Abstract: Recent theoretical predictions of the lowest very high energy (VHE) luminosity of SN 1006 are only a factor 5 below the previously published H.E.S.S. upper limit, thus motivating further in-depth observations of this source. Deep observations at VHE energies (above 100 GeV) were carried out with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) of Cherenkov Telescopes from 2003 to 2008. More than 100 hours of data have been collected and subjected to an improved analysis procedure. Observations resulted in the detection of VHE gamma-rays from SN 1006. The measured gamma-ray spectrum is compatible with a power-law, the flux is of the order of 1% of that detected from the Crab Nebula, and is thus consistent with the previously established H.E.S.S. upper limit. The source exhibits a bipolar morphology, which is strongly correlated with non-thermal X-rays. Because the thickness of the VHE-shell is compatible with emission from a thin rim, particle acceleration in shock waves is likely to be the origin of the gamma-ray signal. The measured flux level can be accounted for by inverse Compton emission, but a mixed scenario that includes leptonic and hadronic components and takes into account the ambient matter density inferred from observations also leads to a satisfactory description of the multi-wavelength spectrum.

Abstract: The measurement of an excess in the cosmic-ray electron spectrum between 300 and 800 GeV by the ATIC experiment has – together with the PAMELA detection of a rise in the positron fraction up to ≈100 GeV – motivated many interpretations in terms of dark matter scenarios; alternative explanations assume a nearby electron source like a pulsar or supernova remnant. Here we present a measurement of the cosmic-ray electron spectrum with H.E.S.S. starting at 340 GeV. While the overall electron flux measured by H.E.S.S. is consistent with the ATIC data within statistical and systematic errors, the H.E.S.S. data exclude a pronounced peak in the electron spectrum as suggested for interpretation by ATIC. The H.E.S.S. data follow a power-law spectrum with spectral index of 3.0±0.1(stat.)±0.3(syst.), which steepens at about 1 TeV.

Abstract: Aims. This article presents very-high-energy (VHE; E> 100 GeV) data from the γ-ray binary PSR B1259-63 as taken during the years 2005, 2006 and before as well as shortly after the 2007 periastron passage. These data extend the knowledge of the lightcurve of this object to all phases of the 3.4 year binary orbit. The lightcurve constrains physical mechanisms present in this TeV source.

Abstract: Observations of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104), which contains at least 23 ms pulsars, were performed with the HESS telescope system. The observations lead to an upper limit of $F(E>800\ {\rm GeV}) < 6.7 \times 10^{-13}~{\rm cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$on the integral γ-ray photon flux from 47 Tucanae. Considering millisecond pulsars as the unique potential source of γ-rays in the globular cluster, constraints based on emission models are derived: on the magnetic field in the average pulsar nebula and on the conversion efficiency of spin-down power to γ-ray photons or to relativistic leptons.

Abstract: We discovered the >100 GeV γ-ray source, HESS J1713-381, apparently associated with the shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 37B, using HESS in 2006. In 2007 we performed X-ray follow-up observations with Chandrawith the aim of identifying a synchrotron counterpart to the TeV source and/or thermal emission from the SNR shell. These new Chandradata, together with additional TeV data, allow us to investigate the nature of this object in much greater detail than was previously possible. The new X-ray data reveal thermal emission from a ~4'region in close proximity to the radio shell of CTB 37B. The temperature of this emission implies an age for the remnant of ~5000 years and an ambient gas density of ~0.5 cm-3. Both these estimates are considerably uncertain due to the asymmetry of the SNR and possible modifications of the kinematics due to efficient cosmic ray (CR) acceleration. A bright (≈7 $\times$10-13erg cm-2s-1) and unresolved (<1″) source (CXOU J171405.7-381031), with a soft (Γ≈3.3) non-thermal spectrum is also detected in coincidence with the radio shell. Absorption indicates a column density consistent with the thermal emission from the shell, suggesting a genuine association rather than a chance alignment. The observed TeV morphology is consistent with an origin in the complete shell of CTB 37B. The lack of diffuse non-thermal X-ray emission suggests an origin of the γ-ray emission via the decay of neutral pions produced in interactions of protons and nuclei, rather than inverse Compton (IC) emission from relativistic electrons.

Abstract: Aims. HESS J1745-303 is an extended, unidentified VHE (very high energy) gamma-ray source discovered using HESS in the Galactic Plane Survey. Since no obvious counterpart has previously been found in longer-wavelength data, the processes that power the VHE emission are not well understood.

Abstract: Aims. The BL Lac object RGB J0152+017($z=0.080$) was predicted to be a very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) γ-ray source, due to its high X-ray and radio fluxes. Our aim is to understand the radiative processes by investigating the observed emission and its production mechanism using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) experiment.

Abstract: Context.The detection of gamma rays in the very-high-energy (VHE) energy range (100 GeV–100 TeV) provides a direct view of the parent population of ultra-relativistic particles found in astrophysical sources. For this reason, VHE gamma rays are useful for understanding the underlying astrophysical processes in non-thermal sources.

Abstract: Aims.Our aim is to study the production mechanism for very-high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) γ-rays in distant active galactic nuclei (AGN) and use the observed VHE spectrum to derive limits on the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). We also want to determine physical quantities through the modeling of the object's broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED).

Abstract: Context.The blazar 1ES 1101-232was observed with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) of Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (ACT) in 2004 and 2005, for a live time of 43 h. VHE (E> 1011eV) γ-rays were detected for the first time from this object.

28. The broad band spectrum and variability of NGC 4151 observed by BeppoSAX

Abstract: We present an analysis of all BeppoSAX observations of NGC 4151. This source was observed 5 times from 1996 to 2001 with durations ranging from a day to four days. The intrinsic continuum (described as a cut-off power law) is absorbed at low energies by a complex system: a cold patchy absorber plus a warm uniform screen photoionised by the central continuum. We find that this “dual absorber” is the main driver of the observed variability, up to a factor of eight, at 3 keV. In particular the covering fraction of the cold absorber changes on time scales of the order of a day, supporting its association with the broad-line region. The column density of the warm gas varies on a longer time scale (months to year). Some of the small amplitude spectral variability above 10 keV can be explained with an intrinsic variation (with variation of the photon index $\Delta\Gamma \sim 0.2$). The flux below 1 keV remains constant confirming an extended origin. Its spectrum is reproduced by a combination of a thermal component (with temperature $kT=0.15$keV) and a power law with the same slope as the intrinsic continuum, but with an intensity of a few percent. A Compton reflection component is significantly detected in 1996 (averaged value of $\Omega/2\pi \sim0.4$, with the solid angle Ωcovered by the reflecting medium), with intensity decreasing on a time scale of a year, and it desappears in 2000 and 2001. The long time scale of variations argues for an association with an optically thick torus at a distance of a few light years. An iron line was detected in all spectra. Its energy is consistent with fluorescence by cold iron. We find that the line is variable. Its behaviour is reproduced by a variable component proportional to the level of the reflection flux plus a constant component. The flux of the latter is consistent with the extended line emission observed by Chandra. We conclude that the first component likely arises from the torus and the second is produced in the extended narrow-line region.

Abstract: We report the results of an observation of Cygnus X-1performed on June 7–11, 2003 with INTEGRALthat we combine with simultaneous radio observations with the Ryle telescope. Both spectral and variability properties of the source indicate that Cygnus X-1was in an Intermediate State. The INTEGRALspectrum shows a high-energy cut-off or break around 100 keV. The shape of this cut-off differs from pure thermal Comptonisation, suggesting the presence of a non-thermal component at higher energies. The average broad band spectrum is well represented by hybrid thermal/non-thermal Comptonisation models. However, models with mono-energetic injection, or models with an additional soft component are favoured over standard power-law acceleration models. During the 4 day long observation the broad band (3–200 keV) luminosity varied by up to a factor of 2.6 and the source showed an important spectral variability. A principal component analysis demonstrates that most of this variability occurs through 2 independent modes. The first mode consists in changes in the overall luminosity on time scale of hours with almost constant spectra (responsible for 68% of the variance) that are strikingly uncorrelated with the variable radio flux. We interpret this variability mode as variations of the dissipation rate in the corona, possibly associated with magnetic flares. The second variability mode consists in a pivoting of the spectrum around ~10 keV (27% of the variance). It acts on a longer time-scale: initially soft, the spectrum hardens in the first part of the observation and then softens again. This pivoting pattern is strongly correlated with the radio (15 GHz) emission: radio fluxes are stronger when the INTEGRALspectrum is harder We propose that the pivoting mode represents a “mini” state transition from a nearly High Soft State to a nearly Low Hard State, and back. This mini-transition would be caused by changes in the soft cooling photons flux in the hot Comptonising plasma associated with an increase of the temperature of the accretion disc. The jet power then appears to be anti-correlated with the disc luminosity and unrelated to the coronal power. This is in sharp contrast with previous results obtained for the Low Hard State, suggesting a different mode of coupling between the jet, the cold disc, and the corona in Intermediate States. From this interpretation we also infer that the bolometric luminosity jumps by a factor of about 2 during the transition hard to soft, suggesting a radiatively inefficient accretion flow in the Low Hard State.

30. A unified accretion-ejection paradigm for black hole X-ray binaries

Abstract: We present a new picture for the central regions of Black Hole X-ray Binaries. In our view, these central regions have a multi-flow configuration which consists in (1) an outer standard accretion disc down to a transition radius rJ; (2) an inner magnetized accretion disc below rJdriving (3) a non relativistic self-collimated electron-proton jet surrounding, when adequate conditions for pair creation are met; (4) a ultra relativistic electron-positron beam. This accretion-ejection paradigm provides a simple explanation to the canonical spectral states, from radio to X/γ-rays, by varying the transition radius rJand disc accretion rate $\dot m$independently. Large values of rJcorrespond to the Quiescent state for low $\dot m$and the Hard state for larger $\dot m$. These states are characterized by the presence of a steady electron-proton MHD jet emitted by the disc below rJ. The hard X-ray component is expected to form at the jet basis. When rIbecomes smaller than the marginally stable orbit ri, the whole disc resembles a standard accretion disc with no jet, characteristic of the Soft state. Intermediate states correspond to situations where $r_J \ga r_i$. At large $\dot m$, an unsteady pair cascade process is triggered within the jet axis, giving birth to flares and ejection of relativistic pair blobs. This would correspond to the luminous intermediate state, sometimes referred to as the Very High state, with its associated superluminal motions. The variation of rJindependently of $\dot m$is a necessary ingredient in this picture. It arises from the presence of a large scale vertical magnetic field threading the disc. Features such as possible hysteresis and the presence of quasi-periodic oscillations would naturally fit within this new framework.

Abstract: IGR J19140+0951 (formerly known as IGR J19140+098) was discovered with the INTEGRALsatellite in March 2003. We report the details of the discovery, using an improved position for the analysis. We have performed a simultaneous study of the 5–100 keV JEM-X and ISGRI spectra from which we can distinguish two different states. From the results of our analysis we propose that IGR J19140+0951 is a persistent Galactic X-ray binary, probably hosting a neutron star although a black hole cannot be completely ruled out.

Abstract: We present the first BeppoSAXobservation (0.1 to 220 keV) of the quasar Mrk 205. We have searched for the unusual Fe line profile observed in the XMM-Newtonspectrum which has been widely discussed in the recent literature. We find no evidence for a broad, ionized Fe line component in our data. We detect for the first time a Compton hump in this object. When this component is included in the fit, the line strength diminishes, in agreement with a recent re-analysis of the XMM-Newtondata, but with better constraints on the reflection component thanks to the PDS instrument (15-220 keV). We interpret this fact as another indication for illumination of distant, cold material rather than reprocessing in the highly ionized inner part of an accretion disk. We cannot constrain the presence of a high energy cutoff but we confirm the existence of a variable soft excess (one year time scale).

33. Physical interpretation of the NGC 7469 UV/X-ray variability

Abstract: We present a re-analysis of the simultaneous ~30 day IUE/XTE observation of NGC 7469 done in 1996. Our main progress in this paper, in comparison to previous spectral analyses (Nandra et al. [CITE]), is to adopt and fit directly to the data a detailed model of the Comptonized spectrum. This firstly allows one to fit simultaneously the data from the UV to the hard X-ray band in a self-consistent way and secondly it gives direct constraints on the physical parameters of the disc-corona system, like the temperature and optical depth of the corona. Our results are completely consistent with a slab geometry where all the observed UV emission is supposed to cross the corona but more photon-starved geometries also give acceptable fits. Whatever the geometry, the UV seed photon emission appears to be dominated by the reprocessing of the X-rays. We also found very interesting correlations between the different model parameters, the most important one being the anticorrelation between the corona temperature kTeand the UV flux FUV. Such an anticorrelation is clearly inconsistent with a fixed disc-corona configuration and suggests a variation of the geometry of the system.  We also find a correlation between the corona optical depth and the X-ray flux which may reflect processes linked to the corona formation. During the observations, NGC 7469 appears to accrete near its Eddington limit. This source could then be an example of magnetically dominated disc-corona system as recently proposed by Merloni ([CITE]). Finally, these data strongly support the presence of a pair free corona.

34. Evolution of the X-ray spectrum in the flare model of Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract: Nayakshin & Kazanas ([CITE]) have considered the time-dependent illumination of an accretion disc in Active Galactic Nuclei, in the lamppost model, where it is assumed that an X-ray source illuminates the whole inner-disc region in a relatively steady way. We extend their study to the flare model, which postulates the release of a large X-ray flux above a small region of the accretion disc. A fundamental difference to the lamppost model is that the region of the disc below the flare is not illuminated before the onset of the flare. After the onset, the temperature and the ionization state of the irradiated skin respond immediately to the increase of the continuum, but pressure equilibrium is achieved later. A few typical test models show that the reflected spectrum that follows immediately the increase in continuum flux should always display the characteristics of a highly illuminated but dense gas, i.e. very intense X-ray emission lines and ionization edges in the soft X-ray range. The behaviour of the iron line is however different in the case of a “moderate" and a “strong” flare: for a moderate flare, the spectrum displays a neutral component of the Fe Kaline at 6.4 keV, gradually leading to more highly ionized lines. For a strong flare, the lines are already emitted by FeXXV (around 6.7 keV) after the onset, and are very intense, with an equivalent width of several hundreds eV. A strong flare is also characterized by a steep soft X-ray spectrum. The variation timescale in the flare model is likely smaller than in the lamppost model, due to the smaller dimension of the emission region, so the timescale for pressure equilibrium is long compared to the duration of a flare. It is therefore highly probable that several flares contribute at the same time to the luminosity. We find that the observed correlations between R, G, and the X-ray flux are well accounted for by a combination of flares having not achieved pressure equilibrium, also strongly suggesting that the observed spectrum is always dominated by regions in non-pressure equilibrium, typical of the onset of the flares. Finally, a flare being confined to a small region of the disc, the spectral lines should be narrow (except for a weak Compton broadening) and Doppler shifted, as stressed by Nayakshin & Kazanas ([CITE]). All these features should constitute specific variable signatures of the flare model, distinguishing it from the lamppost model. It is however difficult, on the basis of the present observations and models, to conclude in favor of one of the hypothese.

35. Compton reflection and iron fluorescence in BeppoSAX observations of Seyfert type 1 galaxies

Abstract: A sample of nine bright Seyfert 1 and NELG type galaxies, observed with BeppoSAX, is analyzed to assess on a truly broad band basis (0.1–200 keV) the issue of the spectral contributions of Compton reflection and iron line fluorescence from circumnuclear gas. The empirical description adopted for the direct continuum is the commonly used power law with an exponential cut–off. The most direct test of the theoretical predictions, namely that the equivalent width of the line, $W_{\alpha}$, and the strength Rof the reflection relative to the direct continuum are closely related to each other, gives a substantially positive result, that is their mean ratio is very close to expectation, and only a modest spread in the iron abundance seems implied. The existence of a steep correlation between Rand the slope Γof the power law is not confirmed. A weak evidence is found that the existence of a very shallow trend to increase on average with Γcannot be altogether excluded in both Rand $W_{\alpha}$, but needs to be tested with a larger sample. The energy Efin the exponential cut–off spans a range from about 80 to more than 300 keV. A possible correlation is found, with Efincreasing on average with Γ: if ignored, for instance by keeping Efat a fixed value in a sample study, it could be cause of artificial steepening in a correlation between Rand Γ.

Abstract: We report on the detection of a rapidly variable narrow Fe Kαline in Mkn 841. The source has been observed two times by XMM-Newton and simultaneously with BeppoSAX. The two observations, of about 10 ks long each, were separated by ~15 hours. The line flux reaches a maximum during the first observation and is significantly reduced in the second one. The continuum shape and flux, instead, keep roughly constant between the two pointings. Such rapid variability of a narrow (unresolved by the XMM-pn instrument) line has never been reported in the past. These results are not easily explained in the standard cold reflection model where the narrow line component is supposed to be produced far from the primary X-ray source (e.g. from the torus) and is thus not expected to vary rapidly. Different interpretations are discussed.

37. The BeppoSAX broad-band spectrum and variability of the Seyfert 1 NGC 3783

Abstract: BeppoSAX observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3783 for ~5 days from 1998 June 6 to 1998 June 10. The average flux during the observation was $F_{2-10\,\rm keV}\sim 6\times 10^{-11} \;\rm erg\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}$. The long exposure provided a very high quality spectrum that exhibits all the typical features of Seyfert 1s. The high energy cut-off of the intrinsic continuum, at $E_{\rm c}=340\pm^{560}_{107}$keV, was detected for the first time in this object. During the observation the source showed modest flux variations (~20% in 2–10 keV) and spectral variability that can be completely explained by a change of the intrinsic slope $\Delta \Gamma\sim 0.1$. NGC 3783 is one of the few Seyfert 1s that exhibits a soft emission component in the BeppoSAX spectrum. This soft excess is well reproduced by a black body component with temperature $kT\sim0.2$keV. A warm absorber is also required to fit the soft X-ray spectrum. Both reprocessing features, the Compton reflection hump and the Fe emission line, were detected in our observation. In addition to a narrow iron line (as observed by Chandra) a broad component with $\sigma=0.72\pm^{1.28}_{0.27}$keV and $EW=115\pm76$eV, is required to fit the line. The observed Compton hump and the Fe line are well reproduced with the ionized ($\log\xi=2.73\pm^{0.04}_{0.05}$) disc reflection model of Ross & Fabian. In this case the soft excess observed below 2 keV can be accounted for by the disc emissivity and no additional soft X-rays component is required to fit the spectrum.

Abstract: We present and discuss BeppoSAX observations of Mrk 841 and Mrk 335, two Seyfert 1 galaxies in which previous observations have established the presence of soft excesses. We confirm the soft excess in both sources, even if for Mrk 841 a warm absorber provides a fit almost as good as the one with a true excess. As far as the hard X-ray continuum is concerned, a Comptonization model provides a fit as good as a power law and a physically sound solution for Mrk 841. For Mrk 335, the Comptonization model gives a result which is somewhat better on statistical ground, but rather problematic on physical ground. The most interesting results regard the reprocessing components. For Mrk 841 we find a very large reflection continuum but an almost normal iron line equivalent width even if, within the errors, a solution in which both components are a factor ~2 larger than expected for an accretion disc is still marginally acceptable. If this is the case, an anisotropy of the primary emission seems the best explanation. On the contrary, in Mrk 335 we find a very large iron line EWbut a reflection component not accordingly large. In this case, the best solution seems to be in terms of reflection from an ionized disc.

39. Pair creation at shocks: Application to the high energy emission of compact objects

Abstract: We investigate the effect of pair creation on a shock structure. Particles, accelerated in the shock via the first order Fermi process, are supposed to cool by the inverse Compton process on external soft photons, resulting in a cut-off power law shape of the particle distribution function. The high energy photons produced are thus able to create pairs, through photon-photon annihilation. The increase of the pair pressure may then be sufficient to modify the shock profile. We show that there is even a limit of the pair pressure (of the order of 20% of the ram pressure of the upstream flow) above which the shock can no longer exist. Conversely, significant changes of the flow velocity profile will also modify the spectral index and the high energy cut-off of the particle distribution function. Hence the number of particles able to trigger the pair creation process will change, modifying the pair creation rate accordingly. Taking into account these different processes, we self-consistently derive the flow velocity profile and the particle distribution function. We show that, in some regions of the parameter space, the system can converge towards stationary states where pair creation and hydrodynamical effects balance. We discuss the application of this model to explain the high energy emission observed in compact objects. We show that hard X-ray spectra ($\alpha_{\rm X}< 1.$) are only obtained for low pair pressures and we don't expect any strong annihilation line in this case. We also suggest a possible variability mechanism if the soft photon compactness itself depends on the pair density of the hot plasma, such as is expected in reillumination models.

40. Very high energy ?-ray observations of the binary PSR?B1259?63/SS2883 around the 2007 Periastron

Abstract: Aims. This article presents very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100?GeV) data from the ?-ray binary PSR?B1259-63 as taken during the years 2005, 2006 and before as well as shortly after the 2007 periastron passage. These data extend the knowledge of the lightcurve of this object to all phases of the 3.4?year binary orbit. The lightcurve constrains physical mechanisms present in this TeV source.Methods. Observations of VHE ?-rays with the HESS telescope array using the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique were performed. The HESS?instrument features an angular resolution of < 0.1? and an energy resolution of < 20%. Gamma-ray events in an energy range of 0.5-70?TeV were recorded. From these data, energy spectra and lightcurve with a monthly time sampling were extracted.Results. VHE ?-ray emission from PSR?B1259-63?was detected with an overall significance of 9.5?standard deviations using 55h of exposure, obtained from April to August 2007. The monthly flux of ?-rays during the observation period was measured, yielding VHE lightcurve data for the early pre-periastron phase of the system for the first time. No spectral variability was found on timescales of months. The spectrum is described by a power law with a photon index of ? = 2.8 ?0.2stat?0.2sysand flux normalisation ?0= (1.1 ?0.1stat?0.2sys) ? 10-12?TeV-1?cm-2?s-1. PSR?B1259-63?was also monitored in 2005 and 2006, far from periastron passage, comprising 8.9?h and 7.5?h of exposure, respectively. No significant excess of ?-rays is seen in those observations.Conclusions. PSR B1259-63? has been re-confirmed as a variable TeV ?-ray emitter. The firm detection of VHE photons emitted at a true anomaly ??-0.35 of the pulsar orbit, i.e.?already ~50?days prior to the periastron passage, disfavors the stellar disc target scenario as a primary emission mechanism, based on current knowledge about the companion star's disc inclination, extension, and density profile.

Abstract: Aims. Very-high-energy (VHE; ?100?GeV) ?-rays are expected from ?-ray bursts (GRBs) in some scenarios. Exploring this photon energy regime is necessary for understanding the energetics and properties of GRBs. Methods. GRBs have been one of the prime targets for the HESS experiment, which makes use of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) to detect VHE ?-rays. Dedicated observations of 32?GRB positions were made in the years 2003?2007 and a search for VHE ?-ray counterparts of these GRBs was made. Depending on the visibility and observing conditions, the observations mostly start minutes to hours after the burst and typically last two hours.Results. Results from observations of 22?GRB positions are presented. Evidence of a VHE signal was found neither in observations of any individual GRBs nor from stacking data from subsets of GRBs with higher expected VHE flux according to a model-independent ranking scheme. Upper limits for the VHE??-ray flux from the GRB positions were derived. For those GRBs with measured redshifts, differential upper limits at the energy threshold after correcting for absorption due to extra-galactic background light are also presented.

Abstract: Aims. A detailed study of the spectrum and variability of the source HESS J1745-290 in the Galactic Center (GC) region using new data from the H.E.S.S. array of Cherenkov telescopes is presented. Flaring activity and quasi periodic oscillations (QPO) of HESS J1745-290 are investigated.Methods. The image analysis is performed with a combination of a semi-analytical shower model and the statistical moment-based Hillas technique. The spectrum and lightcurves of HESS J1745-290 are derived with a likelihood method based on a spectral shape hypothesis. Rayleigh tests and Fourier analysis of the H.E.S.S. GC signal are used to study the periodicity of the source.Results. With a three-fold increase in statistics compared to previous work, a deviation from a simple power law spectrum is detected for the first time. The measured energy spectrum over the three years 2004, 2005 and 2006 of data taking is compatible with both a power law spectrum with an exponential cut-off and a broken power law spectrum. The curvature of the energy spectrum is likely to be intrinsic to the photon source, as opposed to effects of interstellar absorption. The power law spectrum with an exponential cut-off is characterized by a photon index of 2.10 ? 0.04stat? 0.10systand a cut-off energy at 15.7 ? 3.4stat? 2.5systTeV. The broken power law spectrum exhibits spectral indices of 2.02 ? 0.08stat? 0.10systand 2.63 ? 0.14stat? 0.10systwith a break energy at 2.57 ? 0.19stat? 0.44systTeV. No significant flux variation is found. Increases in the ?-ray flux of HESS J1745-290 by at least a factor of two would be required for a 3? detection of a flare with time scales of an hour. Investigation of possible QPO activity at periods claimed to be detected in X-rays does not show any periodicities in the H.E.S.S. signal.

43. The efficient low-mass Seyfert MCG?05?23?016

Abstract: Aims. The Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG?05?23?016 has been shown to exhibit a complex X-ray spectrum. This source has moderate X-ray luminosity, hosts a comparably low-mass black hole, but accretes at a high Eddington rate, and allows us to study a super massive black hole in an early stage.Methods. Three observations of the INTEGRAL satellite simultaneous with pointed Swift/XRT observations performed from December?2006 to June 2007 are used in combination with public data from the INTEGRAL archive to study the variability of the hard X-ray components and to generate a high-quality spectrum from?1 to 150?keV.Results. The AGN shows little variability in the hard X-ray spectrum, with some indication of a variation in the high-energy cut-off energy ranging from 50?keV to ?100?keV, with an electron plasma temperature in the 10?90?keV range. The reflection component is not evident and, if present, the reflected fraction can be constrained to R < 0.3 for the combined data set. Comparison to previous observations shows that the reflection component has to be variable. No variability in the UV and optical range is observed on a time scale of 1.5?years.Conclusions. The hard X-ray spectrum of MCG?05?23?016 appears to be stable with the luminosity and underlying power law varying moderately and the optical/UV flux staying constant. The reflection component and the iron K? line seem to have decreased between December?2005 and the observations presented here. The spectral energy distribution appears to be similar to that of Galactic black hole systems, e.g. XTE?1118+480 in the low state. The AGN exhibits a remarkably high Eddington ratio of $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \mathrel{>\kern-1.0em\lower0.9ex\hbox{~}}0.8$ (or $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \mathrel{>\kern-1.0em\lower0.9ex\hbox{~}}0.1$, if we consider a higher mass of the central engine) and, at the same time, a low cut-off energy around 70?keV. Objects like MCG?05?23?016 might indicate the early stages of super massive black holes, in which a strong accretion flow feeds the central engine.

Abstract: The rapidly varying (~10?min timescale) non-thermal X-ray emission observed from Sgr A*implies that particle acceleration is occuring close to the event horizon of the supermassive black hole. The TeV ?-ray source HESS?J1745-290 is coincident with Sgr?A*and may be closely related to its X-ray emission. Simultaneous X-ray and TeV observations are required to elucidate the relationship between these objects. We report on joint HESS/Chandra observations performed in July?2005, during which an X-ray flare was detected. Despite a factor of ?9 increase in the X-ray flux of Sgr?A*, no evidence is found for an increase in the TeV ?-ray flux from this region. We find that an increase in the ?-ray flux of a factor of?2 or greater can be excluded at a confidence level of?99%. This finding disfavours scenarios in which the keV and TeV emission are associated with the same population of accelerated particles and in which the bulk of the ?-ray emission is produced within ~1014?cm (~100RS) of the supermassive black hole.

Abstract: Aims. The supernova remnant (SNR) complex CTB?37 is an interesting candidate for observations with very high energy (VHE) ?-ray telescopes such as HESS. In this region, three SNRs are seen. One of them is potentially associated with several molecular clouds, a circumstance that can be used to probe the acceleration of hadronic cosmic rays.Methods. This region was observed with the HESS Cherenkov telescopes and the data were analyzed with standard HESS procedures. Recent X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton were used to search for X-ray counterparts.Results. The discovery of a new VHE ?-ray source HESS?J1714-385 coincident with the remnant CTB?37A is reported. The energy spectrum is well described by a power-law with a photon index of ? = 2.30 ? 0.13 and a differential flux at 1?TeV of ?0= (8.7 ?1.0stat?1.8sys) ?10-13cm-2?s-1?TeV-1. The integrated flux above 1?TeV is equivalent to?3% of the flux of the Crab nebula above the same energy. This VHE ?-ray source is a counterpart candidate for the unidentified EGRET source 3EG?J1714-3857. The observed VHE?emission is consistent with the molecular gas distribution around CTB?37A; a close match is expected in a hadronic scenario for ?-ray production. The X-ray observations reveal the presence of thermal X-rays from the NE part of the?SNR. In the NW?part of the remnant, an extended non-thermal X-ray source, CXOU?J171419.8-383023, is discovered as well. Possible connections of the X-ray emission to the newly found VHE?source are discussed.

Abstract: The HESS experiment, an array of four Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes with high sensitivity and large field-of-view, has been used to search for emitters of very-high-energy (VHE, >100?GeV) ?-rays along the Galactic plane, covering the region 30??< l < 60?, 280??< l < 330?, and -3??< b < 3?. In this continuation of the HESS Galactic Plane Scan, a new extended VHE ?-ray source was discovered at ?2000=19h12m49s, ?2000=+10?09?06??(HESS?J1912+101). Its integral flux between 1?10?TeV is ~10% of the Crab Nebula flux in the same energy range. The measured energy spectrum can be described by a power law dN/dE ? E-?with a photon index ?= 2.7 ?0.2stat?0.3sys. HESS?J1912+101 is plausibly associated with the high spin-down luminosity pulsar PSR?J1913+1011. We also discuss associations with an as yet unconfirmed SNR candidate proposed from low frequency radio observation and/or with molecular clouds found in 13CO data.

Abstract: Aims. The BL?Lac object RGB?J0152+017?(z=0.080) was predicted to be a very high-energy (VHE; >100?GeV) ?-ray source, due to its high X-ray and radio fluxes. Our aim is to understand the radiative processes by investigating the observed emission and its production mechanism using the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) experiment. Methods. We report recent observations of the BL?Lac source RGB?J0152+017?made in late October and November 2007 with the HESS array consisting of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Contemporaneous observations were made in X-rays by the Swift and RXTE satellites, in the optical band with the ATOM telescope, and in the radio band with the Nan?ay Radio Telescope. Results. A signal of 173 ?-ray photons corresponding to a statistical significance of 6.6? was found in the data. The energy spectrum of the source can be described by a powerlaw with a spectral index of ?=2.95?0.36stat?0.20syst. The integral flux above 300?GeV corresponds to ~2% of the flux of the Crab nebula. The source spectral energy distribution (SED) can be described using a two-component non-thermal synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model, except in the optical band, which is dominated by a thermal host galaxy component. The parameters that are found are very close to those found in similar SSC studies in TeV blazars. Conclusions. RGB?J0152+017?is discovered as a source of VHE ?-rays by HESS The location of its synchrotron peak, as derived from the SED in Swift data, allows clear classification as a high-frequency-peaked BL?Lac (HBL).

Abstract: Aims. Observations of shell-type supernova remnants (SNRs) in the GeV to multi-TeV ?-ray band, coupled with those at millimetre radio wavelengths, are motivated by the search for cosmic-ray accelerators in our Galaxy. The old-age mixed-morphology SNR W?28 (distance?~2?kpc) is a prime target due to its interaction with molecular clouds along its northeastern boundary and other clouds situated nearby.Methods. We observed the W?28 field (for ~40?h) at very high energy (VHE) ?-ray energies (E > 0.1?TeV) with the HESS. Cherenkov telescopes. A reanalysis of EGRET E > 100?MeV data was also undertaken. Results from the NANTEN?4?m telescope Galactic plane survey and other CO?observations were used to study molecular clouds. Results. We have discovered VHE ?-ray emission (HESS?J1801-233) coincident with the northeastern boundary of W?28 and a complex of sources (HESS?J1800-240A, B and C) ~0.5? south of W?28 in the Galactic disc. The EGRET source (GRO?J1801-2320) is centred on HESS?J1801-233 but may also be related to HESS?J1800-240 given the large EGRET point spread function. The VHE differential photon spectra are well fit by pure power laws with indices ? ~2.3 to 2.7. The spectral indices of HESS?J1800-240A, B, and C are consistent within statistical errors. All VHE sources are ~10?in intrinsic radius except for HESS?J1800-240C, which appears pointlike. The NANTEN 12CO(J = 1-0) data reveal molecular clouds positionally associating with the VHE emission, spanning a ~15?km?s-1range in local standard of rest velocity. Conclusions. The VHE/molecular cloud association could indicate a hadronic origin for HESS?J1801-233 and HESS?J1800-240, and several cloud components in projection may contribute to the VHE emission. The clouds have components covering a broad velocity range encompassing the distance estimates for W?28 (~2?kpc) and extending up to ~4?kpc. Assuming hadronic origin and distances of 2 and 4?kpc for cloud components, the required cosmic-ray density enhancement factors (with respect to the solar value) are in the range ~10 to ~30. If situated at 2?kpc distance, such cosmic-ray densities may be supplied by SNRs like W?28. Additionally and/or alternatively, particle acceleration may come from several catalogued SNRs and SNR candidates, the energetic ultra compact HII?region W?28A2, and the HII?regions M?8 and M?20, along with their associated open clusters. Further sub-mm observations would be recommended to probe in detail the dynamics of the molecular clouds at velocites > 10?km?s-1and their possible connection to W?28.

Abstract: Aims.The properties of the very high energy (VHE; E > 100?GeV) ?-ray emission from the high-frequency peaked BL?Lac PG?1553+113 are investigated. An attempt is made to measure the currently unknown redshift of this object.Methods.VHE?Observations of PG?1553+113 were made with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) in 2005 and 2006. H + K?(1.45-2.45??m) spectroscopy of PG?1553+113 was performed in March 2006 with SINFONI, an integral field spectrometer of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile.Results.A VHE?signal, ~10 standard deviations, is detected by HESS?during the?2?years of observations (24.8?h live time). The integral flux above 300?GeV is (4.6 ?0.6stat?0.9syst) ? 10-12cm-2?s-1, corresponding to ~3.4% of the flux from the Crab Nebula above the same threshold. The time-averaged energy spectrum is measured from 225?GeV to ~1.3 TeV, and is characterized by a very soft power law (photon index of ?= 4.5 ?0.3stat?0.1syst). No evidence for any flux or spectral variations is found on any sampled time scale within the VHE?data. The redshift of PG?1553+113 could not be determined. Indeed, even though the measured SINFONI spectrum is the most sensitive ever reported for this object at near infrared wavelengths, and the sensitivity is comparable to the best spectroscopy at other wavelengths, no absorption or emission lines were found in the H+K spectrum presented here.
