Paper-based platforms for biological studies have received significant attention given that cellulose is ubiquitous, biocompatible, and can be readily organized into tunable fibrous structures. In the latter form, effect of complexity in surface morphologies (roughness, porosity and fiber organization) on cell-substrate interaction has not been thoroughly explored. We infer that altering the properties of a fibrous material should lead to significant changes in cellular microenvironment and direct the deposition of structurally analogous extracellular matrix (fiber-fiber templating) like collagen. Here, we elucidate the effect of varying paper roughness and surface chemistry on NIH/3T3 fibroblasts via organization of excreted collagen. Collagen intensity was found to increase linearly with paper porosity, indicating a 3D culture platform. The intensity, however, decays over time due to biodegradation of the substrate. Stability can be improved by introducing fluorinated alkyl silanes to yield hydrophobic paper. This process concomitantly transforms the substrate to a 2D-like scaffold where collagen is predominantly assembled on the surface, thus changing the cellular microenvironment. Altering surface energy also led to fluctuations in collagen intensity and organization over time for smooth (calendered) paper substrates. We infer that the increased roughness improves collagen adsorption through capillary driven petal effect. In general, the influence of the substrate simultaneously affects its ability to host collagen and guide orientation. These findings offer insights into the effects of secondary structures and chemistry of fibrous polymeric materials on cell culture, which we propose as vital parameters when using paper-based platforms. An anisotropic aerogel hot-extrusion strategy is designed to convert polyimide aerogels into aerogel-based paper. The multilayer interconnected aerogel-based paper exhibits excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties, and the mechanical properties remain great at high temperatures. This aerogel-based paper has huge application potential in the aerospace field. The continuous improvement of papermaking technology has attracted widespread attention. However, the prevention of high-temperature decomposition and a subsequent decline in mechanical strength is still a significant challenge with current papermaking technology. Herein, a newly developed multilayer interconnected polyimide aerogel-based paper was successfully prepared via an anisotropic aerogel hot-extrusion strategy. Precursor solutions of highly rigid benzimidazole units containing intermolecular hydrogen bonds and linear rod-like benzimide units were first prepared. Anisotropic precursor polyimide (PAAS) aerogels with a thickness of 3 mm were then manufactured by unidirectional freeze-drying. Then, aerogel-based papers with a thickness of 40 μm and microstructure multilayer interconnected properties were obtained by a hot extrusion strategy and a thermal imidization process. This polyimide structural paper exhibited excellent thermal and mechanical properties. Through the design of micro and macro structures, the tensile strength of the aerogel-based paper was much higher than that of commercial paper at both room temperature and 400 ℃. This aerogel-based paper also exhibited high-temperature cycle stability, high flexibility, and good stretchable bending properties. The successful preparation of this aerogel-based paper demonstrates the feasibility of the hot extrusion strategy. Paper-based materials have been used in every aspect of social life. However, the current paper-based materials face unprecedented challenges, such as limited lifespan and poor mechanical strength, owing to the deformation after absorbing a large amount of water and bacterial erosion. Herein, superhydrophobic and lyophobic paper was fabricated using internal sizing technology. Hydrophobically modified starch and Ag@SiO 2 particles were added as two functional additives to paper pulp to promote a hierarchical structure formation with low surface energy. Consequently, the water and linseed oil contact angles of the obtained paper reached 154.8° and 138.4°, respectively. The resistance to moisture and water vapor also improved under high-humidity condition, the relative moisture content decreased from 511% to 278% and water vapor transmission rate also decreased from 97.44 to 21.23 g/m2·h. Furthermore, its mechanical properties could also be well maintained with a high fracture stress of 4.91 MPa. Besides, some liquid food, such as honey, easily rolled off the surface without leaving behind any residue, which demonstrated its self-cleaning ability. Furthermore, the modified paper exhibited notable bacterial repellency and antibacterial activity. This study provides an innovative method for endowing conventional paper with superhydrophobic and antibacterial properties, which can effectively expand their application scope. Abstract: Survey and high-resolution (HR) XPS studies indicate that OMCTSO plasma treatment created a new silicon containing functional groups and changed the hydroxyl content on the surface of paper. Four intense survey XPS spectrum peaks were observed for the OMCTSO plasma treated paper. They were the Si2p at 100eV, Si2s at 160eV, C1s at 285eV, and O1s at 525eV for the plasma modified surface. It was realized that the macromolecular chain-breaking mechanisms and plasma-induced etching processes control the number and the availability of OH-functionalities during OMCTSO plasma exposure on paper. The reaction, initiated by these species, depends mainly on the nature of chemicals in the plasma as well as on the energy level of the plasma and the nature of the surface effects in the modification of the paper. The ATR-FTIR spectrum of paper treated with OMCTSO plasma has characteristic absorption bands attributed to the Sice:glyph name="sbnd" />Oions on the surface. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: An alternative, new approach to improve the hydrophobicity and barrier properties of paper was evaluated by radio-frequency (RF) plasma octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTSO) vapor treatment. The interaction between OMCTSO and paper, causing the increased hydophobicity, is likely through covalent bonding. The deposited thin silicone-like polymeric layer from OMCTSO plasma treatment possessed desirable hydrophobic properties. The SEM micrographs showed uniformly distributed grainy particles with various shapes on the paper surface. Deposition of the silicone polymer-like layer with the plasma treatment affects the distribution of voids in the network structure and increases the barrier against water intake and air. The water absorptivity was reduced by 44% for the OMCTSO plasma treated sheet. The highest resistance to air flow was an approximately 41% lower air permeability than virgin paper. Abstract: Papers have a complex hierarchical structure and the end-user functionalities such as hydrophobicity are controlled by a finishing layer. The application of an organic nanoparticle coating and drying of the aqueous dispersion results in an unique surface morphology with microscale domains that are internally patterned with nanoparticles. Better understanding of the multi-scale surface roughness patterns is obtained by monitoring the topography with non-contact profilometry (NCP) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) at different sampling areas ranging from 2000μm×2000μm to 0.5μm×0.5μm. The statistical roughness parameters are uniquely related to each other over the different measuring techniques and sampling sizes, as they are purely statistically determined. However, they cannot be directly extrapolated over the different sampling areas as they represent transitions at the nano-, micro-to-nano and microscale level. Therefore, the spatial roughness parameters including the correlation length and the specific frequency bandwidth should be taken into account for each measurement, which both allow for direct correlation of roughness data at different sampling sizes. Abstract: Calendering of paper is an industrial finishing process designed to smoothen its surface so as to improve gloss as well as printability. In this article, we describe how calendering affects paper roughness on both microscopic and macroscopic length scales. We also discuss how these modifications relate to the morphology of the fibers composing the paper sheets. The characterization of the surface is carried out using an optical profilometer and two different species of fibers, as well as their mixture, are used. We first show that calendering induces modifications of the surface on all length scales measured and that these modifications are related by straightforward transformations. Abstract: Pigment-coated, surface-sized, and surface-sized copy papers were treated with conventional corona, experimental pilot-scale plasma and laboratory-scale plasma. All the treatments increased the surface energy and oxidized the surface. The changes in the surface chemistry depended on treatment time and composition of the substrate surface. It seems that plasma especially oxidizes the long polymer chains, such as surfactants and other paper chemicals, on the surface of the paper. The ToF-SIMS distribution maps indicated that the pilot-scale treatment led to an uneven CO+ group distribution, whereas laboratory scale treatment gave a more even distribution of CO+ groups. In addition to chemical changes, topographical changes due to plasma treatment were detected. The RMS roughness increased for pigment-coated paper, whereas plasma treatment induced small nodules between the paper pigment particles with pigmented and surface-sized paper. The increase in roughness was also found to increase the wettability. This serves as a demonstration of roughness-induced increase of surface energy of the samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The study was performed to examine the correlation between the initial roughness and surface fluorination of paper under RF-CF4 plasma environment. Based on the experimental observations, a correlation was observed between surface fluorination and plasma parameters, e.g. RF-power, treatment time and gas pressure. The level of fluorination with RF-CF4 plasma treatment was found to be extensive in both side of paper. Even very short treatment time, as low as 1min at 300W power, provides effective implantation of fluorine (38.7%) on surfaces. It was observed that, CF4 plasma treatment had a significant effect on the molecular fragmentation on both side of paper. However, the felt side have a much stronger effect on plasma-induced dissociation and fluorination than in the wire side of paper. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In usual dry laser cleaning of opaque samples, short laser pulses are projected onto the sample surface to be cleaned. Energy transferred from light ejects extraneous particles away from the surface. Laser beam fluence is limited by the damage reached by high temperature that the sample surface can produce. We have experimentally shown that for thin samples, the thermo-elastic wave propagates within the whole sample thickness, thus also the rear surface, while temperature effects are limited to the front surface. Therefore, the proposed “verso” laser cleaning technique (the pulsed laser beam impinges on rear sample surface) can be applied to any opaque “mechanically thin” film and is useful for samples having delicate treatments on the surface to be cleaned (e.g. written paper, painted tiles, magnetic films). We have applied our technique to paper sheets showing that it is possible to efficiently clean the surface without damaging ink marks on it. Using a probe beam deflection (PBD) technique in both direct and reverse configuration we have shown that the “verso” cleaning effect is due to the higher penetration depth of the thermo-elastic wave with respect to the temperature profile propagation. Abstract: Cationic starch (CS) is routinely used in the papermaking process to improve the dry strength or printability of paper. The effectiveness depends on the distribution of the starch on the pulp fiber, and in this study, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry was used to investigate this distribution. The characteristic peak at 58m/z was applied to map the CS. Based on the imaging analysis of the handsheets with the CS as an internal additive, the distribution of CS became more uniform with decreasing freeness. The amount of adsorbed CS increased with increasing fiber length and was lower on vessels than on other fibers. These results were related to fibrillation. From the analysis of handsheets with CS as an external additive, the penetration depth of the starch into base paper increased with decreases in the sizing degree of the base paper. A robust superhydrophobic ZnO coating on a filter paper substrate was successfully prepared for the first time by using a successive deposition process and chemical modification. The surface morphology, chemical composition, wetting property, mechanical stability, chemical stability and durability of the filter papers were examined. The as-prepared papers exhibited an improved rough surface topography compared with the uncoated paper due to the uniform ZnO microclusters decorated on the reticular fibers. More importantly, it was found that the wettability of papers was dependent on the surface roughness, which was governed by the number of ZnO microcluster deposition cycles. After the chemical modification with stearic acid, the resulting paper with 4 cycles presented the optimized superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (WCA) of 158°, a slide angle (SA) of 3°, a low adhesion and good bounce performance. The chemical resistance of the superhydrophobic paper to corrosive liquids was studied. Moreover, the superhydrophobicity of paper was not affected after the water drops impact test or it was kept for 6 months, indicating its high impact resistance and long-term stability. The excellent superhydrophobicity of paper can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the suitable micro/nanoscale hierarchical roughness and the low surface energy modification.
