Abstract

A number of factors of nonspecific reactivity, i.e. complement, lysozyme, properdin, blood serum bactericidal activity, leucocyte phagocytal activity, phagocytal index and completed phagocytosis were studied on 160 guinea pigs with experimental typhoid fever, dysentery and staphylococcal infections. The data of the study showed that with the use of prodigiozan the non-specific reactivity of the host increased even within a short period of time. At the same time the pathological changes in the internal organs in their histochemical investigation decreased.

Abstract

The therapeutic and prophylactic effectiveness of gentamicin, decamethoxin and prodigiozan was determined on albino mice infected with two-fold lethal doses of the antibiotic-resistant strain of Ps. aeruginosa. Correlation between the effectiveness of the drug and the dose and time of its administration was found. Pronounced prophylactic and therapeutic effect of gentamicin in combination with decamethoxin was noted. Prodigiozan, a bacterial polysaccharide had no significant effect on the experimental pyocyanic infection of albino mice.

Abstract

The epidemiological efficacy of 0.02 per cent solution of prodigiosan, a bacterial polysaccharide was used for the treatment of children in an area with acute respiratory infections, such as influenza and parainfluenza. The drug was administered intranasally by means of a dosing sprayer in the amounts of 0.2 ml once in 4 days for 4 months. Among the children treated with prodigiosan the rate of the acute respiratory viral infections was 2 times lower and the average duration of the disease was 2.4 times lower as compared to the control group. After 4 months of the drug use the average value of the "skin autoflora" test was much lower than that in the control group which testified to an increase in the non-specific immunobiological reactivity of the children under the effect of prodigiosan.

Abstract

The principle of functional loading, i.e. stimulation of the neutrophiles with enterobacterial inactivated vaccine in vitro or with bacterial polysaccharides in vivo followed by the NBT-test is recommended for adequate estimation of the neutrophile link in the system of the host defense from infections. 97 practically healthy persons were examined in Novosibirsk and Norilsk and it was shown that in the regions of the Far North there were differences among the population with respect to the initial functional activity of the neutrophiles and especially with respect to their reaction to the stimulation. The effect of neutrophile stimulation in vitro with an inactivated vaccine of Serratia marcescens was higher and more stable than that with a single inhalation of prodigiosan. The prevalence of the least pathway providing increased resistance of the phagocytosing cells to infection in the population of the Far North might be the cause of a significant risk of infectious diseases in them.

Abstract

In development of experimental melioidosis intoxication, the activity of the mechanisms controlling non-specific immunological reactions changed that was evident from changes both in the quantitative and qualitative indices of phagocytosis. The absorption function of the neutrophils was lowered during 2 days from the moment of administration of acetone killed bacterial mass of the melioidosis causative agent which was evident from decreased percentage and index of phagocytosis as compared to the control animals. The qualitative index of the digestive capacity of the neutrophils, i.e. the index of phagocytosis completeness was also low for 7 days of the experiment. The positive role of prodiglozan in activation of the host protective forces in cases with meliodosis intoxication was shown. Prodigizan administered 48 hours before injection of the bacterial mass of the melioidosis causative agent stimulated both the absorption and digestive capacities of the neutrophils.
