Abstract

Metal reduction and iron biomineralization by a marine psychrotolerant, dissimilatory Fe(III)-reducing bacterium, Shewanella sp. strain PV-4, from the microbial mat at a hydrothermal vent of Loihi Seamount in the Pacific Ocean are characterized. The results have shown that strain PV-4 has unique physiological characteristics and is transferable by conjugation.

Abstract

Resistance to ultraviolet light was measured in aerobic and microaerophilic subsurface bacteria. The organisms studied showed resistance levels that were comparable to those in surface bacteria. Approximately 31% of the aerobic subsurface bacteria studied were found in resist UV light when compared to that of 26% in surface bacteria. However, none of the microaerophilic, gram-negative, nonpigmented subsurface bacteria used in the study were UV resistant.

Abstract

The effects of nanoparticle concentration, particle size, exposure time, growth medium and pH on the growth and viability of Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Shewanella oneidensis were examined to understand the response mechanism of the bacteria and bacterial toxicity. The study highlights the application of different bacterial systems to understand the potential wide-ranging effects of nanomaterial interactions in the environment.

Abstract

A novel, obligately anaerobic, extremely thermophilic, cellulolytic bacterium ([OB47.sup.T]) is isolated from Obsidian Pool,Yellowstone Park. This organism is proposed as Caldicellulosiruptor obsidiansis [OB47.sup.T] sp. nov., based on small subunit rRNA analysis, genomic sequence comparisons and phenotypic proteins.
