Quadrupolar plasmon resonances that originate from interparticle near-field coupling interaction were observed in arrays composed of small-sized Ag nanoparticles (∼30 nm). The arrays were prepared by a dewetting process, during which hexagonally arranged aluminum pits were used to induce and confine the nucleation and growth of Ag nanoparticles. With the increase in the thickness of the initial Ag film, the particle size increases, and the interparticle spacing decreases to sub-10 nm scale, making adjacent particles strongly coupled. As a result, the quadrupolar resonance mode occurs, and its wavelength remains practically unchanged, while the dipolar mode shifts toward to a longer wavelength by about 80 nm. In comparison, only a dipolar resonance mode was observed in the non-coupled array that has a large interparticle spacing. The coupled array was demonstrated to exhibit much stronger surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity than that of the non-coupled array, suggesting that the quadrupolar mode can also be viewed as an indication of strong SERS enhancement in arrays composed of small-sized metal nanoparticles. The superhydrophobicity of biological surfaces with dual-scale roughness has recently received considerable attention because of the unique wettability of such surfaces. Based on this, artificial micro/nano hierarchical structures with structured sidewalls and smooth sidewalls were designed and the influences of sidewall configurations (i.e., structured and smooth) on the wetting state of micro/nano hierarchical structures were systematically investigated based on thermodynamics and the principle of minimum free energy. Wetting transition and superhydrophobic stability were then analyzed for a droplet on dual-scale rough surfaces with structured and smooth sidewalls. Theoretical analysis results show that dual-scale rough surfaces with structured sidewalls have a larger “stable superhydrophobic region” than those with smooth sidewalls. The dual-scale rough surfaces with smooth sidewalls can enlarge the apparent contact angle (ACA) without improvement in the superhydrophobic stability. By contrast, dual-scale rough surfaces with structured sidewalls present an advantage over those with smooth sidewalls in terms of enlarging ACA and enhancing superhydrophobic stability. The proposed thermodynamic model is valid when compared with previous experimental data and numerical analysis results, which is helpful for designing and understanding the wetting states and superhydrophobic stability of surfaces with dual-scale roughness. Transparent, flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates were fabricated by metalization of structured polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sheets. The resultant Ag-coated structured PET SERS substrates were revealed to be highly sensitive with good reproducibility and stability, an enhancement factor of 3 × 10 6 was acquired, which can be attributed mainly to the presence of plentiful multiple-type hot spots within the quasi-three-dimensional surface of the structured PET obtained by oxygen plasma etching. In addition, detections of model molecules on fruit skin were also carried out, demonstrating the great potential of the Ag-coated structured PET in in-situ detection of analyte on irregular objects. Importantly, the technique used for the preparation of such substrate is completely compatible with well-established silicon device technologies, and large-area fabrication with low cost can be readily realized. Wafer-scale three-dimensional (3D) surface enhancement Raman scattering (SERS) substrates were prepared using the plasma etching and ion sputtering methods that are completely compatible with well-established silicon device technologies. The substrates are highly sensitive with excellent uniformity and reproducibility, exhibiting an enhancement factor up to 10 12 with a very low relative standard deviation (RSD) around 5%. These are attributed mainly to the uniform-distributed, multiple-type high-density hot spots originating from the structural characteristics of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) decorated Si nanocone (NC) arrays. We demonstrate that the trace dimethyl phthalate (DMP) at a concentration of 10 −7 M can be well detected using this SERS substrate, showing that the AgNPs-decorated SiNC arrays can serve as efficient SERS substrates for phthalate acid esters (PAEs) detection with high sensitivity. • Carbon-coated SnS nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide composites are designed and synthesized. • Dual-carbon modification enhances the rate performance of SnS. • Potassiation stage adjustment results in stable cycling performance. Potassium ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted lots of attention due to its abundant resources. Exploring capable anode materials becomes one of the critical issues to achieve high-performance PIBs. Herein, carbon-coated SnS nanosheets and reduced graphene oxide (SnS@C/rGO) composite are designed and synthesized by a solvothermal reaction and heat treatment. The strategy of double carbon modification enhances the rate performance of SnS. Meanwhile, the cycling stability of SnS@C/rGO can be further improved by optimizing the voltage window, which can achieve the potassiation stage adjustment. K ions storage mechanism of SnS@C/rGO is investigated under different voltage windows. The deep alloying reaction occurs under low potential and is harmful to cycling performance. Moreover, the electrochemical kinetics of K ions storage is investigated by quantitative kinetics analysis. The electrical conductivity and kinetics of ion diffusion/transport are greatly enhanced due to the vulcanization, NC coating and introduction of MXene. As a consequence, the composite exhibits high discharge capacity of 464 mAh/g at a current density of 0.1 A/g and still maintains a capacity of 202 mAh/g at a high current density of 5 A/g when used as the anode material for sodium-ion batteries. The micron-size anisotropic growth of electroless nickel‑phosphorus plating was realized on the fine sliver lines with the width of ≤15 μm. Growth of nickel‑phosphorus alloy occurred preferentially in the width direction at a growth rate approximately twice than that in the thickness direction during electroless plating in a bath with periodical positive and negative rotation. The growth rate in the width direction reaches 15–18 μm in 30 min. The dominant nickel‑phosphorus growth in the width direction is attributed to the enhancement of mass transfer rate for solution at the edge of silver lines or nickel‑phosphorus layer, as a result of the better wettability of ceramic than Pd-activated silver and nickel‑phosphorus layer. The suppression of lead acetate at the layer edge is enhanced by nonlinear diffusion instead of wettability difference. A possible mechanism for the formation of nickel‑phosphorus layer morphology as functions of mass transfer and lead distribution was proposed to explain the growth behavior of anisotropic electroless nickel‑phosphorus plating. Furthermore, this anisotropic electroless nickel‑phosphorus plating process was employed to form a novel L-shape terminal electrode structure of chip inductor. Herein, we carry out an interfacial engineering strategy to design and synthesize carbon-coated MoS 2 hierarchical microspheres (MoS 2 @C) for PIBs. The uniform carbon coating layer maintains the structural integrity and the heterointerfaces in MoS 2 @C provide an electron transport highway. As a consequence, at 100 mA g-1, for the MoS 2 @C hierarchical microspheres, a remarkable capacity of 332 mAh g-1 can be obtained, with a remarkable cycling ability. Moreover, at 1000 mA g-1, MoS 2 @C can still provide the capacity of 124 mAh g-1 over 700 cycles. The kinetics analysis and ex-situ characterization demonstrated the fast and reversible K ions storage behavior of MoS 2 @C. In this work, we design a three-dimensional (3D) strongly-coupled polyaniline/crosslinked carbon nanosheets (PANI/CCNs) composite using a facile in-situ chemical polymerization method. The PANI is uniformly and conformally covered on the thin graphene-like biomass-derived CCNs. The interconnected CCNs with high surface area and electrical conductivity can expose more active sites of PANI and enhance the interfacial electron transfer, which contributes to the improvement of specific capacitance and rate performance. The sheets-like PANI can introduce pseudocapacitance through the surface redox reactions on the surface. As a result, the PANI/CCNs composite electrode can reach high specific capacitance of 444 and 340 F g−1 at current densities of 0.1 and 5 A g−1, respectively. The assembled PANI/CCNs//PANI/CCNs symmetric supercapacitor can reach a high specific capacitance of 72.0 F g−1 at a current density of 0.1 A g−1. Moreover, the PANI/CCNs//PANI/CCNs symmetric cell exhibits a high energy density of 28.9 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 85.1 W kg−1, which is competitive in the aqueous PANI-based symmetric supercapacitors. • The willow catkin was adopted as the low-cost carbon source for the preparation of crosslinked carbon nanosheets. • The π–π stacking of PANI chains on the CCNs and the proton transfer from PANI to CCNs introduce abundant active sites. • The assembled symmetric supercapacitor delivers a high energy density of 28.9 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 85.1 W kg-1. Catalytic performance and NaBH 4 utilization are two crucial concerns in the electrooxidation of NaBH 4. To improve the inherent properties of regular performance and low fuel utilization of the transition metal Co and Ni, an efficient anode catalyst of ultra-thin CoNi nanosheets modified novel 3D self-supported reduced graphene oxide foam is prepared in this work. The alkaline condition borohydride oxidation reaction on the prepared catalyst is investigated in a typical three-electrode system. The prepared catalyst shows a high performance due to the large electrochemical active surface area, low activation energy (8.29 kJ·mol−1), and the small electrochemical impedance it embraced. Linear scan voltammetry recorded in a low concentration of NaBH 4 suggests that borohydride oxidation is a first-order reaction on the prepared catalyst. Based on the unique structure of the catalyst, which is useful to capture the hydrogen and perform further oxidation of hydrogen, higher utilization of NaBH 4 achieved on the catalyst. Besides, the prepared anode catalyst applied to a direct borohydride-hydrogen peroxide fuel cell (DBHPFC). The results of polarization curve and power density curves, as well as stability research, all indicate that the as-prepared catalyst is a highly efficient anode material for application in DBHPFC. Binary transition metal sulfides are considered to be promising electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors because of their ultrahigh electron conductivity and superior electrochemical activity compared to the unitary transition metal sulfides. In this work, copper cobalt sulfides nanowire arrays on nickel foam with different element ratios and porosities are prepared by using a two-step hydrothermal method, and their electrochemical performance is explored. Benefited from the high electrical conductivity, rich active sites and optimized microstructure, the optimized copper cobalt sulfides (CuCo 2 S 4) electrode can achieve a ultrahigh specific capacitance of 2446.6 F·g−1 at 1 A·g−1 and favorable rate performance. The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with the CuCo 2 S 4 nanowire array and activated carbon (AC) electrodes displays a high energy density of 33.4 Wh·kg−1 at a power density of 751.5 W·kg−1 can be obtained. Abstract In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon framework (CF) is prepared using commercial sponge as template and furfuryl alcohol (C 5 H 6 O 2) as carbon source, through polymerizing and solidifying by oxalic acid (H 2 C 2 O 4) followed by a carbonizing process at high temperature. Then, one-demensional (1D) polyaniline (PANI) nanowires are deposited on the CF substrate by a simple one-step electrodeposition method to obtain CF-PANI energy storage electrode. The CF-PANI maintains initial 3D porous structure as CF substrate with PANI layer, benefiting for the diffusion of electrolyte and the contact between active material and electrolyte. Besides, the carbon skeleton is surrounded by the PANI nanowires, which provide more transfer channels for electrons during the charge/discharge process. The loading mass of PANI on CF is as high as 21.3 mg cm−3, and the gravimetric and volumetric capacitances reach 866 F g−1 and 18.5 F cm−3, respectively, at the scan rate of 2 mV s−1. Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor based on CF-PANI as anode electrode and CF as cathode electrode exhibits a high energy density of 44 W h kg−1 at the power density of 800 W kg−1, indicating its promising applications as the electrode material for supercapacitors. Abstract Transition metal selenide has stimulated much research interest in energy storage and conversion, due to its excellent electrical conductivity. β-Cu 2 Se with special crystal structure is considered as super-ionic conductor, of which the diffusion coefficient is as large as a liquid. The fast ions and electrons conductor β-Cu 2 Se with uniformly dense nanowire crossing with each other directly on nickel foam is prepared via simple one-step solvothermal grow method for 4 h, avoiding conductive agent and binder. The feature much benefitting for electrons and ions transfer enable the β-Cu 2 Se-4h electrode delivers specific capacity as high as 182.4 mA h g−1 at current density of 2 mA cm−2, which is still 105.6 mA h g−1 even at high current density of 50 mA cm−2, and excellent cycling stability of 85% after repetitively charge-discharge 10,000 times. A simple hydrothermal route is designed to decorate NiCo 2 S 4 nanoparticles on the surface of N-doped carbon nanotubes to form a coaxial composite (NiCo 2 S 4 @NCNT). Inherited the high electrical conductivity from the NCNT and high capacitive performance of NiCo 2 S 4 , the optimized NiCo 2 S 4 @NCNT composite could significantly reduce the contact resistance and effectively increase the transfer rate of ion and electron and thus benefit for its electrochemical performance enhancement. When employed as a battery-type supercapacitor electrode, the NiCo 2 S 4 @NCNT composite exhibits a high capacitance up to 783.5 C g −1 at 1 A g −1 and as well as rate performance (74.6% retention with the current density increases from 1 to 50 A g −1 ). Coupled with activated carbon (AC) negative electrode, the as-assembled hydride supercapacitor delivers a maximum energy density of 49.75 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 774.65 W kg −1 , as well as 88.9% capacitance retained after 3000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g −1 . A current collector of reduced graphene oxide modified Ni foam (RN) is synthesized through a handy method of hydrothermal. The sheet-like reduced graphene oxide (rGO) wrapped around the skeleton of Ni foam establishes a unique structure of the current collector with large surface area as well as good electronic conductivity which make a positive effect on the promotion of electrochemical property. Pd is chosen as the catalyst and deposited on the RN substrate in a form of nanoparticle by potentiostatic electro-deposition. Characterization analysis including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductive coupled plasma emission spectrometer (ICP) are conducted to investigate the morphology and structure of the final electrode of Pd nanoparticles decorated rGO supported on Ni foam (PRN). In 2 mol L −1 NaOH and 0.5 mol L −1 H 2 O 2 , a current density of 450 mA cm −2 is gained on the PRN electrode which is much larger than that on the electrode of Pd nanoparticles directly deposited on Ni foam (PN). An excellent stability of the PRN electrode is also concluded by the measurements revealing that this material can be potentially and widely applied to direct hydrogen peroxide fuel cell in the near future. Herein, the hierarchical nickel–iron phosphide (Ni-Fe-P) nanosheet directly grown on Ni foam (NF) is proposed as a high-efficiency self-supported bifunctional electrocatalyst. Integrating the advantages of the unique architecture and the composition, the Ni-Fe-P/NF electrode displays highly alluring electrocatalytic activity and stability toward EOR as well as hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The as-assembled Ni-Fe-P/NF//Ni-Fe-P/NF hybrid ethanol–water electrolyser only requires 1.53 V to supply 10 mA cm−2, outperforming the sole water splitting (1.66 V). Noteworthily, the liquid product of electrolysis is more meritorious than the raw material, highlighting that the hybrid ethanol–water electrolyser we elaborated possesses prodigious potentiality for application in energy-saving H 2 generation and the oxidation of ethanol into acetic acid. [Display omitted] • Nitrogen-rich biomass carbon (N-CHC) was prepared by urea etching method. • N-CHC exhibits excellent capacity and rate performance as a K+ half-cell anode. • Large specific surface area, lots of defects and heteroatoms are key advantages. • The hybrid capacitor composed of N-CHC and AC exhibits high energy and power density. Potassium ion hybrid capacitors have the advantages of high energy density, high power density, and low cost, and are expected to replace expensive lithium ion storage devices in large-scale applications. Here, an innovative nitrogen-rich biomass carbon (N-CHC) is prepared using urea as the etchant and hemp core as the raw material, which has a high specific surface area of 1185.3 m2 g−1 and nitrogen content of 8.56%. In addition, it shows a capacity of 442.4 mAh g−1 as a potassium ion half-cell anode at 30 mA g−1. Even under the high current test of 2000 mA g−1, N-CHC also shows excellent performance (175.0 mAh g−1). Further, the good rate performance is attributed to the large-scale capacitance control by analyzing reaction process kinetics. And the constant current intermittent titration technique (GITT) results show that N-CHC has a larger K+ diffusion coefficient than unetched biomass carbon. The maximum energy density of the full carbon-based hybrid capacitor composed of N-CHC anode and activated carbon cathode is 127.36 Wh kg−1, and the maximum power density is 2371 W kg−1. The composites composed of metal selenides and carbonaceous materials have revealed enormous potential in varied applications. Herein, CoSe 2 /reduced graphene oxide (CoSe 2 /RGO) composites are prepared by a low-cost and efficient microwave assisted method. The effects of RGO proportion on crystalline structure, microstructure and energy storage capacity are explored. Benefiting from the good electrical conductivity and reasonable RGO content, the CoSe 2 /RGO sample with 35.2 wt% RGO reveals an excellent specific capacitance of 761 F g−1 as well as outstanding durability. More importantly, we construct an all solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (CoSe 2 /RGO//active carbon) to broaden the voltage window, resulting in an enhanced energy density (43.1 Wh kg−1). The hybrid device presents a favorable durability with 10% capacity drop after 10,000 cycles. In addition, the practical applicability of asymmetric device is confirmed by powering a blue light emitting diode (LED) for more than 10 mins. Searching for anode materials with fast Li+ intercalation kinetics to mitigate the dynamic imbalance with the rapid capacitive cathode is the fundamental strategy to achieve high energy-power density of Li-ion capacitors (LICs). Hence, NiNb 2 O 6 hollow nanoparticles are first synthesized by hydrothermal method and then sealed with a protective N-doped carbon shell to achieve the target NiNb 2 O 6 @NC composite. As the anode of LICs, the NiNb 2 O 6 @NC sample exhibits a high capacity of 435.8 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1 and excellent rate performance of 47.8% capacity retention with the current density increased to 2 A g−1. The lithium storage mechanism of NiNb 2 O 6 is proposed as a combined conversion reaction and an intercalation reaction, which the NiNb 2 O 6 decomposes into Ni metal and Li x Nb 2 O 5 during the 1st discharge/charge process. The irreversible Ni would not contribute to the reversible capacity and will improve the electric conductivity for fast transport of electrons and the Li x Nb 2 O 5 will act as the host for lithium ions by means of the intercalation mechanism. Furthermore, the assembled NiNb 2 O 6 @NC//activated carbon LICs exhibit a maximum energy density of 123.9 Wh kg−1 and the capacity retention reaches 86.1% after 5000 cycles. The demands for wearable energy storage devices keep growing and novel flexible electrode materials and facile prepared methods for these devices are crucial and attractive. In this work, human hair fiber is employed as the flexible fiber-based material due to the high utilization values of low cost, controllable length and high elasticity capable. Herein, an effective and hazard-free microwave-assisted method is reported to develop superelastic reduced graphene oxide coating human hair (rGO@Hh) to achieve conductive and high-strength fibrous electrode. With the braided rGO@Hh fibers, nickel hydroxide nanoribbon-intercalated rGO nanosheets (Ni(OH) 2 /rGO@Hh) are further prepared through microwave radiation treatment, which shows an interconnected porous structure with outstanding electrochemical performances of high specific capacitance (316 F g−1 at 1 A g−1) and good cycling performance. Moreover, a solid-state fiber-based asymmetric supercapacitor (FASC) is assembled with rGO@Hh fibers and Ni(OH) 2 /rGO@Hh fibers as negative and positive electrodes, which demonstrates a high energy of 27.6 Wh kg−1 and a power density of 699 W kg−1, respectively.
