Data from the Pierre Auger Observatory are analyzed to search for anisotropies near the direction of the Galactic Centre at EeV energies. The exposure of the surface array in this part of the sky is already significantly larger than that of the fore-runner experiments. Our results do not support previous findings of localized excesses in the AGASA and SUGAR data. We set an upper bound on a point-like flux of cosmic rays arriving from the Galactic Centre which excludes several scenarios predicting sources of EeV neutrons from Sagittarius $A$. Also the events detected simultaneously by the surface and fluorescence detectors (the `hybrid' data set), which have better pointing accuracy but are less numerous than those of the surface array alone, do not show any significant localized excess from this direction., Comment: Matches published version

We describe a semi-analytical approach to non-linear diffusive shock acceleration in the case in which nuclei other than protons are also accelerated. The structure of the shock is determined by the complex interplay of all nuclei, and in turn this shock structure determines the spectra of all components. The magnetic field amplification upstream is described as due to streaming instability of all nuclear species. The amplified magnetic field is then taken into account for its dynamical feedback on the shock structure as well as in terms of the induced modification of the velocity of the scattering centers that enters the particle transport equation. The spectra of accelerated particles are steep enough to be compared with observed cosmic ray spectra only if the magnetic field is sufficiently amplified and the scattering centers have high speed in the frame of the background plasma. We discuss the implications of this generalized approach on the structure of the knee in the all-particle cosmic ray spectrum, which we interpret as due to an increasingly heavier chemical composition above $10^{15}$eV. The effects of a non trivial chemical composition at the sources on the gamma ray emission from a supernova remnant when gamma rays are of hadronic origin are also discussed., 23 pages, 5 figures, minor changes to reflect the published version

The supernova paradigm for the origin of galactic cosmic rays has been deeply affected by the development of the non-linear theory of particle acceleration at shock waves. Here we discuss the implications of applying such theory to the calculation of the spectrum of cosmic rays at Earth as accelerated in supernova remnants and propagating in the Galaxy. The spectrum is calculated taking into account the dynamical reaction of the accelerated particles on the shock, the generation of magnetic turbulence which enhances the scattering near the shock, and the dynamical reaction of the amplified field on the plasma. Most important, the spectrum of cosmic rays at Earth is calculated taking into account the flux of particles escaping from upstream during the Sedov-Taylor phase and the adiabatically decompressed particles confined in the expanding shell and escaping at later times. We show how the spectrum obtained in this way is well described by a power law in momentum with spectral index close to -4, despite the concave shape of the instantaneous spectra of accelerated particles. On the other hand we also show how the shape of the spectrum is sensible to details of the acceleration process and environment which are and will probably remain very poorly known., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, published version (references updated)

The supernova paradigm for the origin of galactic cosmic rays can be tested using multifrequency observations of both non-thermal and thermal emission from supernova remnants. The smoking gun of hadronic acceleration in these sources can, however, only be provided by the detection of a high energy neutrino signal. Here we apply the theory of non-linear particle acceleration at supernova shocks to the case of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946, which is becoming the stereotypical example of a possible hadronic accelerator after the detection of high energy gamma rays by the HESS telescope. Our aim is twofold: on one hand we want to address the uncertainties in the discrimination between a hadronic and a leptonic interpretation of the gamma ray emission, mainly related to the possibility of a statistical uncertainty in the energy determination of the gamma ray photons in the TeV region. On the other we want to stress how a km cube neutrino telescope would break the degeneracy and provide evidence for efficient cosmic ray acceleration in RX J1713.7-3946. A 3 sigma evidence would require about two years of observation., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astropaticle Physics

If ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are accelerated at astrophysical point sources, the identification of such sources can be achieved if there is some kind of radiation at observable wavelengths that may be associated with the acceleration and/or propagation processes. No radiation of this type has so far been detected or at least no such connection has been claimed. The process of photopion production during the propagation of UHECRs from the sources to the Earth results in the generation of charged and neutral pions. The neutral (charged) pions in turn decay to gamma quanta and electrons that initiate an electromagnetic cascade in the universal photon background. We calculate the flux of this gamma radiation in the GeV-TeV energy range and find that for source luminosities compatible with those expected from small scale anisotropies in the directions of arrival of UHECRs, the fluxes can be detectable by future Cerenkov gamma ray telescopes, such as VERITAS and HESS, provided the intergalactic magnetic field is not larger than $\sim 10^{-10}$ Gauss and for source distances comparable with the loss length for photopion production., accepted for publication on Astroparticle Physics

Particles crossing repeatedly the surface of a shock wave can be energized by first order Fermi acceleration. The linear theory is successful in describing the acceleration process as long as the pressure of the accelerated particles remains negligible compared to the kinetic pressure of the incoming gas (the so-called test particle approximation). When this condition is no longer fulfilled, the shock is modified by the pressure of the accelerated particles in a nonlinear way, namely the spectrum of accelerated particles and the shock structure determine each other. In this paper we present the first description of the nonlinear regime of shock acceleration when the shock propagates in a medium where seed particles are already present. This case may apply for instance to supernova shocks propagating into the interstellar medium, where cosmic rays are in equipartition with the gas pressure. We find that the appearance of multiple solutions, previously found in alternative descriptions of the nonlinear regime, occurs also for the case of reacceleration of seed particles. Moreover, for parameters of concern for supernova shocks, the shock is likely to turn nonlinear mainly due to the presence of the pre-existing cosmic rays, rather than due to the acceleration of new particles from the thermal pool. We investigate here the onset of the nonlinear regime for the three following cases: 1) seed particles in equipartition with the gas pressure; 2) particles accelerated from the thermal pool; 3) combination of 1) and 2)., Comment: To appear in Astroparticle Physics

Hierarchical clustering of dark matter halos is thought to describe well the large scale structure of the universe. The baryonic component of the halos is shock heated to the virial temperature while a small fraction of the energy flux through the shocks may be energized through the first order Fermi process to relativistic energy per particle. It has been proposed that the electrons accelerated in this way may upscatter the photons of the universal microwave background to gamma ray energies and indeed generate a diffuse background of gamma rays that compares well to the observations. In this paper we calculate the spectra of the particles accelerated at the merger shocks and re-evaluate the contribution of structure formation to the extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background (EDGRB), concluding that this contribution adds up to at most 10% of the observed EDGRB., 19 pages, 4 figures. Synchrotron emission of relativistic particles in magnetic fields is a process of paramount importance in astrophysics. Although known for over 30 years, there are still aspects of this radiative process that have received little attention, mainly because they appear only in extreme conditions. In the present paper, we first provide a general introduction to synchrotron emission, using a formalism that represents a generalization of the standard calculations. The use of this formalism allows us to discuss situations in which charged particles can radiate coherently, with special attention for the cases in which the production occurs in the form of a bunch of particles created in a pulse of very short duration. We calculate the spectra of the radiation for both monoenergetic particles and distributions of particles with different Lorentz factors. For both cases we study the conditions for the coherent effects to appear, and demonstrate that in the limit of incoherent emission we reobtain the well known results.

We consider the possibility that ultra-high energy cosmic rays originate from the annihilation of relic superheavy dark-matter particles. We find that a cross section of ~ 10^{-26}cm^2 (M_X/10^{12}GeV)^{3/2} is required to account for the observed rate of super-GZK events if the superheavy dark matter follows a Navarro-Frenk-White density profile. This would require extremely large-l contributions to the annihilation cross section. We also calculate the possible signature from annihilation in sub-galactic clumps of dark matter and find that the signal from sub-clumps dominates and may explain the observed flux with a much smaller cross section than if the superheavy dark matter is smoothly distributed. Finally, we discuss the expected anisotropy in the arrival directions of the cosmic rays, which is a characteristic signature of this scenario., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Astropart. We calculate numerically the spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays on Earth assuming that their sources are distributed in space like the observed galaxies. We use the CfA2 and the PSCz galaxy redshift surveys to model the local galaxy distribution, properly taking into account the galaxy selection functions for each survey. When the survey selection effects are included, we find that the local overdensity is only a factor of two, an order of magnitude less than used in some earlier studies. An overdensity of two is not enough to bridge the gap between the predicted number of events above $10^{20}$ eV and the measured flux at these highest energies. This conclusion is particularly strong for soft injection spectra ($\propto E^{-3}$) where the observed number of events is 6 $\sigma$ higher than the expected one. However, if the injection spectrum is hard ($\propto E^{-2}$), the small local overdensity helps bring the present data within 2$\sigma$ of the low number of events predicted above $10^{20}$ eV. In this case, the Greisen-Zatzepin-Kuzmin cutoff is not a {\it cutoff} but rather a {\it feature} in the cosmic ray spectrum.

We calculate the flux of radio, hard X-ray and UV radiation from clusters of galaxies as produced by synchrotron emission and Inverse Compton Scattering of electrons generated as secondaries in cosmic ray interactions in the intracluster medium. Both the spatial distribution of cosmic rays due to their diffusion and the spatial distribution of the intracluster gas are taken into account. Our calculations are specifically applied to the case of the Coma cluster. The fluxes and spectra of the radio halo emission and of the hard X-ray excess from Coma can be explained in this model if an average magnetic field $B \sim 0.1\mu G$ is assumed. However, such a low value for the intracluster magnetic field implies a large cosmic ray energy density which in turn is responsible, through neutral pion decay, for a gamma ray flux above 100 MeV which exceeds the EGRET upper limit. This gamma ray bound can be relaxed if the hard X-ray excess and the radio halo emission from Coma are not due to the same population of electrons. We finally stress the unique role that the new generation gamma ray satellites will play to discriminate among different models for the non thermal emission in clusters of galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 3 Figures, Latex (using epsfig, elsart), to appear in Astroparticle Physics. The nature of the knee in the all-particle spectrum of cosmic rays remains subject of much investigation, especially in the aftermath of recent measurements claiming the detection of a knee-like feature in the spectrum of the light component of cosmic rays at energy $\sim$700 TeV, at odds with the standard picture in which the knee in the all-particle spectrum is dominated by light cosmic rays. Here we investigate the implications of this and other scenarios in terms of the measured flux of atmospheric neutrinos. In particular we discuss the possibility that the spectrum of atmospheric neutrinos in the region $\gtrsim$50 TeV may provide information about the different models for the mass composition in the knee region. We investigate the dependence of the predicted atmospheric neutrino flux on the shape of the light cosmic ray spectra and on the interaction models describing the development of showers in the atmosphere. The implications of all these factors for the identification of the onset of an astrophysical neutrino component are discussed., 19 pages, 6 figures, 1 table.
