The article presents a discussion related to decision making in the U.S. universities and colleges. As can be true of any organization, the accident of history frequently determines the precise structure and alignments of the departments composing a university. In some cases such an accident, along with the efforts of the individuals who have worked within the structure, will place a particular department in a highly advantageous position. In other cases, the accident of history and decisions made during the development of a department will create problems for current faculty members as they attempt to represent their discipline and position their department and themselves for the future. But, whether a department enjoys an advantageous position or is experiencing problems, periodic self-evaluation is appropriate. Fundamental to the discussion that should occur is examination of the issue of the configuration of the department itself. The discussion should involve critical analysis of the scope of the discipline the department assumes as its purview, the structure established to fulfill the department's mission, and the commitment of available resources.
