This report describes a case of esophageal wall thickening with stenosis and secondary megaesophagus in a 30 months old horse. The animal had appetite loss, dysphagia, and persistent fetid nasal discharge. Endoscopic examination revealed stenosis of the aboral portion of the esophagus, close the cardia, associated to oesophageal segment ectasia. Necropsy revealed, in addition to the afore mentioned alterations, pronounced wall thickening of the distal end of the esophagus. Non digested food was also observed in the lumen of the traquea and primary bronchi associated with gangrenous pneumonia. Microscopic examination of esophageal fragments stained by HE and Masson trichrome revealed marked hypertrophy of the muscular layer. From the foregoing, it appears that the muscular hypertrophy of the esophagus may determine the onset of sudden and severe clinical manifestations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
