Two homoleptic copper(II) complexes [Cu(L1)2] and [Cu(L2)2] with anionic redox‐active ligands were synthesised, one with urea azine (L1) and the other with thio‐urea azine (L2) ligands. One‐electron oxidation of the complexes initiates an unprecedented redox‐induced electron transfer process, leading to monocationic copper(I) complexes [Cu(L1)2]+ and [Cu(L2)2]+ with two oxidised ligands. While [Cu(L1)2]+ is best described as a CuI complex with two neutral radical ligands that couple antiferromagnetically, [Cu(L2)2]+ is a CuI complex with two clearly different ligand units in the solid state and with a magnetic susceptibility close to a diamagnetic compound. Further one‐electron oxidation of the complex with L1 ligands results in a dication [Cu(L1)2]2+, best described as a CuI complex with a twofold oxidised, monocationic ligand and a neutral radical ligand. The stability in at least three redox states, the accumulation of spin density at the ligands and the facile ligand‐metal electron transfer make these complexes highly attractive for a variety of applications; here the catalytic aerobic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes is tested., Oxidation‐induced reduction: The oxidation of mononuclear CuII complexes with novel unsymmetric redox‐active urea azine or thio‐urea azine ligands leads to metal reduction and formation of complexes with intriguing electronic structures. The stability in several redox states is the basis for their first application in catalytic aerobic alcohol oxidation.

A 12‐step total synthesis of the natural product dysiherbol A, a strongly anti‐inflammatory and anti‐tumor avarane meroterpene isolated from the marine sponge Dysidea sp., was elaborated. As key steps, the synthesis features an enantioselective Cu‐catalyzed 1,4‐addition/enolate‐trapping opening move, an Au‐catalyzed double cyclization to build up the tetracyclic core‐carbon skeleton, and a late installation of the C5‐bridgehead methyl group via proton‐induced cyclopropane opening associated with spontaneous cyclic ether formation. The obtained pentacyclic compound (corresponding to an anhydride of the originally suggested structure for dysiherbol A) showed identical spectroscopic data as the natural product, but an opposite molecular rotation. CD‐spectroscopic measurements finally confirmed that both the constitution and the absolute configuration of the originally proposed structure of (+)‐dysiherbol A need to be revised., In a key step of the first enantioselective total synthesis of the anti‐inflammatory marine meroterpene dysiherbol A, the tetra‐carbocyclic core skeleton is set‐up in a unique gold‐catalyzed double cyclization, and the ether bridge of the pentacyclic target structure is spontaneously formed under cyclopropane opening upon deprotection of a late intermediate.

Herein we report a versatile concept for the synthesis of fourfold functionalized, soluble pyrenes, peropyrenes, terropyrenes, and quarterropyrenes. They were obtained by a modular stepwise approach towards the rylene scaffold via Suzuki–Miyaura cross coupling, oxidative cyclodehydrogenation in the presence of caesium hydroxide under air, and finally zinc‐mediated reductive silylation. The silylated reaction products were characterized by X‐ray crystallography. The first example of a synthesized and crystallized quarterropyrene is presented and its oxidation reaction investigated. The functionalized ropyrenes were systematically characterized by means of UV/Vis–NIR and photoluminescence spectroscopy showing a bathochromic shift of 80 nm per naphthalene unit and a nearly linear increase of the extinction coefficients. Cyclic voltammograms and DFT calculations identify them as electron‐rich dyes and show a narrowing of the electrochemically determined HOMO–LUMO gap and lower oxidation potentials for the higher homologues., An approach for the modular synthesis of peropyrenes, terropyrenes, and quarterropyrenes via reductive aromatization and silylation key steps is presented. The functionalized members of the ropyrene family are characterized by X‐ray crystallography and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Optical spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry are discussed in relation to DFT‐calculated frontier molecular orbital energies.

Super‐resolution optical fluctuation imaging (SOFI) is a super‐resolution microscopy technique that overcomes the diffraction limit by analyzing intensity fluctuations of statistically independent emitters in a time series of images. The final images are background‐free and show confocality and enhanced spatial resolution (super‐resolution). Fluorophore photobleaching, however, is a key limitation for recording long time series of images that will allow for the calculation of higher order SOFI results with correspondingly increased resolution. Here, we demonstrate that photobleaching can be circumvented by using fluorophore labels that reversibly and transiently bind to a target, and which are being replenished from a buffer which serves as a reservoir. Using fluorophore‐labeled short DNA oligonucleotides, we labeled cellular structures with target‐specific antibodies that contain complementary DNA sequences and record the fluctuation events caused by transient emitter binding. We show that this concept bypasses extensive photobleaching and facilitates two‐color imaging of cellular structures with SOFI., Fluorophore labels that transiently bind to and unbind from a protein target allow photobleaching in super‐resolution optical fluctuation imaging (SOFI) to be circumvented. Using short fluorophore‐labeled DNA oligonucleotides, we demonstrate high‐contrast, low‐background, and multi‐color super‐resolution imaging with SOFI.

Acidic supported ionic liquid phase catalysts were investigated for the synthesis of oxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OMEs). The application of OME1 and trioxane for the gas-phase synthesis of higher OMEs and in particular the generation of OMEn with n higher than 3 was successfully demonstrated. Raising the pressure led to an increase in the conversion of OME1 and to higher selectivity for higher molecular weight OMEs. Furthermore, a correlation between the ionic liquid’s acidity and the catalytic activity was shown with higher acidity leading to higher conversion of trioxane and OME1. Moreover, successful long-term operation for more than 200 h time on stream has been demonstrated with good catalyst system stability.

Azolium enolates and acyl azolium cations have been proposed as intermediates in numerous N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyzed transformations. Acetyl azolium enolates were generated from the reaction of 2‐propenyl acetate with both saturated (SIPr) and aromatic (IPr) NHCs, isolated, and characterized (NMR, XRD). Protonation with triflic acid gave the corresponding acetyl azolium triflates which were isolated and characterized (NMR, XRD). Acyl azolium cations have been proposed as immediate precursors of the ester product, for example, in the redox esterification of α,β‐enals. Studies with d 3‐acetyl azolium triflate suggest that ester formation originates instead from an azolium enolate intermediate. Furthermore, the acetyl azolium enolate selectively reacted with alcohol nucleophiles in the presence of amines. While the acetyl azolium cation did not react with alcohols, an ester‐selective reaction was induced by addition of base, by intermediate formation of the acetyl azolium enolate., Acetyl azolium enolates resulted from the treatment of the N‐heterocyclic carbenes IPr and SIPr with 2‐propenyl acetate. Protonation converts them into acetyl azolium cations. The latter react with amines faster than with alcohols, while the azolium enolates reacted readily with alcohols, but sluggishly with amines. The use of a d3‐acetyl azolium triflate indicated that alcohol acetylation occurs at the azolium enolate stage.

Sulfur as a side product of natural gas and oil refining is an underused resource. Converting landfilled sulfur waste into materials merges the ecological imperative of resource efficiency with economic considerations. A strategy to convert sulfur into polymeric materials is the inverse vulcanization reaction of sulfur with alkenes. However, the materials formed are of limited applicability, because they need to be cured at high temperatures (>130 °C) for many hours. Herein, we report the reaction of elemental sulfur with styrylethyltrimethoxysilane. Marrying the inverse vulcanization and silane chemistry yielded high sulfur content polysilanes, which could be cured via room temperature polycondensation to obtain coated surfaces, particles, and crosslinked materials. The polycondensation was triggered by hydrolysis of poly(sulfur‐r‐styrylethyltrimethoxysilane) (poly(Sn‐r‐StyTMS) under mild conditions (HCl, pH 4). For the first time, an inverse vulcanization polymer could be conveniently coated and mildly cured via post‐polycondensation. Silica microparticles coated with the high sulfur content polymer could improve their Hg2+ ion remediation capability., Marrying inverse vulcanization and silane chemistry yields solution‐processable high sulfur content polysulfide‐alkoxysilanes, which could be cured via polycondensation. With this strategy, coated surfaces and particles as well as crosslinked materials can be obtained. This method extends the applicability and control of materials prepared via inverse vulcanization.

Although pure hydrogen cyanide can spontaneously polymerize or even explode, when initiated by small amounts of bases (e.g. CN- ), the reaction of liquid HCN with [WCC]CN (WCC=weakly coordinating cation=Ph4 P, Ph3 PNPPh3 =PNP) was investigated. Depending on the cation, it was possible to extract salts containing the formal dihydrogen tricyanide [CN(HCN)2 ]- and trihydrogen tetracyanide ions [CN(HCN)3 ]- from liquid HCN when a fast crystallization was carried out at low temperatures. X-ray structure elucidation revealed hydrogen-bridged linear [CN(HCN)2 ]- and Y-shaped [CN(HCN)3 ]- molecular ions in the crystal. Both anions can be considered members of highly labile cyanide-HCN solvates of the type [CN(HCN)n ]- (n=1, 2, 3 …) as well as formal polypseudohalide ions.

Phosphotyrosine residues are essential functional switches in health and disease. Thus, phosphotyrosine biomimetics are crucial for the development of chemical tools and drug molecules. We report here the discovery and investigation of pentafluorophosphato amino acids as novel phosphotyrosine biomimetics. A mild acidic pentafluorination protocol was developed and two PF5-amino acids were prepared and employed in peptide synthesis. Their structures, reactivities, and fluorine-specific interactions were studied by NMR and IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and in bioactivity assays. The mono-anionic PF5 motif displayed an amphiphilic character binding to hydrophobic surfaces, to water molecules, and to protein-binding sites, exploiting charge and H−F-bonding interactions. The novel motifs bind 25- to 30-fold stronger to the phosphotyrosine binding site of the protein tyrosine phosphatase PTP1B than the best current biomimetics, as rationalized by computational methods, including molecular dynamics simulations.

Constrained peptides are promising next-generation therapeutics. We report here a fundamentally new strategy for the facile generation of bicyclic peptides using linear precursor peptides with three cysteine residues and a non-toxic trivalent bismuth(III) salt. Peptide-bismuth bicycles form instantaneously at physiological pH, are stable in aqueous solution for many weeks, and much more resistant to proteolysis than their linear precursors. The strategy allows the in situ generation of bicyclic ligands for biochemical screening assays. We demonstrate this for two screening campaigns targeting the proteases from Zika and West Nile viruses, revealing a new lead compound that displayed inhibition constants of 23 and 150 nM, respectively. Bicyclic peptides are up to 130 times more active and 19 times more proteolytically stable than their linear analogs without bismuth.

Fluorescent nanomaterials such as single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have many advantages in terms of their photophysics, but it is difficult to target them to specific locations in living systems. In contrast, the green fluorescent protein (GFP) has been genetically fused to proteins in many cells and organisms. Therefore, GFP can be seen not only as a fluorophore but as a universal target/handle. Here, we report the conjugation of GFP-binding nanobodies to DNA-wrapped SWCNTs. This approach combines the targeting capabilities of GFP-binding nanobodies and the nonbleaching near-infrared fluorescence (850-1700 nm) of SWCNTs. These conjugates allow us to track single Kinesin-5-GFP motor proteins in developing embryos of Drosophila melanogaster. Additionally, they are sensitive to the neurotransmitter dopamine and can be used for targeted sensing of dopamine in the nm regime.

The first generation and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of a crystalline Breslow intermediate (BI) derived from a thiazolin-2-ylidene, that is, the aromatic heterocycle present in vitamin B1 , is reported. Key to success was the combined use of pentafluorobenzaldehyde and a thiazolin-2-ylidene carrying an enol-stabilizing dispersion energy donor as N-substituent. A so-called primary intermediate (PI) could be isolated in protonated form (pPI) as well and analyzed by XRD. Furthermore, the first stable BI derived from an aromatic thiazolin-2-ylidene and an aliphatic aldehyde (trifluoroacetaldehyde) was prepared and characterized by NMR spectroscopy in solution. When switching to a saturated thiazolidin-2-ylidene, reaction with pentafluorobenzaldehyde afforded a new BI in solution (NMR spectroscopy). Attempts to crystallize the latter BI resulted in the isolation of a novel thiazolidin-2-ylidene dimer that had undergone rearrangement to a hexahydro[1,4]-thiazino[3,2-b]-1,4-thiazine.

Reaction of a ditriflatodiborane compound with the Lewis acids AlCl3 or GaCl3 leads to abstraction of the two triflate substituents and dimerization of the resulting dicationic diborane to give a σ-aromatic tetracationic tetraborane with a planar, rhomboid B4 core. The compound exhibits four skeletal σ-electrons involved in two (3c,2e) bonds and represents the first stable fourfold base-stabilized [B4 H4 ]4+ analogue. The product is isolated from the reaction mixture in the form of bright orange crystals that display fluorescence. Further analysis shows that the new tetraborane(4) is stabilized in the solid state by the lattice energy. It exhibits an extremely high electron affinity and is only stable in solution after one-electron reduction to the radical cation.

Starting from fluoridosilicate precursors in neat cyanotrimethylsilane, Me3 Si-CN, a series of different ammonium salts [R3 NMe]+ (R=Et, n Pr, n Bu) with the novel [SiF(CN)5 ]2- and [Si(CN)6 ]2- dianions was synthesized in facile, temperature controlled F- /CN- exchange reactions. Utilizing decomposable, non-innocent cations, such as [R3 NH]+ , it was possible to generate metal salts of the type M2 [Si(CN)6 ] (M+ =Li+ , K+ ) via neutralization reactions with the corresponding metal hydroxides. The ionic liquid [BMIm]2 [Si(CN)6 ] (m.p.=72 °C, BMIm=1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) was obtained by a salt metathesis reaction. All the synthesized salts could be isolated in good yields and were fully characterized.
