A slightly tapered graded index multimode fiber (GIMF) is demonstrated as the saturable absorber (SA) for a conventional soliton and tightly bound soliton generation. The SA device is simply a GIMF spliced with single-mode fiber (SMF) at its two ends. The waist diameter of the slightly tapered fiber is ∼23.8µ m , located at one of the splicing points of SMF and GIMF. The mode-locked output of conventional solitons and tightly bound solitons can be obtained in a ring fiber laser based on such a SA. The central wavelength of the output conventional solitons is 1563.5 nm, and the pulse width is as short as 473 fs at the fundamental frequency of 19.53 MHz. The central wavelength of the tightly bound solitons is 1563.5 nm, with a pulse width of 636 fs and a separation of 1.89 ps. The device is featured with a simple and robust structure and stable operation capability and can effectively overcome the difficulty in requirement of precise control of the GIMF length, which make it attractive in ultrafast lasers and optical fiber communication systems.

Developing micrometer-nanometer size optical fiber sensors has promising application prospects in microenvironments, such as biological cells, micro robots, and microfluids. We propose a new strategy to fabricate a microfiber sensor probe (MSP). A femtosecond laser was applied to integrate cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs) into a silica microfiber. And a MSP with diameter of ∼8µ m , extinction ratio of 15 dB, fitness of 24.6, and Q-factor of 2310 was demonstrated in the experiment. In addition, the MSP was applied for the refractive index and thermal measurement and the sensitivity was observed to be 10 pm/°C and 18.5 nm/RIU. The two-beam approximation model was applied to analyze the spectrum, and simulations were taken to research the refractive index sensitivity influenced by the fiber size.

A highly sensitive temperature sensor is demonstrated experimentally, which is fabricated based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) filled with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The sensor's sensitivity is -0.653   nm / ° C by utilizing the thermal expansion effect of PDMS, which has been greatly improved compared to that of the traditional FPI temperature sensor. Moreover, in order to further improve the sensitivity, a scheme where two parallel FPI structures are used to form the Vernier effect is proposed, which are a sensing FPI and reference FPI, respectively. Such a temperature sensor based on the FPI filled with PDMS and the Vernier effect exhibits a high temperature sensitivity of 17.758 nm/°C. Meanwhile, the proposed sensors show the advantages of high sensitivity, simplicity, and low cost.

We demonstrate a monolayer graphene saturable absorber (SA) based on D-shaped fiber for operation of the mode-locked fiber laser. The monolayer graphene is grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on Cu substrate and transferred onto the polymer, and then covered with D-shaped fiber, which allows light-graphene interaction via the evanescent field of the fiber. Due to the side-coupled interaction, the length of graphene is long enough to avoid optical power-induced thermal damage. Using such a graphene-based SA, stable mode-locked solitons with 4.5 nm spectral bandwidth and 713 fs pulsewidth at the 1563 nm wavelength have been obtained under 280 mW pump power. The influence of total cavity dispersion on the optical spectrum and pulse is also investigated by adding different lengths of single-mode fiber in the laser cavity.

We use the phase mask method to investigate both experimentally and theoretically the temporal thermal response of Type II-IR fiber Bragg gratings inscribed by a femtosecond laser. A fast testing system is developed to measure the thermal response time by means of periodic CO2 laser irradiation, which creates a rapid temperature change environment. The temporal thermal response is found to be independent of the heat power and the heat direction, although the grating produced destroys the axial symmetry of the fiber. The measured values of the temporal thermal response are approximately 230 ms for heating and approximately 275 ms for cooling, which different from the simulation results obtained from a lumped system equation. The causes of such differences are investigated in detail.

Asymmetric transverse-load characteristics and the polarization dependence of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written by high-frequency CO(2) laser pulses are investigated in detail. It is demonstrated that the resonant wavelength is dependent on the direction of the applied force and on the polarization state of the input light; however, the coupling strength is independent of these parameters. When a transverse load is applied along different orientations of the LPFG, the resonant wavelength may be shifted toward the longer wavelength, the shorter wavelength, or hardly shifted, whereas the absolute value of peak transmission attenuation is linearly decreased with an increase of the applied transverse load, with almost no sensitivity to the load direction. These unique transverse-load characteristics and the polarization dependence are due to the load-induced birefringence that leads to the rotation of optical principal axes in the LPFG.

A long period fiber grating (LPFG) temperature sensor system based on intensity modulation is developed. The LPFG employed is fabricated by the use of a focused CO2 laser beam to carve periodic grooves on the fiber. The temperature measurement resolution of up to 0.1 degrees C has been obtained within the temperature range between 20 degrees C and 100 degrees C. The system uses a simple intensity measurement method and exhibits the advantages of convenient intensity measurement, double temperature sensitivity, high resolution, simple configuration, and low cost.

A method for measuring the length of an optical fiber by use of an optical fiber ring laser pulse source is proposed and demonstrated. The key element of the optical fiber ring laser is a gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser diode operated in a self-injection seeding scheme. This method is especially suitable for measuring a medium or long fiber, and a resolution of 0.1 m is experimentally achieved. The measurement is implemented by accurately determining the pulse frequency that can maximize the output power of the fiber ring laser. The measurement results depend only on the refractive index of the fiber corresponding to this single wavelength, instead of the group index of the fiber, which represents a great advantage over both optical time-domain reflectometry and optical low-coherence reflectometry methods.

A simple system that simultaneously supports active mode-locking and self-seeding schemes for wavelength-tunable optical short-pulse generation is proposed. The system consists of a gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser diode, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, a tunable optical filter, and two circulators. The mode-locked optical pulses exhibit good stability, a high side-mode suppression ratio of more than 31 dB over a wide wavelength tuning range of 42 nm, and a pulse width of around 35 ps at a repetition frequency of approximately 2.8 GHz.

Generation of wavelength-tunable optical short pulses by use of two self-seeded Fabry-Perot laser diodes in a parallel configuration is described. The system supports continuous wavelength tuning in a relatively wide range of 42 nm. The side-mode suppression ratio achieved is 35 dB across the entire wavelength tuning range. The system is convenient for continuous wavelength tuning.

A simple self-seeding scheme is developed to generate tunable dual-wavelength optical short pulses in a flexible manner and with an increased wavelength-tuning range. The wavelength selection and tuning are achieved by simultaneous use of a fiber Bragg grating and a tunable optical filter. The side-mode suppression ratio of the output pulses is better than 30 dB over a wavelength-tuning range of 33.8 nm. The system is compact and convenient for dual-wavelength tuning.

A simple and robust system is presented to generate wavelength-tunable optical short pulses by use of two gain-switched Fabry-Perot laser diodes in a mutual pulse injection-seeding scheme. The operating wavelength of the optical pulses is flexibly selected by adjustment of a tunable filter, and its intensity is enhanced with an erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The side-mode suppression ratio achieved by the system is larger than 26 dB over a wavelength region of 25 nm and higher than 31 dB within an 18-nm wavelength.

We report the modeling results of an all-fiber gas detector that uses photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The relative sensitivity of the PCF as a function of the fiber parameters is calculated. Gas-diffusion dynamics that affect the sensor response time is investigated theoretically and experimentally. A practical PCF sensor aiming for high sensitivity gas detection is proposed.

We present the use of multiwavelength combination sources in a direct method for improved central fringe identification in a white-light interferometric system. The optimum wavelength combinations of such sources can be obtained by the use of the results of a simple analysis. We find that this multiwavelength technique can greatly reduce the minimum signal-to-noise ratio required by the systemwhen used to identify the central fringe, and thus it offers an increased signal resolution. As a result, it is suitable for high-precision measurement purposes as well as for applications in coherence multiplexed interferometric sensor systems.
