Low Carbon Technologies (LCTs), such as Photovoltaics (PVs), Electric Vehicles (EVs), and Heat Pumps (HPs), are expected to cause a huge electric load in future distribution grids. This paper investigates the grid impact in terms of over-loading and nodal voltage deviations in different distribution grids due to increasing LCT penetrations. The major objectives are the identification of the most severe LCT, grid impact issue, seasonal effect, and vulnerable distributional area, considering the physical models of the LCTs. It is concluded that Winter is the most hazardous for the future grid impact, characterized by nearly 3 times higher over-loading and 2.5 times higher voltage deviations during high HP penetrations, while suburban areas are the most vulnerable. Moreover, while HPs seem to have, in general, a greater impact compared to EVs, EVs cause more prolonged violations. While this work follows a bottom-up approach, using detailed physical models, aggregated national data has also been acquired, which is often used by top-down approaches. Different grid impact issues have been compared for the two approaches in terms of magnitude and duration. While bottom-up approaches generate more pessimistic results regarding the magnitude of the violations, results about the duration of the violations can be contradictory. • Transformer Overloading: a highly critical grid impact issue in LV distribution grids. • HPs provoke more violations compared to EVs, but EVs cause more prolonged violations. • Violations magnitude increase more than duration from light- to heavier-loaded grids. • EVs consumption is more well combined with PV generation than HP consumption. • Bottom-up approaches: Violations of higher magnitude but not always higher duration. Real-time energy optimization is essential for effective load scheduling, cost reduction, maintaining demand and supply balance, and ensuring reliable power system operations. However, real-time energy optimization is challenging due to the unpredictable nature of renewable energy sources (RES) and the behavior of electric loads. On this note, a rigid model is required that can deal with this dilemma. Thus, the Lyapunov optimization technique (LOT) emerged as a solution for the real-time energy optimization problem. This work investigates a smart home equipped with inflexible loads (TV, computer, light, etc.), flexible loads (EVs, HVAC, water heaters, etc.), and RES (photovoltaic and wind energy) in a grid-connected mode that ensures energy trading (purchasing and selling of energy). The aim is to optimize total cost, thermal discomfort cost, and batteries and EVs charging/discharging using LOT by real-time energy optimization, which does not require any system parameters to be anticipated. The proposed algorithm employs LOT for four queues to solve the real-time energy optimization problem. Simulations are conducted for different scenarios and varying weather conditions to endorse the effectiveness of the developed real-time energy optimization solution in various aspects of the performance metrics. • A model is developed for batteries/EVs charge/discharge process and load arrival/scheduling process. • The proposed algorithm relies on current system input states to provide real-time energy optimization. • The optimization is performed for load, storage, and comfort management without a-priori knowledge. • The algorithm is devised for specific period of time i.e., one-time slot look-ahead as per user needs. Due to limited energy density of batteries, energy management has always played a critical role in improving the overall energy efficiency of electric vehicles. In this paper, a key issue within the energy management problem will be carefully tackled, i.e., maximizing the power usage of batteries for battery-powered electrical vehicles with in-wheel motors. To this end, the battery and motor dynamics will be thoroughly examined with particular emphasis on the power conversion and power utilization. The optimal control strategy will then be derived based on the analysis. One significant contribution of this work is that an analytic expression for the optimal operating point in terms of the component and environment parameters can be obtained. Owing to this finding, the derived control strategy is also rendered a simple structure for real-time implementation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed strategy works both adaptively and robustly under different driving scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
