Mixed human salivary secretion has been fractionated into twelve components, at a rate of 5 ml/hr, by a specially constructed continuous-flow paper electrophoresis apparatus. Optimal resolution has been obtained with borate buffer pH 9·0, S & S 470A chromatographic paper, electrolyte flow rate 120 ml/hr, and an electrical field of 30 V/cm. Under the employed experimental conditions a “steady state” of the system can be maintained for long and uninterrupted periods of operation, making this method suitable for preparative fractionation of components of the human salivary secretion.
