In their recent paper, Parnia and colleagues propose a new label for the near-death experience (NDE): recalled experience of death. They claimed NDEs are "authentic" only when an objective danger is present and that authentic NDEs have a proven core phenomenology. We consider that these claims are insufficiently supported by empirical data. NDEs appear as a continuum of heterogeneous experiences of consciousness precipitated by the disjunction of processes usually combined in normal mental activity. The "core phenomenology" of NDEs is also opened to several criticisms. Closeness to "real" death does not appear to be a decisive criterion for characterizing NDEs. A list of poster papers presented at a conference of the New York Academy of Sciences is presented, which includes one on metrical accenting in physically identical tones, one on the dynamic modulation of cortical beta and gama-band activity in response to musical pulse and one on synchronization of sound and motion in piano duet performances.

The dating of organic findings is a fundamental task for many scientific fields. Radiocarbon dating is currently the most commonly used method. For wood, dendrochronology is another state-of-the-art method. Both methods suffer from systematic restrictions, leading to samples that have not yet been able to be dated. Molecular changes over time are reported for many materials under different preservation conditions. Many of them are intrinsically monotonous. These monotonous molecular decay (MD) patterns can be understood as clocks that start at the time when a given molecule was formed. Factors that influence these clocks include input material composition and preservation conditions. Different wood species, degrees of pyrolysis, and pretreatments lead to different prediction models. Preservation conditions might change the speed of a given clock and lead to different prediction models. Currently published models for predicting the age of wood, paper, and parchment depend on infrared spectroscopy. In contrast to radiocarbon dating, dating via MD does not comprise a single methodology. Some clocks may deliver less precise results than the others. Ultimately, developing a completely different, new dating strategy-such as MD dating-will help to bring to light a treasure trove of information hidden in the darkness of organic findings., (© 2021 The Authors. The major issue addressed was how to introduce evolutionary thinking into epidemiology, and the appropriate approach to "evolutionary epidemiology." There was general agreement that disease emergence is not a static but a dynamic process, and that dynamic approaches should therefore be emphasized.

The 1970s saw a growing interest in the vasopressin−memory hypothesis, proposed by David de Wied and his collaborators in Utrecht. This rose to a peak in the 1980s that saw a flurry of papers published from diverse sources critical of the experimental foundations of this idea. In subsequent years, interest in this hypothesis declined markedly as shortcomings were recognized. Here, we study this debate using citation network analysis to identify the influential papers in this debate and the citation links between them. This paper considers neural representation through the lens of active inference, a normative framework for understanding brain function. It delves into how living organisms employ generative models to minimize the discrepancy between predictions and observations (as scored with variational free energy). The ensuing analysis suggests that the brain learns generative models to navigate the world adaptively, not (or not solely) to understand it. Different living organisms may possess an array of generative models, spanning from those that support action‐perception cycles to those that underwrite planning and imagination; namely, from explicit models that entail variables for predicting concurrent sensations, like objects, faces, or people—to action‐oriented models that predict action outcomes. It then elucidates how generative models and belief dynamics might link to neural representation and the implications of different types of generative models for understanding an agent's cognitive capabilities in relation to its ecological niche. The paper concludes with open questions regarding the evolution of generative models and the development of advanced cognitive abilities—and the gradual transition from pragmatic to detached neural representations. The analysis on offer foregrounds the diverse roles that generative models play in cognitive processes and the evolution of neural representation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Normal human diploid cells, such as WE-38, transformed by an oncogenic virus, SV40, are greatly depleted of a cathodal esterase isozyme using both immunological and enzymatic criteria. This cathodal esterase is primate-specific and associated with lysosomes of many different tissue cells. It provides a clear example of antigenic loss associated with malignant change.

In vitro incubation of isolated X. laevis oocytes with progesterone induces the specific labeling of proteins during maturation. They are detected as several discrete peaks with a double-labeling technique that involves the injection of [3H] leucine into hormone-treated and [14C] leucine into control cells. The peaks are separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Identical proteins are obtained with two other steroids that provoke maturation and with p-chloromercuribenzoate. The same progesterone-induced proteins are observed even if oocytes have been treated with actinomycin D or ethidium bromide or have been enucleated. Cycloheximide suppresses the labeling of proteins that are induced by progesterone, if administered either at the time of radioactive amino acid exposure or after prelabeling the oocytes to determine whether the hormone-induced peaks are due to compartmental changes of the proteins. A cytoplasmic fraction, obtained from maturing oocytes before GVBD, promotes maturation when injected into resting oocytes and therefore contains an MPF. After this injection, GVBD occurs earlier than during incubation with progesterone and is accompanied by the formation of the same proteins and of MPF, both suppressed by cycloheximide. The possibility that MPF is an induced protein is then discussed. It has been also found that there is a decrease in membrane permeability, as evidenced by decreased leucine uptake into proteins of oocytes incubated in radioactive amino acids and exposed to progesterone. The same decrease occurs after injection of MPF-containing cytoplasm into oocytes.

We have been able to demonstrate that glutaraldehyde fixation of tumor cells or tumor cell membrane fragments protect syngeneic mice against the subsequent challenge with viable cells. To date we have not been able to detect any antibody against the tumor cells in animals so immunized. The specificity of the response is not complete, although a major component of the protective effect of glutaraldehyde-treated tumor cells is immunologically specific.
