Abstract Despite the ecological significance of ants and the intensive research attention they have received, thorough treatments of the anatomy and functional morphology are still scarce. In this study we document the head morphology of workers of the myrmicine Wasmannia affinis with optical microscopy, μ-computed tomography, scanning electron microscopy, and 3D reconstruction, providing the first complete anatomical treatment of an ant head with a broad array of modern techniques. We discuss the potential of the applied methods to generate detailed and well-documented morphological data sets with increased efficiency. We also address homology problems, particularly in the context of the cephalic digestive tract. According to our analyses the "pharynx" of previous ant studies is homologous to the prepharynx of other insects. We also discuss the phylogenetic potential and functional significance of the observed characters, with internal features such as tentorium and musculature discussed for the first time. Our investigation underlines that detailed anatomical data for Formicidae are still very fragmentary, which in turn limits our understanding of the major design elements underlying the ant bauplan. We attempt to provide a template for further anatomical studies, which will help to understand the evolution of this fascinating group on the phenotypic level. We studied the tracheal system of exemplar species representing three families of Solifugae Sundevall, 1833, i.e., Galeodes granti Pocock, 1903, Ammotrechula wasbaueri Muma, 1962 and Eremobates sp., using μCT-imaging and 3D-reconstruction. This is the first comparative study of the tracheal system of Solifugae in 85 years and the first using high-resolution nondestructive methods. The tracheal system was found to be structurally similar in all three species, with broad major tracheae predominantly in the prosoma as well as anastomoses (i.e., connections between tracheal branches from different stigmata) in the prosoma and opisthosoma. Differences among the three species were observed in the presence or absence of cheliceral air sacs, the number of tracheae supplying the heart, and the ramification of major tracheae in the opisthosoma. The structure of the tracheal system with its extensive branches and some anastomoses is assumed to aid rapid and efficient gas exchange in the respiratory tissues of these active predators. The large diameter of cheliceral tracheae (air sacs) of taxa with disproportionally heavier chelicerae suggests a role in weight reduction, enabling solifuges to reach greater speeds during predation. The air sacs may also permit more rapid and efficient gaseous exchange, necessary to operate the musculature of these structures, thereby improving their use for predation in an environment where prey is scarce. The superfamily Austrochiloidea (Austrochilidae and Gradungulidae) take a pivotal position in araneomorph spider phylogeny. In this discussion crevice weaver spiders (Filistatidae) are of equal interest. Especially data from these phylogenetically uncertain yet basal off branching groups can enlighten our understanding on the evolution of organ systems. In the course of a survey on the evolutionary morphology of the circulatory system in spiders we therefore investigated the hemolymph vascular system in two austrochiloid and one filistatid species. Additionally some data on a hypochilid and a gradungulid species are included. Using up-to-date morphological methods, the vascular systems in these spiders are visualized three dimensionally. Ground pattern features of the circulatory systems in austrochiloid spiders are presented and the data discussed along recent lines of phylogenetic hypotheses. Special topics highlighted are the intraspecific variability of the origins of some prosomal arteries and the evolutionary correlation of respiratory and circulatory systems in spiders. Abstract: External morphological features of Cephalocarida have long been interpreted as plesiomorphic with regard to those of other crustaceans. Based on transmission electron microscopy and light microscopy, however, the brain in the cephalocarid Hutchinsoniella macracantha has been shown to contain a number of structures that are more difficult to interpret in an evolutionary context. These include the multi-lobed complex, a unique cluster of neuropils associated with the olfactory lobes. To establish a well-founded comparison of phylogenetically relevant, neuroanatomical data from Cephalocarida to other arthropods, we investigated the brain in H. macracantha using immunolabeling (acetylated α-tubulin, serotonin, RFamide, histamine) and nuclear counter stains of whole mounts and vibratome sections analyzing specimens with confocal laser scanning microscopy and computer-aided 3D-reconstruction. Other 3D-reconstructions were based on serial 1 μm semi-thin sections. The multi-lobed complex features a pedunculus and shows detailed homologies with the mushroom bodies of certain Insecta and Lithobiomorpha (Chilopoda), suggesting that the hemiellipsoid bodies in Remipedia and Malacostraca have derived from a cephalocarid-like pattern. Like the corresponding tracts in Insecta, the olfactory globular tracts linking the multi-lobed complex to the olfactory lobes are ipsilateral, probably constituting the plesiomorphic pattern from which the decussating tracts in Remipedia and Malacostraca have evolved. The olfactory lobes in H. macracantha are uniquely organized into vertical stacks of olfactory glomeruli whose exact shape could not be identified. Similarly to Malacostraca and Insecta, the olfactory glomeruli in H. macracantha are innervated by serotonin-like, RFamide-like, and histamine-like immunoreactive interneurons. This suggests homology of the olfactory lobes across Tetraconata, despite the different morphological organization. Although H. macracantha lacks elongated, unpaired midline neuropils known from the protocerebrum of other Arthropoda, the possible rudiment of a central-body-like neuropil that receives decussating fibers from anterior somata was revealed by the serotonin-like immunoreactive pattern. Abstract: Descriptions of the skeletomuscular system of the symphylan head are characterized by a high number of incongruencies among authors. The increased accuracy and transparency of 3D-reconstruction methods allows for an allocation of some of the incongruencies to (i) misinterpretations of literature descriptions, or (ii) different views of what constitutes a separate muscle. Abstract: Females of a solitary digger wasp, the European beewolf (Philanthus triangulum F.), cultivate symbiotic bacteria of the genus Streptomyces in specialized antennal glands. The streptomycetes are secreted in the subterranean brood cells and protect the offspring against mould fungi. We reconstructed the complex morphology of the antennal glands using 3D-visualization software, investigated the ultrastructure of the glands, and examine the role of the antennal glands as organs for the cultivation of the symbiotic bacteria. The bacteria are cultivated in five antennomeres within large reservoirs that consist of two slightly bent lobes. Each gland reservoir is bordered by a monolayered epithelium lined with a partially reinforced cuticle and when completely filled with bacteria it comprises about half of the antennomere''s volume. The opening of the reservoir is covered by gelatinous appendage of the cuticle. The cells of the monolayered epithelium bordering each reservoir show basal invaginations, apical microvilli and numerous vesicles. Each reservoir is surrounded by approximately 400 class 3 gland units that are connected to the reservoir lumen through conducting canals. The class 3 gland cells contain numerous vesicles and a high density of rough endoplasmatic reticulum. In the reservoir lumen, large numbers of symbiotic Streptomyces bacteria are embedded in secretion droplets. Thus, the bacteria are apparently provided with large amounts of nutrients via the gland epithelium and the class 3 gland cell units. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The thoracic morphology of the troglobiontic leiodid species Troglocharinus ferreri (Cholevinae, Leptodirini) is described and documented in detail. The features are mainly discussed with respect to modifications linked with subterranean habits. Troglocharinus is assigned to the moderately modified pholeuonoid morphotype. The body is elongated and slender compared to epigean leiodids and also cave-dwelling species of Ptomaphagini. The legs are elongated, especially the hindlegs, though to a lesser degree than in the most advanced troglobiontic species. The prothorax is moderately elongated but otherwise largely unmodified. Its muscular system is strongly developed, with more muscle bundles that in free-living staphylinoid or hydrophiloid species. The pterothorax is greatly modified, especially the metathoracic flight apparatus. The meso- and metathoracic elements of the elytral locking device are well-developed, whereas the other notal parts are largely reduced. The mesonotum is simplified, with the triangular scutellar shield as the only distinctly developed part. The mesothoracic musculature is strongly reduced, with only 6 muscles compared to 12 or 13 in free-living staphylinoid or hydrophiloid species. The metanotum is greatly reduced, without a recognizable subdivision into prescutum scutum and scutellum. It is strongly narrowing laterally and lacks notal wing processes and other wing-related elements, but well-developed alacristae are present. The wings are reduced to small membranous flap-like structures inserted at the posterior end of the metanotum. A metapostnotum is not developed. Like in the case of the head, cave dwelling species of the related Ptomaphagini and Leptodirini show different trends of adaptations, with a compact ovoid or navicular body shape in the former, and a distinct trend towards elongation of the body and appendages in the latter tribe. Structural affinities of the thoraces of T. ferreri and the troglobiontic trechine carabid Sinaphaenops wangorum are mainly due to the reduced flight apparatus. The degree of muscle reduction in the pterothorax is very similar in both species. • The thoracic morphology of cave-dwelling leiodid beetle Troglocharinus ferreri was studied in detail. • The prothorax is largely unmodified and the pterothorax is greatly affected especially the metathoracic flight apparatus. • The muscular system is strongly developed in the prothorax while greatly reduced in the pterothorax.
