Context. This is the second paper of a series devoted to the WIde Field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey(WINGS). WINGS is a long term project which is gathering wide-field, multi-band imaging and spectroscopy of galaxies in a complete sample of 77 X-ray selected, nearby clusters (0.04 < z< 0.07) located far from the galactic plane (|b|≥20°). The main goal of this project is to establish a local reference for evolutionary studies of galaxies and galaxy clusters.

Aims. We present the results from a comprehensive spectroscopic survey of the WINGS (WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey) clusters, a program called WINGS-SPE. The WINGS-SPE sample consists of 48 clusters, 22 of which are in the southern sky and 26 in the north. The main goals of this spectroscopic survey are: (1) to study the dynamics and kinematics of the WINGS clusters and their constituent galaxies, (2) to explore the link between the spectral properties and the morphological evolution in different density environments and across a wide range of cluster X-ray luminosities and optical properties.

Context.The Fornax cluster spectroscopic survey (FCSS) is an all-object survey of a region around the Fornax cluster of galaxies undertaken using the 2dF multi-object spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian telescope. Its aim was to obtain spectra for a complete sample of all objects with $16.5 < b_j < 19.7$irrespective of their morphology (i.e. including “stars”, “galaxies” and “merged” images).

Aims.We search for and characterize substructures in the projected distribution of galaxies observed in the wide field CCD images of the 77 nearby clusters of the WIde-field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS). This sample is complete in X-ray flux in the redshift range $0.04

This is the first paper of a series that will present data and scientific results from the WINGS project, a wide-field, multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopic survey of galaxies in 77 nearby clusters. The sample was extracted from the ROSAT catalogs of X-Ray emitting clusters, with constraints on the redshift ($0.04< z<0.07$) and distance from the galactic plane (${\vert}b{\vert}\geq 20$deg).
The global goal of the WINGS project is the systematic study of the local cosmic variance of the cluster population and of the properties of cluster galaxies as a function of cluster properties and local environment. This data collection will allow the definition of a local, “zero-point” reference against which to gauge the cosmic evolution when compared to more distant clusters.
The core of the project consists of wide-field optical imaging of the selected clusters in the Band Vbands. We have also completed a multi-fiber, medium-resolution spectroscopic survey for 51 of the clusters in the master sample. The imaging and spectroscopy data were collected using, respectively, the WFC@INT and WYFFOS@WHT in the northern hemisphere, and the WFI@MPG and 2dF@AAT in the southern hemisphere. In addition, a NIR (J, K) survey of ${\sim}$50 clusters and an H$_{\alpha}+U$survey of some 10 clusters are presently ongoing with the WFCAM@UKIRT and WFC@INT, respectively, while a very-wide-field optical survey has also been programmed with OmegaCam@VST.
In this paper we briefly outline the global objectives and the main characteristics of the WINGS project. Moreover, the observing strategy and the data reduction of the optical imaging survey (WINGS-OPT) are presented. We have achieved a photometric accuracy of ${\sim}$0.025 mag, reaching completeness to $V\sim 23.5$. Field size and resolution (FWHM) span the absolute intervals (1.6–2.7) Mpc and (0.7–1.7) kpc, respectively, depending on the redshift and on the seeing. This allows the planned studies to obtain a valuable description of the local properties of clusters and galaxies in clusters.

Using multi-object fiber-fed spectrographs, we observed our sample of WINGS cluster galaxies at an intermediate resolution of 6?9???and, using a cross-correlation technique, we measured redshifts with a mean accuracy of ~45?km?s-1.Results. We present redshift measurements for 6137?galaxies and their first analyses. Details of the spectroscopic observations are reported. The WINGS-SPE has ~30% overlap with previously published data sets, allowing us both to perform a complete comparison with the literature and to extend the catalogs.Conclusions. Using our redshifts, we calculate the velocity dispersion for all the clusters in the WINGS-SPE sample. We almost triple the number of member galaxies known in each cluster with respect to previous works. We also investigate the X-ray luminosity vs. velocity dispersion relation for our WINGS-SPE clusters, and find it to be consistent with the form Lx??v4.

We study the color − magnitude red sequence and blue fraction of 72 X-ray selected galaxy clusters at z= 0.04−0.07 from the WINGS survey, searching for correlations between the characteristics of the red sequence (RS) and the environment. We consider the slope and scatter of the red sequence, the number ratio of red luminous-to-faint galaxies, the blue fraction, and the fractions of ellipticals, S0s, and spirals that compose the RS. None of these quantities correlate with the cluster velocity dispersion, X-ray luminosity, number of cluster substructures, BCG prevalence over next brightest galaxies, and the spatial concentration of ellipticals. The properties of the RS, instead, depend strongly on local galaxy density. Higher density regions have a smaller RS scatter, a higher luminous-to-faint ratio, a lower blue fraction, and a lower spiral fraction on the RS. Our results clearly illustrate the prominent effect of the local density in setting the epoch when galaxies become passive and join the red sequence, as opposed to the mass of the galaxy host structure.

Context.The WIde-field Nearby Galaxy clusters Survey (wings) is a project whose primary goal is to study the galaxy populations in clusters in the local universe (z< 0.07) and of the influence of environment on their stellar populations. This survey has provided the astronomical community with a high quality set of photometric and spectroscopic data for 77 and 48 nearby galaxy clusters, respectively.
