Abstract

In this work, we have prepared an antiferromagnetic insulated α-Fe2O3 film with a large out-of-plane magnetic component and studied the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in α-Fe2O3/Pt bilayers. Both angular-dependent magnetoresistance and field-dependent magnetoresistance have featured a sign change characteristic with varying temperature, which is ascribed to the competition between a modulated interface magnetic state and an antiferromagnetic bulk state of the α-Fe2O3 film. According to a generalized theoretical model, which takes the effective spin conductance into consideration, the spin transport can be mathematically expressed as the change of field dependent average spin operators with varying temperature. The critical temperature also depends on the α-Fe2O3 film thickness and the magnetic field, which are ascribed to the magnons transport and long-range order of non-collinear spin textures, respectively. Furthermore, we have given a phenomenological form to fit the SMR curves in the critical temperature interval, which further reveals the origin of SMR with complex magnetic structures. Abstract

The discovery of the giant magnetoresistance effect has led to the rapid development of spintronics. Although the half-metals can provide a 100% spin polarization rate and significantly improved giant magnetoresistance, the materials with low Curie temperatures present challenges for their use at room temperature. In an attempt to identify the half-metallic material with high Curie temperatures for spintronics, this study investigates a van der Waals heterostructure with vertically integrated FeCl2/WSe2/FeCl2. The spin-polarized transport properties of the device based on the heterostructure studied by the density function theory combined with nonequilibrium Green's function reveal comprehensive spintronics functions, including giant magnetoresistance, spin filtering, and negative differential resistance effect. The mechanism of the negative differential resistance effect has further been elucidated by the band alignment of the heterostructure under different biases within the bias window. Abstract

The temperature dependence of the in-plane saturation magnetization of the Fe3O4/MgO/SrTiO3 multiferroic heterostructure is investigated under various electric fields. The MgO interlayer is utilized to introduce oxygen vacancies into the heterostructure. Compared with the case of the Fe3O4/SrTiO3, a different variation trend of the magnetization has been attained in the Fe3O4/MgO/SrTiO3 since the oxygen vacancies accumulate on the Fe3O4 layer at the negative electric field. The magnetoelectric coupling coefficient of the Fe3O4/MgO/SrTiO3 at an electric field of −500 kV/cm is 1.21 Oe·cm/kV, 42% larger than that of the Fe3O4/SrTiO3. The distribution of oxygen vacancies controlled by the electric field plays an important role in the modulation of magnetization. The insertion of the MgO layer is responsible for the larger magnetoelectric response. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report unambiguous observation of spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) in a dispersive suspension of graphite flakes. This coherent nonlinear optical effect in bulk graphite is found to be broadband and large, with a third-order nonlinear susceptibility Χ(3) of 2.2 x 10-9 esu (i.e., 3.1 x 10-17 m²/V² in SI units) at 532 nm excitation. Comparison with other carbon allotropes shows that this value is 5 x 107 times higher than that of C60 but ~50 times lower than that of graphene, fully exhibiting the electronic origin of SSPM.
