Detailed observations of star-forming galaxies at high redshift are critical to understanding the formation and evolution of the earliest galaxies. Gravitational lensing provides an important boost, allowing observations at physical scales unreachable in unlensed galaxies. We present three lensed galaxies from the RELICS survey at z phot = 6–10, including the most highly magnified galaxy at z phot ∼ 6 (WHL 0137–zD1, dubbed the Sunrise Arc), the brightest known lensed galaxy at z phot ∼ 6 (MACS 0308–zD1), and the only spatially resolved galaxy currently known at z phot ∼ 10 (SPT 0615–JD). The Sunrise Arc contains seven star-forming clumps with delensed radii as small as 3 pc, the smallest spatial scales yet observed in a z > 6 galaxy, while SPT 0615–JD contains features measuring a few tens of parsecs. MACS 0308–zD1 contains an r ∼ 30 pc clump with a star formation rate (SFR) of ∼3 M ⊙ yr−1, giving it an SFR surface density of ΣSFR ∼ 103 M ⊙ yr−1 kpc−2. These galaxies provide a unique window into small-scale star formation during the epoch of reionization. We present LOw Frequency ARray observations of the Coma Cluster field at 144 MHz. The cluster hosts one of the most famous radio halos, a relic, and a low surface brightness bridge. We detect new features that allow us to make a step forward in the understanding of particle acceleration in clusters. The radio halo extends for more than 2 Mpc, which is the largest extent ever reported. To the northeast of the cluster, beyond the Coma virial radius, we discover an arc-like radio source that could trace particles accelerated by an accretion shock. To the west of the halo, coincident with a shock detected in the X-rays, we confirm the presence of a radio front, with different spectral properties with respect to the rest of the halo. We detect a radial steepening of the radio halo spectral index between 144 and 342 MHz, at ∼30′ from the cluster center, that may indicate a non-constant re-acceleration time throughout the volume. We also detect a mild steepening of the spectral index toward the cluster center. For the first time, a radial change in the slope of the radioâ€"X-ray correlation is found, and we show that such a change could indicate an increasing fraction of cosmic-ray versus thermal energy density in the cluster outskirts. Finally, we investigate the origin of the emission between the relic and the source NGC 4789, and we argue that NGC 4789 could have crossed the shock originating the radio emission visible between its tail and the relic. Mergers between galaxy clusters often drive shocks into the intracluster medium, the effects of which are sometimes visible via temperature and density jumps in the X-ray and via radio emission from relativistic particles energized by the shock’s passage. A2108 was selected as a likely merger system through comparing the X-ray luminosity to the Planck Sunyaevâ€"Zeldovich signal, where this cluster appeared highly X-ray underluminous. Follow-up observations confirmed it to be a merging low-mass cluster featuring two distinct subclusters, both with a highly disturbed X-ray morphology. Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) data in bands 2, 3, & 4 (covering 120â€"750 MHz) show an extended radio feature resembling a radio relic near the location of a temperature discontinuity in the X-rays. We measure a Mach number from the X-ray temperature jump (  X = 1.6 ± 0.2). Several characteristics of radio relics (location and morphology of extended radio emission) are found in A2108, making this cluster one of the few low-mass mergers (M Lâˆ'M = 1.8 ± 0.4 Ă— 1014 M ⊙) likely hosting a radio relic. The radio spectrum is exceptionally steep (α = âˆ'2 at the lowest frequencies), and the radio power is very weak (P 1.4 GHz = 1 Ă— 1022 W Hzâˆ'1). To account for the shock/relic offset, we propose a scenario in which the shock created the relic by re-accelerating a cloud of pre-existing relativistic electrons and then moved away, leaving behind a fading relic. The electron-aging timescale derived from the high-frequency steepening in the relic spectrum is consistent with the shock travel time to the observed X-ray discontinuity. However, the lower flux in GMRT band 4 data causing the steepening could be due to instrumental limitations and deeper radio data are needed to constrain the spectral slope of the relic at high frequencies. A background cluster, 4′ from the merger, may have contributed to the ROSAT and Planck signals, but SZ modeling shows that the merger system is still X-ray underluminous, supporting the use of this approach to identifying merger-disrupted clusters. Radio relics in galaxy clusters are extended synchrotron sources produced by cosmic-ray electrons in the microgauss magnetic field. Many relics are found in the cluster periphery and have a cluster-centric, narrow arc-like shape, which suggests that the electrons are accelerated or reaccelerated by merger shock fronts propagating outward in the intracluster plasma. In the X-ray, some relics do exhibit such shocks at the location of the relic, but many do not. We explore the possibility that radio relics trace not the shock fronts but the shape of the underlying distribution of seed relativistic electrons, lit up by a recent shock passage. We use magnetohydrodynamic simulations of cluster mergers and include bubbles of relativistic electrons injected by jets from the central active galactic nucleus or from an off-center radio galaxy. We show that the merger-driven gas motions (a) can advect the bubble cosmic rays to very large radii and (b) spread the relativistic seed electrons preferentially in the tangential direction—along the gravitational equipotential surfaces—producing extended, filamentary, or sheet-like regions of intracluster plasma enriched with aged cosmic rays, which resemble radio relics. Once a shock front passes across such a region, the sharp radio emission edges would trace the sharp boundaries of these enriched regions rather than the front. We also show that these elongated cosmic-ray features are naturally associated with magnetic fields stretched tangentially along their long axis, which could help explain the high polarization of relics. Relic gravitational waves (GWs) can be produced by primordial magnetic fields. However, not much is known about the resulting GW amplitudes and their dependence on the details of the generation mechanism. Here we treat magnetic field generation through the chiral magnetic effect (CME) as a generic mechanism and explore its dependence on the speed of generation (the product of magnetic diffusivity and characteristic wavenumber) and the speed characterizing the maximum magnetic field strength expected from the CME. When the latter exceeds the former (regime I), which is the regime applicable to the early universe, we obtain an inverse cascade with moderate GW energy that scales with the third power of the magnetic energy. When the generation speed exceeds the CME limit (regime II), the GW energy continues to increase without a corresponding increase of magnetic energy. In the early kinematic phase, the GW energy spectrum (per linear wavenumber interval) has opposite slopes in both regimes and is characterized by an inertial range spectrum in regime I and a white noise spectrum in regime II. The occurrence of these two slopes is shown to be a generic consequence of a nearly monochromatic exponential growth of the magnetic field. Radio relics are elongated sources related to shocks driven by galaxy cluster merger events. Although these objects are highly polarized at GHz frequencies (≳20%), high-resolution studies of their polarization properties are still lacking. We present the first high-resolution and high-sensitivity polarimetry study of the merging galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 in the 1–4 GHz frequency band. We use the QU-fitting approach to model the Stokes I, Q, and U emission, obtaining best-fit intrinsic polarization fraction (p0), intrinsic polarization angle (χ0), rotation measure (RM), and wavelength-dependent depolarization (σRM) maps of the cluster. Our analysis focuses on the northern relic (RN). For the first time in a radio relic, we observe a decreasing polarization fraction in the downstream region. Our findings are possibly explained by geometrical projections and/or by decreasing of the magnetic field anisotropy toward the cluster center. From the amount of depolarization of the only detected background radio galaxy, we estimate a turbulent magnetic field strength of Bturb ∼ 5.6 μG in the relic. Finally, we observe RM fluctuations of about 30 rad m−2 around the median value of 140.8 rad m−2 at the relic position. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ASKAP-EMU survey is a deep wide-field radio continuum survey designed to cover the entire southern sky and a significant fraction of the northern sky up to +30°. Here, we report a discovery of a radio relic in the merging cluster SPT-CL J2023-5535 at z = 0.23 from the ASKAP-EMU pilot 300 square degree survey (800–1088 MHz). The deep high-resolution data reveal a ∼2 Mpc scale radio halo elongated in the east–west direction, coincident with the intracluster gas. The radio relic is located at the western edge of this radio halo stretched ∼0.5 Mpc in the north–south orientation. The integrated spectral index of the radio relic within the narrow bandwidth is. Our weak-lensing analysis shows that the system is massive () and composed of at least three subclusters. We suggest a scenario, wherein the radio features arise from the collision between the eastern and middle subclusters. Our discovery illustrates the effectiveness of the ASKAP-EMU survey in detecting diffuse emissions in galaxy clusters and when completed, the survey will greatly increase the number of merging cluster detections with diffuse radio emissions. Extensive surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope over the past decade, targeting some of the most massive clusters in the sky, have uncovered dozens of galaxy cluster strong lenses. The massive cluster strong-lens scale is typically θE ∼ 10″ to ∼30″–35″, with only a handful of clusters known with Einstein radii θE ∼ 40″ or above (for zsource = 2, nominally). Here we report another very large cluster lens, RXC J0032.1+1808 (z = 0.3956), the second-richest cluster in the redMapper cluster catalog and the 85th most massive cluster in the Planck Sunyaev–Zel'dovich catalog. With our light-traces-mass and fully parametric approaches, we construct strong-lensing models based on 18 multiple images of five background galaxies newly identified in the Hubble data, mainly from the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS), in addition to a known sextuply imaged system in this cluster. Furthermore, we compare these models to Lenstool and GLAFIC models that were produced independently as part of the RELICS program. All models reveal a large effective Einstein radius of θE ≃ 40″ (zsource = 2), owing to the obvious concentration of substructures near the cluster center. Although RXC J0032.1+1808 has a very large critical area and high lensing strength, only three magnified high-redshift candidates are found within the field targeted by RELICS. Nevertheless, we expect many more high-redshift candidates will be seen in wider and deeper observations with Hubble or the James Webb Space Telescope. We used a set of moderately deep and high-resolution optical observations obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope to investigate the properties of the stellar population in the heavily obscured bulge globular cluster (GC) NGC 6256. The analysis of the color–magnitude diagram (CMD) revealed a stellar population with an extended blue horizontal branch severely affected by differential reddening, which was corrected, taking into account color excess variations up to δE(B − V) ∼ 0.51. We implemented a Monte Carlo Markov Chain technique to perform the isochrone fitting of the observed CMD in order to derive the stellar age, the cluster distance, and the average color excess in the cluster direction. Using three different sets of isochrones we found that NGC 6256 is characterized by a very old stellar age around 13.0 Gyr, with a typical uncertainty of ∼0.5 Gyr. We also found an average color excess of E(B − V) = 1.19 and a distance from the Sun of 6.8 kpc. We then derived the cluster gravitational center and measured its absolute proper motion using the Gaia-DR2 catalog. All this was used to back-integrate the cluster orbit in a Galaxy-like potential and measure its integrals of motion. It turned out that NGC 6256 is currently in a low-eccentricity orbit entirely confined within the bulge and its integrals of motion are fully compatible with a cluster purely belonging to the Galaxy native GC population. All these pieces of evidence suggest that NGC 6256 is an extremely old relic of the past history of the Galaxy, formed during the very first stages of its assembly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although a merging galaxy cluster is a useful laboratory to study many important astrophysical processes and fundamental physics, only limited interpretations are possible without careful analysis of the merger scenario. However, the study is demanding because a thorough comparison of multiwavelength observations with detailed numerical simulations is required. In this paper, we present such a study for the off-axis binary merger A115. The system possesses a number of remarkable observational features, but no convincing merger scenario explaining the shape and location of the radio relic in harmony with the orientation of the cometary X-ray tails has been presented. Our hydrodynamical simulation with adaptive mesh refinement suggests that the cometary X-ray tail of A115 might be a slingshot tail that can arise ∼0.3 Gyr after the impact, before the two subclusters reach their apocenters. This scenario can predict the location and orientation of the giant radio relic, which is parallel to the northern X-ray tail. In addition, our study indicates that diffusive shock acceleration alone cannot generate the observed radio power unless aided by stronger magnetic fields and/or more significant presence of fossil electrons. Massive foreground galaxy clusters magnify and distort the light of objects behind them, permitting a view into both the extremely distant and intrinsically faint galaxy populations. We present here the candidate high-redshift galaxies from the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS), a Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescope survey of 41 massive galaxy clusters spanning an area of ≈200 arcmin2. These clusters were selected to be excellent lenses, and we find similar high-redshift sample sizes and magnitude distributions as the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH). We discover 257, 57, and eight candidate galaxies at z ∼ 6, 7, and 8 respectively, (322 in total). The observed (lensed) magnitudes of the z ∼ 6 candidates are as bright as AB mag ∼23, making them among the brightest known at these redshifts, comparable with discoveries from much wider, blank-field surveys. RELICS demonstrates the efficiency of using strong gravitational lenses to produce high-redshift samples in the epoch of reionization. Large surveys of galaxy clusters with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Spitzer, including the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble and the Frontier Fields, have demonstrated the power of strong gravitational lensing to efficiently deliver large samples of high-redshift galaxies. We extend this strategy through a wider, shallower survey named RELICS, the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey, described here. Our 188-orbit Hubble Treasury Program observed 41 clusters at 0.182 ≤ z ≤ 0.972 with Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and WFC3/IR imaging spanning 0.4–1.7 μm. We selected 21 of the most massive clusters known based on Planck PSZ2 estimates and 20 additional clusters based on observed or inferred lensing strength. RELICS observed 46 WFC3/IR pointings (∼200 arcmin2) each with two orbits divided among four filters (F105W, F125W, F140W, and F160W) and ACS imaging as needed to achieve single-orbit depth in each of three filters (F435W, F606W, and F814W). As previously reported by Salmon et al., we discovered over 300 z ∼ 6–10 candidates, including the brightest z ∼ 6 candidates known, and the most distant spatially resolved lensed arc known at z ∼ 10. Spitzer IRAC imaging (945 hr awarded, plus 100 archival, spanning 3.0–5.0 μm) has crucially enabled us to distinguish z ∼ 10 candidates from z ∼ 2 interlopers. For each cluster, two HST observing epochs were staggered by about a month, enabling us to discover 11 supernovae, including 3 lensed supernovae, which we followed up with 20 orbits from our program. Golovich et al. present an optical imaging and spectroscopic survey of 29 radio relic merging galaxy clusters. In this paper, we study this survey to identify substructure and quantify the dynamics of the mergers. Using a combined photometric and spectroscopic approach, we identify the minimum number of substructures in each system to describe the galaxy populations and estimate the line-of-sight velocity difference between likely merging subclusters. We find that the line-of-sight velocity components of the mergers are typically small compared with the maximum 3D relative velocity (usually <1000 km s−1 and often consistent with zero). We also compare our systems to n-body simulation analogs and estimate the viewing angle of the clean mergers in our ensemble. We find that the median system’s separation vector lies within 40° (17°) at a 90% (50%) confidence level. This suggests that the merger axes of these systems are generally in or near the plane of the sky, matching findings in magnetohydrodynamical simulations. In 28 of the 29 systems we identify substructures in the galaxy population aligned with the radio relic(s) and presumed associated merger-induced shock. From this ensemble, we identify eight systems to include in a “gold” sample that is prime for further observation, modeling, and simulation study. Additional papers will present weak-lensing mass maps and dynamical modeling for each merging system, ultimately leading to new insight into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena at some of the largest scales in the universe. We present a catalog of spectroscopic redshifts for SPT-CLJ0615−5746, the most distant cluster in the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey. Using Nod & Shuffle multislit observations with LDSS-3 on Magellan, we identify ∼50 cluster members and derive a cluster redshift of zc = 0.972, with a velocity dispersion of σ = 1244 ± 162 km s−1. We calculate a cluster mass using a σ200 − M200 scaling relation of M200 = (9.6 ± 3.5) × 1014M⊙, in agreement with previous, independent mass measurements of this cluster. In addition, we examine the kinematic state of SPT-CLJ0615−5746, taking into consideration prior investigations of this system. With an elongated profile in lensing mass and X-ray emission, a non-Gaussian velocity dispersion that increases with clustercentric radius, and a brightest cluster galaxy not at rest with the bulk of the system, there are multiple cluster properties that, while not individually compelling, combine to paint a picture that SPT-CLJ0615−5746 is currently being assembled. Strong gravitational lensing (SL) is a powerful means of mapping the distribution of dark matter. In this work, we perform an SL analysis of the prominent X-ray cluster RXJ0152.7-1357 (z = 0.83, also known as CL0152.7-1357) in Hubble Space Telescope images, taken in the framework of the Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey (RELICS). On top of a previously known z = 3.93 galaxy multiply imaged by RXJ0152.7-1357, for which we identify an additional multiple image, guided by a light-traces-mass approach, we identify seven new sets of multiply imaged background sources lensed by this cluster, spanning the redshift range [1.79–3.93]. A total of 25 multiple images are seen over a small area of ∼0.4 arcmin2, allowing us to put relatively high-resolution constraints on the inner matter distribution. Although modestly massive, the high degree of substructure, together with its very elongated shape, makes RXJ0152.7-1357 a very efficient lens for its size. This cluster also comprises the third-largest sample of z ∼ 6–7 candidates in the RELICS survey. Finally, we present a comparison of our resulting mass distribution and magnification estimates with those from a Lenstool model.
