Based on a sample of coals collected from a series of stratified floors covered with cultural deposits from the preceramic Cruz Verde site (between 4000 and 3800 years B.C.) in the Chicama valley, an anthracological study was carried out, the results of which allowed the identification of four wild species of timber trees: Prosopis sp. "carob", Acacia sp. 'hawthorn', Salix sp. 'willow' and Schinus molle 'molle'; two wild shrubs: Tessaria integrifolia 'pájaro bobo' and Capparis sp. 'sapote'. The stratigraphic location of these coals is related to combustion and the biogeographical characteristics indicate that they are species that delineate a premontane desert paleoecology similar to the current one in the lower Chicama valley. Finally, obtaining botanical identification data combined with the rest of the botanical evidence studied has been important to analyze the paleoecology and to understand the use activities within the social complexity of Cruz Verde.
