Introduction: Assistive technology is aimed at improving the quality of nursing care for patients admitted to oncology intensive care units (ICUs). Objective: To develop a nursing admission form for patients admitted to an oncology intensive care unit. Materials and methods: This is a methodological study conducted in three stages: 1) an integrative literature review to compose the content of the research form, 2) content validation, which included the participation and approval of 15 specialists (nurses) using Pasquali's concordance validation method, and 3) presentation of the final version of the form. Results: A total of 20 articles were included in the review; the first version of the form was structured based on the thematic synthesis; 15 specialists participated in content validation and, after completion of the instrument, it was found that all the items had a content validation index = 0.85; based on the suggestions, the admission form was organized into blocks of items: identification, brief history, admission conditions, and physical examination, with a total of four items. Conclusions: The nursing survey form for patients admitted to oncology ICUs is suitable for use by the nursing team at the time of patient admission, enabling data recording to support the planning and systematization of care in the oncology ICU setting. Objective: To describe the support received by the second victim in falls suffered by hospitalized adult patients from the nursing team's perspective. Materials and Methods: This is an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative approach, conducted in a large general hospital in the southern region of Brazil. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with 21 nursing professionals (seven nurses and fourteen nursing technicians) selected by random sampling, who worked in the inpatient units where falls occurred with a level of harm ranging from moderate to severe during March and May of 2020. The data were submitted to content analysis from July to August of the same year. Results: On the one hand, from the nursing team's perspective, support for the second victim was considered incipient by the hospital institution. On the other, participants highlighted the support received by their families and peers in the work environment. The study followed the guidelines of the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ). Objectives: To map and examine the scientific evidence concerning the effects of cancer treatment on the comfort of children and adolescents with cancer. Materials and Methods: This scoping review was carried out in the following electronic information resources: BVS, PubMed, Cinahl, SciVerse Scopus, Lilacs, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Two independent reviewers analyzed the studies' relevance. Results: The search yielded 4,295 publications, of which 20 comprised the final sample. Following evidence mapping, the effects (20; 100 %) on comfort were found, and the most prevalent were pain (12; 60 %), fear (9; 45 %), nausea (5; 25 %), difficulty eating (4; 20 %), and distress (4; 20 %). Regarding the oncologic treatment modality, antineoplastic therapy prevailed in 11 (55 %) of the selected articles. Conclusions: Cancer treatment affects the comfort of children and adolescents with cancer, causing suffering and changing their well-being. It indicates the need to evaluate its impact and take nursing care measures to reduce complications and improve these patients' adaptation to treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The present study aims to determine Patient Safety in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 compared to non-COVID-19 ones and find predisposing factors of nursing errors according to nurses' perceptions. Methods: This descriptive-comparative research employed data from 800 nurses in eight Iranian hospitals in 2021 using three researcher-made questionnaires of sociodemographic, patient safety indicators, and predisposing factors of nursing errors, with high reliability and validity. The collected data were analyzed using ANOVA, independent t-test, and the SPSS22 software. Results: The mean patient safety scores in patients with and without COVID-19 were 3.42 ± 0.17 and 3.74 ± 0.06, respectively. The highest differences in patient safety were attributed to infection control (0.66) and patient fall (0.56) dimensions. The most common causes of nursing errors were related to management (2.67 ± 1.39), and the most common predisposing factors of nursing errors were high workload, low ratio of nurses to patients, and fatigue. Conclusions: COVID-19 patients have lower safety than non-COVID ones. Also, improper management and high workload lead to nursing errors. Therefore, the authorities must devise appropriate strategies to reduce the nurses' workload and improve patient safety, especially in COVID-19 patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To identify nursing interventions, their characteristics, and outcomes for promoting self-care in candidates for a bowel elimination ostomy. Materials and methods: A scoping review was carried out based on the Joanna Briggs Institute's recommendations. For this, studies published in Portuguese, English, and Spanish on the Web of Science, CINAHL, and Scopus databases and without a time limit were selected on November 9, 2020. Results: Of 2248 articles identified, 41 were included in this review. We identified 20 nursing interventions associated with the self-care of patients with an ostomy; most of them have gaps in their content, method, and frequency or dosing. More than 30 indicators were identified to assess the impact of nursing interventions; however, most of them were indirect assessments. Conclusion: There is scarce evidence regarding the different aspects that must be involved in nursing interventions for patients with a stoma. Moreover, there is no standardization in methods, frequency, or dosing of intervention. It is urgent to define the content, method, and frequency of nursing interventions necessary to promote self-care in patients with a bowel elimination ostomy and to use assessment tools that directly measure stoma self-care competence. Nursing theory has evolved since the 1960s, from conceptual models to concept analysis to mid-range theories. Mid-range theories are developed primarily for qualitative research, to target patient problems, to respond to patient needs, to identify interventions and the changing patterns of patient care. These mid-range theories cluster in various patterns to provide valid, coherent, and significant interventions. Examples of programs that have dramatically impacted our understanding of nursing and patient care are presented. The author assumes that practice became prominent in nursing theory in the first two decades of the 21st century. The end of the last century saw a burgeoning of literature on what is known as grand theories, their implementation, and evaluation. The era of healthcare quality research began when the Institute of Medicine issued a report on building a safer health system. At this time, the 21st-century literature in nursing took a distinct turn toward practice, influencing nursing theory. The movement to individualize care acted to further this influence. The nurse and patient relationship is the source of data for knowledge development. Established research approaches such as grounded theory and new approaches such as story theory were being used to create nursing theory from practice. Grand theory work moved to the development of instruments to measure the effects of theory in practice, such as that of Watson and Roy. The middle-range theories were developed and seen as closer to and easier to use in practice. The evidence- based practice movement also contributed to the role of theory in practice. This paper aims to consider the responsibilities of doctoral nurses to lead changes in practice through a very personal reflection of over 52 years in nursing. The reflective learning moves from an early training experience where I learned to 'do' to becoming a nursing professor with a doctoral qualification and an 'evidence-based doer.' The change witnessed has been considerable. As the highest educated professional, I have learned that doctoral nurses are responsible for leading and directly influencing clinical practice, either as a practitioner, an educator, or a researcher. They are capable of encouraging the development of critical thinking skills and helping practitioners to be curious, take risks with ideas, identify gaps in the evidence base, and be creative in their problem-solving. If the strategic vision for nurses globally is to provide the best quality of patient care, then evidence-based practice is key to leading from the head, hand, and heart. Doctoral nurses understand the patient benefits of a high staff-to-patient ratio and having a critical mass of university qualified nurses and must strive to influence policy to this effect. As each country, particularly in Latin America, develops a critical mass of doctorally qualified nurses, then they can harness their innovation, create new ways of working, attract them back into practice, and strengthen their political voice to lead strategic change. Doctoral nurses must develop their leadership skills and their confidence to lead. They have a responsibility to realise their potential and identify the opportunities to really make a difference. Objective: Identify nursing care performed by nurses to evaluate, prevent, and treat cutaneous xerosis in the elderly. Materials and Methods: Descriptive study with quantitative approach, conducted with 101 care nurses working in the medical clinic and in the intensive care units of four hospitals in Paraíba, Brazil. The data collection took place between July and September 2018 through an instrument composed of sociodemographic variables and by items related with nursing care. The statistical analysis was performed by distribution and frequency calculations, central tendency measures, standard deviation, and chi-squared test for categorical variables. Results: The majority stated always considering the age range (84.2%), assessing skin color (83.2%), evaluating skin turgor and elasticity (64.4%), looking for the existence of skin fissures (53.5%), and noticing the existence of lesions on the skin (90.1%). Of the participating professionals, 83.2% reported never having used imported equipment to evaluate skin hydration. Conclusions: The study showed that nurses emphasized the importance of considering age range, assessing skin color, being aware of areas with hyperemia, and noticing the existence of lesions, as well as the need for continuing education to improve the quality of care.
