Objectives:The aim of this study was to define knowledge and attitudes toward epilepsy among students of health occupations in a university.Methods:This descriptive study was conducted with a total of 544 university students from different health professions (medicine, nursing, dentistry, physiotherapy, and midwifery). To select the sample of the study, stratified sampling method was used. In this study, Epilepsy Attitude Scale and Epilepsy Knowledge Assessment Form were used.Results:Among the 544 participants, 59.6% were female and the mean age was 21.7 years. While the majority of the sample recognized a generalized tonic-clonic seizure, they did not know about other seizure types. The mean score of the Attitude Scale was 60.2±6.4 (range: 30–70). The attitudes were not different between males and females (p=0.732). The students who had a family member with epilepsy (p=0.004) or witnessed a seizure (p=0.05) and attended upper classes had a more positive attitude (p=0.004).Conclusion:Although the sample of this study which consisted of students from health occupations had moderate to good attitude toward epilepsy; they still have a lack of knowledge in particular areas. Each faculty needs to re-arrange their curriculum to fill this knowledge gap.

Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) is an unprovoked and spontaneous sensation of persistent genital arousal that cannot be relieved with one or several orgasms. At present, little is known about the etiology of this condition. We describe the case of a 37-year-old single woman with typical PGAD symptoms. She was followed up for drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy for 17 years until right hippocampectomy due to right mesial temporal sclerosis. Seven years after the surgery, she developed obsessive compulsive symptoms and excessive sexual behavior. These persistent feelings of sexual excitation were not characteristic of her preoperative epileptic seizures. No epileptic abnormality was seen in her last EEG, and she did not experience seizures after the surgery. She was still on 900 mg/day oxcarbazepine. Her symptoms were completely resolved with psychotherapy as well as 2 mg/day risperidon and 30 mg/day paroxetine treatment. Our aim was to discuss and draw attention to the rare condition of PGAD, which developed seven years after epilepsy surgery in our case. Successful treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach and consideration of all reversible causes as well as cognitive therapy.

Objectives:Autism causes deviations in communication, social, cognitive, and behavioral development. Retrospective analysis of EEG findings in children with autism and attention deficit evaluated in a child psychiatric clinic between 2011 and 2012 was performed in the present study.Methods:Of the 20 subjects included, 14 were male (80%), and 4 were female (20%), all between the ages of 3 and 19 years.Results:No sign of epilepsy was present in patient histories. EEG findings were normal in 8 patients (40%), of whom all were male with a mean age of 6±3.7 years. Epileptiform activity or mild, diffuse slowing was present in the EEGs of 12 patients with a mean age of 12±3.3 years. Focal epileptiform activity was found in 7 cases (58.7%), and generalized epileptiform discharges were found in 1 (8.3%). Mild, diffuse slowing was found in 4 (33%) patients.Conclusion:It has been reported that autism and attention deficit patients have different rates of EEG abnormality and epilepsy. In the present study, epileptiform abnormality was present in 40% of patients. It is remarkable that repeated and sleep EEGs can improve the ability to determine this abnormality rate. It is important to highlight these differences in order to increase the prognostic value of the EEG and its contribution to physiopathology in child psychiatry patients.
