The solar magnetic fields emerging from the photosphere into the chromosphere and corona are comprised of a combination of closed (field lines with both ends rooted at the Sun) and open (field lines with only one end at the Sun) fields. Since the early 2000s, the magnitude of total unsigned open magnetic flux estimated by coronal models has been in significant disagreement with in situ spacecraft observations, especially during solar maximum. Estimates of total open unsigned magnetic flux using coronal hole observations (e.g., using extreme ultraviolet or helium (He) I) are in general, in average agreement with the coronal model results and thus show similar disagreements with in situ observations. This paper provides a brief overview of the problem, summarizes the proposed explanations for the discrepancies, and presents results that strongly support the explanation that the discrepancy is due to dynamics at the open-closed boundary. These results are derived from the determination of the total unsigned open magnetic flux, utilizing the Wang–Sheeley–Arge model at a particular spatial resolution and different field-line tracing methods. One of these methods produces excellent agreement with in situ observations. Our results imply that strong magnetic fields in close proximity to active regions and residing near the boundaries of mid-latitude coronal holes are the primary source of the missing open flux. Hybrid simulations are carried out to study the instabilities driven by the outer heliosheath pickup ions of ring-beam velocity distributions. Following the linear instability analysis in the companion paper, the electromagnetic instabilities at various propagation directions (0° ≤ θ ≤ 180°) are studied for pickup ion ring-beam distributions of different pickup angles (0° ≤ α ≤ 90°). Previous studies of the ring-beam pickup ion distributions have been limited to the parallel- and antiparallel-propagating modes (θ = 0° and 180°). In this paper, several one-dimensional hybrid simulations are performed to investigate the most unstable modes of different propagation angles predicted by the linear instability analysis. Moreover, two-dimensional hybrid simulations are conducted to examine the simultaneous excitation of the parallel, antiparallel, and oblique unstable modes and their role in the scattering of the outer heliosheath pickup ions. Our recent one-dimensional hybrid and particle-in-cell simulations with simulation domains along the background magnetic field demonstrated that at small pickup angles, the outer heliosheath pickup ions experience an incomplete scattering limited to the hemisphere of positive parallel velocities with respect to the background magnetic field. In contrast, the present two-dimensional hybrid simulation results show that when both parallel/antiparallel and oblique unstable modes are acting together, the pickup ions can be scattered into the hemisphere of negative parallel velocities and approach a near-isotropic velocity distribution. This is in conflict with the spatial retention scenario of the energetic neutral atom ribbon observed by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer, which requires pickup ions at small pickup angles to stream away from the ribbon directions. Parker Solar Probe, the closest spacecraft to the Sun, has renewed our understanding of the solar corona and the interplanetary space. One of its important findings is the prevalence of switchbacks, which display localized magnetic reversals along the otherwise Parker spirals. While some switchbacks might disappear quickly, others can maintain for a long period of time, and there are indications that many switchbacks strengthen from the solar corona to the interplanetary space despite their magnetic tension force, which tends to straighten the magnetic field lines. Therefore, how these switchbacks could be maintained for a long period of time remains a mystery. In this paper, we employed a 3D data-driven global full magnetohydrodynamics numerical model to explore the evolution of switchbacks formed in the dynamic corona. Our simulations indicate that two factors can affect the lifetime of a switchback. One factor is the combination of angle and leg length ensures that the switchback with greater curvature after reconnection can last longer, and the greater the angle, the more magnetic field lines that can be reconnected, and thus the longer the duration. We call this influencing factor flux tube shape factor. The other factor is the velocity shear, i.e., when the solar wind at the convex-outward turning of a switchback is faster than that at the concave-outward turning, the switchback becomes enhanced during propagation, and it weakens when the velocity difference is opposite. Recently an improved nonlinear theory for the transport of energetic particles across a mean magnetic field has been developed. The latter theory is called the field lineâ€"particle decorrelation theory and is the first analytical theory that agrees with test-particle simulations without the need of a correction parameter, nor does the theory contain any other free parameter. In the current paper we derive analytical forms for the ratio of perpendicular and parallel spatial diffusion coefficients Îş ⊥/ Îş ∥ of low-energy particles. In the considered limit the latter ratio is constant meaning that it does not depend on particle energy or rigidity. It is shown that the ratio always has the form Îş ⊥ / Îş ∥ = a 2 δ B x 2 / B 0 2 if a two-dimensional turbulence model is employed. Furthermore, the parameter a 2 depends only on the shape of the turbulence spectrum but not on the magnetic fields. In a previous paper, we found that perpendicular and parallel proton temperatures are clearly associated with the proton-scale turbulence in the solar wind, and magnetic helicity signature appears to be an important indicator in the association. Based on 15 yr of in situ measurements, the present paper further investigates the magnetic helicity of solar wind turbulence and its role in regulating magnetic energy spectra and proton temperatures. Results show that the presence of the helicity signature is very common in solar wind turbulence at scales , with k being the wavenumber and ρp the proton gyroradius. The sign of the helicity is mostly positive, indicating the dominance of right-handed polarization of the turbulence. The helicity magnitude usually increases with k and (the proton parallel beta) when and are less than unity. As helicity magnitude increases, the power index of the energy spectrum becomes more negative, and the proton temperatures and rise significantly, where and are the perpendicular and parallel temperatures with respect to the background magnetic field. In particular, the rise of is faster than when is satisfied. The faster rise of with the helicity magnitude may be interpreted as the result of the preferentially perpendicular heating of solar wind protons by kinetic Alfvén wave turbulence. This paper presents models to estimate the structure of density and magnetic field strength in spheroidal condensations from maps of their column density and their polarization of magnetically aligned dust grains. The density model is obtained by fitting a column density map with an embedded p = 2 Plummer spheroid of any aspect ratio and inclination. The magnetic properties are based on the density model, the Davis–Chandrasekhar–Fermi (DCF) model of Alfvénic fluctuations, and the spheroid flux freezing (SFF) model of mass and flux conservation in Paper I. The field strength model has the resolution of the column density map, which is finer than the resolution of the DCF estimate of field strength. The models are applied to ALMA observations of the envelope of the protostar BHR 71 IRS1. Column density fits give the density model from (2.0 ± 0.4) × 105 to (7 ± 1) × 107 cm−3. The density model predicts the field directions map, which fits the polarization map best within 1100 au, with standard deviation of angle differences of 17°. In this region, the DCF mean field strength is 0.7 ± 0.2 mG, and the envelope mass is supercritical, with a ratio of mass to magnetic critical mass of 1.5 ± 0.4. The SFF field strength profile scales with the DCF field strength from 60 ± 10 μG to 3 ± 1 mG. The spatial resolution of the SFF field strength estimate is finer than the DCF resolution by a factor of ∼7, and the peak SFF field strength exceeds the DCF field strength by a factor of ∼4. Much of our understanding of the state of coronal plasmas comes from observations that are optically thin. This means that light travels freely through the corona without being materially affected by it, which allows it to be easily seen through, but also results in a line-of-sight degeneracy that has previously thwarted attempts to recover the three-dimensional structure of the coronal plasma. However, although the corona is disorganized in the line-of-sight direction, it is highly organized in the field-aligned direction. This paper demonstrates how to exploit this organization to resolve the line-of-sight degeneracy in the plasma properties using a suitable magnetic field structure. This allows, for the first time, the two-dimensional optically thin plasma observations to directly drive the three-dimensional plasma reconstruction throughout an entire active region (or larger). A preliminary investigation with a potential field is shown, finding a solution which clearly resembles the real solar data, even with a single perspective. The results indicate that there is ample information in the resulting residuals that can be used to refine the magnetic field structure, suggesting that these residuals can in turn be used to directly constrain the magnetic field extrapolations used in the reconstruction. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are one of the most promising transient events for studying multiwavelength observations in extreme conditions. Observation of GeV photons from bursts would provide crucial information on GRB physics, including the off-axis emission. The Second Gamma-ray Burst Catalog (2FLGC) has been announced by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) Collaboration. This catalog includes 29 bursts with photon energy higher than 10 GeV. While the synchrotron forward-shock model has well explained the afterglow data of GRBs, photon energies greater than 10 GeV are very difficult to interpret within this framework. To study the spectral and temporal indices of those bursts described in 2FLGC, Fraija et al. () proposed the closure relations (CRs) of the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission of GRBs emitted from an on-axis jet, which decelerates in stellar-wind and constant-density medium. In this paper, we extend the CRs of the SSC afterglow from an on-axis scenario to an off-axis scenario, including the synchrotron afterglow radiation that seems to be off-axis. In order to investigate the spectral and temporal index evolution of those bursts reported in 2FLGC, we consider hydrodynamical evolution with energy injection in the adiabatic and radiative regimes for an electron distribution with a spectral index of 1 < p < 2 and 2 < p. The results show that the most likely scenario for synchrotron emission corresponds to the stellar wind whether or not there is energy injection and that the most likely scenario for SSC emission corresponds to the constant density when there is no energy injection and to the stellar wind when there is energy injection. Identifying the accelerators of Galactic cosmic ray (CR) protons with energies up to a few PeV (1015 eV) remains a theoretical and observational challenge. Supernova remnants (SNRs) represent strong candidates because they provide sufficient energetics to reproduce the CR flux observed at Earth. However, it remains unclear whether they can accelerate particles to PeV energies, particularly after the very early stages of their evolution. This uncertainty has prompted searches for other source classes and necessitates comprehensive theoretical modeling of the maximum proton energy, E max , accelerated by an arbitrary shock. While analytic estimates of E max have been put forward in the literature, they do not fully account for the complex interplay between particle acceleration, magnetic field amplification, and shock evolution. This paper uses a multizone, semianalytic model of particle acceleration based on kinetic simulations to place constraints on E max for a wide range of astrophysical shocks. In particular, we develop relationships between E max , shock velocity, size, and ambient medium. We find that SNRs can only accelerate PeV particles under a select set of circumstances, namely, if the shock velocity exceeds ∼104 km s−1 and escaping particles drive magnetic field amplification. However, older and slower SNRs may still produce observational signatures of PeV particles due to populations accelerated when the shock was younger. Owing to its unevenly distributed crustal fields, Mars acts as a unique obstacle to the solar wind. In the presence of the crustal fields, the transport of the planetary ions on the dayside ionosphere exhibits north–south asymmetry. Additionally, the heavy-ion loss in the magnetotail is affected by the crustal fields. In this paper, a three-dimensional multispecies magnetohydrodynamic model is employed to simulate Mars–solar wind interactions. Numerical results indicate that the meridional transport is dominant in most areas on the dayside ionosphere. In the presence of the crustal fields, the meridional transport on the southern hemisphere (southward transport) is reduced by more than 70% above the strong crustal sources, and the zonal velocity shows local changes inside strong and weak crustal field regions. These effects result in an increase or decrease in the number density of the heavy ions reaching the terminator, thereby influencing the thickness of the ionosphere. Decreased southward velocity leads to a reduction in the heavy-ion loss on the southern magnetotail. The radial outward flux is reduced by more than 30% for O2+ and CO2+ and by 10% for O+. This study shows that in addition to the zonal transport, the meridional transport is important for the day-to-night transport on the dayside of Mars. Collectively, the horizontal plasma transport, controlled by crustal fields, is associated with the altered ionosphere structure and reduced heavy-ion loss in the magnetotail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The neutrino-driven wind cooling phase of proto-neutron stars (PNSs) follows successful supernovae. Wind models without magnetic fields or rotation fail to achieve the necessary conditions for production of the third r -process peak, but robustly produce a weak r- process in neutron-rich winds. Using 2D magnetohydrodynamic simulations with magnetar-strength magnetic fields and rotation, we show that the PNS rotation rate significantly affects the thermodynamic conditions of the wind. We show that high-entropy material is quasiperiodically ejected from the closed zone of the PNS magnetosphere with the required thermodynamic conditions to produce heavy elements. We show that maximum entropy S of the material ejected depends systematically on the magnetar spin period P ⋆ and scales as S ∝ P ⋆ − 5 / 6 for sufficiently rapid rotation. We present results from simulations at a constant neutrino luminosity representative of ∼1–2 s after the onset of cooling for P ⋆ ranging from 5–200 ms and a few simulations with evolving neutrino luminosity where we follow the evolution of the magnetar wind until 10–14 s after the onset of cooling. We estimate at magnetar polar magnetic field strength B 0 = 3 × 1015 G and 1015 G that neutron-rich magnetar winds can, respectively, produce at least ∼1–5 × 10−5 M ⊙ and ∼1–4 × 10−7 M ⊙ of material with the required parameters for synthesis of the third r -process peak, within 1–2 s and 10 s, respectively, in that order after the onset of cooling. We show that proton-rich magnetar winds can have favorable conditions for production of p- nuclei, even at a modest B 0 = 5 × 1014 G. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We derive the nonthermal velocities (NTVs) in the transition region of an active region using the Si iv 1393.78 Å line observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph and compare them with the line-of-sight photospheric magnetic fields obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The active region consists of two strong field regions with opposite polarity, separated by a weak field corridor that widened as the active region evolved. The means of the NTV distributions in strong field regions (weak field corridors) range between ∼18–20 (16–18) km s−1, albeit the NTV maps show a much larger range. In addition, we identify a narrow lane in the middle of the corridor with significantly reduced NTV. The NTVs do not show a strong center-to-limb variation, albeit they show somewhat larger values near the disk center. The NTVs are well correlated with redshifts as well as line intensities. The results obtained here and those presented in our companion paper on Doppler shifts suggest two populations of plasma in the active region emitting in Si iv. The first population exists in the strong field regions and extends partway into the weak field corridor between them. We attribute this plasma to spicules heated to ∼0.1 MK (often called type II spicules). They have a range of inclinations relative to vertical. The second population exists in the center of the corridor, is relatively faint, and has smaller velocities, likely horizontal. The solution of polarized radiative transfer equation with angle-dependent (AD) partial frequency redistribution (PRD) is a challenging problem. Modeling the observed, linearly polarized strong resonance lines in the solar spectrum often requires the solution of the AD line transfer problems in one-dimensional or multi-dimensional (multi-D) geometries. The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of the relative importance of the AD PRD effects and the multi-D transfer effects and particularly their combined influence on the line polarization. This would help in a quantitative analysis of the second solar spectrum (the linearly polarized spectrum of the Sun). We consider both non-magnetic and magnetic media. In this paper we reduce the Stokes vector transfer equation to a simpler form using a Fourier decomposition technique for multi-D media. A fast numerical method is also devised to solve the concerned multi-D transfer problem. The numerical results are presented for a two-dimensional medium with a moderate optical thickness (effectively thin) and are computed for a collisionless frequency redistribution. We show that the AD PRD effects are significant and cannot be ignored in a quantitative fine analysis of the line polarization. These effects are accentuated by the finite dimensionality of the medium (multi-D transfer). Voyager 1 has been moving through the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) from the time that it crossed the heliopause on 2012/DOY 238 to 2020/DOY 292. Three notable objects in the magnetic field of the VLISM have been observed: two shocks and one pressure front. This paper reports the observation of a fourth object observed near 2020/DOY 147. There were no upstream electron plasma oscillations of the type often observed ahead of shocks, abrupt increases in energetic particles, or fluctuations in the 48 s increments of the magnetic field associated with this feature, suggesting that it was probably not a shock. This feature was associated with a relatively large increase in the magnetic field strength (B2/B1 = 1.35) and in the electron density determined by the Plasma Wave Science experiment (N2/N1 = 1.36) using a new method described in this paper. This feature appears to be a pressure front associated with a compressive wave in the VLISM. The two shocks and the two pressure fronts were associated with the four largest maxima observed in B(t) between 2012/DOY 238 and 2020/DOY 292. Each feature was associated with a jump–ramp structure. The expanding-box model of the solar wind has been adopted in the literature within the context of magnetohydrodynamics, hybrid, and full particle-in-cell simulations to investigate the dynamic evolution of the solar wind. The present paper extends such a method to the framework of self-consistent quasilinear kinetic theory. It is shown that the expanding-box quasilinear methodology is largely equivalent to the inhomogeneous steady-state quasilinear model discussed earlier in the literature, but a distinction regarding the description of wave dynamics between the two approaches is also found. The expanding-box quasilinear formalism is further extended to include the effects of a spiraling solar-wind magnetic field as well as collisional age effects. The present finding shows that the expanding-box quasilinear approach and the steady-state global-kinetic models may be employed interchangeably in order to address other more complex problems associated with the solar-wind dynamics. The typical spectrum of the prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) indicates that the electron cooling is suppressed in spite of the strong magnetic field in the standard synchrotron model. Recent particle-in-cell simulations show that the particle acceleration by magnetic reconnection in a magnetically dominated plasma can lead to small pitch angles especially in a low-energy region. Such a small pitch angle prevents electrons from cooling via synchrotron radiation. In this paper, taking into account the effects of the synchrotron cooling and the adiabatic cooling, we numerically calculate the synchrotron spectra with anisotropic electron distributions. If we require a Poynting flux larger than 1050 erg sâˆ'1 as the model is motivated by magnetic reconnection, the bulk Lorentz factor of ∼1000 and the electron minimum Lorentz factor of Îł min ∼ 104 are required to reproduce the typical GRB spectrum. Strong gravity and magnetic fields are key ingredients that power processes of accretion and ejection near compact objects. While the particular mechanisms that operate here are still discussed, it seems that the presence of an ordered magnetic field is crucial for the acceleration and collimation of relativistic jets of electrically charged particles on superhorizon length scales. In this context, we further study the effect of a large-scale magnetic field on the dynamics of charged particles near a rotating black hole. We consider a scenario in which the initially neutral particles on regular geodesic orbits in the equatorial plane are destabilized by a charging process (e.g., photoionization). Some charged particles are accelerated out of the equatorial plane, and they follow jetlike trajectories with relativistic velocities. In our previous paper, we investigated this scenario for the case of perfect alignment of the magnetic field with the axis of rotation; i.e., the system was considered axisymmetric. Here we relax this assumption and investigate nonaxisymmetric systems in which the magnetic field is arbitrarily inclined with respect to the black hole spin. We study the system numerically in order to locate the zones of escaping trajectories and compute the maximum (terminal) escape velocity. It appears that breaking the axial symmetry (even by small inclination angles) substantially increases the fraction of escaping orbits and allows the acceleration to ultrarelativistic velocities that were excluded in the axisymmetric setup. Recently a heuristic description of collisionless perpendicular diffusion of energetic particles was presented. The latter approach describes the transport of energetic particles across a mean magnetic field based on simple physical arguments. Although this approach was developed with the intention to improve our understanding of perpendicular diffusion, this heuristic approach also provided some interesting quantitative results such as an explanation of the factor a2 used in the past to balance out inaccuracies of systematic analytical theories. However, the aforementioned heuristic approach is based on the assumption that magnetic field lines become diffusive after overcoming the initial free-streaming regime. In the current paper we alter the heuristic approach to make it applicable for turbulence spectra leading to super-diffusive magnetic fields lines. It is argued that particle diffusion is still restored in the late time limit. In the high-energy limit this recovery of diffusion is based on a hybrid model in which particles move half ballistically and half diffusively in the parallel direction. Furthermore, this leads to the relation between perpendicular and parallel mean free paths of the energetic particles. This type of transport was obtained in the past from test-particle simulations as well as systematic analytical theories. The solar coronal heating in quiet Sun (QS) and coronal holes (CHs), including solar wind formation, are intimately tied by magnetic field dynamics. Thus, a detailed comparative study of these regions is needed to understand the underlying physical processes. CHs are known to have subdued intensity and larger blueshifts in the corona. This work investigates the similarities and differences between CHs and QS in the chromosphere using the Mg ii h and k, C ii line, and transition region using Si iv line, for regions with identical absolute magnetic flux density (∣B∣). We find CHs to have subdued intensity in all of the lines, with the difference increasing with line formation height and ∣B∣. The chromospheric lines show excess upflows and downflows in CH, while Si iv shows excess upflows (downflows) in CHs (QS), where the flows increase with ∣B∣. We further demonstrate that the upflows (downflows) in Si iv are correlated with both upflows and downflows (only downflows) in the chromospheric lines. CHs (QS) show larger Si IV upflows (downflows) for similar flows in the chromosphere, suggesting a common origin to these flows. These observations may be explained due to impulsive heating via interchange (closed-loop) reconnection in CHs (QS), resulting in bidirectional flows at different heights, due to differences in magnetic field topologies. Finally, the kinked field lines from interchange reconnection may be carried away as magnetic field rotations and observed as switchbacks. Thus, our results suggest a unified picture of solar wind emergence, coronal heating, and near-Sun switchback formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we reanalyze the X1.7 class limb flare that occurred on 2013 May 13 (SOL2013-05-13T01:56 UT), concentrating on the energy-releasing process using microwave observations mainly made by Nobeyama and X-ray observations made by RHESSI. The analysis was carried out in the context of EUV observations made by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on board Solar Dynamics Observatory. First, we complement the initiation process by showing that the initiation occurred together with material falling from a large-scale overlying prominence, a signature of drainage instability. The usual downward and upward motions of the microwave and X-ray sources are observed from their evolution. However, the microwave source's height shows a recurrent decrease and increase during its overall upward motion; it shows a kind of recurrent contraction and expansion. The time period of the recurrent contraction and expansion corresponds to the period of post-contraction oscillation of EUV loops, and the oscillatory motions are closely correlated with four microwave/hard X-ray peaks that unusually increased nonthermal emission levels by several times. X-ray spectra get hardened during the oscillation. In addition, the rapid contraction of magnetic loops located on the outside of the erupting flux rope occurs 5 minutes after the onset of the flare, showing that the contraction of the peripheral magnetic loops is more likely due to the vortex and sink flows generated by an upward erupting magnetic flux rope rather than a coronal implosion. The release and acceleration of the solar wind is still an outstanding question. There are several aspects related to this phenomenon that still need to be investigated, and one of these is the identification of the region within the inner corona where the larger fraction of acceleration occurs. To address this matter, it is necessary to have reliable measurements of the solar wind speed between 1 and 10 solar radii (R ⊙). Moreover, in order to describe the coronal plasma behavior, it is important to consider its interaction with the magnetic field. Within this context, our intent is to investigate a method to combine measurements of the solar wind with the extrapolated magnetic field in the corona to derive how the solar wind velocity evolves along the magnetic field lines, aiming at better understanding the sources, origins, and acceleration of the solar wind. To this purpose, we used outflow speed measurements of the coronal plasma derived by applying the Doppler dimming technique, as well as the global magnetic field configuration derived from the measured photospheric magnetic field by using the Wang–Sheeley–Arge model. These two sets of data are then combined for heliocentric distances between 2.6 and 5 R ⊙. This paper presents the proposed method and the results obtained over two different Carrington rotations (CR 1923 and CR 1924), demonstrating the applicability of the method and the capability to link measured solar wind velocity to the extrapolated coronal magnetic field in order to derive the velocity profile. To explain the linear polarization observed in spatially resolved structures in the solar atmosphere, the solution of polarized radiative transfer (RT) equation in multi-dimensional (multi-D) geometries is essential. For strong resonance lines, partial frequency redistribution (PRD) effects also become important. In a series of papers, we have been investigating the nature of Stokes profiles formed in multi-D media including PRD in line scattering. For numerical simplicity, so far we have restricted our attention to the particular case of PRD functions which are averaged over all the incident and scattered directions. In this paper, we formulate the polarized RT equation in multi-D media that takes into account the Hanle effect with angle-dependent PRD functions. We generalize here to the multi-D case the method for Fourier series expansion of angle-dependent PRD functions originally developed for RT in one-dimensional geometry. In this paper, we use two injection methods, i.e., coronal mass ejection (CME) with and without radial compression, to investigate the propagation of the 2007 November 15 CME in the inner heliosphere with a three-dimensional, time-dependent, numerical magnetohydrodynamic model. In order to reproduce the large-scale interplanetary magnetic field associated with the CME, the spheromak model is used to provide the intrinsic magnetic field structure of the CME. The modeled results also suggest that the CME without radial compression propagates in interplanetary space with a lower velocity and arrives at 1 au later. We interpret these differences as a result of different Lorentz forces acting on the two injection methods, which lead to different CME expansions in the heliosphere. Additionally, the model of a CME without radial compression tends to overestimate the radial extension at 1 au due to an overestimation of the CME radial size in the simulation and the modeled magnetic fields at 1 au are lower compared to the model of a CME with radial compression. In this paper, we study the evolution of the X5.4 flare (SOL2012-03-07T00:02) in NOAA Active Region 11429, focusing on its initiation mechanisms and back-reaction effects. To help our study, three-dimensional (3D) coronal magnetic field models are extrapolated from the photospheric magnetograms of the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory under the assumptions of nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) and non-force-free field (non-FFF). We investigate the 3D magnetic structure and MHD kink instability, torus instability, and double-arc instability (DAI), and find that this flare is most likely triggered by the tether-cutting reconnection and the subsequent DAI. For the back-reactions of the flare, both NLFFF and non-FFF models clearly show an increase in horizontal magnetic field (B h ) and a decrease in inclination angle (ϕ) of the magnetic field near the polarity inversion line, from the photosphere up to a certain height (5 Mm and 8 Mm for non-FFF and NLFFF, respectively). In addition, the non-FFF model shows an enhancement of the downward Lorentz force acting on the photosphere, and the location of the enhancement spatially coincides with the location of the flare onset. In this paper, we present a new tool to investigate the interaction of the solar wind with Venus with the approach of a global multifluid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model. The continuity, momentum, and energy equations for H+, O+, O 2 + , and CO 2 + are solved self-consistently together with Faraday's law. The photochemistry of ionospheric ions are considered as the source term in the density, momentum, and energy equations for each ion. We found that the simulated ionospheric density, temperature, and the bow shock location are consistent with previous observations and simulations for both the solar maximum and minimum. The simulated magnetic fields also agree well with the Venus Express observations. Meanwhile, the high-resolving power and low numerical diffusion makes the model capable of capturing the fine structures of the Venusian-induced magnetosphere, such as the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and the nightside wake. The escape rates have also been estimated and the results are similar to previous estimations. The high-resolution model could be an efficient tool for the exploration of the fine structures of the Venusian space environment system, and also for the application to other unmagnetized planets. The transport of waves and turbulence beyond the photosphere is central to the coronal heating problem. Turbulence in the quiet solar corona has been modeled on the basis of the nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (NI MHD) theory to describe the transport of low-frequency turbulence in open magnetic field regions. It describes the evolution of the coupled majority quasi-2D and minority slab component, driven by the magnetic carpet and advected by a subsonic, sub-Alfvénic flow from the lower corona. In this paper, we couple the NI MHD turbulence transport model with an MHD model of the solar corona to study the heating problem in a coronal loop. In a realistic benchmark coronal loop problem, we find that a loop can be heated to ∼1.5 million K by transport and dissipation of MHD turbulence described by the NI MHD model. We also find that the majority 2D component is as important as the minority slab component in the heating of the coronal loop. We compare our coupled MHD/NI MHD model results with a reduced MHD (RMHD) model. An important distinction between these models is that RMHD solves for small-scale velocity and magnetic field fluctuations and obtains the actual viscous/resistive dissipation associated with their evolution whereas NI MHD evolves scalar moments of the fluctuating velocity and magnetic fields and approximates dissipation using an MHD turbulence phenomenology. Despite the basic differences between the models, their simulation results match remarkably well, yielding almost identical heating rates inside the corona. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Asymmetric magnetic reconnection usually occurs at the Earth's magnetopause, where the magnetic field strength and plasma density are different between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere. In this paper, a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation model is used to study the energy conversion during asymmetric magnetic reconnection. Energy conversion can occur in the vicinity of the X-line, magnetosphere separatrix region, and reconnection fronts. In the vicinity of the X-line and magnetosphere separatrix region, the electromagnetic field energy is mainly transferred to electrons, while at the reconnection fronts, the electromagnetic field energy is mainly transferred to ions. For the case with weak magnetic field asymmetry, the reconnection fronts dominate the energy conversion, which is related to the inflowing Poynting flux S z at the fronts. For the case with strong magnetic field asymmetry, the energy conversion occurs around the X-line and magnetosphere separatrix region, but no longer at the reconnection fronts. This is because the inflowing Poynting flux S x near the magnetosphere separatrices provides electromagnetic energy for energy conversion. We explore perpendicular diffusion based on the unified nonlinear transport theory. In Paper I, we focused on magnetostatic turbulence, whereas in the present article we include dynamical turbulence effects. For simplicity, we assume a constant correlation time. We show that there is now a nonvanishing contribution of the slab modes. We explore the parameter regimes in which the turbulence dynamics becomes important for perpendicular diffusion. The magnetic dipole moment μ of an accretion-powered pulsar in magnetocentrifugal equilibrium cannot be inferred uniquely from time-averaged pulse period and aperiodic X-ray flux data, because the radiative efficiency η 0 of the accretion is unknown, as are the mass, radius, and distance of the star. The degeneracy associated with the radiative efficiency is circumvented if fluctuations of the pulse period and aperiodic X-ray flux are tracked with a Kalman filter, whereupon μ can be measured uniquely up to the uncertainties in the mass, radius, and distance. Here, the Kalman filter analysis is demonstrated successfully in practice for the first time on Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the X-ray transient SXP 18.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), which is monitored regularly. The analysis yields μ = 8.0 − 1.2 + 1.3 × 10 30 G cm 3 and η 0 = 0.04 − 0.01 + 0.02 , compared to μ = 5.0 − 1.0 + 1.0 × 10 30 G cm 3 as inferred traditionally from time-averaged data assuming η 0 = 1. The analysis also yields time-resolved estimates of two hidden state variables, the mass accretion rate and the Maxwell stress at the disk–magnetosphere boundary. The success of the demonstration confirms that the Kalman filter analysis can be applied in the future to study the magnetic moments and disk–magnetosphere physics of accretion-powered pulsar populations in the SMC and elsewhere. Solar magnetic fields alter scattering polarization in spectral lines like Sr i at 4607 Å via the Hanle effect, making it a potential diagnostic for small-scale, mixed-polarity photospheric magnetic fields. Recently, observational evidence for scattering polarization in the Sr i 4607 Å line at the solar disk center was found. Here, we investigate the reliability of the reconstruction method that made possible this detection. To this end, we apply it to linear polarization profiles of the Sr i 4607 Å line radiation emerging at the disk center obtained from a detailed 3D radiative transfer calculation in a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulation snapshot with a small-scale dynamo contribution. The reconstruction method systematically reduces the scattering amplitudes by up to a factor of 2, depending on the noise level. We demonstrate that the decrease can be attributed to two systematic errors: first, the physical constraint that underlies our assumptions regarding the dependence of scattering polarization on the quadrupolar moment of the radiation field; and second, the limitations of our method in accurately determining the sign of the radiation field tensor from the observed intensity image. However, by consistently applying the reconstruction process and after taking into account image-degradation effects due to the temporally variable image quality, such as imposed by seeing, the observed and synthesized polarization signals show remarkable agreement. We thus conclude that the observed scattering polarization at the solar disk center is consistent with that emerging from a MHD model of the solar photosphere with an average magnetic field of 170 G at the visible surface. The Mg ii h and k lines are among the strongest in the near-ultraviolet solar spectrum and their line core originates in the upper chromosphere, just below the transition region. Consequently, they have become one of the main targets for investigating the magnetism of the upper solar atmosphere. The recent Chromospheric Layer Spectropolarimeter (CLASP2) mission obtained unprecedented spectropolarimetric data on these lines in an active region plage, which have already been used to infer the longitudinal component of the magnetic field by applying the weak-field approximation. In this paper, we aim at improving our understanding of the diagnostic capabilities of these lines by studying the emergent Stokes profiles resulting from radiative transfer calculations in a radiative magnetohydrodynamic time-dependent model representative of a solar plage. To this end, we create a synthetic observation with temporal and spatial resolutions similar to those of CLASP2. We find strong asymmetries in the synthetic profiles of circular polarization, which considerably complicate the application of the weak-field approximation. We demonstrate that the selective application of the weak-field approximation to fit different spectral regions in the profile allows us to retrieve information about the longitudinal component of the magnetic field in different regions of the model atmosphere, even when the circular polarization profiles are not antisymmetric and are formed in the presence of strong velocity and magnetic field gradients. Understanding the magnetic structure of filament channels is difficult but essential for identifying the mechanism (s) responsible for solar eruptions. In this paper we characterize the magnetic field in a well-observed filament channel with two independent methods, prominence seismology and magnetohydrodynamics flux-rope modeling, and compare the results. In 2014 May and June, active region 12076 exhibited a complex of filaments undergoing repeated oscillations over the course of 12 days. We measure the oscillation periods in the region with both Global Oscillation Network Group H α and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) Advanced Imaging Assembly EUV images, and then utilize the pendulum model of large-amplitude longitudinal oscillations to calculate the radius of curvature of the fields supporting the oscillating plasma from the derived periods. We also employ the regularized Biotâ€"Savart laws formalism to construct a flux-rope model of the field of the central filament in the region based on an SDO Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager magnetogram. We compare the estimated radius of curvature, location, and angle of the magnetic field in the plane of the sky derived from the observed oscillations with the corresponding magnetic-field properties extracted from the flux-rope model. We find that the two models are broadly consistent, but detailed comparisons of the model and specific oscillations often differ. Filamentary structures are recognized as a fundamental component of interstellar molecular clouds in observations made by the Herschel satellite. These filaments, especially massive filaments, often extend in a direction perpendicular to the interstellar magnetic field. Furthermore, the filaments sometimes have an apparently negative temperature gradient—that is, their temperatures decrease toward their centers. In this paper, we study the magnetohydrostatic equilibrium state of negative-indexed polytropic gas with the magnetic field running perpendicular to the axis of the filament. The model is controlled by four parameters: center-to-surface density ratio (ρc/ρs), plasma β of the surrounding gas, radius of the parent cloud normalized by the scale height, and the polytropic index N. The steepness of the temperature gradient is represented by N. We found that the envelope of the column density profile becomes shallow when the temperature gradient is large. This reconciles the inconsistency between the observed profiles and those expected from the isothermal models. We compared the maximum line mass (mass per unit length), above which there is no equilibrium, with that of the isothermal nonmagnetized filament. We obtained an empirical formula to express the maximum line mass of a magnetized polytropic filament as M⊙ pc−1, where represents the maximum line mass of the nonmagnetized filament and Φcl indicates one-half of the magnetic flux threading the filament per unit length. Although the negative-indexed polytrope makes the maximum line mass decrease, compared with that of the isothermal model, a magnetic field threading the filament increases the line mass. Parker first proposed (1972) that coronal heating was the necessary outcome of an energy flux caused by the tangling of coronal magnetic field lines by photospheric flows. In this paper we discuss how this model has been modified by subsequent numerical simulations outlining in particular the substantial differences between the "nanoflares" introduced by Parker and "elementary events," defined here as small-scale spatially and temporally isolated heating events resulting from the continuous formation and dissipation of field-aligned current sheets within a coronal loop. We present numerical simulations of the compressible 3D MHD equations using the HYPERION code. We use two clustering algorithms to investigate the properties of the simulated elementary events: an IDL implementation of a density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise technique, and our own physical distance clustering algorithm. We identify and track elementary heating events in time, both in temperature and in Joule heating space. For every event we characterize properties such as density, temperature, volume, aspect ratio, length, thickness, duration, and energy. The energies of the events are in the range of 1018–1021 erg, with durations shorter than 100 s. A few events last up to 200 s and release energies up to 1023 erg. While high temperatures are typically located at the flux tube apex, the currents extend all the way to the footpoints. Hence, a single elementary event cannot at present be detected. We have studied formation of planetesimals at a radial pressure bump in a protoplanetary disk created by radially inhomogeneous magnetorotational instability (MRI), through three-dimensional resistiveMHDsimulations including dust particles. In our previous papers, we showed that the inhomogeneous MRI developing in non-uniform structure of magnetic field or magnetic resistivity can transform the local gas flow in the disk to a quasi-steady state with local rigid rotation that is no longer unstable against the MRI. Since the outer part of the rigid rotation is super-Keplerian flow, a quasi-static pressure bump is created and dust concentration is expected there. In this paper, we perform simulations of the same systems, adding dust particles that suffer gas drag and modulate gas flow via the back-reaction of the gas drag (dust drag). We use ~O(107) super-particles, each of which represents ~O(106)-O(107) dust particles with sizes of centimeter to meter. We have found that the dust drag suppresses turbulent motion to decrease the velocity dispersion of the dust particles while it broadens the dust concentrated regions to limit peaky dust concentration, compared with the simulation without the dust drag. We found that the positive effect for the gravitational instability (GI), reduction in the velocity dispersion, dominates over the negative one, suppression in particle concentration. For meter-size particles with the friction time τf ⋍ 1/Ω, where Ω is Keplerian frequency, the GI of the dust particles that may lead to planetesimal formation is expected. For such a situation, we further introduced the self-gravity of dust particles to the simulation to demonstrate that several gravitationally bound clumps are actually formed. Through analytical arguments, we found that planetesimal formation from meter-sized dust particles is possible at ~5 AU, if dust spatial density is a few times larger than that in the minimum mass solar nebula. We present an investigation of the magnetic activity and flare characteristics of the subgiant stars mostly from F and G spectral types and compare the results with the main-sequence (MS) stars. The light curve of 352 stars on the subgiant branch (SGB) from the Kepler mission is analyzed in order to infer stability, relative coverage, and contrast of the magnetic structures and also flare properties using three flare indexes. The results show the following. (i) Relative coverage and contrast of the magnetic features along with rate, power, and magnitude of flares increase on the SGB due to the deepening of the convective zone and more vigorous magnetic field production. (ii) Magnetic activity of the F- and G-type stars on the SGB does not show dependency on the rotation rate and does not obey the saturation regime. This is the opposite of what we saw for the MS, in which the G-, K-, and M-type stars show clear dependency on the Rossby number. (iii) The positive relationship between the magnetic features' stability and their relative coverage and contrast remains true on the SGB; though, it has a lower dependency coefficient in comparison with the MS. In this paper, we report the EUV late phase for the M1.8 class flare on 2012 July 5 in the active region (AR) 11515. The late phase is shown by the prominent appearance of EUV emission at 131 Å of two additional flare loop systems (flare arcades 2 and 3, as named in this paper) other than the main flare loop (flare arcade 1), as observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO). Three sets of flare arcades connect four flare ribbons, which forms an asymmetric quadrupole magnetic field configuration. While the emission from flare arcade 2, linking the pair of secondary flare ribbons, and arcade 3, linking one of the main flare ribbons and one of the secondary flare ribbons, conjointly contributes to the EUV late phase, their heating mechanisms are quite different. While the brightening of flare arcade 2 is the result of disturbance created by the eruption of EUV hot channels to the overlying coronal magnetic field, the heating of flare arcade 3 was closely associated with two rapid contractions of the overlying filament threads during the partial eruption of the filament. The contractions are discernible in He i 10830 Å images and have signatures in the EUV wavelengths of AIA. The two rapid contractions are the result of a sudden drop in magnetic pressure after the eruption of two hot channels. Clear evidence suggests that magnetic reconnection may occur between the contracting filament threads and the low-lying magnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Faraday tomography is a novel method to probe the three-dimensional structure of magnetic fields of polarized radio sources. In this paper, we investigate the intrinsic Faraday dispersion function (FDF) of disk galaxies extending a simple analytic model of galactic magnetic fields developed in Ideguchi et al. The model consists of axisymmetric coherent fields and turbulent fields, and we consider the effects of inclination, the relative amplitude of coherent and turbulent magnetic fields, and the pitch angle of coherent fields. Our simple model makes it easy to obtain a physical interpretation of FDFs and helps us understand observational results. We find that FDFs generally have two peaks when galaxies are observed with nonzero inclination and the gap between the two peaks, their relative heights, and their widths are dependent on the model parameters. In particular, the gap is strongly dependent on the inclination angle and typically varies by a factor of two when we consider the inclination of 10°–60°, while the relative height varies by less than 20%. These findings provide us with the important lesson that the presence of two peaks in intrinsic FDFs does not necessarily imply the presence of two separate radio sources within a beam and they allow us to estimate the galactic parameters. This work is a continuation of Paper I and is devoted to the analysis of nonthermal electron dynamics and plasma heating in the confined M1.2 class solar flare SOL2015-03-15T22:43, revealing energy release in the highly sheared interacting magnetic loops in the low corona, above the polarity inversion line (PIL). The aim of the present work is to perform the first extensive quantitative analysis of the photospheric magnetic field and photospheric vertical electric current (PVEC) dynamics in the confined flare region near the PIL using new vector magnetograms obtained with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory with a high temporal resolution of 135 s. Data analysis reveals sharp changes of the magnetic structure and PVEC associated with flare onset near the PIL. It is found that the strongest plasma heating and electron acceleration are associated with the largest increase in the magnetic reconnection rate, total PVEC, and effective PVEC density in the flare ribbons. Observations and nonlinear force-free field extrapolations show that the magnetic field structure around the PIL is consistent with a tether-cutting magnetic reconnection (TCMR) geometry. We give a qualitative interpretation of the observed dynamics of the flare ribbons, magnetic field, PVEC, and electron acceleration within the TCMR scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rise of flux tubes with intense magnetic fields from the base of the convection zone to the solar surface has been substantiated as a probable mechanism for sunspot formation. The origin of flux tubes of a sufficient strength (∼105 G) is, however, uncertain. This paper considers the instability of a large-scale toroidal magnetic field caused by the magnetic suppression of convective heat transport as a candidate for the flux-tube formation mechanism. The consideration employs the analytical dependence of eddy diffusion on the magnetic field supplied by mean-field magnetohydrodynamics. The instability tends to produce regions of increased field strength with spatial scales of the order of 100 Mm at the base of the convection zone. Characteristic growth times of the instability are short compared to the 11 yr cycle. The threshold field strength for the onset of the instability increases from several hundred Gauss in the vicinity of the equator to some kilo-Gauss at middle latitudes. Growth rates of unstable disturbances decrease with latitude. These latitudinal trends can be the reason for the observed confinement of sunspot activity to a near-equatorial belt. This paper studies how to employ synchrotron emission gradient techniques to reveal the properties of the magnetic field within the interstellar media. Based on data cubes of three-dimensional numerical simulations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, we explore spatial gradients of synchrotron emission diagnostics to trace the direction of the magnetic field. According to our simulations, multifarious diagnostics for synchrotron emission can effectively determine the potential direction of projected magnetic fields. Applying the synergies of synchrotron diagnostic gradients to the archive data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, we find that multifarious diagnostic techniques make consistent predictions for the Galactic magnetic field directions. With the high-resolution data presently available from Low Frequency Array for radio astronomy and those in the future from the Square Kilometer Array, the synergies of synchrotron emission gradients are supposed to perform better in tracing the actual direction of interstellar magnetic fields, especially in the low-frequency Faraday rotation regime where the traditional synchrotron polarization measure fails. The evolution of white dwarfs (WDs) depends crucially on thermal processes. The plasma in their core can produce neutrinos that escape from the star, thus contributing to the energy loss. While in the absence of a magnetic field the main cooling mechanism is plasmon decay at high temperature and photon surface emission at low temperature, a large magnetic field in the core hiding beneath the surface even of ordinary WDs, and undetectable to spectropolarimetric measurements, could potentially leave an imprint in the cooling. In this paper, we revisit the contribution to WD cooling stemming from neutrino pair synchrotron radiation and the effects of the magnetic field on plasmon decay. Our key finding is that even if observations limit the magnetic field strength at the stellar surface, magnetic fields in the interior of WDsâ€"with or without a surface magnetic fieldâ€"can be strong enough to modify the cooling rate, with neutrino pair synchrotron emission being the most important contribution. This effect may not only be relevant for the quantification and interpretation of cooling anomalies, but suggests that the internal magnetic fields of WDs should be smaller than ∼ 6 Ă— 1011 G, slightly improving bounds coming from a stability requirement. In this paper, through analyzing data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG), we present a study on the formation of a double-decker filament in NOAA Active Region 12665 from 2017 July 8 to 14. We find that magnetic reconnection occurs between two smaller filaments to form a longer filament. According to the evolution of the leading sunspot, it is obvious that the sunspot experiences a continuous rotation around its umbra. During the period from 03:00 UT on July 11 to 10:00 UT on July 14, the average speed of sunspot rotation is about 3.°7 hrâ€"1. The continuous rotation of sunspot stretches the filament and results in the formation of a reversed S-shaped filament. Due to the motion of the magnetic field and internal magnetic reconnection, the filament splits into two branches and forms a double-decker filament structure. In the process of filament separation, internal magnetic reconnection can also accelerate the filament separation. Nonlinear force-free field extrapolation indicates that there are two magnetic flux ropes, which are consistent with the observed results. Recent precise measurements of primary and secondary cosmic-ray (CR) species in the teravolt rigidity domain have unveiled a bump in their spectra, located between 0.5 and 50 TV. We argue that a local shock may generate such a bump by increasing the rigidity of the preexisting CRs below 50 TV by a mere factor of ∼1.5. Reaccelerated particles below ∼0.5 TV are convected with the interstellar medium flow and do not reach the Sun, thus creating the bump. This single universal process is responsible for the observed spectra of all CR species in the rigidity range below 100 TV. We propose that one viable shock candidate is the Epsilon Eridani star at 3.2 pc from the Sun, which is well aligned with the direction of the local magnetic field. Other shocks, such as old supernova shells, may produce a similar effect. We provide a simple formula, Equation (9), that reproduces the spectra of all CR species with only two nonadjustable shock parameters, uniquely derived from the proton data. Recently, a collision-induced magnetic reconnection (CMR) mechanism was proposed to explain a dense filament formation in the Orion A giant molecular cloud. A natural question is whether CMR works elsewhere in the Galaxy. As an initial attempt to answer the question, this paper investigates the triggering of CMR and the production of dense gas in a flat-rotating disk with a modified Bisymmetric spiral (BSS) magnetic field. Cloudâˆ'cloud collisions at field reversals in the disk are modeled with the Athena++ code. Under the condition that is representative of the warm neutral medium, the cloudâˆ'cloud collision successfully triggers CMR at different disk radii. However, dense gas formation is hindered by the dominating thermal pressure, unless a moderately stronger initial field ≳5 ÎĽ G is present. The strong-field model, having a larger Lundquist number S L and lower plasma β, activates the plasmoid instability in the collision midplane, which is otherwise suppressed by the disk rotation. We speculate that CMR can be common if more clouds collide along field reversals. However, to witness the CMR process in numerical simulations, we need to significantly resolve the collision midplane with a spatial dynamic range ≳106. If Milky Way spiral arms indeed coincide with field reversals in BSS, it is possible that CMR creates or maintains dense gas in the arms. Jet precessions are widely involved in astrophysical phenomena from galaxies to X-ray binaries and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Polarization presents a unique probe of the magnetic fields in GRB jets. The precession of GRB relativistic jets will change the geometry within the observable emitting region of the jet, which can potentially affect the polarization of the afterglow. In this paper, we take into account jet precession to study the polarization evolution and corresponding light curves in GRB early optical afterglows with ordered and random magnetic field geometries. We find that the jet precession in long-lived engines can significantly reduce the polarization degree (PD) regardless of the magnetic field structure. The strongest PD attenuation is found when the line of sight is aligned with the precession axis. The view on velocity structures in molecular clouds and their relationship with magnetic fields (B field) has evolved during the past decade from almost no correlation to highly parallel. Our numerical simulations suggest a more nuanced picture: Depending on whether the self-gravity is dynamically dominant, the velocity field can be governed by either contraction (at high densities) or turbulence (at low densities), and their anisotropies will tend to be either perpendicular or parallel, respectively, to the B fields. High-density regions are always embedded in the low-density fore/background, so the velocity behaviors from lines of sight (LOSs) with high column densities will be a mixture of orthogonal anisotropies, which can be hard to interpret and necessitates zooming in onto certain LOS scales to better characterize localized behaviors. In this paper, we simulate the prompt emission light curve, spectrum, and E p evolution patterns of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) within the framework of the Internal-collision-induced Magnetic Reconnection and Turbulence (ICMART) model. We show that this model can produce a Band-shaped spectrum, whose parameters (E p, α, β) could follow the typical distribution of GRB observations, as long as the magnetic field and the electron acceleration process in the emission region are under appropriate conditions. On the other hand, we show that for one ICMART event, E p evolution is always a hard-to-soft pattern. However, a GRB light curve is usually composed of multiple ICMART events that are fundamentally driven by the erratic activity of the GRB central engine. In this case, we find that if one individual broad pulse in the GRB light curve is composed of multiple ICMART events, the overall E p evolution could be disguised as an intensity-tracking pattern. Therefore, mixed E p evolution patterns can coexist in the same burst, with a variety of combined patterns. Our results support the ICMART model as a competitive model to explain the main properties of GRB prompt emission. The possible challenges faced by the ICMART model are also discussed in detail. Magnetic flux ropes with helical field lines and a strong core field are ubiquitous structures in space plasmas. Recently, kinetic-scale flux ropes have been identified by high-resolution observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft in the magnetosheath, which have drawn a lot of attention because of their nonideal behavior and internal structures. Detailed investigation of flux rope structure and dynamics requires the development of realistic kinetic models. In this paper, we generalize an equilibrium model to reconstruct a kinetic-scale flux rope previously reported via MMS observations. The key features in the magnetic field and electron pitch-angle distribution measurements of all four satellites are simultaneously reproduced in this reconstruction. Besides validating the model, our results also indicate that the anisotropic features previously attributed to asymmetric magnetic topologies in the magnetosheath can be alternatively explained by the spacecraft motion in the flux rope rest frame. In this paper, we present multiwavelength observations of the triggering of a failed-eruptive M-class flare from active region NOAA 11302 and investigate the possible reasons for the associated failed eruption. Photospheric observations and nonlinear force-free field extrapolated coronal magnetic field revealed that the flaring region had a complex quadrupolar configuration with a preexisting coronal nullpoint situated above the core field. Prior to the onset of the M-class flare, we observed multiple periods of small-scale flux enhancements in GOES and RHESSI soft X-ray observations from the location of the nullpoint. The preflare configuration and evolution reported here are similar to the configurations presented in the breakout model, but at much lower coronal heights. The core of the flaring region was characterized by the presence of two flux ropes in a double-decker configuration. During the impulsive phase of the flare, one of the two flux ropes initially started erupting, but resulted in a failed eruption. Calculation of the magnetic decay index revealed a saddle-like profile where the decay index initially increased to the torus-unstable limits within the heights of the flux ropes, but then decreased rapidly and reached negative values, which was most likely responsible for the failed eruption of the initially torus-unstable flux rope.
