We present ∼300 stellar metallicity measurements in two faint M31 dwarf galaxies, Andromeda XVI (M V = −7.5) and Andromeda XXVIII (M V = –8.8), derived using metallicity-sensitive calcium H and K narrowband Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These are the first individual stellar metallicities in And XVI (95 stars). Our And XXVIII sample (191 stars) is a factor of ∼15 increase over literature metallicities. For And XVI, we measure 〈 [Fe/H] 〉 = − 2.17 − 0.05 + 0.05 , σ [Fe/H] = 0.33 − 0.07 + 0.07 , and ∇[Fe/H] = −0.23 ± 0.15 dex R e − 1 . We find that And XVI is more metal-rich than Milky Way ultrafaint dwarf galaxies of similar luminosity, which may be a result of its unusually extended star formation history. For And XXVIII, we measure 〈 [Fe/H] 〉 = − 1.95 − 0.04 + 0.04 , σ [Fe/H] = 0.34 − 0.05 + 0.05 , and ∇[Fe/H]= −0.46 ± 0.10 dex R e − 1 , placing it on the dwarf galaxy mass–metallicity relation. Neither galaxy has a metallicity distribution function (MDF) with an abrupt metal-rich truncation, suggesting that star formation fell off gradually. The stellar metallicity gradient measurements are among the first for faint (L ≲ 106 L ⊙) galaxies outside the Milky Way halo. Both galaxies' gradients are consistent with predictions from the FIRE simulations, where an age–gradient strength relationship is the observational consequence of stellar feedback that produces dark matter cores. We include a catalog for community spectroscopic follow-up, including 19 extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] < –3.0) star candidates, which make up 7% of And XVI's MDF and 6% of And XXVIII's. The stellar shells surrounding an elliptical galaxy, as remnants of a dwarf galaxy disrupted during merging, reveal the distribution of energy and angular momentum of the progenitor dwarf galaxy. We develop a semi-analytical model to describe the changes in energy Δ E i and angular momentum Δ Lz i for particles during the first infall. We show that these changes, induced by the self-gravity of the progenitor, are important in broadening the initial energy distribution of the Plummer or Hernquist progenitor model. Consequently, these changes are crucial in shaping the shells. In the freefall stage following the disintegration of the progenitor potential, particles are no longer bound by self-gravity but move within the gravitational potential of the target galaxy. We investigate the relationship between the radial period and the energy of particles undergoing radial motion. We show that an accurate model of the energy range of the dwarf galaxy at disruption is essential to predict the number of observable shells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The first generations of stars left their chemical fingerprints on metal-poor stars in the Milky Way and its surrounding dwarf galaxies. While instantaneous and homogeneous enrichment implies that groups of conatal stars should have the same element abundances, small amplitudes of abundance scatter are seen at fixed [Fe/H]. Measurements of intrinsic abundance scatter have been made with small high-resolution spectroscopic data sets where measurement uncertainty is small compared to this scatter. In this work, we present a method to use mid-resolution survey data, which have larger errors, to make this measurement. Using APOGEE Data Release 17, we calculate the intrinsic scatter of Al, O, Mg, Si, Ti, Ni, and Mn relative to Fe for 333 metal-poor stars across six classical dwarf galaxies around the Milky Way, and 1604 stars across 19 globular clusters (GCs). We calibrate the reported abundance errors in bins of signal-to-noise ratio and [Fe/H] using a high-fidelity halo data set. Applying these calibrated errors to the APOGEE data, we find small amplitudes of average intrinsic abundance scatter in dwarf galaxies ranging from 0.03 to 0.09 dex, with a median value of 0.047 dex. For the GCs, we find intrinsic scatters ranging from 0.01 to 0.11 dex, with particularly high scatter for Al and O. Our measurements of intrinsic abundance scatter place important upper bounds, which are limited by our calibration, on the intrinsic scatter in these systems, as well as constraints on their underlying star formation history and mixing that we can look to simulations to interpret. The ability to accurately discern active massive black holes (BHs) in nearby dwarf galaxies is paramount to understanding the origins and processes of "seed" BHs in the early Universe. We present Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of a sample of three local dwarf galaxies (M * ≤ 3 × 109 M ⊙, z ≤ 0.15) previously identified as candidates for hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN). The galaxies were selected from the NASA-Sloan Atlas with spatially coincident X-ray detections in the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey. Our new Chandra data reveal three X-ray point sources in two of the target galaxies with luminosities between log(L 2−10 keV [erg s−1]) = 39.1 and 40.4. Our results support the presence of an AGN in these two galaxies and an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in one of them. For the AGNs, we estimate BH masses of M BH ∼ 105−6 M ⊙ and Eddington ratios on the order of ∼10−3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although supermassive black holes (SMBHs) reside in the heart of virtually every massive galaxy, it remains debated whether dwarf galaxies commonly host SMBHs. Because low-mass galaxies may retain memory of the assembly history of their black holes (BHs), probing the BH occupation fraction of local dwarf galaxies might offer insights into the growth and seeding mechanisms of the first BHs. In this work, we exploit the Western half of the eROSITA all-sky survey (covering 20,000 deg2) and compile a catalog of accreting SMBHs in local (D < 200 Mpc) dwarf galaxies. Cleaning our sample from X-ray background sources, X-ray binaries, and ultraluminous X-ray sources, we identify 74 active galactic nucleus (AGN)–dwarf galaxy pairs. Using this large and uniform sample, we derive the luminosity function of the dwarf galaxy AGN, fitting it with a power-law function and obtaining d N / d L X = (15.9 ± 2.2) × L X − 1.63 ± 0.05 . Measuring the offset between the dwarf galaxies' centroids and the X-ray sources, we find that ≈50% of the AGN are likely off-nuclear, in agreement with theoretical predictions. We compare the BH-to-stellar mass relation of our sample with the local and high-redshift relations, finding that our sources better adhere to the former, which suggests that local AGN across different mass scales undergo similar growth histories. Finally, we compare our sources with semianalytical models: while our sample's shallowness prevents distinguishing between different seeding models, we find that the data favor models that keep SMBHs in dwarf galaxies active at a moderate rate, motivating model improvement by comparison to AGN in the dwarf galaxy regime. We present a hierarchical Bayesian pipeline, BP3M, that measures positions, parallaxes, and proper motions (PMs) for cross-matched sources between Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and Gaia—even for sparse fields (N * < 10 per image)—expanding from the recent GaiaHub tool. This technique uses Gaia-measured astrometry as priors to predict the locations of sources in HST images, and is therefore able to put the HST images onto a global reference frame without the use of background galaxies/QSOs. Testing our publicly available code in the Fornax and Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we measure PMs that are a median of 8–13 times more precise than Gaia DR3 alone for 20.5 < G < 21 mag. We are able to explore the effect of observation strategies on BP3M astrometry using synthetic data, finding an optimal strategy to improve parallax and position precision at no cost to the PM uncertainty. Using 1619 HST images in the sparse COSMOS field (median nine Gaia sources per HST image), we measure BP3M PMs for 2640 unique sources in the 16 < G < 21.5 mag range, 25% of which have no Gaia PMs; the median BP3M PM uncertainty for 20.25 < G < 20.75 mag sources is 0.44 mas yr−1 compared to 1.03 mas yr−1 from Gaia, while the median BP3M PM uncertainty for sources without Gaia-measured PMs (20.75 < G < 21.5 mag) is 1.16 mas yr−1. The statistics that underpin the BP3M pipeline are a generalized way of combining position measurements from different images, epochs, and telescopes, which allows information to be shared between surveys and archives to achieve higher astrometric precision than that from each catalog alone. With a luminosity similar to that of Milky Way dwarf spheroidal systems like Sextans, but a spatial extent similar to that of ultra-diffuse galaxies, Andromeda (And) XIX is an unusual satellite of M31. To investigate the origin of this galaxy, we measure chemical abundances for And XIX derived from medium-resolution (R ∼ 6000) spectra from the Deep Extragalactic Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope. We coadd 79 red giant branch stars, grouped by photometric metallicity, in order to obtain a sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio to measure 20 [Fe/H] and [ α /Fe] abundances via spectral synthesis. The latter are the first such measurements for And XIX. The mean metallicity we derive for And XIX places it ∼2 σ higher than the present-day stellar mass–metallicity relation for Local Group dwarf galaxies, potentially indicating it has experienced tidal stripping. A loss of gas and associated quenching during such a process, which prevents the extended star formation necessary to produce shallow [ α /Fe]–[Fe/H] gradients in massive systems, is also consistent with the steeply decreasing [ α /Fe]–[Fe/H] trend we observe. In combination with the diffuse structure and disturbed kinematic properties of And XIX, this suggests tidal interactions, rather than galaxy mergers, are strong contenders for its formation. The chemical abundances of Milky Way's (MW's) satellites reflect their star formation histories (SFHs), yet, due to the difficulty of determining the ages of old stars, the SFHs of most satellites are poorly measured. Ongoing and upcoming surveys will obtain around 10 times more medium-resolution spectra for stars in satellites than are currently available. To correctly extract SFHs from large samples of chemical abundances, the relationship between chemical abundances and SFHs needs to be clarified. Here, we perform a high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulation of a MW-like galaxy with detailed models of star formation, supernova (SN) feedback, and metal diffusion. We quantify SFHs, metallicity distribution functions, and the α -element (Mg, Ca, and Si) abundances in satellites of the host galaxy. We find that star formation in most simulated satellites is quenched before infalling to their host. Star formation episodes in simulated satellites are separated by a few hundred Myr owing to SN feedback; each star formation event produces groups of stars with similar [ α /Fe] and [Fe/H]. We then perform a mock observation of the upcoming Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) observations. We find that Subaru PFS will be able to detect distinct groups of stars in [ α /Fe] versus [Fe/H] space, produced by episodic star formation. This result means that episodic SFHs can be estimated from the chemical abundances of ≳1000 stars determined with medium-resolution spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyze four epochs of Hubble Space Telescope imaging over 18 yr for the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We measure precise proper motions for hundreds of stars and combine these with existing line-of-sight (LOS) velocities. This provides the first radially resolved 3D velocity dispersion profiles for any dwarf galaxy. These constrain the intrinsic velocity anisotropy and resolve the mass–anisotropy degeneracy. We solve the Jeans equations in oblate axisymmetric geometry to infer the mass profile. We find the velocity dispersion to be radially anisotropic along the symmetry axis and tangentially anisotropic in the equatorial plane, with a globally averaged value β B ¯ = − 0.20 − 0.53 + 0.28 , (where 1 – β B ≡ 〈 v tan 2 〉 / 〈 v rad 2 〉 in 3D). The logarithmic dark matter (DM) density slope over the observed radial range, Γdark, is − 0.83 − 0.37 + 0.32 , consistent with the inner cusp predicted in ΛCDM cosmology. As expected given Draco's low mass and ancient star formation history, it does not appear to have been dissolved by baryonic processes. We rule out cores larger than 487, 717, and 942 pc at 1 σ, 2 σ, and 3 σ confidence, respectively, thus imposing important constraints on the self-interacting DM cross section. Spherical models yield biased estimates for both the velocity anisotropy and the inferred slope. The circular velocity at our outermost data point (900 pc) is 24.19 − 2.97 + 6.31 km s − 1 . We infer a dynamical distance of 75.37 − 4.00 + 4.73 kpc and show that Draco has a modest LOS rotation, with v / σ = 0.22 ± 0.09 . Henize 2–10 is a dwarf galaxy experiencing positive black hole (BH) feedback from a radio-detected low-luminosity active galactic nucleus. Previous Green Bank Telescope (GBT) observations detected a H2O "kilomaser" in Henize 2–10, but the low angular resolution (33″) left the location and origin of the maser ambiguous. We present new Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of the H2O maser line at 22.23508 GHz in Henize 2–10 with ∼2″ resolution. These observations reveal two maser sources distinct in position and velocity. The first maser source is spatially coincident with the known BH outflow and the region of triggered star formation ∼70 pc to the east. Combined with the broad width of the maser (W 50 ∼ 66 km s−1), this confirms our hypothesis that part of the maser detected with the GBT is produced by the impact of the BH outflow shocking the dense molecular gas along the flow and at the interface of the eastern star-forming region. The second maser source lies to the southeast, far from the central BH, and has a narrow width (W 50 ∼ 8 km s−1), suggesting a star formation–related origin. This work has revealed the nature of the H2O kilomaser in Henize 2–10 and illustrates the first known connection between outflow-driven H2O masers and positive BH feedback. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an atlas and follow-up spectroscopic observations of 87 thin stream-like structures detected with the STREAMFINDER algorithm in Gaia DR3, of which 28 are new discoveries. Here, we focus on using these streams to refine mass models of the Galaxy. Fits with a double-power-law halo with the outer power-law slope set to − β h = −3 yield an inner power-law slope of − γ h = - (0.97 − 0.21 + 0.17 ) , a scale radius of r 0 , h = 14.7 − 1.0 + 4.7 kpc , a halo density flattening q m, h = 0.75 ± 0.03, and a local dark matter density of ρ h,⊙ = 0.0114 ± 0.0007 M ⊙ pc−3. Freeing β yields β = 2.53 − 0.16 + 0.42 , but this value is heavily influenced by our chosen virial mass limit. The stellar disks are found to have a combined mass of 4.20 − 0.53 + 0.44 × 10 10 M ⊙ , with the thick disk contributing 12.4% ± 0.7% to the local stellar surface density. The scale lengths of the thin and thick disks are 2.17 − 0.08 + 0.18 and 1.62 − 0.13 + 0.72 kpc , respectively, while their scale heights are 0.347 − 0.010 + 0.007 and 0.86 − 0.02 + 0.03 kpc , respectively. The virial mass of the favored model is M 200 = 1.09 − 0.14 + 0.19 × 10 12 M ⊙ , while the mass inside of 50 kpc is M R <50 = 0.46 ± 0.03 × 1012 M ⊙. We introduce the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) into the derived potential models, and fit the Orphan stream therein, finding a mass for the LMC that is consistent with recent estimates. Some salient highlights include the nearby trailing arm of ω Cen, and a nearby very metal-poor stream that was once a satellite of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. Finally, we unambiguously detect a hot component around the GD-1 stream, consistent with it having been tidally preprocessed within its own dark matter subhalo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We survey the young star cluster population in the dwarf galaxy NGC 4449 with the goal of investigating how stellar feedback may depend on the clusters' properties. Using ultraviolet (UV)–optical–near-infrared photometry obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, we have recovered 99 compact sources exhibiting emission in the Pa β hydrogen recombination line. Our analysis reveals these sources possess masses of 102 < M ⊙ < 105, ages of 1–20 Myr, and a color excess E (B − V) in the range 0–1.4. After selecting clusters with masses above 3000 M ⊙ to mitigate stochastic sampling of the stellar initial mass function, we find that our IR-selected clusters have a median mass ∼ 7 × 103 M ⊙ and remain embedded in their surrounding gas and dust for 5–6 Myr. In contrast, line-emitting sources selected from existing UV/optical catalogs have a median mass ∼ 3.5 × 104 M ⊙ and have cleared their surroundings by 4 Myr. We further find that the environment in NGC 4449 has too low pressure to drive these differences. We interpret these findings as evidence that the clearing timescale from presupernova and supernova feedback is cluster mass dependent. Even in clusters with masses ∼ 7000 M ⊙, stochastic sampling of the upper end of the stellar initial mass function is present, randomly decreasing the number of massive stars available to inject energy and momentum into the surrounding medium. This effect may increase the clearing timescales in these clusters by decreasing the effectiveness of both presupernova and supernova feedback; neither models nor observations have so far explored such dependence explicitly. Using cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations, we explore the properties of subhalos in Milky Way analogs that contain a subcomponent of atomic dark matter (ADM). ADM differs from cold dark matter (CDM) due to the presence of self-interactions that lead to energy dissipation, analogous to standard model baryons. This model can arise in dark sectors that are natural and theoretically motivated extensions to the standard model. The simulations used in this work were carried out using GIZMO and utilize the FIRE-2 galaxy formation physics in the standard model baryonic sector. For the parameter points we consider, the ADM gas cools efficiently, allowing it to collapse to the center of subhalos. This increases a subhalo's central density and affects its orbit, with more subhalos surviving small pericentric passages. The subset of subhalos that host satellite galaxies have cuspier density profiles and smaller stellar half-mass radii relative to CDM. The entire population of dwarf galaxies produced in the ADM simulations is more compact than those seen in CDM simulations, unable to reproduce the entire diversity of observed dwarf galaxy structures. Additionally, we also identify a population of highly compact subhalos that consist nearly entirely of ADM and form in the central region of the host, where they can leave distinctive imprints in the baryonic disk. This work presents the first detailed exploration of subhalo properties in a strongly dissipative dark matter scenario, providing intuition for how other regions of ADM parameter space, as well as other dark sector models, would impact galactic-scale observables. We use a suite of hydrodynamics simulations of the interstellar medium (ISM) within a galactic disk, which includes radiative transfer, a nonequilibrium model of molecular hydrogen, and a realistic model for star formation and feedback, to study the structure of the ISM and H2 abundance as a function of local ISM properties. We show that the star formation rate and structure of the ISM are sensitive to the metallicity of the gas with a progressively smoother density distribution with decreasing metallicity. In addition to the well-known trend of the H I– H 2 transition shifting to higher densities with decreasing metallicity, the maximum achieved molecular fraction in the ISM drops drastically at Z ≲ 0.2 Z ⊙ as the formation time of H2 becomes much longer than a typical lifetime of dense regions of the ISM. We present accurate fitting formulae for both volumetric and projected f H 2 measured on different scales as a function of gas metallicity, UV radiation field, and gas density. We show that when the formulae are applied to the patches in the simulated galaxy, the overall molecular gas mass is reproduced to better than a factor of ≲1.5 across the entire range of metallicities and scales. We also show that the presented fit is considerably more accurate than any of the previous f H 2 models and fitting formulae in the low-metallicity regime. The fit can thus be used for modeling molecular gas in low-resolution simulations and semi-analytic models of galaxy formation in the dwarf and high-redshift regimes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present ionizing spectra estimated at 13.6–100 eV for 10 dwarf galaxies with strong high-ionization lines of He ii λ 4686 and [Ne v ] λ 3426 ([Ne iv ] λ 2424) at z = 0 (z = 8) that are identified in our Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and the literature (the JWST Early Release Observations program). With the flux ratios of these high-ionization lines and >10 low-ionization lines of hydrogen, helium, oxygen, neon, and sulfur, we determine ionizing spectra consisting of stellar and nonthermal power-law radiation by photoionization modeling with free parameters of nebular properties, including metallicity and ionization parameter, canceling out abundance ratio differences. We find that all of the observed flux ratios are well reproduced by the photoionization models with the power-law index α EUV of α EUV ∼ (–1) − 0 and the luminosity L EUV of L EUV ∼ 1040–1042 erg s−1 at ∼55–100 eV for six galaxies, while four galaxies include large systematics in α EUV caused by stellar radiation contamination. We then compare α EUV and L EUV of these six galaxies with those predicted by the black hole (BH) accretion disk models and find that α EUV and L EUV are similar to those of the intermediate-mass BHs (IMBHs) in BH accretion disk models, albeit with possibilities of the other scenarios. Confirming these results with a known IMBH having a mass M BH of M BH = 105.75 M ⊙, we find that four local galaxies and one z = 7.665 galaxy have ionizing spectra consistent with those of IMBHs with M BH ∼ 103–105 M ⊙. We study the size and structure of globular cluster (GC) systems of 118 early-type galaxies from the NGVS, MATLAS, and ACSVCS surveys. Fitting Sérsic profiles, we investigate the relationship between effective radii of GC systems (R e,gc) and galaxy properties. GC systems are 2–4 times more extended than host galaxies across the entire stellar mass range of our sample (108.3 M ⊙ < M * < 1011.6 M ⊙). The relationship between R e,gc and galaxy stellar mass exhibits a characteristic "knee" at a stellar mass of M p ≃ 1010.8, similar to the galaxy R e –stellar mass relationship. We present a new characterization of the traditional blue and red GC color subpopulations, describing them with respect to host galaxy (g ′ − i ′) color (Δgi): GCs with similar colors to their hosts have a "red" Δgi, and those significantly bluer GCs have a "blue" Δgi. The GC populations with red Δgi, even in dwarf galaxies, are twice as extended as the stars, suggesting that formation or survival mechanisms favor the outer regions. We find a tight correlation between R e,gc and the total number of GCs, with intrinsic scatter ≲0.1 dex spanning two and three orders of magnitude in size and number, respectively. This holds for both red and blue subpopulations, albeit with different slopes. Assuming that N GC,Total correlates with M 200, we find that the red GC systems have effective radii of roughly 1%–5% R 200, while the blue GC systems in massive galaxies can have sizes as large as ∼10% R 200. Environmental dependence on R e,gc is also found, with lower-density environments exhibiting more extended GC systems at fixed mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galaxy interactions and mergers can enhance or reduce star formation, but a complete understanding of the involved processes is still lacking. The effect of dwarf galaxy mergers is even less clear than their massive counterpart. We present a study on a dwarf merger remnant in the Virgo cluster, VCC322, which might form a triple system with VCC334 and VCC319. We identify a prominent long and straight tail-like substructure that has a size comparable to its host galaxy VCC322. By comparing the color–color (g − r versus r − H) distribution with simple stellar population models, we infer that the metallicity and stellar age of this tail are Z ⋆ ∼ 0.02 Z ⊙ and t ⋆ ∼ 10 Gyr, respectively. In VCC319, we find a sign of isophotal twisting. This suggests that VCC319 may be subject to tidal interaction. An analysis of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey optical spectra of VCC322 indicates mass- and light-weighted ages of about 109.8 yr and 107.5 yr, respectively, indicating an ongoing star formation activity. However, the star formation in VCC322 seems suppressed when compared to other star-forming dwarfs of comparable stellar masses. Our finding of shock excitation of optical emission lines indicates that interaction-induced shock may contribute to the heating of cold gas and suppression of star formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a population of 11 of the faintest (>25.5 AB mag) short gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies. We model their sparse available observations using the stellar population inference code Prospector- β and develop a novel implementation to incorporate the galaxy mass–radius relation. Assuming these hosts are randomly drawn from the galaxy population and conditioning this draw on their observed flux and size in a few photometric bands, we determine that these hosts have dwarf galaxy stellar masses of 7.0 ≲ log (M * / M ⊙) ≲ 9.1 . This is striking as only 14% of short GRB hosts with previous inferred stellar masses had M * ≲ 109 M ⊙. We further show these short GRBs have smaller physical and host-normalized offsets than the rest of the population, suggesting that the majority of their neutron star (NS) merger progenitors were retained within their hosts. The presumably shallow potentials of these hosts translate to small escape velocities of ∼5.5–80 km s−1, indicative of either low postsupernova systemic velocities or short inspiral times. While short GRBs with identified dwarf host galaxies now comprise ≈14% of the total Swift-detected population, a number are likely missing in the current population, as larger systemic velocities (observed from the Galactic NS population) would result in highly offset short GRBs and less secure host associations. However, the revelation of a population of short GRBs retained in low-mass host galaxies offers a natural explanation for the observed r -process enrichment via NS mergers in Local Group dwarf galaxies, and has implications for gravitational-wave follow-up strategies. Recent advances in photon detectors have provided exceptional sensitivities to dark matter with high angular resolution. Motivated by this, we present a detailed study of photon flux from dark matter decay in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) by focusing on the detectors with arcsecond-level field of view and/or angular resolution. We propose to use differential D -factors since such detectors are sensitive to their dark matter distributions. We carefully estimate the differential D -factors of 35 dSphs. By using the differential D -factors, it turns out that the resulting signal flux can have a more than O (1–10) enhancement compared to conventional estimations. Based on this analysis, we find that the Infrared Camera and Spectrograph (IRCS) installed on the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope can be an excellent dark matter detector for the mass in the eV range, particularly axion-like particles (ALPs). Observing the Draco or Ursa Major II dSphs with the IRCS for O (1) night will enable us to place the most stringent bound for the ALP dark matter in the mass range of 1 eV ≲ m a ≲ 2 eV. The nearby dwarf galaxy POX 52 at z = 0.021 hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a black hole (BH) mass of M BH ∼ 105–6 M ⊙ and an Eddington ratio of ∼0.1–1. This object provides the rare opportunity to study both AGN and host-galaxy properties in a low-mass highly accreting system. To do so, we collected its multiwavelength data from X-ray to radio. First, we construct a spectral energy distribution, and by fitting it with AGN and host-galaxy components, we constrain AGN-disk and dust-torus components. Then, while considering the AGN-disk emission, we decompose optical Hubble Space Telescope images. As a result, it is found that a classical bulge component is probably present, and its mass (M bulge) is consistent with an expected value from a local relation. Lastly, we analyze new quasi-simultaneous X-ray (0.2–30 keV) data obtained by the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and XMM-Newton. The X-ray spectrum can be reproduced by multicolor blackbody, warm and hot coronae, and disk and torus reflection components. Based on this, the spin is estimated to be a spin = 0.998−0.814, which could suggest that most of the current BH mass was achieved by prolonged mass accretion. Given the presence of the bulge, POX 52 would have undergone a galaxy merger, while the M BH– M bulge relation and the inferred prolonged accretion could suggest that AGN feedback occurred. Regarding the AGN structure, the spectral slope of the hot corona, its relative strength to the bolometric emission, and the torus structure are found to be consistent with Eddington-ratio dependencies found for nearby AGNs. We investigate how patchy reionization affects the star formation history (SFH) and stellar metallicity of ultrafaint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). Patchy reionization refers to varying ultraviolet background strengths depending on a galaxy's environment. Recent observations highlight the significance of this effect on UFDs, as UFDs can have different SFHs depending on their relative position with respect to their host halo during the period of reionization. However, most cosmological hydrodynamic simulations do not consider environmental factors such as patchy reionization, and the effect of reionization is typically applied homogeneously. Using a novel approach to implement patchy reionization, we show how SFHs of simulated UFDs can change. Our cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations focus on UFD analogs with M vir ∼ 109 M ⊙, M * ≲ 105 M ⊙ at z = 0. We find that patchy reionization can weaken the effect of reionization by 2 orders of magnitude up to z = 3, enabling late star formation in half of the simulated UFDs, with quenching times ∼460 Myr later than those with homogeneous reionization. We also show that halo merger and mass assembly can affect the SFHs of simulated UFDs, in addition to patchy reionization. The average stellar iron-to-hydrogen ratio, [Fe/H], of the simulated UFDs with patchy reionization increases by 0.22–0.42 dex. Finally, our findings suggest that patchy reionization could be responsible for the extended SFHs of Magellanic UFDs compared to non-Magellanic UFDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation mechanism of high-concentration dwarf galaxies is still a mystery. We perform a comparative study of the intrinsic shape of nearby low-mass galaxies with different stellar concentration. The intrinsic shape is parameterized by the intermediate-to-major axis ratios B/A and the minor-to-major axis ratios C/A of triaxial ellipsoidal models. Our galaxies (107.5 M ⊙ < M ⋆ < 1010.0 M ⊙) are selected to have spectroscopic redshift from SDSS or GAMA and have broadband optical images from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) wide-layer survey. The deep HSC-SSP images allow to measure the apparent axis ratios q at galactic radii beyond the central star-forming area of our galaxies. We infer the intrinsic axis ratios based on the q distributions. We find that (1) our galaxies have typical intrinsic shape similarly close to be oblate (μ B/A ∼ 0.9–1), regardless of the concentration, stellar mass, star formation activity, and local environment (being central or satellite); (2) galaxies with the highest concentration tend to have intrinsic thickness similar to or (in virtually all cases) slightly thinner (i.e., smaller mean μ C/A or equivalently lower triaxiality) than ordinary galaxies, regardless of other properties explored here. This appears to be in contrast with the expectation of the classic merger scenario for high-concentration galaxies. Given the lack of a complete understanding of dwarf–dwarf merger, we cannot draw a definite conclusion about the relevance of mergers in the formation of high-concentration dwarfs. We study the morphologies and structures of 57 dwarf galaxies that are representative of the general population of dwarf galaxies and compare their demographics to a sample of dwarf galaxies hosting optically selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The two samples span the same galaxy stellar mass (109 ≲ M ⋆/ M ⊙ ≲ 109.5) and color range, and the observations are well-matched in physical resolution. The fractions of irregular galaxies (14%) and early types/ellipticals (∼18%) are nearly identical among the two samples. However, among galaxies with disks (the majority of each sample), the AGN hosts almost always have a detectable (pseudo)bulge, while a large fraction of the non-AGN hosts are pure disk galaxies with no detectable (pseudo)bulge. Central point sources of light consistent with nuclear star clusters are detected in many of the non-AGN hosts. In contrast, central point sources detected in the AGN hosts are, on average, more than 2 orders of magnitude more luminous, suggesting the point sources in these objects are dominated by AGN light. The preference for (pseudo)bulges in dwarf AGN hosts may inform searches for massive black holes in dwarf galaxies and attempts to constrain the black hole occupation fraction, which, in turn, has implications for our understanding of black hole seeding mechanisms. We examine the quenching characteristics of 328 isolated dwarf galaxies 10 8 < M star / M ⊙ < 10 10 within the Romulus25 cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Using mock-observation methods, we identify isolated dwarf galaxies with quenched star formation and make direct comparisons to the quenched fraction in the NASA Sloan Atlas (NSA). Similar to other cosmological simulations, we find a population of quenched, isolated dwarf galaxies below M star < 109 M ⊙ not detected within the NSA. We find that the presence of massive black holes (MBHs) in Romulus25 is largely responsible for the quenched, isolated dwarfs, while isolated dwarfs without an MBH are consistent with quiescent fractions observed in the field. Quenching occurs between z = 0.5–1, during which the available supply of star-forming gas is heated or evacuated by MBH feedback. Mergers or interactions seem to play little to no role in triggering the MBH feedback. At low stellar masses, M star ≲ 109.3 M ⊙, quenching proceeds across several Gyr as the MBH slowly heats up gas in the central regions. At higher stellar masses, M star ≳ 109.3 M ⊙, quenching occurs rapidly within 1 Gyr, with the MBH evacuating gas from the central few kpc of the galaxy and driving it to the outskirts of the halo. Our results indicate the possibility of substantial star formation suppression via MBH feedback within dwarf galaxies in the field. On the other hand, the apparent overquenching of dwarf galaxies due to MBH suggests that higher-resolution and/or better modeling is required for MBHs in dwarfs, and quenched fractions offer the opportunity to constrain current models. We study satellite counts and quenched fractions for satellites of Milky Way analogs in Romulus25, a large-volume cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Depending on the definition of a Milky Way analog, we have between 66 and 97 Milky Way analogs in Romulus25, a 25 Mpc per-side uniform volume simulation. We use these analogs to quantify the effect of environment and host properties on satellite populations. We find that the number of satellites hosted by a Milky Way analog increases predominantly with host stellar mass, while environment, as measured by the distance to a Milky Way–mass or larger halo, may have a notable impact in high isolation. Similarly, we find that the satellite quenched fraction for our analogs also increases with host stellar mass, and potentially in higher-density environments. These results are robust for analogs within 3 Mpc of another Milky Way–mass or larger halo, the environmental parameter space where the bulk of our sample resides. We place these results in the context of observations through comparisons to the Exploration of Local VolumE Satellites and Satellites Around Galactic Analogs surveys. Our results are robust to changes in Milky Way analog selection criteria, including those that mimic observations. Finally, as our samples naturally include Milky Way–Andromeda pairs, we examine quenched fractions in pairs versus isolated systems. We find potential evidence, though not conclusive, that pairs, defined as being within 1 Mpc of another Milky Way–mass or larger halo, may have higher satellite quenched fractions. We present the lifetime star formation histories (SFHs) for six ultrafaint dwarf (UFD; M V > − 7.0, 4.9 < log 10 (M * (z = 0) / M ⊙) < 5.5) satellite galaxies of M31 based on deep color–magnitude diagrams constructed from Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These are the first SFHs obtained from the oldest main-sequence turnoff of UFDs outside the halo of the Milky Way (MW). We find that five UFDs formed at least 50% of their stellar mass by z = 5 (12.6 Gyr ago), similar to known UFDs around the MW, but that 10%–40% of their stellar mass formed at later times. We uncover one remarkable UFD, And xiii, which formed only 10% of its stellar mass by z = 5, and 75% in a rapid burst at z ∼ 2–3, a result that is robust to choices of underlying stellar model and is consistent with its predominantly red horizontal branch. This "young" UFD is the first of its kind and indicates that not all UFDs are necessarily quenched by reionization, which is consistent with predictions from several cosmological simulations of faint dwarf galaxies. SFHs of the combined MW and M31 samples suggest reionization did not homogeneously quench UFDs. We find that the least-massive MW UFDs (M *(z = 5) ≲ 5 × 104 M ⊙) are likely quenched by reionization, whereas more-massive M31 UFDs (M *(z = 5) ≳ 105 M ⊙) may only have their star formation suppressed by reionization and quench at a later time. We investigate the impact of binary orbital motions on the dynamical modeling of dwarf galaxies with intrinsic line-of-sight velocity dispersions ( σ v r ) of 1–9 km s−1. Using dwarf galaxies from the auriga level-2 and level-3 simulations, we apply the Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion modeling to tracer stars before and after including binaries to recover the dynamical masses. The recovered total masses within the half-mass radius of tracers, M (< r half), are always inflated due to binary motions, with greater inflations occurring for smaller σ v r . However, many dwarf galaxies experience central density deflated due to binary motions, with little dependence on σ v r . This is due to the negative radial gradients in the velocity dispersion profiles, with the fractional inflation in σ v r due to binaries more significant in outskirts. An extreme binary fraction of 70% can lead to central density deflation of up to 10%–20% at 3 km s−1 < σ v r < 8 km s−1, with M (< r half) inflated by 4% at 9 km s−1 and up to 15% at 3 km s−1. A lower binary fraction of 36% leads to similar deflations, with the inflations decreasing to approximately 10% at 3 km s−1 and becoming statistically insignificant. The choice of binary orbit distribution models does not result in significant differences, and observational errors tend to slightly weaken the deflations in the recovered central density. Two observations separated by 1 yr to exclude binaries lead to almost zero inflations/deflations for a binary fraction of 36% over 3 km s−1 < σ v r < 9 km s−1. For σ v r ∼ 1 km s−1 to 3 km s−1, a binary fraction of 70% (36%) still results in 60% (30%) to 10% (1%) of inflations in M (< r half), even with two-epoch observation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantifying the connection between galaxies and their host dark matter halos has been key for testing cosmological models on various scales. Below M ⋆ ∼ 109 M ⊙, such studies have primarily relied on the satellite galaxy population orbiting the Milky Way (MW). Here we present new constraints on the connection between satellite galaxies and their host dark matter subhalos using the largest sample of satellite galaxies in the Local Volume (D ≲ 12 Mpc) to date. We use 250 confirmed and 71 candidate dwarf satellites around 27 MW-like hosts from the Exploration of Local VolumE Satellites (ELVES) Survey and use the semianalytical SatGen model for predicting the population of dark matter subhalos expected in the same volume. Through a Bayesian model comparison of the observed and the forward-modeled satellite stellar mass functions (SSMFs), we infer the satellite stellar-to-halo mass relation. We find that the observed SSMF is best reproduced when subhalos at the low-mass end are populated by a relation of the form M ⋆ ∝ M peak α , with a moderate slope of α const = 2.10 ± 0.01 and a low scatter, constant as a function of the peak halo mass, of σ const = 0.06 − 0.05 + 0.07 . A model with a steeper slope (α grow = 2.39 ± 0.06) and a scatter that grows with decreasing M peak is also consistent with the observed SSMF but is not required. Our new model for the satellite–subhalo connection, based on hundreds of Local Volume satellite galaxies, is in line with what was previously derived using only MW satellites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use the conjugate angle of radial action (θ R ), the best representation of the orbital phase, to explore the "midplane," "north branch," "south branch," and "Monoceros area" disk structures that were previously revealed in the LAMOST K giants. The former three substructures, identified by their 3D kinematical distributions, have been shown to be projections of the phase space spiral (resulting from nonequilibrium phase mixing). In this work, we find that all of these substructures associated with the phase spiral show high aggregation in conjugate angle phase space, indicating that the clumping in conjugate angle space is a feature of ongoing, incomplete phase mixing. We do not find the Z – V Z phase spiral located in the "Monoceros area," but we do find a very highly concentrated substructure in the quadrant of conjugate angle space with the orbital phase from the apocenter to the guiding radius. The existence of the clump in conjugate angle space provides a complementary way to connect the "Monoceros area" with the direct response to a perturbation from a significant gravitationally interactive event. Using test particle simulations, we show that these features are analogous to disturbances caused by the impact of the last passage of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) is the newest high-resolution spectrograph to be developed for a large-aperture telescope, recently deployed and commissioned at the Gemini-South telescope. In this paper, we present the first science results from the GHOST spectrograph taking during its commissioning runs. We have observed the bright metal-poor benchmark star HD 122563, along with two stars in the ultrafaint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II (Ret ii), one of which was previously identified as a candidate member, but did not have a previous detailed chemical abundance analysis. We find that this candidate (GDR3 0928) to be a bona fide member of Ret ii, and from a spectral synthesis analysis it is also revealed to be a CEMP- r star, with significant enhancements in several light elements (C, N, O, Na, Mg, and Si), in addition to featuring an r -process enhancement like many other Ret ii stars. The light-element enhancements in this star resemble the abundance patterns seen in the CEMP-no stars of other ultrafaint dwarf galaxies, and are thought to have been produced by an independent source from the r -process. These unusual abundance patterns are thought to be produced by faint supernovae, which may be produced by some of the earliest generations of stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent observations have reignited interest in a population of dwarf galaxies that are large and diffuse for their mass, often called ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). However, the origin and evolution of these mass–size outliers and the role of the environment are still unclear. Using the exquisitely deep and wide Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Survey images, we search for ultra-puffy galaxies (UPGs), defined as being 1.5 σ larger than the average size for their mass, around Milky Way–like galaxies. We present the sizes and radial distributions of mass–size outliers and derive their quenched fraction to explore the impact of the environment. Surprisingly, despite being outliers in size, the UPGs have a similar quenched fraction as normal-sized satellites of Milky Way analogs in both observations and simulations, suggesting that quenching is not tied to being a mass–size outlier. The quenched fraction is higher for the UPGs associated with redder hosts, as well as those that are closer to the host in projection. In contrast, the UDGs are overall redder and more quiescent compared with normal satellites. We show that the classic definition of UDGs is heavily weighted toward quenched galaxies and thus cannot be used for a study of quenching of mass–size outliers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Galaxy stellar mass is known to be monotonically related to the size of the galaxy's globular cluster (GC) population for Milky Way sized and larger galaxies. However, the relation becomes ambiguous for dwarf galaxies, where there is some evidence for a downturn in GC population size at low galaxy masses. Smaller dwarfs are increasingly likely to have no GCs, and these zeros cannot be easily incorporated into linear models. We introduce the Hierarchical Errors-in-variables ERrors-in-variables BAyesian Lognormal hurdle (HERBAL) model to represent the relationship between dwarf galaxies and their GC populations, and apply it to the sample of Local Group galaxies, where the luminosity range coverage is maximal. This bimodal model accurately represents the two populations of dwarf galaxies: those that have GCs and those that do not. Our model thoroughly accounts for all uncertainties, including measurement uncertainty, uncertainty in luminosity to stellar mass conversions, and intrinsic scatter. The hierarchical nature of our Bayesian model also allows us to estimate galaxy masses and individual mass-to-light ratios from luminosity data within the model. We find that 50% of galaxies are expected to host GC populations at a stellar mass of log 10 (M *) = 6.996 , and that the expected mass of GC populations remains linear down to the smallest galaxies. Our hierarchical model recovers an accurate estimate of the Milky Way stellar mass. Under our assumed error model, we find a nonzero intrinsic scatter of 0.59 − 0.21 + 0.3 (95% credible interval) that should be accounted for in future models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large diffuse galaxies are hard to find, but understanding the environments where they live, their numbers, and ultimately their origins, is of intense interest and importance for galaxy formation and evolution. Using Subaru's Hyper Suprime-Cam Strategic Survey Program, we perform a systematic search for low surface brightness galaxies and present novel and effective methods for detecting and modeling them. As a case study, we surveyed 922 Milky Way analogs in the nearby Universe (0.01 < z < 0.04) and built a large sample of satellite galaxies that are outliers in the mass–size relation. These "ultra-puffy" galaxies (UPGs), defined to be 1.5 σ above the average mass–size relation, represent the tail of the satellite size distribution. We find that each MW analog hosts N UPG = 0.31 ± 0.05 UPGs on average, which is consistent with but slightly lower than the observed abundance at this halo mass in the Local Volume. We also construct a sample of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in MW analogs and find an abundance of N UDG = 0.44 ± 0.05 per host. With literature results, we confirm that the UDG abundance scales with the host halo mass following a sublinear power law. We argue that our definition of UPGs, which is based on the mass–size relation, is more physically motivated than the common definition of UDGs, which depends on the surface brightness and size cuts and thus yields different surface mass density cuts for quenched and star-forming galaxies. We study the satellite plane problem of the Milky Way (MW) by using the recently published simulation data of TNG50-1. Here, we only consider the satellite plane consisting of the brightest 14 MW satellites (11 classical satellites plus Canes Venatici I, Crater II, and Antlia II). One halo (haloID = 395, at z = 0, hereafter halo395) of 231 MW-like candidates possesses a satellite plane as spatially thin and kinematically coherent as the observed one has been found. Halo395 resembles the MW in a number of intriguing ways: it hosts a spiral central galaxy, and its satellite plane is almost (∼87°) perpendicular to the central stellar disk. In addition, halo395 is embedded in a sheet plane, with a void on the top and bottom, similar to the local environment of MW. More interestingly, we found that 11 of the 14 of the satellites on the plane of halo395 arise precisely from the peculiar geometry of its large-scale environment (e.g., sheet and voids). The remaining three members appeared at the right place with the right velocity by chance at z = 0. Our results support previous studies wherein the satellite plane problem is not seen as a serious challenge to the ΛCDM model and its formation is ascribed to the peculiarities of our environment. We present an X-ray analysis of 14 nearby (z < 0.044) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in low-mass galaxies (M * ≲ 5 × 109 M ⊙) selected based on their optical variability. Comparing and contrasting different AGN selection techniques in low-mass galaxies is essential for obtaining an accurate estimate of the active fraction in this regime. We use both new and archival observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory to search for X-ray point sources consistent with AGNs. Four objects have detected nuclear X-ray emission with luminosities ranging from L 0.5−7 ≈ 3 × 1040 to 9 × 1042 erg s−1 with two more marginal detections. All of the detected galaxies have luminosities exceeding those anticipated from X-ray binaries, and all sources are nuclear, suggesting the X-ray emission in most sources is due to an AGN. These observations demonstrate the success of variability at identifying AGNs in low-mass galaxies. We also explore emission-line diagnostics and discuss the differences in the results of these methods for AGN selection, in particular regarding low-mass and low-metallicity systems. We report the discovery of six ultra-faint Milky Way satellites identified through matched-filter searches conducted using Dark Energy Camera (DECam) data processed as part of the second data release of the DECam Local Volume Exploration (DELVE) survey. Leveraging deep Gemini/GMOS-N imaging (for four candidates) as well as follow-up DECam imaging (for two candidates), we characterize the morphologies and stellar populations of these systems. We find that these candidates all share faint absolute magnitudes (M V ≥ −3.2 mag) and old, metal-poor stellar populations (τ > 10 Gyr, [Fe/H] < −1.4 dex). Three of these systems are more extended (r 1/2 > 15 pc), while the other three are compact (r 1/2 < 10 pc). From these properties, we infer that the former three systems (Boötes V, Leo Minor I, and Virgo II) are consistent with ultra-faint dwarf galaxy classifications, whereas the latter three (DELVE 3, DELVE 4, and DELVE 5) are likely ultra-faint star clusters. Using data from the Gaia satellite, we confidently measure the proper motion of Boötes V, Leo Minor I, and DELVE 4, and tentatively detect a proper-motion signal from DELVE 3 and DELVE 5; no signal is detected for Virgo II. We use these measurements to explore possible associations between the newly discovered systems and the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal, the Magellanic Clouds, and the Vast Polar Structure, finding several plausible associations. Our results offer a preview of the numerous ultra-faint stellar systems that will soon be discovered by the Vera C. Simulated galaxy distributions are suitable for developing filament detection algorithms. However, samples of observed galaxies, being of limited size, cause difficulties that lead to a discontinuous distribution of filaments. We created a new galaxy filament catalog composed of a continuous cosmic web with no lone filaments. The core of our approach is a ridge filter used within the framework of image analysis. We considered galaxies from the HyperLeda database with redshifts 0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.1, and in the solid angle 120° ≤ R.A. ≤ 240°, 0° ≤ decl. ≤ 60°. We divided the sample into 16 two-dimensional celestial projections with redshift bin Δ z = 0.005, and compared our continuous filament network with a similar recent catalog covering the same region of the sky. We tested our catalog on two application scenarios. First, we compared the distributions of the distances to the nearest filament of various astrophysical sources (Seyfert galaxies and other active galactic nuclei, radio galaxies, low-surface-brightness galaxies, and dwarf galaxies), and found that all source types trace the filaments well, with no systematic differences. Next, among the HyperLeda galaxies, we investigated the dependence of the g − r color distribution on the distance to the nearest filament, and confirmed that early-type galaxies are located on average further from the filaments than late-type ones. We search for local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs), selecting photometric candidates by broadband color excess and machine-learning techniques with the SDSS photometric data. After removing stellar contaminants by shallow spectroscopy with Seimei and Nayuta telescopes, we confirm that three candidates are EMPGs with 0.05–0.1 Z ⊙ by deep Magellan/MagE spectroscopy for faint [Oiii] λ 4363 lines. Using a statistical sample consisting of 105 spectroscopically confirmed EMPGs taken from our study and the literature, we calculate the cross-correlation function (CCF) of the EMPGs and all SDSS galaxies to quantify environments of EMPGs. Comparing another CCF of all SDSS galaxies and comparison of SDSS galaxies in the same stellar-mass range (107.0–108.4 M ⊙), we find no significant (>1 σ) difference between these two CCFs. We also compare mass–metallicity relations (MZRs) of the EMPGs and those of galaxies at z ∼ 0–4 with a steady chemical evolution model and find that the EMPG MZR is comparable with the model prediction on average. These clustering and chemical properties of EMPGs are explained by a scenario of stochastic metal-poor gas accretion on metal-rich galaxies showing metal-poor star formation. Extending the broadband color excess technique to a high- z EMPG search, we select 17 candidates of z ∼ 4–5 EMPGs with the deep (≃30 mag) near-infrared JWST/NIRCam images obtained by ERO and ERS programs. We find galaxy candidates with negligible [Oiii] λ λ 4959,5007 emission weaker than the local EMPGs and known high- z galaxies, suggesting that some of these candidates may fall in the range of 0–0.01 Z ⊙, which potentially breaks the lowest metallicity limit known to date. We present kinematics of six local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities (0.016–0.098 Z ⊙) and low stellar masses (104.7–107.6 M ⊙). Taking deep medium/high-resolution (R ∼ 7500) integral-field spectra with 8.2 m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H α emission. Carefully masking out substructures originating by inflow and/or outflow, we fit three-dimensional disk models to the observed H α flux, velocity, and velocity dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities (v rot) of 5–23 km s−1 smaller than the velocity dispersions (σ 0) of 17–31 km s−1, indicating dispersion-dominated (v rot/ σ 0 = 0.29–0.80 < 1) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of f gas ≃ 0.9–1.0. Comparing our results with other H α kinematics studies, we find that v rot/ σ 0 decreases and f gas increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star formation rate. We also find that simulated high- z (z ∼ 7) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope observations at z ∼ 7. Dwarf galaxies located in extremely underdense cosmic voids are excellent test beds for disentangling the effects of large-scale environments on galaxy formation and evolution. We present the first results of the Dwarfs in Void Environments Survey, which has obtained integral field spectroscopy for low-mass galaxies (M ⋆ = 107–109 M ⊙) located inside (N = 21) and outside (N = 9) cosmic voids using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. Using measurements of stellar line-of-sight rotational velocity v rot and velocity dispersion σ ⋆, we test the tidal stirring hypothesis, which posits that dwarf spheroidal galaxies are formed through tidal interactions with more massive host galaxies. We measure low values of v rot/ σ ⋆ ≲ 2 for our sample of isolated dwarf galaxies, and we find no trend between v rot/ σ ⋆ and the distance from a massive galaxy d L ⋆ out to d L ⋆ ∼ 10 Mpc. These suggest that dwarf galaxies can become dispersion-supported, "puffy" systems even in the absence of environmental effects like tidal interactions. We also find indications of an upward trend between v rot/ σ ⋆ and galaxy stellar mass, perhaps implying that stellar disk formation depends on mass rather than environment. Although some of our conclusions may be slightly modified by systematic effects, our main result still holds: that isolated low-mass galaxies may form and remain as puffy systems rather than the dynamically cold disks predicted by classical galaxy formation theory. We present a detailed multiwavelength study of star formation in the dwarf galaxy NGC 4395, which hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN). From our observations with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope, we have compiled a catalog of 284 star-forming (SF) regions, out of which we could detect 120 SF regions in H α observations. Across the entire galaxy, we found the extinction-corrected star formation rate (SFR) in the far ultraviolet (UV) to range from 2.0 × 10−5 M ⊙ yr−1 to 1.5 × 10−2 M ⊙ yr−1 with a median of 3.0 × 10−4 M ⊙ yr−1, and the age to lie in the range of ∼1 to 98 Myr with a median of 14 Myr. In H α we found the SFR to range from 7.2 × 10−6 M ⊙ yr−1 to 2.7 × 10−2 M ⊙ yr−1 with a median of 1.7 × 10−4 M ⊙ yr−1, and the age to lie between 3 to 6 Myr with a median of 5 Myr. The stellar ages derived from H α show a gradual decline with galactocentric distance. We found three SF regions close to the center of NGC 4395 with high SFRs both from H α and UV, which could be attributed to feedback effects from the AGN. We also found six other SF regions in one of the spiral arms having higher SFRs. These are very close to supernova remnants, which could have enhanced the SFR locally. We report the observation by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) of a z ≳ 10 galaxy candidate (GHZ1) discovered from the GLASS–JWST Early Release Science Program. Our ALMA program aims to detect the [O iii ] emission line at the rest-frame frequency 3393.0062 GHz (88.36 μ m) and far-IR continuum emission with the spectral window setup seamlessly covering a 26.125 GHz frequency range (10.10 < z < 11.14). A total of 7 hr of on-source integration was employed, using four frequency settings to cover the full range (1.7 hr per setting), with 0.″7 angular resolution. No line or continuum is clearly detected, with 5 σ upper limits on the line emission of 0.93 mJy beam−1 at 25 km s−1 channel−1 and on the continuum emission of 30 μ Jy beam−1. We report marginal spectral (at 225 km s−1 resolution) and continuum features (4.1 σ and 2.6 σ peak signal-to-noise ratio, respectively), within 0.″17 from the JWST position of GHZ1. This spectral feature implies z = 10.38 and needs to be verified with further observations. Assuming that the best estimate of photometric redshift ( z = 10.60 − 0.60 + 0.52 ) is correct, the model of the galaxy's broadband spectral energy distribution for the 3 σ upper limit of the continuum flux from GHZ1 suggests that GHZ1 has a small amount of dust (M d ≲ 104 M ⊙) at a high temperature (T d ≳ 90 K). The 5 σ upper limit on the [O iii ]88 μ m line luminosity and the inferred star formation rate of GHZ1 are consistent with the properties of low-metallicity dwarf galaxies. Feedback likely plays a crucial role in resolving discrepancies between observations and theoretical predictions of dwarf galaxy properties. Stellar feedback was once believed to be sufficient to explain these discrepancies, but it has thus far failed to fully reconcile theory and observations. The recent discovery of energetic galaxy-wide outflows in dwarf galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) suggests that AGN feedback may have a larger role in the evolution of dwarf galaxies than previously suspected. In order to assess the relative importance of stellar versus AGN feedback in these galaxies, we perform a detailed Keck/KCWI optical integral field spectroscopic study of a sample of low-redshift star-forming (SF) dwarf galaxies that show outflows in ionized gas in their Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra. We characterize the outflows and compare them to observations of AGN-driven outflows in dwarfs. We find that SF dwarfs have outflow components that have comparable widths (W 80) to those of outflows in AGN dwarfs, but are much less blueshifted, indicating that SF dwarfs have significantly slower outflows than their AGN counterparts. Outflows in SF dwarfs are spatially resolved and significantly more extended than those in AGN dwarfs. The mass-loss, momentum, and energy rates of star-formation-driven outflows are much lower than those of AGN-driven outflows. Our results indicate that AGN feedback in the form of gas outflows may play an important role in dwarf galaxies and should be considered along with SF feedback in models of dwarf galaxy evolution. We study how supersonic streaming velocities of baryons relative to dark matter—a large-scale effect imprinted at recombination and coherent over ∼3 Mpc scales—affect the formation of dwarf galaxies at z ≳ 5. We perform cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, including and excluding streaming velocities, in regions centered on halos with M vir(z = 0) ≈ 1010 M ⊙; the simulations are part of the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project and run with FIRE-3 physics. Our simulations comprise many thousands of systems with halo masses between M vir = 2 × 105 M ⊙ and 2 × 109 M ⊙ in the redshift range z = 20–5. A few hundred of these galaxies form stars and have stellar masses ranging from 100 to 107 M ⊙. While star formation is globally delayed by approximately 50 Myr in the streaming relative to nonstreaming simulations and the number of luminous galaxies is correspondingly suppressed at high redshift in the streaming runs, these effects decay with time. By z = 5, the properties of the simulated galaxies are nearly identical in the streaming versus nonstreaming runs, indicating that any effects of streaming velocities on the properties of galaxies at the mass scale of classical dwarfs and larger do not persist to z = 0. We present the first detailed comparison of populations of dwarf galaxy stellar streams in cosmological simulations and the Milky Way. In particular, we compare streams identified around 13 Milky Way analogs in the FIRE-2 simulations to streams observed by the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5). For an accurate comparison, we produce mock Dark Energy Survey (DES) observations of the FIRE streams and estimate the detectability of their tidal tails and progenitors. The number and stellar mass distributions of detectable stellar streams is consistent between observations and simulations. However, there are discrepancies in the distributions of pericenters and apocenters, with the detectable FIRE streams, on average, forming at larger pericenters (out to >110 kpc) and surviving only at larger apocenters (≳40 kpc) than those observed in the Milky Way. We find that the population of high-stellar-mass dwarf galaxy streams in the Milky Way is incomplete. Interestingly, a large fraction of the FIRE streams would only be detected as intact satellites in DES-like observations, since their tidal tails have too low surface brightness to be detectable. We thus predict a population of yet-undetected tidal tails around Milky Way satellites, as well as a population of fully undetected low-surface-brightness stellar streams, and estimate their detectability with the Rubin Observatory. Finally, we discuss the causes and implications of the discrepancies between the stream populations in FIRE and the Milky Way, and explore future avenues for tests of satellite disruption in cosmological simulations. Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) are X-ray flares with durations ranging from a few hundred seconds to a few hours. Possible origins include the tidal disruption of a white dwarf by an intermediate-mass black hole, a supernova shock breakout, or a binary neutron star merger. We present the X-ray light curve and spectrum as well as deep optical imaging of the FXT XRT 210423, which has been suggested to be powered by a magnetar produced in a binary neutron star merger. Our Very Large Telescope and Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) observations began on 2021 May 6, thirteen days after the onset of the flare. No transient optical counterpart is found in the 1.″ (3 σ) X-ray uncertainty region of the source to a depth g s = 27.0 AB mag. (We use the word "counterpart" for any transient light in a wave band other than the original X-ray detection wave band, whereas the word "host" refers to the host galaxy.) A candidate host lies within the 1.″ X-ray uncertainty region with a magnitude of 25.9 ± 0.1 in the GTC/HiPERCAM g s filter. Due to its faintness, it was not detected in other bands, precluding a photometric redshift determination. We detect two additional candidate host galaxies: one with z spec = 1.5082 ± 0.0001 and an offset of 4.″2 ± 1.″ (37 ± 9 kpc) from the FXT, and another one with z phot = 1.04 − 0.14 + 0.22 and an offset of 3.″6 ± 1.″ (30 ± 8 kpc). Based on the properties of all the prospective hosts, we favor a binary neutron star merger, as previously suggested in the literature, as the explanation for XRT 210423. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dwarf galaxies are ubiquitous throughout the universe and are extremely sensitive to various forms of internal and external feedback. Over the last two decades, the census of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group and beyond has increased markedly. While hydrodynamic simulations (e.g., FIRE II, Mint Justice League) have reproduced the observed dwarf properties down to the ultrafaints, such simulations require extensive computational resources to run. In this work, we constrain the standard physical implementations in the semianalytic model Galacticus to reproduce the observed properties of the Milky Way satellites down to the ultrafaint dwarfs found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We run Galacticus on merger trees from our high-resolution N –body simulation of a Milky Way analog. We determine the best-fit parameters by matching the cumulative luminosity function and luminosity–metallicity relation from both observations and hydrodynamic simulations. With the correct parameters, the standard physics in Galacticus can reproduce the observed luminosity function and luminosity–metallicity relation of the Milky Way dwarfs. In addition, we find a multidimensional match with half-light radii, velocity dispersions, and mass to light ratios at z = 0 down to M V ≤ −6 (L ≥ 104 L ⊙). In addition to successfully reproducing the properties of the z = 0 Milky Way satellite population, our modeled dwarfs have star formation histories that are consistent with those of the Local Group dwarfs. Stellar streams in the Galactic halo are useful probes of the assembly of galaxies like the Milky Way. Many tidal stellar streams that have been found in recent years are accompanied by a known progenitor globular cluster or dwarf galaxy. However, the Orphan–Chenab (OC) stream is one case where a relatively narrow stream of stars has been found without a known progenitor. In an effort to find the parent of the OC stream, we use astrometry from the early third data release of ESA's Gaia mission (Gaia EDR3) and radial velocity information from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey to find up to 13 stars that are likely members of the OC stream. We use the APOGEE survey to study the chemical nature (for up to 10 stars) of the OC stream in the α (O, Mg, Ca, Si, Ti, and S), odd- Z (Al, K, and V), Fe-peak (Fe, Ni, Mn, Co, and Cr), and neutron-capture (Ce) elemental groups. We find that the stars that make up the OC stream are not consistent with a monometallic population and have a median metallicity of −1.92 dex with a dispersion of 0.28 dex. Our results also indicate that the α elements are depleted compared to the known Milky Way populations and that its [Mg/Al] abundance ratio is not consistent with second-generation stars from globular clusters. The detailed chemical pattern of these stars, namely the [ α /Fe]–[Fe/H] plane and the metallicity distribution, indicates that the OC stream progenitor is very likely to be a dwarf spheroidal galaxy with a mass of ∼106 M ⊙. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has an extensive H α emission halo that traces an extended, warm ionized component of its interstellar medium. Using the Wisconsin H α Mapper telescope, we present the first kinematic H α survey of an extensive region around the LMC, from (ℓ, b) = (264.°5, − 45.°5) to (295.°5, − 19.°5), covering +150 ≤ v LSR ≤ + 390 km s−1. We find that ionized hydrogen exists throughout the galaxy and extends several degrees beyond detected neutral hydrogen emission (log N H I / cm − 2 ≈ 18.3) as traced by 21 cm in current surveys. Using the column density structure of the neutral gas and stellar line-of-sight depths as a guide, we estimate the upper limit mass of the ionized component of the LMC to be roughly M ionized ≈ (0.6–1.8) × 109 M ☉, which is comparable to the total neutral atomic gas mass in the same region (M neutral ≈ 0.76–0.85 × 109 M ☉). Considering only the atomic phases, we find M ionized/ M ionized+neutral, to be 46%–68% throughout the LMC and its extended halo. Additionally, we find an ionized gas cloud that extends off of the LMC at (ℓ, b) ≈ (285°, − 28°) into a region previously identified as the Leading Arm complex. This gas is moving at a similar line-of-sight velocity as the LMC and has M ionized/ M ionized+neutral = 13%–51%. This study, combined with previous studies of the SMC and extended structures of the Magellanic Clouds, continues to suggest that warm, ionized gas is as massive and dynamically important as the neutral gas in the Magellanic System.
