Abstract

Hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (Nase) activities accumulated in cells infected with different myxoviruses respond to the treatment of cells with cycloheximide in different ways. In chick embryo cells infected with a mesogenic NDV strain (Beaudette) both activities undergo a sharp decrease, whereas after infection with a velogenic strain no decrease is registered. Orthomyxovirus Nase activity in chick embryo cells does not decrease under the action of cycloheximide. HA activity decreases in cells infected with WSN and R5/I-influenza virus strains but not in fowl plague virus infected cells. A possible relationship between the degree of HA and Nase stability as functional entities and the cleavage of myxovirus glycoproteins is discussed.

Abstract

In homogenates of chick embryo cells infected with Newcastle disease virus (NDV) both the neuraminidase (Nase) and hemagglutinin (HA) activities were associated with subcellular particulate fractions and absent from cell sap. In homogenates of cells infected with fowl plague virus (FPV) the HA activity was also in particulate fractions but about 20% of Nase activity was in cell sap. The treatment of homogenates with Triton-X 100 increased the total Nase and HA activities and redistributed the activities so that most appeared in cell sap fractions.
