In a pot experiment the influence of water (insufficient: 1 mm d-1 by watering; sufficient: capillary raising water from 35 cm soil depth) and nutrient supply (NPK-fertilisation broadcast or stripe fertilisation to the sod seeded row) onto the juvenile development of the sod seeded grass Festuca pratensis Huds. was investigated. With insufficient water supply the number of sod seeded plants at the end of the experimental periods was 50% as well as 0% of that of the well watered treatments. Obviously, the stripe fertilisation does not result in an improved nutrient supply and establishment. The results indicate a more complicate establishment with increasing amounts of Elymus repens L. The effects of insufficient light supply can be excluded. The restricted establishment of the so seeded grasses seems to be caused by effects in the rooting zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
