To investigate the differential rotation of sunspot groups using the Greenwich data, we propose an approach based on a statistical analysis of the histograms of particular longitudinal velocities in different latitude intervals. The general statistical velocity distributions for all such intervals are shown to be described by two rather than one normal distribution, so that two fundamental rotation modes exist simultaneously: fast and slow. The differentiality of rotation for the modes is the same: the coefficient at sin2 in Faye’s law is 2.87-2.88 deg/day, while the equatorial rotation rates differ significantly, 0.27 deg/day. On the other hand, an analysis of the longitudinal velocities for the previously revealed two differing populations of sunspot groups has shown that small short-lived groups (SSGs) are associated with the fast rotation mode, while large long-lived groups (LLGs) are associated with both fast and slow modes. The results obtained not only suggest a real physical difference between the two populations of sunspots but also give new empirical data for the development of a dynamo theory, in particular, for the theory of a spatially distributed dynamo. Based on an analysis of the observational data for solar cycles 12-23 (Royal Greenwich Observatory-USAF/NOAA Sunspot Data), we have studied various parameters of the 'Maunder butterflies.' Based on the observational data for cycles 16-23, we have found that BT/ Land S depend linearly on each other, where B is the mean magnetic field of the cycle, T is the cycle duration, S is the cycle strength, and L is the mean sunspot latitude in the cycle (the arithmetic mean of the absolute values of the mean latitudes in the north and south). We have investigated the behavior of dynamo waves within the framework of a nonlinear αω-dynamo by taking into account the thickness of the convective zone, turbulent diffusivity, and meridional circulation. We show that there exists a regime in the model where short and longer patterns are simultaneously observed in the butterfly diagrams for the magnetic field. This regime is similar to the mixed cycle of the Sun, when fast quasi-biennial oscillations are observed against the background of the 22-year cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have constructed a dynamo model for the magnetic field in spiral galaxies that takes into account the differences in star formation rates in different galaxies. The difficulty in constructing the model is that the star formation rate does not enter directly into the equations of magnetohydrodynamics, which include only the root-mean-square velocity of the interstellar gas, its density, and the half-thickness of the ionized gas disk. We propose a parametrization of these quantities that relates them to the star formation rate and investigate our model in terms of the so-called no- z approximation, which neglects the details of the magnetic field structure in a direction perpendicular to the galactic disk. The influence of the star formation rate on the galactic dynamo is a threshold one. This influence is small at moderate star formation rates and significant only at very high star formation rates. If the starburst intensity reaches some critical level (exceeding that in the Milky Way by an order of magnitude), then the large-scale magnetic field is destroyed and it is restored only after completion of the starburst. The behavior of dynamo waves in a two-layer medium is investigated in terms of the Parker dynamo model. The solar cycle duration is shown to depend on the ratio of turbulent diffusivities in the layers. Meridional circulation has been incorporated into the Parker system. An increase in the intensity of meridional flows is shown to decelerate the propagation of dynamo waves. The minimum of solar magnetic activity can occur not only in the case of intense meridional circulation in both layers but also when a difference in physical characteristics arises between the layers and the meridional flows are moderate. The standard dynamo models that explain the origin of the large-scale magnetic fields of celestial bodies are related to the view of turbulent or convective flows as a locally statistically homogeneous and isotropic, but not mirror-symmetric, random field. Using an ABC flow, which is a classical example of a flow with deterministic chaos, we ascertain the extent to which the behavior of the magnetic field in such a flow is similar to the behavior of the magnetic field in mirror-asymmetric turbulence.
