Contrary to what indicates the famous – and questionable – formula "Bible des illetrés”, the medieval discourses on images went well beyond just highlighting its didactic function. In this article, we present a sample of this diversity, analyzing a number of medieval texts dealing with images, which we have divided into five broad categories (not mutually exclusive: on the contrary, sometimes complementary). The first and most numerous are the theoretical discourses on images involving theological questions. Then, still based on arguments of theological order, a second group corresponds to those texts that seek to intervene in the practice of images through normative propositions. As a result from the previous two types is the third group: the speeches dealing with the reception of images and the reactions they cause. A fourth group are the writings that mention the producers of images: both practical documents and those that express value judgments about their Works. And finally, there are texts that describe the images, both their iconographic content and their materiality.

O artigo analisa a construção de autoimagens pelos proprietários de terras e escravizados, por funcionários públicos, por autoridades municipais, por profissionais liberais e por comerciantes de Miranda, Santa Rita de Nioaque, Campos de Vacaria e Campo Grande durante a visita pastoral do bispo de Cuiabá, D. Carlos Luiz D’Amour, ao sul da província de Mato Grosso, em 1886. Essa elite procurava impor autoimagens positivas acerca da região e de si, entre elas a de que participavam da civilização, da cultura, do refinamento, das ciências, das humanidades e das artes do bem se comportar. Para tal, esmerava-se em construir uma autoapresentação ostentatória para exaltar seu papel de pioneira, civilizadora dos sertões, patriota e promotora do progresso. Esse teatro tinha feições simbólicas, econômicas, sociais e políticas, fosse para combater os estigmas de Mato Grosso como fronteira-sertão, fosse para alterar sua definição e identidade, ou ainda para afirmar seu poder de mando na sociedade.

The paper analyzes the construction of individual and collective self-images by the landowners and enslaved, public workers, authorities, liberal professionals and merchants of Miranda, Santa Rita de Nioaque, Campos de Vacaria and Campo Grande during the pastoral visit of the bishop of Cuiabá, D. Carlos Luiz D'Amour, in the south of the province of Mato Grosso in 1886. This elite sought to impose positive selfimages about the region and themselves, among them the idea that they participated in civilization, culture, refinement, sciences, humanities and the arts of good behavior. In order to do so, they attempted to construct an ostentatious self-presentation to exalt their role as pioneers, civilizers of backwoods, patriots and promoters of progress. This performance had symbolic, economic, social and political features not only to combat the stigmas of Mato Grosso as "frontier-sertão" and change its definition and identity but also to affirm its power of command in society. Ao contrário do que indica a famosa – e questionável – fórmula “Bíblia dos iletrados”, os discursos medievais sobre as imagens iam bem além de apenas destacar sua função didática. Neste artigo, apresentamos uma mostra dessa diversidade, analisando uma série de textos medievais acerca de imagens, que dividimos em cinco grandes categorias (não excludentes e por vezes complementares). O primeiro grupo, o mais numeroso, é o dos discursos teóricos sobre imagens, envolvendo questões teológicas. Em seguida, ainda que fundado em argumentos de ordem teológica, um segundo grupo corresponde àqueles textos em que se busca intervir na prática das imagens por meio de proposições normativas. Decorrente dos tipos anteriores é o terceiro grupo, o dos discursos que tratam da recepção das imagens, das reações frente a elas. Um quarto grupo são os escritos que mencionam os produtores de imagens: tanto os documentos de tipo prático quanto os comentários com juízos de valor a respeito do trabalho daqueles. E, por fim, estão os textos que trazem descrições, desde os que seguem de perto o gênero retórico da ekphrasis àqueles que descrevem a materialidade das imagens.

This article conducted an analysis on the multiple images of the Devil, based on three illuminations of the 15th century. It is possible to observe the following elements: 1-the evil one as a head, with a huge open mouth, known as the Hellmouth; 2-as a human being, but with animalistic characteristics, carrying claws, the tail, among other things, still with devouring aspect; 3-represented in beautiful shape, as the rebel angel, Lucifer, expelled from heaven by God. Three images were analyzed; one from the narrative Vision of Tondal, which it is represented as the Beast Acheron, in the form of Hellmouth, and two images of the book Les Très Riches Heures of the Duc de Berry (The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry), when figured with animalistic features in the image entitled "Inferno" (fl.108r) and with his angelic features in "The fall of the Rebel Angels" (fl. 64v). In the last two illuminations the Devil presents ruler of Hell elements. Moreover, it is clear that this has ambiguous features in Christian imagination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
