The finite element error and adaptive analysis are implemented in finite element procedures to increase the reliability of numerical analyses. In this paper, the mesh-free error-recovery technique based on moving least squares (MLS) interpolation is applied to recover the errors in the stresses and displacements of incompressible elastic finite element solutions and errors are estimated in energy norms. The effects of element types (triangular and quadrilateral elements) and the formation of patches (mesh-free patch, mesh-dependent element-based patch, and mesh-dependent node-based patch) for error recovery in MLS and conventional least-square interpolation-error quantification are also assessed in this study. Numerical examples of incompressible elasticity, including a problem with singularity, are studied to display the effectiveness and applicability of the mesh-free MLS interpolation-error recovery technique. The mixed formulation (displacement and pressure) is adopted for a finite element analysis of the incompressible elastic problem. The rate of convergence, the effectivity of the error estimation, and modified meshes for desired accuracy are used to assess the effectiveness of the error estimators. The error-convergence rates are computed in the original FEM solution, in the post-processed solution using mesh-free MLS-based displacement, stress recovery, mesh-dependent patch-based least-square-based displacement, and stress recovery (ZZ) as (0.9777, 2.2501, 2.0012, 1.6710 and 1.5436), and (0.9736, 2.0869, 1.6931, 1.8806 and 1.4973), respectively, for four-node quadrilateral, and six-node triangular meshes. It is concluded that displacement-based recovery was more effective in the finite element incompressible elastic analysis than stress-based recovery using mesh-free and mesh-dependent patches. Error estimation and adaptive applications help to control the discretization errors in finite element analysis. The study implements the radial point interpolation (RPI)-based error-recovery approaches in finite element analysis. The displacement/pressure-based mixed approach is used in finite element formulation. The RPI approach considers the radial basis functions (RBF) and polynomials basis functions together to interpolate the finite element solutions, i.e., displacement over influence zones to recover the solution errors. The energy norm is used to represent global and local errors. The reliability and effectiveness of RPI-based error-recovery approaches are assessed by adaptive analysis of incompressibility elastic problems including the problem with singularity. The quadrilateral meshes are used for discretization of problem domains. For adaptive improvement of mesh, the square of error equally distributed technique is employed. The computational outcome for solution errors, i.e., error distribution and convergence rate, are obtained for RPI technique-based error-recovery approach employing different radial basis functions (multi quadratic, thin-plate splint), RBF shape parameters, different shapes of influence zones (circular, rectangular) and conventional patches. The error convergence in the original FEM solution, in FEM solution considering influence-zone-based RPI recovery with MQ RBF, conventional patch-based RPI recovery with MQ RBF and conventional patch LS-based error recovery are found as (0.97772, 2.03291, 1.97929 and 1.6740), respectively, for four-node quadrilateral discretization of problem, while for nine-node quadrilateral discretization, the error convergence is (1.99607, 3.53087, 4.26621 and 2.54955), respectively. The finite element technique has been accepted as a tool for modeling geotechnical complex processes. In this study, finite element (FE) modeling of various stages of the soil-nailing process, i.e., construction stages and overburden pressure stages, is carried out considering different soil parameters, simulating with in-house developed laboratory models. The soil-nailing process built in laboratory models is idealized as a plain strain problem and modeled in PLAXIS software. The laboratory models of the soil-nailing process consist of a Perspex sheet box containing a sandy soil slope, a Perspex sheet facing, steel bars as reinforcement and a steel plate as foundation. The stress–strain relationship of the sand is represented by a Hardening-Soil model. The interface at the soil and nail is described by the Coulomb friction model. The behavior of the soil-nailing process, during the construction stage and under varying overburden pressure and varying soil density, are investigated in terms of displacements of slope and stress conditions in slope soil mass. The slope displacements and stress conditions in slope soil mass are all well presented by the FE modeling and compared with laboratory model test data. The sensitivity analysis of the laboratory models' dimensions is carried out by three-dimensional modeling of the nailed-soil slope. It can be concluded that the developed finite element model has the potential to simulate the performance of a field nailed-soil slope during construction and working stages and could provide guidance for the construction/maintenance of soil-nailed cut slopes in granular soils/weathered rocks. The displacement and stress-based error estimates in a posteriori error recovery of compressible and nearly-incompressible elastic finite element solutions is investigated in the present study. The errors in the finite element solutions, i.e., in displacement and stress, at local and global levels are computed in L2-norm of quantity of interest, namely, displacements and gradients. The error estimation techniques are based on the least square fitting of higher order polynomials to stress and displacement in a patch comprising of node/elements surrounding and including the node/elements under consideration. The benchmark examples of compressible and incompressible elastic bodies, with known solutions employing triangular discretization schemes, are implemented to measure the finite element errors in displacements and gradients. The mixed formulation involving displacement and pressure is used for incompressible elastic analysis. The performance of error estimation is measured in terms of convergence properties, effectivity and mesh required for predefined precision. The error convergence rate, in FEM original solution, recovered solution using displacement recovery-based and stress-based error recovery technique for stresses, are obtained as (1.9714, 2.8999, and 2.5018) and (0.9818, 1.7805, and 1.4952) respectively for compressible and incompressible self-loaded elastic plate benchmark example using higher order triangular elements. It is concluded from the study that displacement fitting technique for extracting higher order derivatives shows a very effective technique for recovery of compressible and nearly-incompressible finite element analysis errors. The Zienkiewicz–Zhu (ZZ) super-convergent patch recovery technique based on a node neighborhood patch configuration is used most widely for recovery of the stress field of a finite element analysis. In this study, an improved ZZ recovery technique using element neighborhood patch configuration is proposed. The improved recovery procedure is based on recovery of the stress field in the least-squares sense over an element patch that consists of the union of the elements surrounding the element under consideration. The proposed patch configuration provides more sampling points and improves the performance of the standard ZZ recovery technique. The effectiveness and reliability of the improved ZZ recovery approach is demonstrated through plane elastic and plastic plate problems. The problem domain is discretized with triangular and quadrilateral elements of different sizes. A comparison of the quality of error estimation using the ZZ recovery of derivative field and recovery of the displacement field using similar element neighborhood patch configurations is also presented. The numerical results show that the ZZ recovery technique and the displacement recovery technique, using a modified patch configuration, yield better results, convergence rate, and effectivity as compared with the standard ZZ super-convergent patch recovery technique. It is concluded that the improved ZZ recovery technique-based adaptive finite element analysis is very effective for converging a predefined accuracy with a significantly smaller number of degrees of freedom, especially in an elastic problem. It is also concluded that the improved ZZ recovery technique captures the plastic deformation problem solution errors more reliably than the standard ZZ recovery technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The penetration to geological shield occurs in many situations at various velocities and scales, for example, meteor-cratering, pile driving, falling of objects from high-rise building construction, and debris/fragments from failed components. The soil media is an efficient energy dissipation system and effective shock protection shield. Impact circumstances are currently getting widespread attention. A lot of research has been done on soil media for impact and penetration. The phenomenon of dynamic penetration in heterogeneous particulate soil medium is very complex and the target soil media under dynamic impact especially under high speed and deep penetration neither behave completely as solid nor as liquid. The topics of recent research interest in the field of penetration to soil media and their significant findings are critically reviewed in the present study. The dedicated review of analytical, empirical, experimental, and computational methods to predict the response of soils media-impacting objects to penetration is presented. The emerging challenges in fundamental research of penetration into soil media are outlined and it is an attempt to formulate the future research directions in the field of soil media penetration.
