Ionic compounds containing sodium cations are notable for their stability and resistance to redox reactivity unless highly reducing electrical potentials are applied. Here we report that treatment of a low oxidation state {Mg2Na2} species with non‐reducible organic bases induces the spontaneous and completely selective extrusion of sodium metal and oxidation of the MgI centers to the more conventional MgII state. Although these processes are also characterized by a structural reorganisation of the initially chelated diamide spectator ligand, computational quantum chemical studies indicate that intramolecular electron transfer is abetted by the frontier molecular orbitals (HOMO/LUMO) of the {Mg2Na2} ensemble, which arise exclusively from the 3s valence atomic orbitals of the constituent sodium and magnesium atoms. Copper‐alumanyl complexes, [LCu‐Al(SiNDipp)], where L=carbene=NHCiPr (N,N′‐diisopropyl‐4,5‐dimethyl‐2‐ylidene) and Me2CAAC (1‐(2,6‐diisopropylphenyl)‐3,3,5,5‐tetramethyl‐pyrrolidin‐2‐ylidene) and featuring unsupported Al−Cu bonds, have been prepared. By using ethylene glycol and monocarboxylic acid as surface ligands, a series of cyclic Ti-oxo clusters (CTOC) with permanent microporosity are successfully synthesized. With a cyclic {Ti32O16} backbone made of eight connected Ti4 tetrahedral cages that are arranged in a zigzag fashion, the clusters have a 'donut' shape with an inner diameter of 8.3 Å, outer diameter of 26.9 Å and height of 10.4 Å. While both inner and outer walls of the 'donut' clusters are modified by double-deprotonated ethylene glycolates, their upper and lower surfaces are bound by carboxylates and mono-deprotonated ethylene glycolates. The clusters are readily packed into one-dimensional tubes which are further arranged in two different modes into crystalline microporous solids with surface areas over 660 m2 g−1, depending on the surface carboxylates. The solid with olefin-bearing carboxylates exhibits a superior CO2 adsorption capacity of 40 cm3 g−1 at 273 K under 1 atm. Moreover, the mono-deprotonated ethylene glycolates on the clusters are demonstrated to be highly exchangeable by other alcohols, providing a nice platform for creating microporous solids or films with a wide variety of surface functionalities. Molecular rectangles were obtained from two bis(NHC) ligands, each featuring two terminal coumarin groups and two Ag+, Au+, or Cu+ ions. Upon UV irradiation ( λ=365 nm), the dinuclear complexes undergo photochemical modification through a [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of two adjacent coumarin moieties to give a macrocyclic tetra(NHC) ligand. The photodimerization of the coumarin pendants proceeds stereoselectively to give the syn-head-head isomers in all cases. Subsequent irradiation at λ=254 nm initiates a photocleavage reaction with reconstitution of the initial dinuclear complexes with coumarin pendants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crystalline Si nanoparticles are prepared by reduction of SiCl4 with metallic magnesium in the molten salt of AlCl3 at 200 °C in an autoclave. AlCl3 not only acts as molten salt, but also participates in the reaction. The related experiments confirm that metallic Mg reduces AlCl3 to create nascent Al which could immediately reduce SiCl4 to Si, and the by-product MgCl2 would combine with AlCl3 forming complex of MgAl2Cl8. As anode for rechargeable lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared Si delivers the reversible capacity of 3083 mAh g−1 at 1.2 A g−1 after 50 cycles, and 1180 mAh g−1 at 3 A g−1 over 500 cycles. Maintaining high conversion under the premise of high oxygenates selectivity in syngas conversion is important but a formidable challenge in Rh catalysis. Monometallic Rh catalysts provide poor oxygenate conversion efficiency, and efforts have been focused on constructing adjacent polymetallic sites; however, the one‐pass yields of C2+ oxygenates over the reported Rh‐based catalysts were mostly <20 %. In this study, we constructed a monometallic Rh catalyst encapsulated in UiO‐67 (Rh/UiO‐67) with enhanced proximity to dual‐site Rh1,2‐Rhn ensembles. Unexpectedly, this catalyst exhibited high efficacy for oxygenate synthesis from syngas, giving a high oxygenate selectivity of 72.0 % with a remarkable CO conversion of 50.4 %, and the one‐pass yield of C2+ oxygenates exceeded 25 %. The state‐of‐the‐art characterizations further revealed the spontaneous formation of an ensemble of Rh single atoms/dimers (Rh1,2) in the proximity of ultrasmall Rh clusters (Rhn) confined within the nanocavity of UiO‐67, providing adjacent Rh+‐Rh0 dual sites dynamically during the reaction that promote the relay of the undissociated CHO species to the CHx species. Thus, our results open a new route for designing highly efficient Rh catalysts for the conversion of syngas to oxygenates by precisely tuning the ensemble and proximity of the dual active sites in a confined space. Chirality‐driven self‐sorting plays an essential role in controlling the biofunction of biosystems, such as the chiral double‐helix structure of DNA from self‐recognition by hydrogen bonding. However, achieving precise control over the chiral self‐sorted structures and their functional properties for the bioinspired supramolecular systems still remains a challenge, not to mention realizing dynamically reversible regulation. Herein, we report an unprecedented saucer[4]arene‐based charge transfer (CT) cocrystal system with dynamically reversible chiral self‐sorting synergistically induced by chiral triangular macrocycle and organic vapors. It displays efficient chain length‐selective vapochromism toward alkyl ketones due to precise modulation of optical properties by vapor‐induced diverse structural transformations. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the unique vapochromic behavior is mainly attributed to the formation of homo‐ or heterochiral self‐sorted assemblies with different alkyl ketone guests, which differ dramatically in solid‐state superstructures and CT interactions, thus influencing their optical properties. This work highlights the essential role of chiral self‐sorting in controlling the functional properties of synthetic supramolecular systems, and the rarely seen controllable chiral self‐sorting at the solid‐vapor interface deepens the understanding of efficient vapochromic sensors. Study of enantioselective recognition in water by synthetic chiral macrocyclic receptors is undoubtedly of theoretical and practical significance, but it is a big challenge to achieve the enantioselective recognition with both high enantioselectivity and high affinity in water probably due to the deficiency of such water‐soluble macrocyclic receptors with stable chiral cavities. Herein, we report a new class of chiral macrocyclic arenes named octopus[3]arenes. The enantiomeric macrocycles are composed of three homochiral ethenoanthracene subunits, and they can be synthesized by two pathways and then easily converted into water‐soluble octopus[3]arenes P‐1 and M‐1. Notably, P‐1 and M‐1 with the rigid hexagonal structures and stable chiral hydrophobic cavities exhibit highly enantioselective recognition towards three pairs of chiral ammonium salts in water with the association constant up to 106 M−1 and the S/R selectivity up to 12.89. Macrocycles denoted as saucer[n]arenes (n=4,5) were easily synthesized by the one‐pot condensation of 2,7‐dimethoxynaphthalene (2,7‐DMN) and paraformaldehyde in the presence of TFA or catalytic BF3⋅OEt2. With 1,1‐dimethylpiperidin‐1‐ium as the template, saucer[4]arene was selectively obtained. Crystal structures show that saucer[n]arenes are all composed of 2,7‐DMN moiety bridged by the methylene groups at 1,6‐positions: all of the 7‐methoxy groups lie on one face, and all of the 2‐methoxy groups lie on the other. Saucer[n]arenes exhibit strong fluorescence properties with the quantum yields of 19.6 % and 23.4 %. They form 1:1 complexes with ammonium salts in both solution and solid state (association constant up to 105 M−1 in CDCl3). Chiral quaternary ammonium salts can induce the chirality of the dynamically racemic inherently chiral saucer[n]arenes in solution, and thus show mirror‐imaged circular dichroism signals and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties. A series of [2]catenanes has been prepared from di‐NHC building blocks by utilizing solvophobic effects and/or π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The dinickel naphthobiscarbene complex syn‐[1] and the kinked biphenyl‐bridged bipyridyl ligand L2 yield the [2]catenane [2‐IL](OTf)4 by self‐assembly. Solvophobic effects are pivotal for the formation of the interlocked species. Substitution of the biphenyl‐linker in L2 for a pyromellitic diimide group gave ligand L3, which yielded in combination with syn‐[1] the [2]catenane [3‐IL](OTf)4. This assembly exhibits enhanced stability in diluted solution, aided by additional π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. The π⋅⋅⋅π stacking was augmented by the introduction of a pyrene bridge between two NHC donors in ligand L4. Di‐NHC precursor H2‐L4(PF6)2 reacts with Ag2O to give the [Ag2L42]2 [2]catenane [4‐IL](PF6)4, which shows strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions between the pyrene groups. This assembly was readily converted into the [Au2L42]2 gold species [5‐IL](PF6)4, which exhibits exceptional stability based on the strong π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions and the enhanced stability of the Au‐CNHC bonds. Although the chemistry of macrocyclic arenes has seen rapid development in recent years, the synthesis of new macrocyclic arenes from aromatic rings with no directing groups remains a challenge. In this work, a new macrocyclic arene, naphth[4]arene (NA[4]A), composed of four naphthalene rings bridged by methylene groups, was synthesized using macrocycle‐to‐macrocycle conversion. NA[4]A shows 1,3‐alternate and 1,2‐alternate conformations in the solid state, which can be selectively obtained. By supramolecular co‐assembly of NA[4]A and 1,2,4,5‐tetracyanobenzene (TCNB) in different concentrations and temperatures, two conformation‐dependent crystalline luminescent co‐assemblies 1,2‐NTC and 1,3‐NTC can be selectively prepared. Interestingly, the two charge‐transfer crystalline assemblies containing NA[4]A with different conformations show bright yellow and green fluorescence, and also display high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 45 % and 43 %. The hardness of oxo ions (O2−) means that coinage‐metal (Cu, Ag, Au) clusters supported by oxo ions (O2−) are rare. Herein, a novel μ4‐oxo supported all‐alkynyl‐protected silver(I)–copper(I) nanocluster [Ag74−xCuxO12(PhC≡C)50] (NC‐1, avg. x=37.9) is characterized. NC‐1 is the highest nuclearity silver–copper heterometallic cluster and contains an unprecedented twelve interstitial μ4‐oxo ions. The oxo ions originate from the reduction of nitrate ions by NaBH4. The oxo ions induce the hierarchical aggregation of CuI and AgI ions in the cluster, forming the unique regioselective distribution of two different metal ions. The anisotropic ligand coverage on the surface is caused by the jigsaw‐puzzle‐like cluster packing incorporating rare intermolecular C−H⋅⋅⋅metal agostic interactions and solvent molecules. This work not only reveals a new category of high‐nuclearity coinage‐metal clusters but shows the special clustering effect of oxo ions in the assembly of coinage‐metal clusters. Chiral Au nanoclusters have promising application prospects in chiral sensing, asymmetric catalysis, and chiroptics. However, enantiopure superatomic homogold clusters with crystallographic structures emitting bright circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) remain challenging. In this study, we designed chiral N‐heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), and for the first time enantioselectively synthesized a pair of monovalent cationic superatomic Au13 clusters. This new enantiomeric pair of clusters has a quasi‐C2 symmetric core and exhibited CPL with an unprecedent solution‐state quantum yield (QY) of 61 % among those of the atomically precise Au nanoclusters. DFT calculations provided insights into the circular dichroism behavior, and revealed the origin of CPL from superatomic Au clusters. This work opens a new avenue for developing novel homochiral nanoclusters using chiral NHC ligands and provides fundamental understanding of the origin of the chiroptics of metal clusters. The palladium‐catalyzed asymmetric carboamination reaction is one of the most significant transformations in organic chemistry. Herein, we report the first palladium‐catalyzed asymmetric alleneamination of β,γ‐unsaturated hydrazones with propargylic acetates. This protocol enables the efficient installation of various multisubstituted allene groups onto dihydropyrazoles in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities. The chiral sulfinamide phosphine ligand Xu‐5 exhibits highly efficient stereoselective control in this protocol. The salient features of this reaction include the readily available starting materials, a broad substrate scope, an easy scale‐up, mild reaction conditions and versatile transformations. Tangled cubes feature the topology of typical Platonic cubes, with their "faces" traversed by edges in different ways. This study generates an "A‐type" tangled metallocube from the reaction of binuclear gold‐NHC complex and H2S. The tangled cube topology was validated by multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, high‐resolution electrospray‐ionization (HR‐ESI) mass spectrometry, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. We report the synthesis and structure of tertiary chiral nanostructures with 100 % optical purity. A novel synthetic strategy, using chiral reducing agent, R and S‐BINAPCuBH4 (BINAP is 2,2′‐Bis(diphenylphosphino)‐1,1′‐binaphthyl), is developed to access to atomically precise, intrinsically chiral [Au7Ag6Cu2(R‐ or S‐BINAP)3(SCH2Ph)6]SbF6 nanoclusters in one‐pot synthesis. The clusters represent the first tri‐metallic superatoms with inherent chirality and fair stability. Both metal distribution (primary) and ligand arrangement (secondary) of the enantiomers exhibited perfect mirror images, and unprecedentedly, the self‐assembly driven by the C−H⋅⋅⋅F interaction between the phenyl groups of the superatom moieties and SbF6− anions induced the formation of bio‐mimic left‐ and right‐handed helices, achieving the tertiary chiral nanostructures. An approach to the highly efficient synthesis of C(sp3)‐bridged [6]cycloparaphenylenes (C[6]CPPs) from fluoren[3]arenes (F[3]As) was developed. Consequently, F[3]As as a new kind of macrocyclic arenes were synthesized. Followed by the demethylation, triflation and intramolecular aryl–aryl coupling reactions, C[6]CPPs were then conveniently obtained. Interestingly, C[6]CPPs could be selectively methylated to produce their fully outer‐methyl‐substituted derivatives. The crystal structures showed the hydroxyl‐substituted F[3]As had bowl‐shaped conformations, and the C[6]CPPs exhibited rigid belt‐shaped structures with deep cavities. Moreover, C[6]CPPs exhibited high HOMO energies and narrow energy gaps. An unclosed belt was further obtained, and it not only showed a similar narrow energy gap to those of the aromatic belts, but also displayed strong fluorescence property, which can play a vital role in the design and synthesis of new aromatic belts. Controlling the size and surface functionalization of nanoparticles (NPs) can lead to improved properties and applicability. Herein, we demonstrate the efficiency of the metal‐carbene template approach (MCTA) to synthesize highly robust and soluble three‐dimensional polyimidazolium cages (PICs) of different sizes, each bearing numerous imidazolium groups, and use these as templates to synthesize and stabilize catalytically active, cavity‐hosted, dispersed poly‐N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC)‐anchored gold NPs. Owing to the stabilization of the NHC ligands and the effective confinement of the cage cavities, the as‐prepared poly‐NHC‐shell‐encapsulated AuNPs displayed promising stability towards heat, pH, and chemical regents. The efficient backbone‐directed self‐assembly of cyclic metalla[3]catenanes by the combination of tetrachloroperylenediimide (TCPDI)‐based dinuclear rhodium(III) clips and 4,4′‐diazopyridine or 4,4′‐dipyridylethylene ligands is realized in a single‐step strategy. The topology and coordination geometry of the cyclic metalla[3]catenanes are characterized by NMR spectroscopy, ESI‐TOF‐MS spectrometry, UV/Vis‐NIR spectroscopy, and X‐ray diffraction studies. The most remarkable feature of the formed cyclic metalla[3]catenane is that it contains π‐aggregates (ca. 2.6 nm) incorporating six TCPDIs. Further studies revealed that cyclic metalla[3]catenanes can be converted reversibly to their corresponding sodium adducts and precursor building blocks, respectively. A series of supramolecular assemblies of types [Ag8(L)4](PF6)8 and [Ag4(L)2](PF6)4, obtained from the tetraphenylethylene (TPE) bridged tetrakis(1,2,4‐triazolium) salts H4‐L(PF6)4 and AgI ions, is described. The assembly type obtained dependends on the N‐wingtip substituents of H4‐L(PF6)4. Changes in the lengths of the N4‐wingtip substituents enables controlled formation of assemblies with either [Ag4(L)2](PF6)4 or [Ag8(L)4](PF6)8 stoichiometry. The molecular structures of selected [Ag8(L)4](PF6)8 and [Ag4(L)2](PF6)4 assemblies were determined by X‐ray diffraction analyses. While H4‐L(PF6)4 does not exhibit fluorescence in solution, their tetra‐NHC (NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene) assemblies do upon NHC–metal coordination. Upon irradiation, all assemblies undergo a light‐induced, supramolecule‐to‐supramolecule structural transformation by an oxidative photocyclization involving phenyl groups of the TPE core, resulting in a significant change of the luminescence properties. Surface organic ligands play a critical role in stabilizing atomically precise metal nanoclusters in solutions. However, it is still challenging to prepare highly robust ligated metal nanoclusters that are surface‐active for liquid‐phase catalysis without any pre‐treatment. Now, an N‐heterocyclic carbene‐stabilized Au25 nanocluster with high thermal and air stabilities is presented as a homogenous catalyst for cycloisomerization of alkynyl amines to indoles. The nanocluster, characterized as [Au25(iPr2‐bimy)10Br7]2+ (iPr2‐bimy=1,3‐diisopropylbenzimidazolin‐2‐ylidene) (1), was synthesized by direct reduction of AuSMe2Cl and iPr2‐bimyAuBr with NaBH4 in one pot. X‐ray crystallization analysis revealed that the cluster comprises two centered Au13 icosahedra sharing a vertex. Cluster 1 is highly stable and can survive in solution at 80 °C for 12 h, which is superior to Au25 nanoclusters passivated with phosphines or thiols. DFT computations reveal the origins of both electronic and thermal stability of 1 and point to the probable catalytic sites. This work provides new insights into the bonding capability of N‐heterocyclic carbene to Au in a cluster, and offers an opportunity to probe the catalytic mechanism at the atomic level. Metallosupramolecular poly‐NHC‐metal assemblies were prepared from trigonal hexakis (H6‐1 a(PF6)6 and H6‐1 b(PF6)6) or nonakis (H9‐3(BF4)9) imidazolium salts and Ag2O. Complexes [Ag6(1 a)2](PF6)6 and [Ag6(1 b)2](PF6)6 are built from six Ag+ ions sandwiched between two trigonal hexacarbene ligands with an inner and an outer NHC donor in each of the three ligand arms. The metal atoms are arranged in two triangles. The hexakis‐NHC ligands bear cinnamic ester groups at the outlying NHC donors, used in postsynthetic [2+2] cycloaddition reactions linking two hexakis‐NHC ligands by three cyclobutane units to give complexes [Ag6(2 a)](PF6)6 and [Ag6(2 b)](PF6)6 bearing a dodecacarbene ligand. From the related nonakisimidazolium salt H9‐3(BF4)9, complex [Ag9(4)](BF4)9 bearing an octadecacarbene ligand was obtained. Removal of the template metals yielded very large, stable, polyimidazolium cations with 12 or 18 internal imidazolium groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new class of supramolecular metallacycles capable of undergoing photochemical reactions and in situ release of cyclobutanes in solution is described. The molecular metallacycles were generated through coordination‐driven self‐assembly of dinuclear metal‐carbene complexes as organometallic clips with olefin‐functionalized bridging ligands. Photolysis of these molecular metallacycles in situ led to structural interconversion and release of the formed cyclobutane products with quantitative conversion. Further modifications of the obtained cyclobutanes provided a series of new species containing the cyclobutane skeleton. Catch and release: Photolysis of the pictured molecular metallacycles in situ leads to quantitative cycloaddition and release of the stereoselectively formed cyclobutane products. Homoleptic and heteroleptic cylinder‐shaped poly‐NHC metallosupramolecular assemblies [Ag3(L)2](BF4)3 have been prepared by control of the shape, size, and electronic properties of disk‐shaped trisimidazolium salts of type H3‐L(BF4)3. Both imidazolium salts with an electron‐deficient triazine backbone H3‐A(BF4)3 or an electron‐rich benzene backbone H3‐D(BF4)3 have been employed. Reaction of H3‐A(BF4)3 or H3‐D(BF4)3 with Ag2O yield trinuclear homoligand complexes [Ag3(L)2](BF4)3 (L=A, D). However, equimolar mixtures of H3‐A(BF4)3 and H3‐D(BF4)3 react with Ag2O under social self‐sorting to give the heteroligand assembly [Ag3(A)(D)](BF4)3. The same heteroligand assembly was obtained by transmetallation from mixtures of complexes [Ag3(A)2](BF4)3 and [Ag3(D)2](BF4)3. The transmetallation from [Ag3(A)(D)](BF4)3 to [Au3(A)(D)](BF4)3 is also demonstrated. The study expands to concepts of narcissistic and social self‐sorting from classical Werner‐type ligands to organometallic NHC chemistry thereby opening new routes for the construction of poly‐NHC metal assemblies with increasing complexity. Unprecedented social self‐sorting occurs during the reaction of Ag2O with two trisimidazolium salts featuring either an electron‐poor H3‐A1(BF4)3 or an electron‐rich H3‐D1(BF4)3 backbone to give the heteroligand assembly [Ag3(A1)(D1)](BF4)3 most likely driven by π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions between the electron‐rich and electron‐poor ligand backbone groups. A procedure for the synthesis of three‐dimensional hexakisimidazolium cage compounds has been developed. The reaction of the trigonal trisimidazolium salts H3L(PF6)3, decorated with three N‐olefinic pendants, and silver oxide yielded trinuclear trisilver(I) hexacarbene molecular cylinders of the type [Ag3L2]3+ with the olefinic pendants from the two different tricarbene ligands arranged in three pairs. Subsequent UV irradiation gave three cyclobutane links between the two tris‐NHC ligands in three [2+2] cycloaddition reactions, thereby generating a three‐dimensional hexakis‐NHC ligand. The largest Ln-Fe metal cluster [Gd12Fe14(μ3-OH)12(μ4-OH)6(μ4-O)12(TEOA)6(CH3COO)16(H2O)8]⋅(CH3COO)2(CH3CN)2⋅(H2O)20 ( 1) and the core-shell monodisperse metal cluster of 1 a@SiO2 ( 1 a=[Gd12Fe14(μ3-OH)12(μ4-OH)6(μ4-O)12(TEOA)6(CH3COO)16 (H2O)8]2+) were prepared. A new class of chiral macrocyclic arene composed of three chiral 2,6-dihydroxyltriptycene subunits bridged by methylene groups was designed and synthesized. Structural studies showed that the macrocyclic molecule adopts a hex-nut-like structure with a helical chiral cavity and highly fixed conformation. Efficient resolution was achieved through the introduction of chiral auxiliaries to give a couple of enantiopure macrocycles, which exhibited high enantioselectivity towards three pairs of chiral compounds containing a trimethylamino group. Diversity‐oriented biosynthesis of a library of antimycin‐like compounds (380 altogether) was accomplished by using multiplex combinatorial biosynthesis.
