Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship of subclinical inflammatory factors Platelet crit (PCT), Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), Monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), Platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) obtained from complete blood count (CBC) with Abortion Immunes (AI) and obstetric results. In recent years, studies reveal that subclinical inflammatory markers can be used as an indicator of the inflammatory process in many diseases. Few studies have evaluated indicators of inflammation and postpartum outcomes in abortion imminent patients. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted between January 2020 and January 2021. A total of 429 pregnant women, 203 of whom were pregnant with AI and 226 who were healthy, were included in the study. Results: PCT, NLR, and MLR values were significantly higher and PLR values were low in the AI group (p<0.05). PCT > 0.22, NLR > 2.29, and MLR > 0.20 were significantly associated with an increased risk of AI (p<0.05). PLR value above 135.5 was associated with the normal group. There was a significant difference between the group whose pregnancy was terminated by abortion and the group who gave birth in terms of PCT, NLR, MLR, and PLR values. PCT, NLR, and MLR values were high in the abortion group, and PLR values were low (p<0.05). Premature birth was developed in 11.3% (n=15) of AI patients. There was a significant difference between the preterm and term pregnancy in terms of PCT, NLR, MLR, and PLR levels (p<0.005). PCT, NLR, and MLR values were high and PLR levels were low in pregnant women who gave birth prematurely. Conclusion: We think that close follow-up of abortion imminent patients with high levels of these inflammatory factors is appropriate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Parotid gland tumors are uncommon in the head and neck surgery practice and difficult to surgically treat. Planning is very important, especially while planning parotid gland surgery, considering the difficulty of revision surgery. In this context, fine-needle aspiration cytology and radiological imaging stand out. However, preoperative diagnosis is sometimes difficult due to the nature of the salivary gland. At this point, additional methods in preoperative diagnosis are questioned. In our study, it was aimed to determine the surgical modality based on the predictive value in parotid benign and malignant masses with inexpensive, fast and easily obtainable platelet indices, NLR (Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio) and PLR (Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio). Materials and Methods: The data of 236 patients who were operated on with parotid masses between 2010 and 2020 in our clinic were retrospectively analyzed. The data of the patients and the control group were evaluated statistically. Results: A total of 356 participants were included in the study, including 236 patients who had undergone parotid gland surgery and a control group of 120 healthy individuals. When the data of the participants were reviewed, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of age. In terms of sex, the number of the male patients was significantly higher than the female participants in the group with only parotid benign neoplasia. Based on the collected data, the mean MPV (Mean Platelet Volume) values were mean 9.1548 ± 1.55152 in the parotid cancer patient group (n1), 9.3810 ± 1.57825 in the inpatient group with parotid benign mass (n2) and 10.49250± 1.05314 in the control group (n3). The mean NLR values were found as 3.6395 ± 3.36035 in the parotid cancer patients (n1), 2.0145 ± 1.04293 in the parotid benign masses (n2) and 1.9689 ± 1.54979 in the control group (n3). The mean PDW (Platelet Distribution Width) values were found as 14.1258 ± 2.82536 in the parotid cancer patient group (n1), 14.5220 ± 2.69823 in the parotid benign mass group (n2), and 12.5150 ± 2.49953 in the control group (n3). Conclusion: In our study, we observed that the MPV, PDW and NLR values were significantly changed in the parotid gland tumors. We concluded that NLR values may be used effectively, especially in the predictive diagnosis of malignant masses and in planning surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Inflammatory response plays an important role in the development and progression of various cancers, including breast cancer. The aim of present study is determining Complete Blood Count parameters as possible predictors of malignancy in breast lesions. Material and Methods: Patients with BI-RADS-4 breast disease were studied between 2010 and 2017 retrospectively. Patients with lesions detected radiologically were included in the study. According to the histopathological results, the study cohort was divided into two groups, either benign or malignant. Final blood counts of the patients before pre-biopsy were evaluated in preoperative peripheral blood measurements. When blood was taken, care was taken not to have other causes of leukocytosis in the patient. Complete Blood Count parameters were compared in these groups. Results: A total of 331 women with BI-RADS 4 lesions enrolled to the study. Mortality and morbidity were not observed after breast biopsy in patients. Platelet (p=0.04), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (p=0.006) and red cell distribution width to platelet ratio (p=0.032) values of the patients with BI RADS 4A were found significantly different in the malignant group compared to benign BI RADS 4A group. In total BIRADS 4 lesions, the ratio of PLT and RPR was significant in malignant group (p=0.047, p=0.002) in Complete Blood Count parameters compared benign and malignant group. Conclusion: Studies have shown that cancer affects peripheral blood cells positively or negatively. In our study, among peripheral blood cells, platelets were found to be the most affected in cancer patients. The PLT, PLR and RPR values could be valuable in predicting malignant BIRADS 4 breast lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) are widely used simple markers of subclinical inflammation. We explored whether these parameters were affected in patients with chronic otitis media (COM) with and without cholesteatoma. Material and Methods: We studied 295 COM patients operated upon in our hospital and 135 healthy subjects were devoid of inflammation (controls). The patients were divided into two groups depending on cholesteatoma status: COM with cholesteatoma (the COMch group) and COM without cholesteatoma (the COM group). The groups were compared in terms of their NLRs, PLRs, and MPVs. The NLR and PLR were calculated by dividing the numbers of neutrophils and platelets by that of lymphocytes. Results: Of the 295 patients, 149 and 146 had COMch and COM, respectively. No significant difference (P 0.05) was evident in any of NLR, PLR, or MPV between the study groups. Conclusion: None of LNR, PLR, or MPV differed significantly in COM patients with and without cholesteatoma. Although inflammation plays an important role in cholesteatoma pathogenesis, any effect thereof is local rather than systemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The relationship between inflammation and the development of atrial fibrillation and the relationship between platelet to lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume in relation to inflammation were investigated in patients with atrial fibrillation after isolated coronary artery bypass graft operation. Material And Methods: Clinical and laboratory data of 132 patients, who did not have preoperative atrial fibrillation and underwent isolated coronary artery bypass graft operation using cardiopulmonary pump, were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups as patients with developed atrial fibrillation and those without atrial fibrillation. Concomitant diseases, preoperative drug use, echocardiographic and angiographic findings, preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative laboratory parameters were obtained from medical records and compared statistically. Results: Of the 132 patients, 68 with atrial fibrillation (mean age: 68.3+/-10.7 years, 50 males and 18 females) and 64 patients without atrial fibrillation (mean age: 64.5+/-9.8 years, 55 males and 9 females) were identified, and difference in the mean age was statistically significant (p=0.016). Postoperative platelet to lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume values (280.3+/-112.3; 9.9+/-1.7) were also significantly higher in those with atrial fibrillation group than preoperative values (129.2+/-49.3; 9.6+/-1.6, p<0.0001, p<0.0009). Conclusıon: According to our study higher values of postoperative platelet to lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume are correlated with development of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft operation. Aim: To investigate the predictive value of platelet to lymphocyte and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios for hepatocellular carcinoma outcomes. Material and Methods: 37 hepatocellular carcinoma patients were retrospectively collected. All of the hepatocellular carcinoma patients were treated with conventional methods; transarterial chemoembolization, radiofrequency ablation or both. The patient and tumor characteristics, platelet to lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio were recorded. The association between platelet to lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and tumor free survival rates, recurence rates, need of repeated conventional therapy were analyzed. Results: The mean MELD (model for end stage liver disease) score of 37 hepatocellular carcinoma patients was 10.75±4.484 (mean age 59.59±17.23 years). High platelet to lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio were found to be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence (p<0.01). However platelet to lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio were irrevelant with tumor size and number (p>0.05). Platelet to lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios were significantly high in patients who had repated transarterial chemoembolisation, radiofrequency ablation or both (p<0.01). The disease free survival of these patients who need repeated procedures was 6.5 months and it was significantly lower than the other patients (p<0.05). Conclusion: Platelet to lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio were found to be predictive for aggressive cancer behavior, so they can be used as markers for hepatocellular carcinoma. Aim: Calcific aortic valve disease is an active cellular process including chronic inflammation, calcification, and lipid accumulation which issimilar to atherosclerosis. The platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) is a hematologicalparameter which increases with the inflammation and vascular oxidative stress. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate whether the PLR had a prognostic role inprocedural complications and mid-term mortality ofaortic stenosis (AS) patients underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Material and Methods: A total of 100 symptomatic severe AS patients undergone TAVI in atertiary heart center between June 2012 and June 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The PLR was calculated by dividing the absolute platelet count by the absolute lymphocyte count before the TAVI procedure. The follow-up duration of the study was six months. Results: The mean age of study population was 78 years (range: 65-85), and 35 patients were male. Of note, serum PLR level was significantly elevated in patients who developed vascular complication and stroke after the TAVI (p<0.05, for all). In addition, the patients with a high serum PLR had an elevated mortality during six months' follow-up (p<0.05). Conclusion: High pre-procedural PLR level may have a predictive value for vascular complications and stroke in AS patients who underwent TAVI.
