The complexity of the energy levels in Fe ii has made it difficult to theoretically interpret its observational emission spectrum. However, addressing this challenge could provide valuable insights into the main sequence of QSOs using "eigenvector 1" and the chemical evolution of the Universe. Although the templates based on I Zw 1 are widely used, their universality remains unexplained. To address this, we utilized the CLOUDY spectral synthesis code to generate theoretical blends of Fe ii optical emission near the H β region. Our results indicate that the optimal cloud density and photon flux align with previous studies at gas density 1011 cm−3 and photon flux 1020.5 cm−2 s−1. We discovered a broad parameter region that fits the data well, encompassing a diverse range of densities and photon fluxes. This helps to explain the general applicability of optical templates. Additionally, we investigated the effects of different spectral energy distributions (SEDs), Eddington ratios, turbulence, and cloud column densities and found that they provided a sufficiently broad range for typical emitting clouds. We found different SEDs had a negligible impact on the template shape, further expanding the usability of empirical templates. However, they significantly affected the absolute intensity of Fe ii emission, consistent with previous research. Furthermore, we determined that a turbulence of approximately 100 km s−1 is necessary to produce sufficiently strong optical Fe ii, and either a column density greater than 1024 cm−2, which is typical for Fe ii UV emission, or an abundance higher than solar is preferred. We explore the properties of stellar kinematics and ionized gas in a sample of 1106 local (U)LIRGs from the AKARI telescope. We combine data from Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 13 to fit the spectral energy distribution (SED) of each source to constrain the contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to the total IR luminosity and estimate physical parameters such as stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR). We split our sample into AGNs and weak/non-AGNs. We find that our sample is considerably above the main sequence. The highest SFRs and stellar masses are associated with ULIRGs. We also fit the H β and H α regions to characterize the outflows. We find that the incidence of ionized gas outflows in AGN (U)LIRGs (∼72%) is much higher than that in weak/non-AGN ones (∼39%). The AGN ULIRGs have extreme outflow velocities (up to ∼2300 km s−1) and high mass-outflow rates (up to ∼60 M ⊙ yr−1). Our results suggest that starbursts are insufficient to produce such powerful outflows. We explore the correlations of SFR and specific SFR (sSFR) with ionized gas outflows. We find that AGN hosts with the highest SFRs exhibit a negative correlation between outflow velocity and sSFR. We present the first near-IR spectroscopy and joint analyses of multiwavelength observations for SDSS J082747.14+425241.1, a dust-reddened, weak broad emission-line quasar (WLQ) undergoing a remarkable broad-absorption line (BAL) transformation. The systemic redshift is more precisely measured to be z = 2.070 ± 0.001 using H β compared to z = 2.040 ± 0.003 using Mg ii from the literature, signifying an extreme Mg ii blueshift of 2140 ± 530 km sâˆ'1 relative to H β. Using the H β -based single-epoch scaling relation with a systematic uncertainty of 0.3 dex, its black hole (BH) mass and Eddington ratio are estimated to be M BH ∼ 6.1 Ă— 108 M ⊙ and λ Edd ∼ 0.71, indicative of being in a rapidly accreting phase. Our investigations confirm the WLQ nature and the LoBAL â†' HiBAL transformation, along with a factor of 2 increase in the Mg ii +Fe ii emission strength and a decrease of 0.1 in E (B âˆ' V) over two decades. The kinetic power of this LoBAL wind at R ∼ 15 pc from its BH is estimated to be ∼43% of the Eddington luminosity, sufficient for quasar feedback upon its host galaxy albeit with an order-of-magnitude uncertainty. This quasar provides a clear example of the long-sought scenario where LoBAL quasars are surrounded by dust cocoons, and wide-angle nuclear winds play a key role in the transition of red quasars evolving into the commonly seen blue quasars. The shape of the ambient circumnuclear medium (ACM) density profile can probe the history of accretion onto the central supermassive black holes in galaxies and the circumnuclear environment. However, due to the limitations of instrument resolution, the density profiles of the ACM for most galaxies remain largely unknown. In this work, we propose a novel method to measure the ACM density profile of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by the equilibrium between the radiation pressure on the warm absorbers (WAs, a type of AGN outflow) and the drag pressure from the ACM. We study the correlation between the outflow velocity and ionization parameter of WAs in each of the five Seyfert 1 galaxies (NGC 3227, NGC 3783, NGC 4051, NGC 4593, and NGC 5548), inferring that the density profile of the ACM is between n ∝ r âˆ'1.7 and n ∝ r âˆ'2.15 (n is number density and r is distance) from 0.01 pc to parsec scales in these five AGNs. Our results indicate that the ACM density profile in Seyfert 1 galaxies is steeper than the prediction by the spherically symmetric Bondi accretion model and the simulated results of the hot accretion flow, but more in line with the prediction by the standard thin-disk model. The combination of the linear size from reverberation mapping (RM) and the angular distance of the broad-line region (BLR) from spectroastrometry (SA) in active galactic nuclei can be used as a "standard ruler" to measure the Hubble constant H0. Recently, Wang et al. successfully employed this approach and estimated H0 from 3C 273. However, there may be a systematic deviation between the response-weighted radius (RM measurement) and luminosity-weighted radius (SA measurement), especially when different broad lines are adopted for size indicators (e.g., Hβ for RM and Paα for SA). Here we evaluate the size deviations measured by six pairs of hydrogen lines (e.g., Hβ, Hα, and Paα) via the locally optimally emitting cloud (LOC) models of the BLR. We find that the radius ratios K (=RSA/RRM) of the same line deviated systematically from 1 (0.85–0.88) with dispersions between 0.063 and 0.083. Surprisingly, the K values from the Paα(SA)/Hβ(RM) and Hα(SA)/Hβ(RM) pairs not only are closest to 1 but also have considerably smaller uncertainty. Considering the current technology of infrared interferometry, the Paα(SA)/Hβ(RM) pair is the ideal choice for low-redshift objects in the SARM project. In the future, the Hα(SA)/Hβ(RM) pair could be used for high-redshift luminous quasars. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occurring in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are a special class of sources with outstanding scientific significance. TDEs can generate ultrafast winds, which should almost inevitably collide with the preexisting AGN dusty tori. We perform analytical calculations and simulations on the wind–torus interactions and find such a process can generate considerable X-ray afterglow radiation several years or decades later after the TDE outburst. This provides a new origin for the years delayed X-rays in TDEs. The X-ray luminosity can reach 1041−42 erg s−1, and the light curve characteristics depend on the parameters of winds and tori. We apply the model to two TDE candidates, and provide lower limits on the masses of the disrupted stars, as well as rigorous constraints on the gas densities of tori. Our results suggest that the observations of the time delay, spectral shape, luminosity, and the light curve of the X-ray afterglow can be used to constrain the physical parameters of both TDE winds and tori, including the wind velocity, wind density, cloud density, and cloud size. We perform a systematic search for high-redshift (1.5) extreme variability quasars (EVQs) using repeat spectra from the Sixteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which provides a baseline spanning up to ∼18 yr in the observed frame. We compile a sample of 348 EVQs with a maximum continuum variability at rest frame 1450 Å of more than 100% (i.e., δV ≡ (Max − Min)/Mean > 1). The EVQs show a range of emission-line variability, including 23 where at least one line in our redshift range disappears below detectability, which can then be seen as analogous to low-redshift changing-look quasars (CLQs). Importantly, spurious CLQs caused by problematic SDSS spectral flux calibration, e.g., fiber-drop issue, have been rejected. The similar properties (e.g., continuum/line, difference-composite spectra and Eddington ratio) of normal EVQs and CLQs imply that they are basically the same physical population with analogous intrinsic variability mechanisms, as a tail of a continuous distribution of normal quasar properties. In addition, we find no reliable evidence (≲1σ) to support that CLQs are a subset of EVQs with less efficient accretion. Finally, we also confirm the antibreathing of C iv (i.e., the line width increases as luminosity increases) in EVQs and find that in addition to the ∼0.4 dex systematic uncertainty in single-epoch C iv virial black hole mass estimates, an extra scatter of ∼0.3 dex will be introduced by extreme variability. The rest-frame UV/optical variability of the quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82 is used to test the Corona-Heated Accretion-disk Reprocessing (CHAR) model of Sun et al. We adopt our CHAR model and the observed black hole masses (MBH) and luminosities (L) to generate mock light curves that share the same measurement noise and sampling as the real observations. Without any fine-tuning, our CHAR model can satisfactorily reproduce the observed ensemble structure functions for different MBH, L, and rest-frame wavelengths. Our analyses reveal that a luminosity-dependent bolometric correction is disfavored over the constant bolometric correction for UV/optical luminosities. Our work demonstrates the possibility of extracting quasar properties (e.g., the bolometric correction or the dimensionless viscosity parameter) by comparing the physical CHAR model with quasar light curves.
