Simple Summary: In practical terms, pet owners' lack of awareness regarding weight reduction protocols, coupled with the high costs of commercial prescription diets, often makes it difficult for them to adhere to such programs in the long term. This study addressed the costs of weight loss per kilogram of metabolic weight in dogs and cats, considering various dietary regimens. The weight reduction protocol, supervised by veterinarians, involved eight dogs and ten cats. Simple Summary: Effective, sustainable regional surveillance for the early detection of notifiable swine pathogens has been difficult to achieve. Regional surveillance based on clinical signs (syndromic surveillance) is not diagnostically sensitive and specific. Surveillance based on farm-by-farm testing is burdensome and costly. Borrowing the strengths of each approach, we evaluated an active participatory surveillance design in which regional status was determined by targeted sampling of 10 poor-doing pigs in each participating farm followed by screening in credentialed laboratories. The analysis showed that at 0.1% prevalence (18 infected farms among 17,521 farms) and a farm-level detection probability of 30%, active participatory surveillance would detect ≥ 1 positive farms with 67%, 90%, and 97% probability when producer participation was 20%, 40%, and 60%, respectively. Depending on the specimen collected (serum or swab sample) and test format (nucleic acid or antibody detection), the cost per round of sampling ranged from EUR 0.016 to EUR 0.032 (USD 0.017 to USD 0.034 USD) per pig in the region. The techniques and technologies required for active participatory surveillance are widely available and in common use. Implementation would require coordination among producers, industry groups, and animal health authorities. We evaluated an active participatory design for the regional surveillance of notifiable swine pathogens based on testing 10 samples collected by farm personnel in each participating farm. To evaluate the performance of the design, public domain software was used to simulate the introduction and spread of a pathogen among 17,521 farms in a geographic region of 1,615,246 km2. Simple Summary: This study aims to determine the income level of contracted broiler breeders in terms of earnings and to calculate the profitability, cost, and return of contracted production. In broiler production, the contracted production model between the breeder and the integrated broiler business that supplies the product to the market is applied in Turkey as well as in the world. Broiler production is completed in 5–7 weeks in the normal process. This process may vary depending on slaughter weight, market conditions, carcass broiler weight demands of consumers, feed prices, broiler sales price, and operating conditions. However, in some periods, integrated broiler enterprises make the broiler slaughter earlier in order not to experience disruptions in product supply in the supply chain. In such cases, to determine whether broiler breeders suffer from income loss, breeding parameters were calculated as cost and net income gain in the study. The results show that the entrepreneurs generated a net income of $9.197 per m2 and $0.541 per broiler during the rearing period from broiler breeding. Despite the low earnings in contracted broiler breeding, it is continued because it allows the on-site evaluation of the workforce of family businesses engaged in breeding. Integrated broiler enterprises can procure products regularly throughout the year through contracted production. This study uses the data obtained from 63 broiler farms engaged in contract farming in Akhisar, Turkey. The average feed conversion ratio in the broiler farms is 1.75, the average live weight 2.25 kg, and the mean market age 38.9 days. The feed conversion rate and the income generated are highly correlated (r = −0.76). The production index is 313.4. According to this production index value, 47.6% of the enterprises are below the average production index. It is highest when the marketing age is greater than 38 days, less than and equal to 40. In other words, it is the optimum market age range where carcass yield is at maximum. The average mortality rate is 4.68%. In 52.4% of the enterprises, the mortality rate is above 5%. There is a low level of correlation between the mortality rate and income (r = −0.26). In broiler farming, mortality rate, and feed conversion ratio are factors that directly affect the success and income of the breeder. In broiler farming, the heating cost has the largest share of the total cost, followed by the litter cost. They are followed by labor, electricity, and pesticide costs. Variable costs account for three-quarters of the total operating costs. The farms have a mean gross value of production of $23.797 per m2 and $1.400 per broiler in a breeding period. The profit margin is 0.572 $/kg per broiler. The mean enterprise net income in the breeding period is $9.197 per m2 and $0.541 per broiler. Simple Summary: Lowering the slaughter age of sheep is an indispensable measure to improve the quality of meat reaching the market and to increase the per capita consumption of this type of protein. Sheep meat production systems on pasture are less costly alternatives and associating them with supplementation strategies to reduce costs may be the path to consolidate the productive chain of sheep meat. We assessed intermittent supplementation (every day or every other day) in sheep managed with Masai grass and found no effect of said grass on nutrient intake, performance, intake behavior, carcass characteristics, or meat quality. However, it was seen that the strategy reduces the cost of producing 1 kg of meat by 15%, which encourages us to recommend the application of that nutritional strategy. This study aimed to assess nutrient intake, performance, intake behavior, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of sheep managed on Masai grass pastures along with intermittent concentrate supplementation, in addition to the economic impacts of applying that strategy. A sample of 24 Santa Inês sheep (12 males and 12 females) was kept for 80 days on Panicum maximum cv. Massai pastures and was supplemented daily or every other day. The voluntary intake of dry matter and nutrients was estimated. Mean daily weight gain and total weight gain were calculated and intake behavior parameters were assessed. The males were slaughtered and the weight and yield of the carcasses and meat cuts were assessed. The meat was analyzed for cooking losses, shear force, and color. The gross margin of the system was estimated from the difference between total income and operational cost. No effect was seen of the interaction between supplementation frequency and sex for any parameter assessed (p > 0.05). Simple Summary: Optimum lamb growth and cost-effective artificial lamb rearing are important to maximise farm profit. In addition to milk feeding, supplementation of a solid feed with balanced nutrients and an adequate level of fibre will aid rumen development, allowing for a smooth transition from a liquid to a solely solid diet. This study aimed to determine the effect of pellet fibre level, milk replacer composition and early milk weaning at 42 days of age, on the growth and body composition of lambs reared artificially to 57 days of age. Results demonstrate that lamb growth rate to 57 days of age was not affected by early weaning or pellet fibre level. Early milk weaning increased pellet intake and empty rumen weight. Early weaning resulted in leaner carcasses due to reduced fat deposition and lower total feed costs compared to lambs offered milk to 57 days of age. Overall, feeding lambs either low or high fibre pellets and weaning early (42 days of age) was shown to be beneficial, as growth was similar to unweaned lambs, but leaner carcasses and reduced feed costs were observed. This study was designed to investigate the influence of pellet fibre level, milk replacer composition and age at weaning on growth and body composition of lambs reared artificially. Romney ram lambs were randomly allocated to one of three rearing treatments; HFP57: commercial milk replacer to 57 days of age, and high fibre concentrate pellets; HFP42: commercial milk replacer with early weaning at 42 days of age, and high fibre concentrate pellets; LFP42: high protein milk replacer from 2–16 days of age followed by commercial milk replacer with early weaning at 42 days of age, and low fibre concentrate pellets. Lambs were slaughtered at 57 days of age. Overall average daily liveweight gain of lambs did not differ (p > 0.05) between treatments. Dressing out percentage, carcass weight, empty small intestine and omental fat were higher (p < 0.05) in HFP57 than in both HFP42 and LFP42 lambs. HFP42 and LFP42 lambs had heavier (p < 0.05) empty rumen weights. Whole body protein content was higher (p < 0.05) in HFP42 lambs compared to both HFP57 and LFP42 lambs. Fat content and daily fat deposition were greater (p < 0.05) in HFP57 lambs than HFP42 and LFP42 lambs. Weaning lambs at 42 days of age with provision of either low or high fibre concentrate pellets, resulted in similar growth rates, reduced whole body fat deposition and was a more cost-effective rearing regimen. Simple Summary: Studies have shown that providing concentrate and bypass fat as feed supplements resulted in better performance of large ruminants. However, there is limited information about the effects of these supplements on the performance of buffaloes. This study evaluates the effects of concentrate and bypass fat supplementations on the growth performance, blood metabolites, and feeding cost of Murrah cross and Swamp buffaloes. Following diet supplementation, the feed intake, body weight, and body condition score were significantly improved without any side effects on the blood metabolites of both buffalo breeds. Although the mixture of concentrate and bypass fat supplement (26:4) used in this study was found to increase the cost of feed, overall, it resulted in a greater return. This study investigates the effects of supplementation of the basal diet with concentrate and rumen bypass fat on the dry matter intake (DMI), growth performance, blood metabolites and hormonal changes, and the feeding cost of feedlot water buffaloes. Thirty-six healthy, three- to four-month-old male Murrah crossbred (n = 18) and Swamp (n = 18) buffaloes with a similar average initial body weight of 98.64 ± 1.93 kg were each randomly allocated into three dietary experimental groups. Buffaloes were fed with Diet A, which consisted of 100% Brachiaria decumbens, Diet B, consisting of 70% Brachiaria decumbens and 30% concentrate, and Diet C, consisting of 70% Brachiaria decumbens, 26% concentrate, and 4% rumen bypass fat for a period of 730 days. Feed intake was measured daily, while blood samples were collected for every eight months. Furthermore, body scores were noted prior to and at the end of the experimental period. The results showed that the average daily gain for buffaloes fed with Diet C was the highest. The DMI, BCS, FI, and FCR for the three groups showed significant (p < 0.05) differences, in the following order: Diet C > Diet B > Diet A. At the end of the two-year feeding trial, buffaloes fed with Diet B had significantly (p < 0.05) higher cholesterol levels than Diet A and Diet C. In addition, buffaloes fed with Diet C had significantly (p < 0.05) higher levels of serum total protein, growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factor-I hormone compared to Diet A and Diet B. On the other hand, buffaloes fed with Diet B and Diet C showed significant (p < 0.05) decrease in glucose levels. Supplemented diet improved the buffalos' weight gain to achieve the market weight in a shorter period of time, thus, giving farmers a greater return. In conclusion, concentrate and bypass fat supplementations in the diet of water buffaloes improved the growth performance without adverse effect on the blood metabolites, which enabled better farmer profitability. Simple Summary: Mastitis is a costly disease and needs to be identified as soon as possible to reduce the negative effect on milk quality and quantity and to maximize the chance of cure when an antimicrobial therapy is applied. Bacteriological diagnosis is expensive and not easily available in some areas, therefore approaches to reduce the number of samples to be taken, focusing the interest on cows with higher chances to have an intramammary infections are desirable. The results of our study based on a large database of quarter milk samples analyses including bacteriological analysis, total (SCC) and differential (DSCC) cell count in the first 5–30 days after calving suggest a new and sustainable approach. Indeed, a marker (PLCC) calculated by multiplying SCC and DSCC showed to have the lowest cost when applied to identify udder quarters at risk to have an intramammary infection due to major pathogens. Moreover, this approach as well as the one based on SCC became a benefit when the prevalence of these infections exceeds 10%, and it be of high interest, when selective dry cow therapy is applied, to improve animal health at the herd level. Milk differential somatic cells count (DSCC), made possible under field conditions by the recent availability of a high-throughput milk analyzer may represent an improvement in mastitis diagnosis. While an increasing number of studies reports data on DSCC on individual cow samples, very few concerns DSCC from quarter milk samples. This paper reports for the first time the results of a retrospective study aiming to assess the performance of total (SCC), DSCC, and a novel calculated marker (PLCC) measured on quarter milk samples as a method to identify cows at risk for intramammary infection (IMI) in the first 30 days after calving. Overall, 14,586 valid quarter milk samples (3658 cows) taken in the first 30 days of lactation were considered. Quarters with major pathogens (MP) IMI, as expected, showed significantly higher means for SCC, DSCC, and PLCC. The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the diagnosis based on different cut-offs calculated by ROC analysis are relatively close among DSCC, PLCC, and SCC (up to cut-off of 200,000 cells/mL). However, decision-tree analysis which includes the costs of analysis, but also the costs of the actions taken after test results showed as PLCC has the lowest cost among the three markers, and PLCC and SCC are cost effective when MP prevalence is higher than 6–10%.
