The steel industry is typical process manufacturing, and the quality and cost of the products can be improved by efficient operation of equipment. This paper proposes an efficient diagnosis and monitoring method for the gearbox, which is a key piece of mechanical equipment in steel manufacturing. In particular, an equipment maintenance plan for stable operation is essential. Therefore, equipment monitoring and diagnosis to prevent unplanned plant shutdowns are important to operate the equipment efficiently and economically. Most plant data collected on-site have no precise information about equipment malfunctions. Therefore, it is difficult to directly apply supervised learning algorithms to diagnose and monitor the equipment with the operational data collected. The purpose of this paper is to propose a pseudo-label method to enable supervised learning for equipment data without labels. Pseudo-normal (PN) and pseudo-abnormal (PA) vibration datasets are defined and labeled to apply classification analysis algorithms to unlabeled equipment data. To find an anomalous state in the equipment based on vibration data, the initial PN vibration dataset is compared with a PA vibration dataset collected over time, and the equipment is monitored for potential failure. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is applied to the vibration signals collected to obtain an image dataset, which is then entered into a convolutional neural network (an image classifier) to determine classification accuracy and detect equipment abnormalities. As a result of Steps 1 to 4, abnormal signals have already been detected in the dataset, and alarms and warnings have already been generated. The classification accuracy was over 0.95 at d = 4 , confirming quantitatively that the status of the equipment had changed significantly. In this way, a catastrophic failure can be avoided by performing a detailed equipment inspection in advance. Lastly, a catastrophic failure occurred in Step 9, and the classification accuracy ranged from 0.95 to 1.0. It was possible to prevent secondary equipment damage, such as motors connected to gearboxes, by identifying catastrophic failures promptly. This case study shows that the proposed procedure gives good results in detecting operation abnormalities of key unit equipment. In the conclusion, further promising topics are discussed. Recently, the technologies of on-device AI have been accelerated with the development of new hardware and software platforms. Therefore, many researchers and engineers focus on how to enable ML technologies on mobile devices with limited hardware resources. In this paper, we revisit on-device ML designed to support ML technologies on mobile devices and describe the three challenges when using on-device ML in detail. Then, we propose a new data management policy, called Overlay-ML, which efficiently solves two challenges that we discovered. Especially, we designed Overlay-ML to work in the application space with two key ideas. The first key idea is to extend the limited memory space using the usable space of the underlying storage device. The second key idea is to provide data transparency, which hides where the data is stored so that running ML models think the data is stored in the same place. For evaluation, we implemented an image detection application based on TensorFlow Lite which is a well-known on-device ML framework, and modified it to enable the features of Overlay-ML. All evaluation was performed on two state-of-the-art smartphones that are high-end embedded devices. This paper addresses the limitations of relying solely on facial expressions for emotion recognition by proposing an advanced approach that emphasizes continuous monitoring of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Recognizing the potential for deception in facial expressions, our study leverages the growing interest in EEG signals, tapping into advancements in deep learning and machine learning. By optimizing the configuration of EEG electrodes, our approach enhances the accuracy of emotion classification systems, offering a streamlined solution. The proposed multi-input system refines EEG-based emotion recognition efficiency and integrates facial expression analysis to enhance overall system effectiveness. Through the application of brain heat map topographies and facial expression recognition, our system, employing just nine electrodes, outperforms basic emotion recognition setups. Experimental results validate that combining facial expression analysis with EEG signals provides a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of human emotions. This innovative approach holds significance across various sectors, including healthcare, psychology, and human–computer interaction. The paper introduces a novel multi-input system approach, collaboratively fusing two powerful deep learning algorithms: two Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The proposed EEG-based CNN algorithm achieves an efficiency of 87.43%, rising to 91.21% when integrated with the DeepFace CNN. The seamless integration of facial expressions and brain topographies enables the system to efficiently harness abundant information from both modalities, ensuring a thorough comprehension of human emotions. By capitalizing on the combined advantages of analyzing facial expressions and EEG-derived brain topography, this avant-garde technique substantially improves both precision and efficiency in emotion recognition systems. With the advent of the era of big data and information technology, deep learning (DL) has become a hot trend in the research field of artificial intelligence (AI). The use of deep learning methods for parameter inversion, disease identification, detection, surrounding rock classification, disaster prediction, and other tunnel engineering problems has also become a new trend in recent years, both domestically and internationally. This paper briefly introduces the development process of deep learning. By reviewing a number of published papers on the application of deep learning in tunnel engineering over the past 20 years, this paper discusses the intelligent application of deep learning algorithms in tunnel engineering, including collapse risk assessment, water inrush prediction, crack identification, structural stability evaluation, and seepage erosion in mountain tunnels, urban subway tunnels, and subsea tunnels. In the era of extensive data acquisition from manufacturing and transportation processes, the utilization of machine learning and deep learning techniques has emerged as a potent force for informed decision-making and optimized deliveries in contemporary urban landscapes. This study presents a novel approach grounded in deep learning, where product data are systematically gathered to construct a multilayer perceptron neural network model. This model proves instrumental in efficiently classifying product flows within the urban milieu. Featured Application: The methodology developed in this study provides a robust way of tracking down specific events in hydraulic fracturing. The innovative workflow produced an effective diagnostics tool. Ultimately, the featured event detection and diagnostics can make it possible to find optimal solutions for oil/gas well completion design, spacing and infill, production management, and wellbore protection. The primary objective of the study was development of a machine learning (ML)-based workflow for fracture hit ("frac hit") detection and monitoring using shale oil-field data such as drilling surveys, production history (oil and produced water), pressure, and fracking start time and duration records. The ML method takes advantage of long short-term memory (LSTM) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks to identify the frac hits due to hydraulic communication between the fracking child well(s) and the producing parent well(s) within the same pad (intra-pad interaction) and/or on different pads (inter-pad interaction). It utilizes time series of pressure and production data from within a pad and from adjacent pads. The workflow can capture time variable features of frac hits when the model architecture is deep and wide enough, with enough trainable parameters for deep learning and feature extraction, as demonstrated in this paper by using training and testing subsets of the field data from selected neighboring pads with over a couple of hundred wells. Cloud cover assessment is crucial for meteorology, Earth observation, and environmental monitoring, providing valuable data for weather forecasting, climate modeling, and remote sensing activities. Depending on the specific purpose, identifying and accounting for pixels affected by clouds is essential in spectral remote sensing imagery. In applications such as land monitoring and various remote sensing activities, detecting/removing cloud-contaminated pixels is crucial to ensuring the accuracy of advanced processing of satellite imagery. Typically, the objective of cloud masking is to produce an image where every pixel in a satellite spectral image is categorized as either clear or cloudy. Nevertheless, there is also a prevalent approach in the literature that yields a multi-class output. With the progress in Machine and Deep Learning, coupled with the accelerated capabilities of GPUs, and the abundance of available remote sensing data, novel opportunities and methods for cloud detection have emerged, improving the accuracy and the efficiency of the algorithms. This paper provides a review of these last methods for cloud masking in multispectral satellite imagery, with emphasis on the Deep Learning approach, highlighting their benefits and challenges. Featured Application: Port managers can use predictions of the wave overtopping predictors created in this work to take preventative measures and optimize operations, ultimately improving safety and helping to minimize the economic impact that overtopping events have on the port's activities. This paper analyses the application of deep learning techniques for predicting wave overtopping events in port environments using sea state and weather forecasts as inputs. The study was conducted in the outer port of Punta Langosteira, A Coruña, Spain. A video-recording infrastructure was installed to monitor overtopping events from 2015 to 2022, identifying 3709 overtopping events. The data collected were merged with actual and predicted data for the sea state and weather conditions during the overtopping events, creating three datasets. We used these datasets to create several machine learning models to predict whether an overtopping event would occur based on sea state and weather conditions. The final models achieved a high accuracy level during the training and testing stages: 0.81, 0.73, and 0.84 average accuracy during training and 0.67, 0.48, and 0.86 average accuracy during testing, respectively. The results of this study have significant implications for port safety and efficiency, as wave overtopping events can cause disruptions and potential damage. Using deep learning techniques for overtopping prediction can help port managers take preventative measures and optimize operations, ultimately improving safety and helping to minimize the economic impact that overtopping events have on the port's activities. Deep learning algorithms are widely used for pattern recognition in electronic noses, which are sensor arrays for gas mixtures. One of the challenges of using electronic noses is sensor drift, which can degrade the accuracy of the system over time, even if it is initially trained to accurately estimate concentrations from sensor data. In this paper, an effective drift compensation method is introduced that adds sensor drift information during training of a neural network that estimates gas concentrations. This is achieved by concatenating a calibration feature vector with sensor data and using this as an input to the neural network. The calibration feature vector is generated via a masked-autoencoder-based feature extractor trained with transfer samples, and acts as a prompt to convey sensor drift information. Our method is tested on a 3-year gas sensor array drift dataset, showing that a neural network using our method performs better than other models, including a network with additional fine tuning, demonstrating that our method is efficient at compensating for sensor drift.
