Recently, some fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been reported to exhibit complex and diverse variations in Faraday rotation measurements (RM) and polarization, suggesting that dynamically evolving magnetization environments may surround them. In this paper, we investigate the Faraday conversion (FC) effect in a binary system involving an FRB source and analyze the polarization evolution of FRBs. For a strongly magnetized high-mass companion binary, when an FRB with ∼100% linear polarization passes through the radial magnetic field of the companion star, the circular polarization (CP) component will be induced and oscillate symmetrically around the point with the degree of CP equal to zero, the rate and amplitude of the oscillation decrease as the frequency increases. The very strong plasma column density in the HMCBs can cause CP to oscillate with frequency at a very drastic rate, which may lead to depolarization. Near the superior conjunction of the binary orbit, the DM varies significantly due to the dense plasma near the companion, and the significant FC also occurs in this region. As the pulsar moves away from the superior conjunction, the CP gradually tends toward zero and then returns to its value before incidence. We also investigate the effect of the rotation of the companion star. We find that a sufficiently significant RM reversal can be produced at large magnetic inclinations and the RM variation is very diverse. The environment of a γ -ray burst has an important influence on the evolution of jet dynamics and its afterglow. Here we investigate the afterglow polarizations in a stratified medium with the equal arrival time surface (EATS) effect. Polarizations of multiband afterglows are predicted. The effects of the parameters of the stratified medium on the afterglow polarizations are also investigated. We found the influences of the EATS effect on the afterglow polarizations become important for off-axis detections and polarization degree (PD) bumps move to later times with the EATS effect. Even if the magnetic field configurations, jet structure, and observational angles are fixed, polarization properties of the jet emission could still evolve. Here, we assume a large-scale ordered magnetic field in the reverse-shock region and a two-dimensional random field in the forward-shock region. Then, PD evolution is mainly determined by the evolution of the f 32 parameter (the flux ratio between the reverse-shock region and forward-shock region) at the early stage and by the evolution of the bulk Lorentz factor γ at the late stage. Through the influences on the f 32 or γ, the observational energy band, observational angles, and the parameters of the stratified medium will finally affect the afterglow polarizations. Kilonovae are approximately thermal transients, produced by the mergers of binary neutron stars (BNSs) and neutron star (NS)–black hole binaries. As the optical counterpart of the gravitational-wave event GW170817, AT2017gfo is the first kilonova detected with smoking-gun evidence. Its observation offers vital information for constraining the Hubble constant, the sources of cosmic r -process enrichment, and the equation of state of NSs. The 2.5 m Wide-Field Survey Telescope (WFST) operates in six bands (u, g, r, i, z, w), spanning from 320 to 925 nm. It will be completed in the first half of 2023, and with a field-of-view diameter of 3°, aims to detect kilonovae in the near future. In this article, considering the influence of the host galaxies and sky brightness, we generate simulated images to investigate WFST's ability to detect AT2017gfo-like kilonovae. Due to their spectra, host galaxies can significantly impact kilonova detection at longer wavelengths. When kilonovae are at peak luminosity, we find that WFST performs better in the g and r bands and can detect 90% (50%) of kilonovae at a luminosity distance of 248 Mpc (338 Mpc) with 30 s exposures. Furthermore, to reflect the actual efficiency under target-of-opportunity observations, we calculate the total time of follow up under various localization areas and distances. We find that if the localization areas of most BNS events detected during the fourth observing (O4) run of LIGO and Virgo are hundreds of deg2, WFST is expected to find ∼30% of kilonovae in the first two nights following the detection of a GW event produced by a BNS during the O4 period. In this paper, we model the dynamics and radiation physics of the rarity event GRB 221009A afterglow in detail. By introducing a top-hat jet that propagates in an environment dominated by stellar winds, we explain the publicly available observations of afterglow associated with GRB 221009A over the first week. It is predicted that GRB 221009A emits a luminous very high energy afterglow based on the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process in our model. We show the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis results of GRB 221009A and find that the SSC radiation component of GRB 221009A is very bright in the 0.1–10 TeV band. The integrated SED shows that the SSC emission in the TeV band has detection sensitivity significantly higher than that of LHASSO, MAGIC, and CTA. However, since the release of further observations, deviations from the standard wind environment model have gradually shown up in data. For example, the late-time multiband afterglow cannot be consistently explained under the standard wind environment scenario. It may be necessary to consider modeling with a structured jet with complex geometry or a partial revision of the standard model. Furthermore, we find that the inclusion of GeV observations could break the degeneracy between model parameters, highlighting the significance of high-energy observations in determining accurate parameters for GRB afterglows. iPTF14hls is a luminous Type II supernova (SN) with a bumpy light curve whose origin remains under debate. It maintains a roughly constant effective temperature and luminosity for about 600 days after discovery, followed by a slow decay. About ∼1000 days after discovery, the light curve transitions to a very steep decline. A spectrum taken during this steep-decline phase shows clear signatures of a shock interaction with a dense circumstellar medium (CSM). Here, we explore the possibility of iPTF14hls as an interaction-powered SN. The light curve of iPTF14hls can be fitted with wind-like CSMs. Analytic modeling indicates that iPTF14hls may have undertaken six episodes of mass loss during the last ∼200 yr. Assuming that the 1954 eruption triggered the last mass-loss episode, the stellar wind velocity is determined to be 40âˆ'70 km sâˆ'1, depending on different models. Mass-loss rates are in the range 0.4â€"3.3 M ⊙ yrâˆ'1. The inferred total mass of the ejecta and CSMs (M ej + M CSMs ≃ 245 M ⊙) supports the idea that iPTF14hls may be a candidate for a (pulsational) pair-instability SN. It is still a highly debated question as to whether fast radio bursts (FRBs) are classified into one or two populations. To probe this question, we perform a statistical analysis using the first Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst (CHIME/FRB) catalog and identify a few discriminant properties between repeating and non-repeating FRBs such as the repetition rate, duration, bandwidth, spectral index, peak luminosity, and potential peak frequency. If repeating and non-repeating FRBs belong to one population, their distribution distinctions for the repetition rate and duration can be explained by the selection effect due to the beamed emission as in Connor et al. However, we obtain that the distribution distinctions for the spectral index and potentially the peak frequency cannot be explained by the beamed emission within the framework of either the coherent curvature radiation or synchrotron maser emission. In this work, we propose an accreting stellar binary model for understanding the active periodic fast radio bursts (FRBs). The system consists of a stellar compact object (CO) and a donor star (DS) companion in an eccentric orbit, where the DS fills its own Roche lobe near the periastron. The CO accretes the material from the DS and then drives relativistic magnetic blobs. The interaction between the magnetic blobs and the stellar wind of the DS produces a pair of shocks. We find that both the reverse shock and the forward shock are likely to produce FRBs via the synchrotron maser mechanism. We show that this system can in principle sufficiently produce highly active FRBs with a long lifetime, and also can naturally explain the periodicity and the duty cycle of the activity that appeared in FRBs 180916 and 121102. The radio nebula excited by the long-term injection of magnetic blobs into the surrounding environment may account for the associated persistent radio source. In addiction, we discuss the possible multiwavelength counterparts of FRB 180916 in the context of this model. Finally, we encourage the search for FRBs in ultraluminous X-ray sources. A relativistic electron–positron (e+e−) pair wind from a rapidly rotating, strongly magnetized neutron star (NS) would interact with a gamma-ray burst (GRB) external shock and reshape afterglow emission signatures. Assuming that the merger remnant of GW170817 is a long-lived NS, we show that a relativistic e+e− pair wind model with a simple top-hat jet viewed off-axis can reproduce multiwavelength afterglow lightcurves and superluminal motion of GRB 170817A. The Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method is adopted to obtain the best-fitting parameters, which give the jet half-opening angle θj ≈ 0.12 rad, and the viewing angle θv ≈ 0.23 rad. The best-fitting value of θv is close to the lower limit of the prior that is chosen based on the gravitational-wave and electromagnetic observations. In addition, we also derive the initial Lorentz factor Γ0 ≈ 49 and the isotropic kinetic energy EK,iso ≈ 1× 1052 erg. Consistency between the corrected on-axis values for GRB 170817A and typical values observed for short GRBs indicates that our model can also reproduce the prompt emission of GRB 170817A. An NS with a magnetic field strength Bp ≈ 1.6 × 1013 G is obtained in our fitting, indicating that a relatively low thermalization efficiency η ≲ 10−3 is needed to satisfy observational constraints on the kilonova. Furthermore, our model is able to reproduce a late-time shallow decay in the X-ray lightcurve, and predicts that the X-ray and radio flux will continue to decline in the coming years. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious radio transients with millisecond durations. Recently, ∼16 days of periodic activity and ∼159 days of possible periodicity were detected to arise from FRB 180916.J0158+65 and FRB 121102, respectively, and the spin period of a slow-rotation magnetar was further considered to be one of the possible explanations of the periodic activities of repeating FRBs. For isolated neutron stars, the spin evolution suggests that it has difficulty reaching several hours. In this work, we mainly focus on the possible maximum spin period of isolated NSs/magnetars dominated by an interaction between a star's magnetic field and the disk. We find that the disk wind plays an important role in spin evolution, whose influence varies the power-law index in the evolution equation of mass flow rate. For a magnetar without disk wind, the longest spin period is tens of hours. When the disk wind with a classical parameter is involved, the maximum spin period can reach hundreds of hours. But for an extremely large index of mass flow rate due to disk wind or other angular momentum extraction processes, a spin period of ∼(16–160) days is still possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are a new kind of extragalactic radio transients. Some of them show repeating behaviors. Recent observations indicate that a few repeating FRBs (e.g., FRB 121102) present time–frequency downward drifting patterns and nearly 100% linear polarization. Following the model of Dai et al. who proposed that repeating FRBs may originate from a slowly rotating, old-aged pulsar colliding with an asteroid belt around a stellar-mass object, we focus on the prediction of time–frequency drifting and polarization. In this scenario, the frequency drifting is mainly caused by the geometric structure of a pulsar magnetosphere, and the drifting rate–frequency index is found to be 25/17. On the other hand, by considering the typical differential mass distribution of incident asteroids, we find that an asteroid with mass m ≳ 1017 g colliding with the pulsar would contribute abundant gravitational energy, which powers an FRB. A broad frequency band of the FRBs would be expected, due to the mass difference of the incident asteroids. In addition, we simulate the linear polarization distribution for the repeating FRBs, and constrain the linear polarization with ≳30% for the FRBs with flux of an order of magnitude lower than the maximum flux. In this paper, we investigate the energy-source models for the most luminous supernova ASASSN-15lh. We revisit the ejecta–circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction (CSI) model and the CSI plus magnetar spin-down with full gamma-ray/X-ray trapping, which were adopted by Chatzopoulos et al., and find that the two models cannot fit the bolometric light curve (LC) of ASASSN-15lh. Therefore, we consider a CSI plus magnetar model with the gamma-ray/X-ray leakage effect to eliminate the late-time excess of the theoretical LC. We find that this revised model can reproduce the bolometric LC of ASASSN-15lh. Moreover, we construct a new hybrid model (i.e., the CSI plus fallback model), and find that it can also reproduce the bolometric LC of ASASSN-15lh. Assuming that the conversion efficiency (η) of fallback accretion to an outflow is typically ∼10−3, we derive that the total mass accreted is ∼3.9 M⊙. The inferred CSM mass in the two models is rather large, indicating that the progenitor could have experienced an eruption of hydrogen-poor materials followed by an energetic core-collapse explosion leaving behind a magnetar or a black hole. The LIGO/Virgo and Fermi collaborations recently reported a possible joint detection of a subthreshold gravitational-wave (GW) event and a subthreshold gamma-ray burst (GRB), GBM-190816, that occurred 1.57 s after the merger. We perform an independent analysis of the publicly available data and investigate the physical implications of this potential association. By carefully studying the following properties of GBM-190816 using Fermi/GBM data, including signal-to-noise ratio, duration, f-parameter, spectral properties, energetic properties, and its compliance with some GRB statistical correlations, we confirm that this event is likely a typical short GRB. Assuming its association with the subthreshold GW event, the inferred luminosity is erg s−1. Based on the available information of the subthreshold GW event, we infer the mass ratio q of the compact binary as (90% confidence interval) according to the reported range of luminosity distance. If the heavier compact object has a mass >3 solar masses, q can be further constrained to. The leading physical scenario invokes an NS–BH merger system with the NS tidally disrupted. Within this scenario, we constrain the physical properties of such a system (including mass ratio q, the spin parameters, and the observer's viewing angle) to produce a GRB. The GW data may also allow an NS–BH system with no tidal disruption of the NS (the plunge events) or a BH–BH merger. We apply the charged compact binary coalescence theory (for both a constant charge and an increasing charge for the merging members) to derive the model parameters to account for GBM-190816 and found that the required parameters are extreme. Finally, we argue that the fact that the observed GW–GRB delay timescale is comparable to that of GW170817/GRB 170817A suggests that the GW–GRB time delay of these two cases is mainly defined by the timescale for the jet to propagate to the energy dissipation/GRB emission site. The first repeating fast radio burst (FRB), FRB 121102, was found to be associated with a spatially coincident, persistent nonthermal radio source, but the origin of the persistent emission remains unknown. In this paper, we propose that the persistent emission is produced via a synchrotron-heating process by multiple bursts of FRB 121102 in a self-absorbed synchrotron nebula. With a population of bursts of the repeating FRB absorbed by the synchrotron nebula, the energy distribution of electrons in the nebula will change significantly. As a result, the spectrum of the nebula will show a hump steadily. For the persistent emission of FRB 121102, the total energy of bursts injecting into the nebula is required to be about 3.3 × 1049 erg, the burst injection age is over 6.7 × 104 yr, the nebula size is ∼0.02 pc, and the electron number is about 3.2 × 1055. We predict that as more bursts inject, the brightness of the nebula would be brighter than the current observation, and meanwhile, the peak frequency would become higher. Due to the synchrotron absorption of the nebula, some low-frequency bursts would be absorbed, which may explain why most bursts were detected above ∼1 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reverse shock (RS) model is generally introduced to interpret the optical afterglows with the rapid rising and decaying, such as the early optical afterglow of GRB 990123 (which is also called the optical flash). In this paper, we collected 11 gamma-ray burst (GRB) early optical afterglows, which have signatures of dominant RS emission. Since the temporal slopes of the optical flashes are determined by both the medium density distribution index k and the electron spectral index p, we apply the RS model of the thin shell case to the optical flashes and determine the ambient medium of the progenitors. We find that the k value is in the range of 0–1.5. The k value in this paper is consistent with the result in Yi et al., where the forward shock model was applied to some onset bumps. However, the method adopted in this paper is only applicable to GRB afterglows with significant sharp rising and decaying RS emission. Our results indicate that the RS model can also be applied to confirm the circumburst medium, further implying that GRBs may have diverse circumburst media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SN 2007D is a nearby (redshift z = 0.023146), luminous Type Ic supernova (SN) having a narrow light curve (LC) and high peak luminosity. Previous research based on the assumption that it was powered by the 56Ni cascade decay suggested that the inferred 56Ni mass and the ejecta mass are ∼1.5 M⊙ and ∼3.5 M⊙, respectively. In this paper, we employ some multiband LC models to model the R-band LC and the color (V − R) evolution of SN 2007D to investigate the possible energy sources powering them. We find that the pure 56Ni model is disfavored; the multiband LCs of SN 2007D can be reproduced by a magnetar whose initial rotational period P0 and magnetic field strength Bp are (or) ms and (or) G, respectively. By comparing the spectrum of SN 2007D with that of some superluminous SNe (SLSNe), we find that it might be a luminous SN like several luminous "gap-filler" optical transients that bridge ordinary and SLSNe, rather than a genuine SLSN. A long-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) has been widely thought to arise from the collapse of a massive star, and it has been suggested that its ambient medium is a homogenous interstellar medium (ISM) or a stellar wind. There are two shocks when an ultra-relativistic fireball that has been ejected during the prompt gamma-ray emission phase sweeps up the circumburst medium: a reverse shock that propagates into the fireball, and a forward shock that propagates into the ambient medium. In this paper, we investigate the temporal evolution of the dynamics and emission of these two shocks in an environment with a general density distribution of n∝R–k (where R is the radius) by considering thick-shell and thin-shell cases. A GRB afterglow with one smooth onset peak at early times is understood to result from such external shocks. Thus, we can determine the medium density distribution by fitting the onset peak appearing in the light curve of an early optical afterglow. We apply our model to 19 GRBs and find that their k values are in the range of 0.4-1.4, with a typical value of k ∼ 1, implying that this environment is neither a homogenous ISM with k = 0 nor a typical stellar wind with k = 2. We continue our systematic statistical study of various components of gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical light curves. We decompose the early onset bump and the late re-brightening bump with empirical fits and analyze their statistical properties. Among the 146 GRBs that have well-sampled optical light curves, the onset and re-brightening bumps are observed in 38 and 26 GRBs, respectively. It is found that the typical rising and decaying slopes for both the onset and re-brightening bumps are ~1.5 and ~-1.15, respectively. No early onset bumps in the X-ray band are detected to be associated with the optical onset bumps, while an X-ray re-brightening bump is detected for half of the re-brightening optical bumps. The peak luminosity is anti-correlated with the peak time Lp α t -1.81±0.32 p for the onset bumps and Lp ℵ t -0.83±0.17 p for the re-brightening bumps. Both Lp and the isotropic energy release of the onset bumps are correlated with Eγ,iso, whereas no similar correlation is found for the re-brightening bumps. These results suggest that the afterglow onset bumps are likely due to the deceleration of the GRB fireballs. Taking the onset bumps as probes for the properties of the fireballs and their ambient medium, we find that the typical power-law index of the relativistic electrons is 2.5 and the medium density profile behaves as n ℵ r -1 within the framework of the synchrotron external shock models. With the medium density profile obtained from our analysis, we also confirm the correlation between the initial Lorentz factor (Γ0) and Eiso,γ in our previous work. The jet component that produces the re-brightening bump seems to be on-axis and independent of the prompt emission jet component. There is accumulating evidence that at least a fraction of binary neutron star (BNS) mergers result in rapidly spinning magnetars, with subrelativistic neutron-rich ejecta as massive as a small fraction of a solar mass. The ejecta could be heated continuously by the Poynting flux emanated from the central magnetars. Such a Poynting flux could become lepton dominated so that a reverse shock develops. It was demonstrated that such a picture is capable of accounting for the optical transient PTF11agg. In this paper we investigate the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, as well as the optical and radio radiation studied by Wang & Dai. UV emission is particularly important because it has the right energy to ionize the hot ejecta at times t ≲ 600 s. It is thought that the ejecta of BNS mergers are a remarkably pure sample of r-process material, about which our understanding is still incomplete. In this paper we evaluate the possibility of observationally determining the bound-bound and bound-free opacities of the r-process material by timing the X-ray, UV, and optical radiation. It is found that these timings depend on the opacities weakly, and therefore only loose constraints on the opacities can be obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soft extended emission (EE) following initial hard spikes up to 100 s was observed with Swift/BAT for about half of known short-type gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). This challenges the conversional central engine models of SGRBs, i.e., compact star merger models. In the framework of black-hole-neutron-star merger models, we study the roles of radial angular momentum transfer in the disk and the magnetic barrier around the black hole in the activity of SGRB central engines. We show that radial angular momentum transfer may significantly prolong the lifetime of the accretion process, which may be divided into multiple episodes by the magnetic barrier. Our numerical calculations based on models of neutrino-dominated accretion flows suggest that disk mass is critical for producing the observed EE. In the case of the mass being ∼0.8 M☼, our model can reproduce the observed timescale and luminosity of both the main and the EE episodes in a reasonable parameter set. The predicted luminosity of the EE component is lower than the observed EE within about one order of magnitude and the timescale is shorter than 20 s if the disk mass is ∼0.2 M☼. Swift/BAT-like instruments may be not sensitive enough to detect the EE component in this case. The increasingly deep limit on the neutrino emission from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with IceCube observations has reached a level that could place useful constraints on the fireball properties. We first present a revised analytic calculation of the neutrino flux that predicts a flux of one order of magnitude lower than that obtained by the IceCube Collaboration. For the benchmark model parameters (e.g., the bulk Lorentz factor is Γ = 102.5, the observed variability time for the long GRBs is tobv = 0.01 s, and the ratio between the energy in the accelerated protons and in the radiation is ηp = 10 for every burst) in the standard internal shock scenario, the predicted neutrino flux from 215 bursts during the period of the 40- and 59-string configurations is a factor of ∼3 below the IceCube sensitivity. However, if we accept the recently found inherent relation between the bulk Lorentz factor and the burst energy, then the expected neutrino flux significantly increases and the spectral peak shifts to a lower energy. In this case, the nondetection implies that the baryon-loading ratio should be ηp ≲ 10 if the variability time of the long GRBs is fixed to tobv = 0.01 s. Instead, if we relax the standard internal-shock scenario but still assume ηp = 10, then the nondetection constrains the dissipation radius, R ≳ 4 × 1012 cm, assuming the same dissipation radius for every burst and benchmark parameters for the fireballs. We also calculate the diffuse neutrino flux from the GRBs for different luminosity functions from the literature. The expected flux exceeds the current IceCube limit for some of the luminosity functions, and, thus, the nondetection constrains ηp ≲ 10 when the variability time of the long GRBs is fixed at tobv = 0.01 s.
