The article relates the author's collaboration with the Racial Disparity Project in Seattle, Washington in 2003. According to the author, she worked as researcher to identify the racial and ethnic composition of those arrested for delivering illegal drugs in the city and compare this information with the best available data on those who engage in this behavior. She notes that while working with the project, she has gotten to appreciate the importance of access to data for those seeking to assess institutional practices for democratic governance. The author admits that her work with the project has convinced her that systematic and thorough research is a key component of effective advocacy.
