We report a laser-diode-end-pumped acousto-optical Q-switched double-end diffusion-bonded Nd : YVO self-Raman laser at 1176 nm. The maximum average output power at the first-Stokes wavelength of 1176 nm was obtained to be 3.1 W at the incident pump power of 25 W and the repetition rate of 90 kHz, with the corresponding optical conversion efficiency of 12.4%. The shortest pulse width, the maximum pulse energy and the highest peak power were measured to be 5 ns, 42 μJ and 7.5 kW, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a physical understanding of scattering by subwavelength grooves surrounding a single perfect conductor slit based on the superposition of a cylindrical traveling surface wave and a standing surface wave. The collective reflection coefficient was introduced to handle the multi-interaction of the surface wave between subwavelength grooves, and a slit–grooves focusing structure was designed to demonstrate its validity. In comparison to numerical simulations by the finite difference time domain method, the proposed method proves effective in describing the multi-interaction behavior of a surface wave and in further refining the phase perturbation at the grooves’ exits. The authors theoretically demonstrate the terahertz beam shaping with metallic subwavelength holes array surrounded by concentric periodic grooves. High transmission and directional radiation can be obtained simultaneously for the resonant excitation of the surface wave in the combined structure. Finite-difference time-domain simulation results shows that the transmission mainly depends on the lattice constant of hole array and the features of incident surface around it, while the far-field angle distribution is dominated by the details of the output surface. Optical properties of silver nanobowtie with anisotropic topology, which is separated with nanogap that is horizontal (Y direction) and vertical (Z direction) to the line between the two constituent triangles (i.e., the bowtie axis), are studied. A discrete dipole approximation (DDA) method is used to determine the extinction efficiency and the electric field (E-field) distribution, then the corresponding enhancement factor (EF) and the full width half maximum (FWHM) of the E-field are obtained and analyzed. Our results show that the wavelength of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-induced blue-shifts and the maximum EF decrease were observed with increasing gap size for the parallel polarized (Z-polarized) excitation. It is also found that the light spot at the “hot spot” in the gap becomes larger and deviates from the rectangular pattern with the increase of the gap in the Z direction (Z-gap), and the FWHM in the Z direction of the localized E-field in the gap broadens with either an increase in the gap in the Y direction (Y-gap) or the Z-gap. These behaviors are due to the decrease of the coupling efficiency of near-field plasmon coupling. In contrast, the wavelength of the LSPR and the maximum EF excited by the perpendicularly polarized (Y-polarized) light show less dependence on the gap size than that of the Y-polarized light. In this paper, we propose an optimizing method for the beaming effect from a slit aperture with finite metallic grooves. Aiming at the beaming effect of the structure at 0°, we analyze the effect of the parameters including groove depth, groove width and groove number of the structure on the diffraction efficiency as well as angular spectra in the far field by approximation of the boundary condition of the quasi-perfect conductor assumption and the fundamental mode. Our optimization results demonstrate that the diffraction at other angles is efficiently suppressed. Finally, we give several optimized parameters of three common wavelengths of 10.6 μm, 808 nm and 632.8 nm, on the basis of using the optimizing method. The influence of V-shaped plasmonic nanostructures caused by focused ion beam milling on transmission properties are addressed in this paper. In order to evaluate the influence, a finite-difference and time-domain numerical method is employed for simulation of the plasmonic structures flanked with the corrugations with equal groove depth at the exit side of a metal film which is coated on a quartz substrate. Our simulation results have shown that a V-shaped subwavelength central slit/aperture is helpful for beam shaping. It plays a positive and dominant role in transmissivity. However, the V-shaped grooves cause a red shift of the peak wavelength and a broadening of the cut-off wavelength. This leads to the beam diverging in the region of the far field. In the case of the existence of both the V-shaped central slit and the V-shaped grooves, the influence of the grooves is less compared to that of the central slit, and can be ignored theoretically. An optical probe with a single aperture flanked by depth-tuned surface corrugations is presented. It can generate enhanced optical transmission at the exit of a slit and lower reflection at the top side of the compound dielectric/metal structure. The probe is designed and discussed on the basis of enhanced surface plasmon resonance for the purpose of high-resolution inspection use. A multidielectric probe consisting of air/glass/C/Ag/air is put forward. The influence of the thickness of the carbon film on the reduction of reflection is analyzed in detail combined with the relevant funneling effect induced by waveguide mode propagation through a central slit. Our simulation results show that a carbon film with a thickness of 150 nm and a 200-nm Ag film with the designed parabolic corrugations can reach our design target of the enhanced optical transmission and minimum reflection. We report a high-power laser-diode-array end-pumped 0.3 at.?% Nd:GdVO4 continuous-wave laser operating at 1.34 µm. The maximum output power of 13.3 W was obtained at the incident pump power of 49.2 W, giving the corresponding optical conversion efficiency of 27% and the average slope efficiency of 28.5%. We report, for the first time, efficient intracavity second-harmonic generation (SHG) at 1.06 μm in a non-linear optical crystal, BiB[sub 3] O[sub 6] (BIBO), at a type-I phase-matching direction of (θ,φ)=(168.9°,90°), performed with a LD end-pumped cw Nd:YVO[sub 4] laser. A cw SHG output power of 364 mW has been obtained using a 1.9-mm-thick BIBO crystal. The optical conversion efficiency was 12.2% and the corresponding effective intracavity SHG efficiency was determined to be 32.4%. It was found that the intracavity SHG efficiency is greater than that obtained with a type-II phase-matching KTiOPO[sub 4] (KTP) crystal with a thickness of 3 mm. The effective non-linear optical coefficient (d[sub eff] ) ratio of BIBO to that of KTP, determined experimentally, is 1.23:1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
