The second and major section of the volume is devoted to what the editor describes as the autograph record of Newton's attempts, here published for the first time, to restore the methods of discovery of the ancient geometers. That the classical synthetic proofs were founded on a prior analysis seemed clear from the accounts given by Pappus of the works collectively described by him as 'The treasury of analysis'. Despite the attempt of Fermat, Euclid's Porisms, a key work of this collection (known only through the account of Pappus), remained essentially unexplained. Whiteside points to the conjecture, that the primary function of' The treasury of analysis' was to provide a collection of basic locus-constructions and curve properties of practical use to geometers in the solution of problems, as Newton's most significant achievement; the intersecting loci of the ancients were the equations of later mathematics. In his restoration of Euclid's Porisms, Newton employed the one-to-one correspondence defined by the general bilinear transformation--in effect, a theory of involution--and then, abandoning his role as classical interpreter, developed an innovatory treatise on curves, which includes, as its principal result, a projective classification of curves of the third degree. From David Gregory, who was allowed to read Newton's papers on the occasion of a visit in 1694, we learn that Newton intended to append his restoration of the geometry of the ancients and his method of quadratures to his projected new edition of the Principia. With the deluge of Einsteiniana that has come out of the recent Einstein year, it was inevitable that the opposition forces would seize the opportunity to ride the tide of renewed interest in the science and persona of Albert Einstein. The American effort under review here comes in five parts. The first is a book-length essay by one of the editors, entitled The Einstein myth: a presentation of evidence for the reality of absolute space and time. It also serves as a 'reader's guide' to the entire volume. Part II, which takes up about half the book, is a collection of scientific papers relevant to relativity, written by the American physicist Herbert Ives (1882-1953), director of electro-optical research at the Bell Laboratories. These sixty-two papers, some published here for the first time in English, comprise about one-third of the writings, from 1922, of Leon Rosenfeld (1904-1974). Rosenfeld himself made the selection, and the editors have divided them into four categories, history of science, epistemology, theoretical physics, and social relations of science. A full fifty fall into the first two divisions. An overview of the papers is provided in the form of a valuable introduction by Stefan Rozental of the Bohr Institute, Copenhagen. One does not have to read far into the volume to realize that this acknowledged Marxist was by no means dogmatic; although also greatly interested in the social aspects of science, he was altogether of a different stripe from J. D. Bengal. His contributions to history of science include major articles on atomism. Newton and gravitation, thermodynamics, electrodynamics drawing attention to the work of Lorenz), early quantum theory (written in 1936), entropy, later quantum theory, and nuclear physics. The long-awaited comprehensive publication of Einstein's papers is an achievement of considerable importance. The project is a joint effort of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (to which Einstein bequeathed his manuscripts and copyrights) and Princeton University Press, which has sponsored a staff of historians and archivists under the direction of Professor John Stachel of Boston University. After several years of patient and systematic collecting of dispersed writings and documents of (or related to) Einstein, Professor Stachel's team has come out with an impressive first volume. It is the first of no less than approximately forty projected volumes in the series. It covers the years from 1879 to 1902, that is, the first twenty-three years of Einstein's life, which goes up to the time when he began to work for the Swiss Patent Office. When the Hall's edition of the Unpublished scientific papers of Isaac Newton first appeared in 1962, a new era in Newtonian scholarship was just under way. Scholars had finally begun to study and publish the vast quantity of Newton's manuscripts which had remained largely unexplored and unpublished for well over two centuries. In the succeeding years we have enjoyed the fruits of this renewed activity: the completion of the seven-volume edition of Newton's Correspondence, and the appearance of seven of the eight volumes of the edition of Newton's Mathematical papers, to mention only the most monumental works utilizing the unpublished manuscripts. The Halls' edition of the Unpublished scientific papers itself partly contributed to the renaissance of Newtonian studies by publishing previously unknown but important papers by Newton, thereby also stimulating younger scholars to explore in even greater depth the riches of the Portsmouth Collection. Despite the advance of Newtonian scholarship since 1962, this volume remains a useful one, for it contains in one convenient volume an important selection of documents, such as De gravitatione et aequipondio fluidorum and De acre et aethere (both with translation), most of which have not been published elsewhere. Since this is an unaltered paperback republication of the 1962 edition, save for the addition of a foreword and the omission of a now completely out of date bibliography, I find the price of _GCP_7.95 unreasonably high. Like its two predecessors, the third volume of the Joseph Henry Papers is an outstanding example of both scholarship and editorial policy. Through his letters, Henry's life is divided into three phases: the Albany years (1797-1832); the Princeton years (1832-1846), to which the present, volume belongs; and the Smithsonian years (1846-1878). This selection is primarily concerned with his preparations for European travel, his experiences in Paris and London, and his laboratory investigations centering on the phenomenon known as 'lateral discharge, a long-known but incompletely understood aspect of static electricity'. With extensive use of his European diary, covering March through August 1837, a few extracts of A. D. Bache's European diary, and letters to his wife, Harriet, we are presented with a memorable portrayal of the rewards and trials of the American savant's search for knowledge far from familiar customs and surroundings.
