, we expand upon previous studies by focusing our attention on the stellar clusters’ internal kinematics. We computed proper motions for stars in 56 globular clusters and one open cluster by combining the GO-13297 images with archival HST data. The astrophotometric catalogs released with this paper represent the most complete and homogeneous collection of proper motions of stars in the cores of stellar clusters to date, and expand the information provided by the current (and future) Gaia data releases to much fainter stars and into the crowded central regions. We also census the general kinematic properties of stellar clusters by computing the velocity dispersion and anisotropy radial profiles of their bright members. We study the dependence on concentration and relaxation time, and derive dynamical distances. Finally, we present an in-depth kinematic analysis of the globular cluster NGC 5904. Pulsar H α bow shocks provide rare opportunities to constrain the energetics and kinematics of the relativistic pulsar wind. We have acquired optical imaging and integral field unit spectroscopy of the bow shock of the millisecond pulsar PSR J1959+2048, measuring the shock symmetry axis at a position angle = 213.2 ± 0.°2 and showing that this slow nonradiative shock has a broad-to-narrow line component ratio I b / I n = 4. The data show that the pulsar’s velocity lies 2.°2 out of the plane of the sky. Coupled with a new fit for its timing proper motion, giving ÎĽ tot = 30.05 mas yrâˆ'1 and a Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) interferometric parallax measurement giving d = 2.57 âˆ' 0.77 + 1.84 kpc (90% range), we have unusually complete information on the pulsar kinematics. The bow shock constraints on the wind momentum flux imply that, at the best-fit parallax distance, the pulsar moment of inertia must be very large and/or the H α efficiency at its modest shock velocity must be very high. Theoretically, misalignment between the magnetic field and rotational axis in a dense core is considered to be dynamically important in the star formation process; however, the extent of this influence remains observationally unclear. For a sample of 32 Class 0 and I protostars in the Perseus Molecular Cloud, we analyzed gas motions using C18O data from the SMA MASSES survey and the magnetic field structures using 850 μ m polarimetric data from the JCMT BISTRO-1 survey and archive. We do not find any significant correlation between the velocity gradients in the C18O emission in the protostellar envelopes at a 1000 au scale and the misalignment between the outflows and magnetic field orientations in the dense cores at a 4000 au scale, and there is also no correlation between the velocity gradients and the angular dispersions of the magnetic fields. However, a significant dependence on the misalignment angles emerges after we normalize the rotational motion by the infalling motion, where the ratios increase from ≲1 to ≳1 with increasing misalignment angle. This suggests that the misalignment could prompt angular momentum transportation to the envelope scale but is not a dominant factor in determining the envelope rotation, and other parameters, such as mass accretion in protostellar sources, also play an important role. These results remain valid after taking into account projection effects. The comparison between our estimated angular momentum in the protostellar envelopes and the sizes of the known protostellar disks suggests that significant angular momentum is likely lost between radii of ∼1000 and 100 au in protostellar envelopes. Integral field spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies has become a powerful tool for understanding their dynamics and evolutionary states. However, in the case of gravitationally lensed systems, it has proved difficult to model both lensing and intrinsic kinematics in a way that takes full advantage of the information available in the spectral domain. In this paper, we introduce a new method for pixel-based source reconstruction that alters standard regularization schemes for two-dimensional (2D) data in a way that leverages kinematic information in a physically motivated but flexible fashion, and that is better suited to the three-dimensional (3D) nature of integral field data. To evaluate the performance of this method, we compare its results to those of a more traditional 2D nonparametric approach using mock Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of a typical high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxy. We find that 3D regularization applied to an entire data cube reconstructs a source’s intensity and velocity structure more accurately than 2D regularization applied to separate velocity channels. Cubes reconstructed with 3D regularization also have more uniform noise and resolution properties and are less sensitive to the signal-to-noise ratio of individual velocity channels than the results of 2D regularization. Our new approach to modeling integral field observations of lensed systems can be implemented without making restrictive a priori assumptions about intrinsic kinematics, and opens the door to new observing strategies that prioritize spectral resolution over spatial resolution (e.g., for multiconfiguration arrays like ALMA). We compare dynamical mass estimates based on spatially extended stellar and ionized gas kinematics (M dyn,* and M dyn,eml, respectively) of 157 star-forming galaxies at 0.6 ≤ z < 1. Compared with z ∼ 0, these galaxies have enhanced star formation rates, with stellar feedback likely affecting the dynamics of the gas. We use LEGA-C DR3, the highest-redshift data set that provides sufficiently deep measurements of a K s -band limited sample. For M dyn,*, we use Jeans anisotropic multi-Gaussian expansion models. For M dyn,eml, we first fit a custom model of a rotating exponential disk with uniform dispersion, whose light is projected through a slit and corrected for beam smearing. We then apply an asymmetric drift correction based on assumptions common in the literature to the fitted kinematic components to obtain the circular velocity, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. Within the half-light radius, M dyn,eml is on average lower than M dyn,*, with a mean offset of â€"0.15 ± 0.016 dex and galaxy-to-galaxy scatter of 0.19 dex, reflecting the combined random uncertainty. While data of higher spatial resolution are needed to understand this small offset, it supports the assumption that the galaxy-wide ionized gas kinematics do not predominantly originate from disruptive events such as star formationâ€"driven outflows. However, a similar agreement can be obtained without modeling from the integrated emission line dispersions for axis ratios q < 0.8. This suggests that our current understanding of gas kinematics is not sufficient to efficiently apply asymmetric drift corrections to improve dynamical mass estimates compared with observations lacking the signal-to-noise ratio required for spatially extended dynamics. We present analysis of the proper-motion (PM) field of the red clump stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) disk using the Gaia Early Data Release 3 catalog. Using a kinematic model based on old stars with 3D velocity measurements, we construct the residual PM field by subtracting the center-of-mass motion and internal rotation motion components. The residual PM field reveals asymmetric patterns, including larger residual PMs in the southern disk. Comparisons of the observed residual PM field with those of five numerical simulations of an LMC analog that is subject to the tidal fields of the Milky Way and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) show that the present-day LMC is not in dynamical equilibrium. We find that both the observed level of disk heating (PM residual rms of 0.057 ± 0.002 mas yrâˆ'1) and kinematic asymmetry are not reproduced by Milky Way tides or if the SMC impact parameter is larger than the size of the LMC disk. This measured level of disk heating provides a novel and important method to validate numerical simulations of the LMCâ€"SMC interaction history. Our results alone put constraints on an impact parameter ≲10 kpc and impact timing <250 Myr. When adopting the impact timing constraint of ∼140â€"160 Myr ago from previous studies, our results suggest that the most recent SMC encounter must have occurred with an impact parameter of ∼5 kpc. The kinematics and dynamics of stellar and substellar populations within young, still-forming clusters provide valuable information for constraining theories of formation mechanisms. Using Keck II NIRSPEC+AO data, we have measured radial velocities for 56 low-mass sources within 4′ of the core of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). We also remeasure radial velocities for 172 sources observed with SDSS/APOGEE. These data are combined with proper motions measured using HST ACS/WFPC2/WFC3IR and Keck II NIRC2, creating a sample of 135 sources with all three velocity components. The velocities measured are consistent with a normal distribution in all three components. We measure intrinsic velocity dispersions of (, ,) = (1.64 ± 0.12, 2.03 ± 0.13,) km s−1. Our computed intrinsic velocity dispersion profiles are consistent with the dynamical equilibrium models from Da Rio et al. (2014) in the tangential direction but not in the line-of-sight direction, possibly indicating that the core of the ONC is not yet virialized, and may require a nonspherical potential to explain the observed velocity dispersion profiles. We also observe a slight elongation along the north–south direction following the filament, which has been well studied in previous literature, and an elongation in the line-of-sight to tangential velocity direction. Gas morphology and kinematics in the Milky Way contain key information for understanding the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. We present hydrodynamical simulations based on realistic barred Milky Way potentials constrained by recent observations. Our model can reproduce most features in the observed longitudeâ€"velocity diagram, including the Central Molecular Zone, the Near and Far 3 kpc arms, the Molecular Ring, and the spiral arm tangents. It can also explain the noncircular motions of masers from the recent BeSSeL2 survey. The central gas kinematics are consistent with a mass of 6.9 Ă— 108 M ⊙ in the Nuclear Stellar Disk. Our model predicts the formation of an elliptical gaseous ring surrounding the bar, which is composed of the 3 kpc arms, the Norma arm, and the bar-spiral interfaces. This ring is similar to those “inner” rings in some Milky Way analogs with a boxy/peanut-shaped bulge (e.g., NGC 4565 and NGC 5746). The kinematics of gas near the solar neighborhood are governed by the Local arm. The bar pattern speed constrained by our gas model is 37.5â€"40 km sâˆ'1 kpcâˆ'1, corresponding to a corotation radius of R CR = 6.0â€"6.4 kpc. We investigate the presence of a central black hole (BH) in B023-G078, M31's most massive globular cluster. We present high-resolution, adaptive-optics assisted, integral-field spectroscopic kinematics from Gemini/NIFS that show a strong rotation (∼20 km sâˆ'1) and a velocity dispersion rise toward the center (37 km sâˆ'1). We combine the kinematic data with a mass model based on a two-component fit to HST ACS/HRC data of the cluster to estimate the mass of a putative BH. Our dynamical modeling suggests a >3 σ detection of a BH component of 9.1 âˆ' 2.8 + 2.6 Ă— 10 4 M ⊙ (1 σ uncertainties). The inferred stellar mass of the cluster is 6.22 âˆ' 0.05 + 0.03 Ă— 10 6 M ⊙ , consistent with previous estimates, thus the BH makes up 1.5% of its mass. We examine whether the observed kinematics are caused by a collection of stellar mass BHs by modeling an extended dark mass as a Plummer profile. The upper limit on the size scale of the extended mass is 0.56 pc (95% confidence), which does not rule out an extended mass. There is compelling evidence that B023-G078 is the tidally stripped nucleus of a galaxy with a stellar mass >109 M ⊙, including its high-mass, two-component luminosity profile, color, metallicity gradient, and spread in metallicity. Given the emerging evidence that the central BH occupation fraction of >109 M ⊙ galaxies is high, the most plausible interpretation of the kinematic data is that B023-G078 hosts a central BH. A cosmological zoom-in simulation that develops into a Milky Way-like halo begins at redshift 7. The initial dark matter distribution is seeded with dense star clusters of median mass 5 × 105M⊙, placed in the largest subhalos present, which have a median peak circular velocity of 25 km s−1. Three simulations are initialized using the same dark matter distribution with the star clusters starting on approximately circular orbits having initial median radii 6.8, 0.14 kpc, and, at the exact center of the subhalos. The simulations are evolved to the current epoch at which time the median galactic orbital radii of the three sets of clusters are 30, 5, and 16 kpc, with the clusters losing about 2%, 50%, and 15% of their mass, respectively. Clusters beginning at small orbital radii have so much tidal forcing that they are often not in equilibrium. Clusters that start at larger subhalo radii have a velocity dispersion that declines smoothly to ≃20% of the central value at ≃20 half-mass radii. The clusters that begin in the subhalo centers can show a rise in velocity dispersion beyond 3–5 half-mass radii. That is, the clusters that form without local dark matter always have stellar-mass-dominated kinematics at all radii, whereas about 25% of the clusters that begin in subhalo centers have remnant local dark matter. Despite studying coronal mass ejections (CMEs) for several years, we do not yet have a complete understanding of their kinematics. To this end, it is essential to understand the change in kinematics of the CMEs as they travel from the inner corona (<3 R ⊙) up to the higher heights of the outer corona. We conduct a follow-up statistical study of several 3D kinematic parameters of 59 CMEs previously studied by Majumdar et al. (2020). The source regions of these CMEs are identified and classified as active regions (ARs), active prominences (APs), or prominence eruptions (PEs). We study several statistical correlations between different kinematic parameters of the CMEs. We show that the CMEs’ average kinematic parameters change as they propagate from the inner to the outer corona, indicating the importance of a region where the common practice is to perform averaging. We also find that the CME parameters in the outer corona are highly influenced by those in the inner corona, indicating the importance of the inner corona in the understanding of the kinematics. Furthermore, we find that the source regions of the CMEs tend to have a distinct imprint on the statistical correlations between different kinematic parameters, and that an overall correlation tends to wash away this crucial information. Direct measurements of the masses of supermassive black holes are key to understanding their growth and constraining their symbiotic relationship to their host galaxies. However, current methods used to directly measure black hole masses in active quasars become challenging or impossible beyond z ≳ 0.2. Spectroastrometry (SA) measures the spatial centroid of an object's spectrum as a function of wavelength, delivering angular resolution far better than the point-spread function (PSF) for high signal-to-noise ratio observations. We observed the luminous quasar SDSS J212329.47–005052.9 at z = 2.279 with the aim of resolving its ∼100 μas Hα broad emission-line region (BLR) and present the first SA constraints on the size and kinematic structure of the BLR. Using a novel pipeline to extract the SA signal and reliable uncertainties, we achieved a centroiding precision of ≃100 μas, or >2000× smaller than the K-band AO-corrected PSF, yielding a tentative 3.2σ detection of an SA signal from the BLR. Modeling the BLR emission as arising from an inclined rotating disk with a mixture of coherent and random motions we constrain (), providing a 95% confidence upper limit on the black hole mass. Our results agree with the rBLR–L relation measured for lower-z quasars but expands its dynamic range by an order of magnitude in luminosity. We did not detect the potentially stronger SA signal from the narrow-line region but discuss in detail why it may be absent. Already with existing instrumentation, SA can deliver ∼6× smaller uncertainties (∼15 μas) than achieved here, enabling ∼10% measurements of supermassive black hole masses in high-z quasars. We present the results from a spectroscopic monitoring campaign to obtain reverberation mapping measurements and investigate the broad-line region (BLR) kinematics for active galactic nuclei (AGNs) of Mrk 817 and NGC 7469. This campaign was undertaken with the Lijiang 2.4 m telescope. The median spectroscopic sampling is 2.0 days for Mrk 817 and 1.0 day for NGC 7469. We detect time lags of the broad emission lines, including Hβ, Hγ, He ii, and He i for both AGNs, including Fe ii for Mrk 817 with respect to the varying AGN continuum at 5100 Å. Investigating the relationship between line widths and time lags of the broad emission lines, we find that the BLR dynamics of Mrk 817 and NGC 7469 are consistent with the virial prediction. We estimate the masses of central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the accretion rates of both AGNs. Using the data of this campaign, we construct the velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad Hγ, Hβ, and He i lines for Mrk 817, which show almost the same kinematic signatures in that the time lags in the red wing are slightly larger than the time lags in the blue wing. For NGC 7469, we only clearly construct the velocity-resolved lag profiles of the broad Hγ and Hβ, which show very similar kinematic signatures to the BLR of Mrk 817. These signatures indicate that the BLR of Keplerian motion in both AGNs seemingly has outflowing components during the monitoring period. A global, three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation model has been employed to study the 3D morphology and kinematics of the large shock driven by the 2017 September 10 coronal mass ejection (CME). Based on actual solar observations, which include the photospheric magnetic field and the CME's speed and source location, the simulation result is delicately tuned by matching with coronal polarized brightness observations and in situ solar-wind measurements at 1 au. The simulation reproduces well the shock's shape and position in coronagraphic images. The shock's physical parameters at 1 au are similar to those constrained from the observations, with the simulated transit time being nearly the same as the observed one. The simulation reveals that the shock around the backward direction keeps propagating away from the Sun, and despite its large extent, the shock cannot be seen as a spherical structure forming a 360° envelope around the Sun. Identified as a fast forward shock, the shock has a sharp velocity jump and a large density compression with a Mach number larger than one from the nose toward the lateral parts, consistent with a driven shock all across the front. Compared to the nose, the right flank of the shock has a weak compression ratio, but probably yields enhanced energetic particles for observers aligned with it. It follows that large CME-driven shocks have the potential to accelerate energetic particles over a wide longitudinal separation and are likely responsible for the production of these particles in the inner heliosphere. In this work we examine M dwarf rotation rates at a range of ages to establish benchmarks for M dwarf gyrochronology. This work includes a sample of 713 spectroscopically classified M0–M8 dwarfs with new rotation rates measured from K2 light curves. We analyze data and recover rotation rates for 179 of these objects. We add these to rotation rates for members of clusters with known ages (5–700 Myr), as well as objects assumed to have field ages (≳1 Gyr). We use Gaia DR2 parallax and photometry to create color–magnitude diagrams to compare objects across samples. We use color–period plots to analyze the period distributions across age, as well as incorporate Hα equivalent width and tangential velocity where possible to further comment on age dependence. We find that the age of transition from rapid to slow rotation in clusters, which we define as an elbow in the period–color plots, depends on spectral type. Later spectral types transition at older ages: M4 for Praesepe at ≈700 Myr, one of the oldest clusters for which M dwarf rotation rates have been measured. The transition from active to inactive Hα equivalent width also occurs at this elbow, as objects transition from rapid rotation to the slowly rotating sequence. Redder or smaller stars remain active at older ages. Finally, using Gaia kinematics we find evidence for rotation stalling for late Ms in the field sample, suggesting the transition happens much later for mid- to late-type M dwarfs. We present the first results of an MMT/Hectospec campaign to measure the kinematics of globular clusters (GCs) around M49—the brightest galaxy in the Virgo galaxy cluster, which dominates the Virgo B subcluster. The data include kinematic tracers beyond 95 kpc (∼5.2 effective radii) for M49 for the first time, enabling us to achieve three key insights reported here. First, beyond ∼20′–30′ (∼100–150 kpc), the GC kinematics sampled along the minor photometric axis of M49 become increasingly hotter, indicating a transition from GCs related to M49 to those representing the Virgo B intra-cluster medium. Second, there is an anomaly in the line-of-sight radial velocity dispersion (σr,los) profile in an annulus ∼10–15′ (∼50–90 kpc) from M49 in which the kinematics cool by Δσr,los ≈ 150 km s−1 relative to those in- or outward. The kinematic fingerprint of a previous accretion event is hinted at in projected phase-space, and we isolate GCs that both give rise to this feature, and are spatially co-located with two prominent stellar shells in the halo of M49. Third, we find a subsample of GCs with velocities representative of the dwarf galaxy VCC 1249 that is currently interacting with M49. The spatial distribution of these GCs closely resembles the morphology of VCC 1249's isophotes, indicating that several of these GCs are likely in the act of being stripped from the dwarf during its passage through M49's halo. The distribution and kinematics of the circumstellar medium (CSM) around a supernova remnant (SNR) tell us useful information about the explosion of its natal supernova (SN). Kepler's SNR, the remnant of SN 1604, is widely regarded to be of Type Ia origin. Its shock is moving through a dense, asymmetric CSM. The presence of this dense gas suggests that its parent progenitor system consisted of a white dwarf and an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star. In this paper, we analyze a new and long observation with the reflection grating spectrometers on board the XMM-Newton satellite, spatially resolving the remnant emission in the cross-dispersion direction. We find that the CSM component is blueshifted with velocities in the general range 0–500 km s−1. We also derive information on the central bar structure and find that the northwest half is blueshifted, while the southeast half is redshifted. Our result is consistent with a picture proposed by previous studies, in which a "runaway" AGB star moved to the north-northwest and toward us in the line of sight, although it is acceptable for both single- and core-degenerate scenarios for the progenitor system. Galaxy evolution is thought to be driven in large part by the flow of gas between galaxies and the circumgalactic medium (CGM), a halo of metal-enriched gas extending out to ≳100 kpc from each galaxy. Studying the spatial structure of the CGM holds promise for understanding these gas flow mechanisms; however, the common method of using background quasar sight lines provides minimal spatial information. Recent works have shown the utility of extended background sources such as giant gravitationally lensed arcs. Using background lensed arcs from the CSWA 38 lens system, we continuously probed, at a resolution element of about 15 kpc2, the spatial and kinematic distribution of Mg ii absorption in a star-forming galaxy at z = 0.77 (stellar mass ≈109.7M⊙, star formation rate ≈10 M⊙ yr−1) at impact parameters D ≃ 5–30 kpc. Our results present an anisotropic, optically thick medium whose absorption strength decreases with increasing impact parameter, in agreement with the statistics toward quasars and other gravitational arcs. Furthermore, we find generally low line-of-sight velocities in comparison to the relatively high velocity dispersion in the Mg ii gas (with typical σ ≈ 50 km s−1). While the galaxy itself exhibits a clear outflow (with Mg ii velocities up to ∼500 km s−1) in the down-the-barrel spectrum, the outflow component is subdominant and only weakly detected at larger impact parameters probed by the background arcs. To determine the origin of the spiral structure observed in the dust continuum emission of Elias 2–27 we analyze multiwavelength continuum ALMA data with a resolution of ∼0.″2 (∼23 au) at 0.89, 1.3, and 3.3 mm. We also study the kinematics of the disk with 13CO and C18O ALMA observations in the J = 3–2 transition. The spiral arm morphology is recovered at all wavelengths in the dust continuum observations, where we measure contrast and spectral index variations along the spiral arms and detect subtle dust-trapping signatures. We determine that the emission from the midplane is cold and interpret the optical depth results as signatures of a disk mass higher than previous constraints. From the gas data, we search for deviations from Keplerian motion and trace the morphology of the emitting surfaces and the velocity profiles. We find an azimuthally varying emission layer height in the system, large-scale emission surrounding the disk, and strong perturbations in the channel maps, colocated with the spirals. Additionally, we develop multigrain dust and gas hydrodynamical simulations of a gravitationally unstable disk and compare them to the observations. Given the large-scale emission and highly perturbed gas structure, together with the comparison of continuum observations to theoretical predictions, we propose infall-triggered gravitational instabilities as the origin for the observed spiral structure. 3C 84 (NGC 1275) is the bright radio core of the Perseus cluster. Even in the absence of strong relativistic effects, the source has been detected at γ-rays up to TeV energies. Despite its intensive study, the physical processes responsible for the high-energy emission in the source remain unanswered. We present a detailed kinematics study of the source and its connection to γ-ray emission. The subparsec-scale radio structure is dominated by slow-moving features in both the eastern and western lanes of the jet. The jet appears to have accelerated to its maximum speed within less than 125,000 gravitational radii. The fastest reliably detected speed in the jet was ∼0.9c. This leads to a minimum viewing angle to the source of ≳42° and a maximum Doppler factor of ≲1.5. Our analysis suggests the presence of multiple high-energy sites in the source. If γ-rays are associated with kinematic changes in the jet, they are being produced in both eastern and western lanes in the jet. Three γ-ray flares are contemporaneous with epochs where the slowly moving emission region splits into two subregions. We estimate the significance of these events being associated to be ∼2σ–3σ. We tested our results against theoretical predictions for magnetic-reconnection-induced mini-jets and turbulence and find them compatible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NGC 2617 attracted a lot of attention after the detection of changes in its spectral type; the geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR) are still ambiguous. In this paper, we present the high cadence (∼2 days) reverberation mapping campaign of NGC 2617 from 2019 October to 2020 May undertaken at the Lijiang 2.4 m telescope. For the first time, the velocity-resolved reverberation signature of the object was successfully detected. Both Hα and Hβ show an asymmetrical profile with a peak in the velocity-resolved time lags. For both of the lines, the lag of the line core is longer than those of the relevant wings, and the peak of the velocity-resolved lags is slightly blueshifted. These characteristics are not consistent with the theoretical prediction of the inflow, outflow or Keplerian disk model. Our observations give the time lags of Hα, Hβ, Hγ, and He i , with a ratio of τHα: τHβ: τHγ: τHe I = 1.27:1.00:0.89:0.20, which indicates a stratified structure in the BLR of the object. It is the first time that the lags of Hα and He i are obtained. Assuming a virial factor of f = 5.5 for the dispersion width of the line, the masses of the black holes derived from Hα and Hβ are and , respectively. Recent studies of warp kinematics using Gaia DR2 data have produced detections of warp precession for the first time, which greatly exceeds theoretical predictions of models. However, this detection assumes a warp model derived for a young population (few tens of megayears) to fit velocities of an average older stellar population of the thin disk (several gigayears) in Gaia-DR2 observations, which may lead to unaccounted systematic errors. Here, we recalculate the warp precession with the same approach and Gaia DR2 kinematic data, but using different warp parameters based on the fit of star counts of the Gaia DR2 sample, which has a much lower warp amplitude than the young population. When we take into account this variation of the warp amplitude with the age of the population, we find that there is no need for precession. We present X-ray analysis of the ejecta of supernova remnant (SNR) G350.1–0.3 observed with Chandra and Suzaku, clarify the ejecta's kinematics over a decade, and obtain a new observational clue to understanding the origin of the asymmetric explosion. Two images from Chandra X-ray Observatory taken in 2009 and 2018 are analyzed with several methods and enable us to measure the velocities in the plane of the sky. A maximum velocity is 4640 ± 290 km s−1 (0.218 ± 0.014 arcsec yr−1) in the eastern region in the remnant. These findings trigger us to scrutinize the Doppler effects in the spectra of the thermal emission, and the velocities in the line-of-sight direction are estimated to be 1000 km s−1. The results are confirmed by analyzing the spectra of Suzaku. Combining the proper motions and line-of-sight velocities, the ejecta's 3D velocities are ∼3000–5000 km s−1. The center of the explosion is more stringently constrained by finding the optimal time to reproduce the observed spatial expansion. Our findings that the age of the SNR is estimated at most to be 655 yr and the CCO is observed as a point source object against the SNR strengthen the "hydrodynamical kick" hypothesis on the origin of the remnant. To determine the importance of merging galaxies to galaxy evolution, it is necessary to design classification tools that can identify the different types and stages of merging galaxies. Previously, using GADGET-3/SUNRISE simulations of merging galaxies and linear discriminant analysis (LDA), we created an accurate merging galaxy classifier based on imaging predictors. Here, we develop a complementary tool, based on stellar kinematic predictors, derived from the same simulation suite. We design mock stellar velocity and velocity dispersion maps to mimic the specifications of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point (MaNGA) integral field spectroscopy (IFS) survey, and utilize an LDA to create a classification, based on a linear combination of 11 kinematic predictors. The classification varies significantly with mass ratio; the major (minor) merger classifications have a mean statistical accuracy of 80% (70%), a precision of 90% (85%), and a recall of 75% (60%). The major mergers are best identified by predictors that trace global kinematic features, while the minor mergers rely on local features that trace a secondary stellar component. While the kinematic classification is less accurate than the imaging classification, the kinematic predictors are better at identifying post-coalescence mergers. A combined imaging + kinematic classification has the potential to reveal more complete merger samples from imaging and IFS surveys such as MaNGA. We note that since the suite of simulations used to train the classifier covers a limited range of galaxy properties (i.e., the galaxies are of intermediate mass, and disk-dominated), the results may not be applicable to all MaNGA galaxies. In this paper, we collect a sample of stars observed both in LAMOST and Gaia, which have colors implying a temperature hotter than 7000 K. We train a machine-learning algorithm on LAMOST spectroscopic data which has been tagged with stellar classifications and metallicities, and use this machine to construct a catalog of blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs), together with metallicity information. Another machine is trained using Gaia parallaxes to predict absolute magnitudes for these stars. The final catalog of 13,693 BHBs is thought to be about 86% pure, with σ[Fe/H] ∼ 0.35 dex, and σG ∼ 0.31 mag. These values are confirmed via comparison to globular clusters, although a covariance error seems to affect our magnitude and abundance estimates. We analyze a subset of this catalog in the Galactic Halo. We find that BHB populations in the outer halo appear redder, which could imply a younger population, and that the metallicity gradient is relatively flat around [Fe/H] = −1.9 dex over our sample footprint. We find that our metal-rich BHB stars are on more radial velocity dispersion-dominated orbits (β ∼ 0.70) at all radii than our metal-poor BHB stars (β ∼ 0.62). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We explore the kinematics of 27 z ≳ 6 quasar host galaxies observed in [C ii ] 158 μm ([C ii ]) emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at a resolution of ≈0.″25. We find that nine of the galaxies show disturbed [C ii ] emission, due to either a close companion galaxy or a recent merger. Ten galaxies have smooth velocity gradients consistent with the emission arising from a gaseous disk. The remaining eight quasar host galaxies show no velocity gradient, suggesting that the gas in these systems is dispersion dominated. All galaxies show high velocity dispersions with a mean of 129 ± 10 km s−1. To provide an estimate of the dynamical mass within twice the half-light radius of the quasar host galaxy, we model the kinematics of the [C ii ] emission line using our publicly available kinematic fitting code, qubefit. This results in a mean dynamical mass of 5.0 ± 0.8(± 3.5) × 1010M⊙. Comparison between the dynamical mass and the mass of the supermassive black hole reveals that the sample falls above the locally derived bulge mass–black hole mass relation at 2.4σ significance. This result is robust even if we account for the large systematic uncertainties. Using several different estimators for the molecular mass, we estimate a gas mass fraction of >10%, indicating that gas makes up a large fraction of the baryonic mass of z ≳ 6 quasar host galaxies. Finally, we speculate that the large variety in [C ii ] kinematics is an indication that gas accretion onto z ≳ 6 supermassive black holes is not caused by a single precipitating factor. We present a search for new planetary-mass members of nearby young moving groups (YMGs) using astrometry for 694 T and Y dwarfs, including 447 objects with parallaxes, mostly produced by recent large parallax programs from UKIRT and Spitzer. Using the BANYAN Σ and LACEwING algorithms, we identify 30 new candidate YMG members, with spectral types of T0–T9 and distances of 10–43 pc. Some candidates have unusually red colors and/or faint absolute magnitudes compared to field dwarfs with similar spectral types, providing supporting evidence for their youth, including four early-T dwarfs. We establish one of these, the variable T1.5 dwarf 2MASS J21392676+0220226, as a new planetary-mass member (MJup) of the Carina-Near group (200 ± 50 Myr) based on its full six-dimensional kinematics, including a new parallax measurement from CFHT. The high-amplitude variability of this object is suggestive of a young age, given the coexistence of variability and youth seen in previously known YMG T dwarfs. Our four latest-type (T8–T9) YMG candidates, WISE J031624.35+430709.1, ULAS J130217.21+130851.2, WISEPC J225540.74–311841.8, and WISE J233226.49–432510.6, if confirmed, will be the first free-floating planets (≈2–6 MJup) whose ages and luminosities are compatible with both hot-start and cold-start evolutionary models, and thus overlap with the properties of the directly imaged planet 51 Eri b. Several of our early/mid-T candidates have peculiar near-infrared spectra, indicative of heterogenous photospheres or unresolved binarity. Radial velocity measurements needed for final membership assessment for most of our candidates await upcoming 20–30 m class telescopes. In addition, we compile all 15 known T7–Y1 benchmarks and derive a homogeneous set of their effective temperatures, surface gravities, radii, and masses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a new kinematic model for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using data from the Gaia Data Release 2 catalog. We identify a sample of astrometrically well-behaved red giant (RG) stars belonging to the SMC and cross-match with publicly available radial velocity (RV) catalogs. We create a 3D spatial model for the RGs, using RR Lyrae for distance distributions, and apply kinematic models with varying rotation properties and a novel tidal expansion prescription to generate mock proper motion (PM) catalogs. When we compare this series of mock catalogs to the observed RG data, we find that a combination of moderate rotation (with a magnitude of ∼10–20 km s−1 at 1 kpc from the SMC center, inclination between ∼50 and 80°, and a predominantly north-to-south line-of-nodes position angle of ∼180°) and tidal expansion (with a scaling of ∼10 km s−1 kpc−1) is required to explain the PM signatures. The exact best-fit parameters depend somewhat on whether we assess only the PMs or include the RVs as a qualitative check, leaving some tension remaining between the PM and RV conclusions. In either case, the parameter space preferred by our model is different from previously inferred rotational geometries, including from the SMC H i gas, and from the RG RV-only analyses and new SMC PM analyses, which conclude that a rotation signature is not detectable.
